On Tuesday, Moscow’s Basmanny District Court ordered the arrest of Yulia Navalnaya, Alexei Navalny’s widow, in absentia. The court, infamous for its controversial high-profile trials, charged her with involvement in an extremist group, a similar charge to those her late husband was arrested and sent to prison for. According to Russian news agency RIA Novosti, Navalnaya has also been added to an international wanted list after hiding “from the preliminary investigation” of her “crimes.” She has become a leading voice against Putin from abroad in Germany. “Please do not forget to write the main thing: Vladimir Putin is a murderer and a war criminal,” Navalnaya wrote on X in response to her arrest. “He belongs in jail.” Alexey Navalny was a Russian opposition leader and one of Putin’s most outspoken critics. He founded the Anti-Corruption Foundation, which vows to “fight Putin until we win!” He was sent to the Russian “special regime” penal colony above the Arctic Circle. Nicknamed the “Polar Wolf,” it is the strictest and most secure penal colony in Russia.  Navalny died under mysterious circumstances in February. Prison officials told his mother he had died of “sudden death syndrome” and his death certificate states he died of natural causes. Three days after Navalny died, she released a video declaring, “Putin killed the father of my children.” She also boldly accused Putin of poisoning him with Novichok, a Soviet-era nerve agent, and “torturing” his body to erase the evidence. Navalnaya was named chairman of the Human Rights Foundation on July 1 and is involved with her late husband’s Anti-Corruption Foundation.
