George Stinney Jr: Youngest Person to be Executed in the USA

To be 14 years old means to be young and carefree–or in the case of George Stinney Jr.‚ it meant to be the youngest person in the United States to ever be executed. Making his haunting case even more tragic is the fact that‚ in the end‚ George’s conviction was vacated 70 years later.  A wrongful conviction is unfortunate‚ even for the most petty of crimes. The public faith in the justice system is only assured when it can be believed that the right call is made the vast majority of the time. A wrongful conviction as horrifying as the one passed down onto young George Stinney Jr. threatens to not only shake this faith in the justice system but ends in the unfair death of a child. This article delves into the short‚ sorrowful life of George Stineny Jr.‚ his wrongful conviction‚ and the exoneration that came much too late to save him.  George Stinney’s mugshot‚ 1944 Who Was the Youngest Person to Get The Death Penalty? George Stinney Jr. was the youngest person in the United States to ever receive the death penalty. In other parts of the world‚ there are records of younger children who faced execution‚ as well as vague stories from the United States that have no defined dates. Despite this‚ George Stinney Jr. is the youngest American with a confirmed recorded date of birth to ever be executed for a crime.  The Early Life of George Stinney Jr  George Stinney Jr. was born on October 21‚ 1929‚ in Alcolu‚ South Carolina on a hot‚ muggy fall day. His parents were Aime and George Stinney Sr.‚ from whom George Jr would get his name.  Alcolu was a small mill town populated by the working class. Like most other South Carolina cities and towns of the time‚ it was part of an intensely racially charged‚ segregated society. The town’s white and black neighborhoods were separated by a railroad track that cut through the center of town.   George and his siblings‚ Charles‚ Katherine‚ and Aime‚ were forced to grow up in this segregated world. Because of that‚ he faced deep-seated prejudices throughout his life‚ ultimately leading to his execution.  What Crime Was George Stinney Jr. Accused Of? Early in the morning of March 23‚ 1944‚ the bodies of two young white girls that had gone missing the night before were found. Betty June Binnicker‚ 11‚ and Emma Thames‚ 7‚ were found in a ditch on the black neighborhood side of the railroad tracks.  The murders of the two girls were violent. Both had been beaten with a weapon‚ which was hypothesized to be something blunt and metallic like a railroad spike. The trauma that they suffered was severe–both of their skulls were broken and penetrated by the weapon. Sadly‚ George Stinney Sr. had helped search for the girls‚ taking part in solving the crime that his son would eventually be executed for.  The previous day‚ Betty and Emma were seen riding their bicycles looking for flowers to pick. On their search‚ they passed the Stinney residence and spoke to George Jr. and his younger sister Aime‚ asking where they might find a certain type of passionflower called Maypops.  This interaction is what would lead police to George Stinney Jr. the next day‚ but his sister Aime would report that George had been with her at the time the girls were killed.  Geroge Stinney Jr’s Arrest  The following day on March 24‚ the Sheriff of Alcolu announced that Geroge Stinney Jr. had been arrested and that the boy had confessed and produced a murder weapon.  Both George and his brother John had been arrested for the crime of murdering Betty and Emma‚ but only George would be kept by police. John was released.  Racial tension‚ the connection of the girls speaking to George before their disappearances‚ and the fact that the girls were found in the African American neighborhood within Alcolu led to this swift arrest. The officer who arrested George Stinney Jr. was H.S. Newman‚ an Alcolu Deputy. He provided a written record claiming that George had confessed and led him to the location of the murder weapon–a piece of iron that Newman claimed was in the same ditch that Betty and Emma had been found in.  George’s family were forced to leave their home and were unable to see George at any time before his trial. This meant he was alone‚ with no support‚ for 81 days.  Trial and Execution of George Stinney Jr.  The trial of George Stinney Jr. occurred on April 24‚ 1944. George was given counsel‚ but it was severely lacking‚ coming in the form of a court-appointed counsel who was actually a tax commissioner.  No African Americans were allowed inside to witness the trial. But more than 1‚000 white Americans managed to fit into the courtroom. Stinney’s jury was all white. After a trial based almost solely on the shaky confessions apparently given by Stinney‚ the jury deliberated for only ten minutes before reaching a verdict.  George Stinney Jr. was found guilty of murder. Despite appeals by the NAACP and other South Carolina citizens‚ he was sentenced to death.  Before his execution‚ Stinney was allowed to see his family a single time.  On June 16‚ before 8 am‚ George was led to the execution chamber and seated in the electric chair. Rumors say that a Bible had to be used to boost him up since he was so short‚ but sources are conflicting about this point. The boy was restrained‚ and he declined the offer to say any last words.  A leather strap was placed in his mouth‚ at which time Geroge began to cry. His face was covered with a mask‚ and the switch was flipped‚ executing Geroge Stinney Jr. by means of electrocution.   George Stinney Memorial in Alcolu‚ SC Reopening of Case and Vacating the Conviction of George Stinney Jr.  Seventy long years after the trial of George Stinney Jr.‚ Circuit Judge Carmen Mullen vacated his conviction‚ citing “Fundamental‚ constitutional violations of due process” that occurred during his trial.  The lawyer for the Stineny family‚ who sought Geroge Jr’s exoneration‚ put forth the claim that Stinney’s confessions were coerced by police. He also brought to light the information that both of George Jr’s sisters claimed that he was with them at the time the girls were killed‚ making it impossible for Geroge Jr. to be the killer. Both of Stinney’s sisters were able to speak at the trial‚ still fighting for the justice of their brother 70 years later. Aime Stinney Rufferner‚ 77 at the time of the trial‚ would say of her brother‚  “He was quiet‚ but he was smart.” References  “70 Years After His Execution‚ 14-Year-Old George Stinney Jr. Has Been Cleared in Egregious SC Case”- Thomas L. Who Was Otto Frank‚ the Sole Survivor of the Frank Family?

Anne Frank was one of the most famous diarists in history. She was a Jewish teenager who went into hiding with her family during World War II.  Anne kept a diary that detailed her life during the two years they lived in an attic in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. Her diary has become one of the most famous books of all time as Anne gave the world a glimpse of what the war was like from the perspective of a young Jewish girl.  The diary’s publication would not have been possible without Otto Frank‚ Anne’s father. He made it his mission to publish the diary to fulfill his daughter’s wish to become a writer.  “I finally realized that I must do my schoolwork to keep from being ignorant‚ to get on in life‚ to become a journalist because that’s what I want! I know I can write… but it remains to be seen whether I really have talent…” Anne wrote.  Otto is the only survivor of their family of four. Let’s learn more about him. Otto Frank at the International Youth Congress Who Is Otto Frank? Otto Heinrich Frank was born in Frankfurt‚ Germany‚ on May 12‚ 1889. He was the second of four children born to Michael and Alice Frank. He was raised as a liberal Jew in an upper-middle-class family.  Otto studied at the Heidelberg University and traveled to the United States to work. One of his work experiences was in the famous Macy’s Department Store‚ thanks to Heidelberg University classmate Nathan Straus Jr.‚ who later became a journalist and politician. It wasn’t the only time Otto would be calling Straus for help getting to the U.S. Otto left the U.S. in 1909 because of his father’s death.  Military Service Otto was drafted for military service in August 1915 to serve in the First World War. Otto’s two brothers also served in the Imperial German Army. Otto ended his service as a lieutenant.  After the war‚ he worked at a bank that the Frank family managed.  On May 12‚ 1925‚ Otto married scrap metal business heiress Edith Hollander. The couple had two children: Margot‚ who was born on February 16‚ 1926‚ and Anne‚ who was born on June 12‚ 1929.  Otto Frank and his family. From the Anne Frank Fonds‚ Basel‚ Switzerland World War II Adolf Hitler established an absolute dictatorship in Germany in 1933. Without rhyme or reason‚ Jews were stripped of their wealth and dignity. Many were killed.  That year‚ Otto took his immediate family to Amsterdam‚ hoping they would be away from Nazism. He worked as the Amsterdam agent for Opekta‚ a pectin and spice company. In 1938‚ Otto opened his own spice business.  In May 1940‚ Germany invaded the Netherlands. Because he was a Jew‚ Otto was no longer allowed to own a business in occupied Amsterdam. He transferred control of the company to his employees.  Even before this invasion‚ Otto tried to get UK visas for his family but failed. He also wrote to his old college friend‚ Straus‚ to ask for help getting visas to the U.S. The letters Otto and Straus exchanged were published in a book titled For the Sake of the Children: The Letters Between Otto Frank and Nathan Straus Jr. At the time‚ Straus was the administrator of the United States Housing Authority.  One of the letters read: “I am forced to look out for emigration and as far as I can see the U.S.A. is the only country we could go to. Perhaps you remember that we have two girls. It is for the sake of the children mainly that we have to care for. Our own fate is of less importance.” Straus tried to help Otto‚ but when Germany invaded the Netherlands‚ no embassies could process the family’s documents.  One nation granted Otto a visa: Cuba. Unfortunately‚ it was for him alone‚ and he would have been forced to leave his family behind.  Anne Frank’s Diary The family was left without any other option but to hide. Margot had already received a summons for labor duty in Germany. Otto brought his family to the attic of the building where his former spice company operated. They lived behind a concealed bookcase along with the van Pels‚ known as van Daans in Anne’s diary.  Most of everything that happened next was told in Anne’s diary. She wrote for two years‚ until the hiding place was discovered by German officials in August 1944.  Otto was separated from his family—he was sent to a men’s concentration camp in Poland‚ while his wife and daughters ended up in a concentration camp in northern Germany. Edith died from sickness on January 6‚ 1945‚ just three weeks before the camp was liberated. Margot and Anne died a month later.  Otto was liberated on January 27‚ 1945. He returned to Amsterdam to look for his family but soon learned he was the sole survivor.  Some of Otto’s friends saved some of the things the family left at their hiding place‚ including photographs and Anne’s diary.  The last known photograph of Anne from May 1942 Otto read Anne’s diary. Soon‚ he began transcribing and sharing it with family and friends‚ who persuaded him to publish it. They agreed that Anne’s musings were too important not to share.  Otto typed out the contents of Anne’s diary and turned it into a manuscript. He edited out parts he thought should stay within the family.  The first edition of the diary was published in Dutch as Het Acheterhuis (The House Behind). It was translated into English and many other languages as Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl or simply The Diary of Anne Frank.  To date‚ the book has sold over 30 million copies in 67 languages. What Happened to Otto Frank After the War? Otto married a fellow Jewish survivor‚ Elfriede Geiringer‚ in 1953. They settled in Basel‚ Switzerland‚ and spent the rest of their lives distributing and publishing Anne Frank’s diary while educating people about the Holocaust.  The couple also used proceeds from the diary to promote human rights and social justice. They prevented the demolition of the building where the Franks lived during the war and helped turn it into a museum known as the Anne Frank House. Otto died of lung cancer on August 19‚ 1980. He named the Anne Frank Foundation in Basel as his heir. The post Who Was Otto Frank‚ the Sole Survivor of the Frank Family? first appeared on History Defined.

Keelhauling: Taking Punishment to the Extreme

Keelhauling: Taking Punishment to the Extreme

It’s not a term that many people today are very familiar with because no one has been exposed to it. But‚ hundreds and even thousands of years ago‚ it was‚ unfortunately‚ one of the most barbaric and sadistic methods of torture ever imaginable.  Keelhauling is a word that in the 1800s would make you shudder and shake if you were a sailor. It was a type of punishment that tied a person up by a rope and dragged them along the bottom of the keel. Before the process starts‚ the sailor is stripped‚ and his arms and legs are tied up so he cannot swim. A chain and cannonball are tied to his arms or legs‚ and two ropes to control him‚ one from the mast and another along the bottom of the boat.   The weight would pull the sailor to the bottom near the keel where he usually would sink and nearly drown‚ but the navy could pull on the second rope attached to his arm and pull him up. This would force him to slam against the hull and experience excruciating pain and torture. Sometimes sharks would find themselves flesh to bite on‚ or barnacles cut deep into their skin‚ making the punishment worse.  If you ever saw Game of Thrones‚ it was like watching Theon Greyjoy be tortured by Ramsay Snow. He didn’t kill him‚ but he did everything in his power to make him suffer in the most gruesome of ways. Keelhauling was a tactic that became most popular in the 1600s and 1700s‚ but its history goes much further back. A Tudor woodcut print of Keelhauling. Tudor period (1485-1603). Bournville Village Trust‚ Birmingham‚ England Keelhauling’s Torture Keelhaul comes from the Dutch word “kielhalen‚” which means “to haul under the keel of a ship.” The purpose of keelhauling wasn’t to kill a sailor‚ for this was always the easy way out. Instead‚ it was to make them suffer as many injuries as they possibly could while keeping them barely alive. They would sometimes put them underwater for a couple of minutes‚ nearly drowning them to death‚ before pulling them up and then slamming them against the boat before moving them back down.  The speed at which the boat moved meant everything. The faster it moved‚ the worse the punishment. Oil-soaked sponges were sometimes put in the victim’s mouth so they could catch some breath underwater‚ keeping them alive. It was like tying someone to the back of the car in today’s times and dragging them along the road. After punishment‚ the sailor was brought up and inspected by the ship’s captain. If the captain wasn’t satisfied with the injuries‚ he sent the sailor back down to experience more pain.  According to the Universal Dictionary of the Marine in 1780‚ keelhauling was “plunging the delinquent repeatedly under the ship’s bottom on one side‚ and hoisting him up on the other‚ after having passed under the keel.” Added to that‚ though‚ which shows the ultimate goal isn’t death‚ it says‚ “the culprit is allowed sufficient intervals to recover the sense of pain‚ of which indeed he is frequently deprived during the operation.”  Many times‚ though‚ the process did kill the victim‚ either by drowning‚ loss of blood‚ being eaten by sea creatures‚ or their heads being smashed to the point of death. Other times‚ they barely stayed alive and instead suffered mental torture and trauma for the rest of their life for what they endured.  The sailor also almost always lost limbs‚ including arms and legs‚ and experienced life-long physical injuries. They were held off the side of the ship as a warning to others of the penalties that would happen if they didn’t follow orders. Illustration from La Marine‚ by Pacini The History of Keelhauling The first evidence of some form of keelhauling goes back to around 700 BC when the Greeks performed it in the Rhodian Maritime. Artifacts and vase art were produced that depicted this act. There have been rumors that pirates did it as an alternative to walking the plank or hanging a prisoner‚ but there’s no official record of this.  However‚ the Dutch Navy was notorious for performing the act between 1560 and 1863‚ making it a very common practice. In 1652‚ under the command of Jan Van Riebeeck‚ a sailor was recorded to have been keelhauled and whipped with 150 lashes. Following that‚ he was enslaved for two years. In 1673‚ Cornelis Evertsen the Youngest performed the most graphic and gruesome act of keelhauling by punishing two sailors who committed murder.  People saw this as an acceptable form of punishment back then because sailors were viewed as workers who had to perform their jobs and obey their superiors‚ and if they didn’t‚ they had to be punished. The English Royal Navy was also said to have done it in the 16th and 17th centuries. Most felt like keelhauling died in the mid-1880s‚ and the British denied ever using the form of punishment after 1860. Lieve Verschuier: The Keelhauling of the Ship’s Surgeon of Admiral Jan van Nes. Between 1645 and 1686 However‚ in 1882‚ two Egyptian sailors were punished near Alexandria in Great Britain‚ as recorded in the Parliamentary Papers in the Great House of Commons. It was also witnessed by many who were horrified at what they saw.  “Yesterday I tried to write a description of a most horrible sight. It was so revoltingly cruel‚ so barbarous‚ so infamously brutal‚ that I gave it up‚” the London Morning Advertiser wrote in 1882. While keelhauling is no longer used‚ other methods of torture have been devised as a replacement. Birching was a technique used in the early 20th century‚ where a sailor was punished by being beaten with 12 to 24 strokes from a birch stick. Today‚ many are familiar with waterboarding‚ which was used as an interrogation technique against terrorists to get information out of them. Again‚ the purpose of these punishments‚ like keelhauling‚ wasn’t to punish them but rather inflict enormous pain on the person.
