On Wednesday, 35-year-old Italian police officer, Christian Di Martino, was stabbed at Milan’s Lambrate train station by a man who had been throwing stones at the trains and had assaulted a middle-aged female passenger. As the officer confronted the man, now known to be a Moroccan national with previous convictions who had been living in Italy illegally, the policeman was stabbed multiple times in the back. He was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment and remains in “serious” condition. In a separate incident, an Egyptian national, who had just been released from the police station after being interviewed on suspicion of robbery, began damaging property as he walked down the street, prompting officers to attempt to rearrest him. The man resisted arrest and began hurling rocks at the officers, resulting in the use of a taser by officers to neutralize him. When this failed, an officer was forced to use his firearm, inflicting a non-life-threatening wound on the 36-year-old man. Despite the frantic appeals of her father Amin Masih, authorities have turned a blind eye, claiming the young girl converted to Islam and wed her supposed abductor … The distraught family has made repeated pleas to investigators, even presenting documents that appear to show Sania’s forced conversion and wedding. However, the police have remained unmoved, indifferent to the potential criminality of marrying a child. This is not an isolated case. Pakistan has an endemic of abductions, rapes, forced conversions, and forced marriages of minority children and women. The Associated Press reported in 2020 that, each year, nearly 1,000 non-Muslim girls are forcibly converted to Islam in Pakistan, largely to pave the way for underage marriages that are non-consensual.  The lack of accountability for perpetrators has led to a surge in these types of crimes. In the first four months of this year, there has been a sharp increase in similar cases impacting young Christian and Hindu girls in Pakistan. Consider the case of Chanda Maharaj, also known as Chanda Kumari, a Hindu girl. Based on a court ruling, she has recently been sent back to the Muslim man who abducted her. This occurred after she spent a year and three months in a shelter home. Chanda was 15 when she was kidnapped by a Muslim on 12 August 2022. However, on October 20 a court ruled that her conversion and ‘marriage’ were valid and sent her back to her kidnapper, Shaman Magsi. The parents appealed, and in December 2022 Chandra was taken again to the shelter home although she had clearly expressed to the court her wish to be with her family. The Pakistani persecution against Chanda did not end there. In March of 2024, the court determined that Chanda’s biological age made it legal for her to be with her ‘husband,’ although her birth certificate said she was not yet 17. As a result, she was taken back to her abductor. Respinti notes that, “There has been no hearing; she has not been heard [at a court of law], and her parents learned about her situation after she was taken back to the home of her kidnapper [against her will].” On 11 April 2024, UN experts expressed dismay at the continuing lack of protection for young women and girls belonging to minority communities in Pakistan. The UN Office of the High Commissioner summarized their report: “Christian and Hindu girls remain particularly vulnerable to forced religious conversion, abduction, trafficking, child, early and forced marriage, domestic servitude and sexual violence,” the experts said. “The exposure of young women and girls belonging to religious minority communities to such heinous human rights violations and the impunity of such crimes can no longer be tolerated or justified.” The experts expressed concern that forced marriages and religious conversions of girls from religious minorities which have been coerced are validated by the courts, often invoking religious law to justify keeping victims with their abductors rather than allowing them to return them to their parents. “Perpetrators often escape accountability, with police dismissing crimes under the guise of ‘love marriages,’” they said. The experts highlighted specific cases of forced religious conversions, including Mishal Rasheed—a young girl who was abducted at gunpoint from her home while preparing for school in 2022. Rasheed was sexually assaulted, forcibly converted to Islam and forced to marry her abductor. A 2023 report by the World Sindhi Congress (WSC) also noted the police and judicial system’s lack of assistance for the abused girls: During the court or trial, judges are often strongly influenced by Islamic religious groups or individuals that advocate the conversion of Hindu girls to Islam. Very often, police officers and jury members have personal ties with influential Islamic groups who convince them to apply Sharia law during trial processes. Moreover, courtrooms are usually full of individuals shouting slogans that advocate Islamic principles as well as the conversion of victims. The situation in the country continues to aggravate as the governmental response and actions remain minimal. Islamic groups have also been preventing the enforcement of laws brought up by the National Assembly of Pakistan and the provinces like Sindh. Furthermore, due to the influential position of Islamist groups, political parties in the country have commonly been reluctant to raise the issue within the Parliament. The lack of measures taken by Pakistani authorities to support minorities has overall left religious minorities, regardless of their gender, unprotected. In a 2021 Joint Motion for a Resolution, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) statedthat “abduction, forced conversion to Islam, rape, and forced marriage remained an imminent threat for religious minority women and children in 2020, particularly those from the Hindu and Christian faiths.” Silvia Sardone, a MEP, also brought this issue to the attention of the parliament in 2020:  Although the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act forbids marriage under the age of 18, a court in Pakistan has ruled that the forced abduction, conversion and marriage of Huma Younus, a 14-year-old Christian girl from Karachi, is valid. The judges ruled that as per Sharia law, even if Huma was a minor, the marriage between her and her abductor Abdul Jabbar is valid as she had already had her first menstrual cycle. Meanwhile, Pakistan remains a recipient of the EU’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+). This is despite concerns raised in the GSP+ assessment of Pakistan regarding the number of kidnappings and forced conversions of Hindu and Christian children. The EU’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) “gives developing countries a special incentive to pursue sustainable development and good governance. In return, the EU cuts its import duties to zero on more than two thirds of the tariff lines of their exports.” This preferential status is conditional on GSP+ countries demonstrating tangible progress in the implementation of 27 international conventions on human and labor rights, good governance, and other issues. MEP Sardone asked the European Commission: Given the growing concerns regarding the persecution of Christians in Pakistan, and increasing violence against women and girls, will the Commission consider suspending Pakistan’s GSP+ mechanism in the light of its repeated violations of international conventions? Does Pakistan’s GSP+ country scorecard cover the rights of the child? What actions can the Commission take to return Huma Younus to her Christian home and protect other girls in future? The researchers found 27 reports of the Pfizer RSV vaccine (Abrysvo) and seven reports of the GSK RSV vaccine (Arexvy) mistakenly administered to children under 2 between Aug. 21, 2023, and March 18, 2024. “While rare, vaccine administration errors are known to occur and may increase after a new vaccine or product is introduced,” Dr. Pedro Moro, lead author of the study, told MedPage Today. Both vaccines were first approved in May 2023 for people ages 60 and older. Seven reports described adverse health events including fevers, vomiting, coughing and injection site swelling. One baby was hospitalized for cardiorespiratory arrest within 24 hours of receiving the GSK RSV vaccine. The baby had a history of congenital heart disease and was hospitalized at the time of the VAERS report. VAERS also contains at least one report of a 27-day-old baby who died in the doctor’s office immediately after receiving Pfizer’s RSV vaccine, but that report was not included in the Pediatrics study. The Defender, which reported on the death in March, worked with data analyst and VAERS expert Albert Benavides to identify several instances in the VAERS database of severe adverse events in newborns, in pregnant women and people in age groups for which the RSV vaccines were not approved. Moro did not immediately respond to a question from The Defender about why the study did not mention this report. The Pediatrics study authors identified the cases by searching VAERS for children younger than 2 who received an RSV vaccine and by doing a text search using keywords such as “infant,” “child,” “newborn,” and others, which they said was conducted consistent with CDC policy. Benavides told The Defender identifying all of the cases associated with a given drug is challenging. For example, he said approximately 25% of VAERS entries have no age data, so one has to read the narrative summaries to find that information. The VAERS database is a passive surveillance system where anyone — including doctors, other vaccine administrators and the public — can report adverse events. The public health agencies monitor the system to detect safety signals associated with vaccines. The signals are then subject to further investigation. The Pediatrics researchers noted that the major limitation of their study is that VAERS has under- and over-reporting biases and inconsistency in the completeness of reports. “Health care providers should not administer Pfizer or GSK RSV vaccines to infants and young children,” the study authors said in their discussion. They noted that administration errors are preventable with proper training. Today’s report was published a few months after the CDC notified providers in January about 25 reports that Pfizer and GSK’s RSV vaccines had been mistakenly administered to infants and 128 reports that GSK’s vaccine — which is not approved for pregnant women — was mistakenly given to them. Recent history of RSV approvals In May 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved GSK’s Arexvy and Pfizer’s Abrysvo to prevent RSV-associated lower respiratory tract disease in adults ages 60 and up. Although Pfizer’s vaccine is bivalent and GSK’s RSVPreF3-Mat is monovalent, “the vaccines are otherwise similar,” according to an editorial by Dr. Sonja A. Rasmussen and Denise J. Jamieson, published in theNew England Journal of Medicine. GSK halted its trials of Arexvy for pregnant women after identifying an increased risk of preterm birth among vaccinated mothers. Pfizer — the team Simões was on — also found an elevated number of preterm births in trial participants in the vaccine group, but said the number wasn’t statistically significant. Ethicists writing in The BMJ said that the mothers in the Pfizer trial should have been informed of the GSK signal. Instead, the information was not made public until much later. While awaiting sentencing in Washington, Idoni suffered a stroke just last week and had to be rushed to the hospital. It is as yet unknown whether her mistreatment in prison contributed to her hospitalization. Jean Marshall, 74, was deprived of sufficient clothing and heat during extreme freezing winter cold, resulting in the contracting of pneumonia, which went untreated for three weeks. She has been denied an urgently needed hip surgery, contrary to her physician’s instructions, resulting in excruciating pain and reduced mobility of her right leg. Marshall was admitted to the ER just prior to her trial last fall and has now been effectively rendered lame as she continues to be denied proper medical care. Chris Smith (R-NJ), co-chair of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission and co-chair of the House Pro-life Caucus, Marshall, who is a registered nurse, said that just a month before her trial last fall, she was admitted to the hospital “for excruciating pain in my hip and an inability to walk.” Despite a scheduled surgery and medical information from the doctor, the pro-abortion Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly refused last fall any accommodations for Marshall to undergo the needed surgery. Since then, her condition has only worsened, with her right leg feeling numb and her right knee unable to bend, forcing her to drag her right leg when she walks, which she avoids due to the extreme pain. LifeSiteNews has also been told by one of the pro-lifers, who wished to remain anonymous, that during pre-trial interrogations, pro-lifers were harassed and manipulated when questioned by the FBI, without being told their full rights until afterward. In a show of intimidation, defendants were interrogated by both the FBI and government agents from the division for Domestic Terrorism, for the purpose of gathering information, although their offense consisted in nothing more than peaceful civil disobedience to the infamous pro-abortion FACE Act, which, after the Dobbsdecision, now lacks the legal foundation previously cited in Roe v. Wade. This interrogation of defendants led the government to learn of communications between the pro-lifers concerning the rescue of the unborn that took place at the late-term D.C. abortion facility, the Washington-Surgi Clinic, on October 22, 2020. The DOJ and FBI used this information as grounds for the charge of “conspiracy against rights,” which carries up to 10 years in prison, thereby maximizing penalties against the pro-life defendants in a novel legal move untested in court until the D.C. FACE Act trials last fall. The above instances of prolonged solitary confinement, the humiliation of a prisoner through misuse of shackles, withholding of proper clothing, heating, medication, and medical treatment from an infirm elderly woman, the curtailing of the free exercise of religion, and the intimidation and harassment of defendants in pre-trial interrogations can all qualify as acts of torture and/or inhumane treatment of prisoners under American law and international standards. Torture and mistreatment of prisoners is expressly prohibited under American domestic law, under binding treaties adopted by the U.S., and under non-binding international standards to which the U.S. has repeatedly been called by the UN to fully conform. The 8th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states: “Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.” Additionally, the U.S. government is bound by several international treaties to which it is a party, which prohibit torture. The 1949 Geneva Conventions was signed by the U.S. in 1949 and ratified 1955; the American Convention on Human Rights was signed in 1977; the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights was signed in 1977and ratified 1992; and the United Nations Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment was signed in 1988 and ratified in 1994. In December 2015, the U.N. General Assembly adopted rules for the humane treatment of prisoners, which now serve as an increasingly accepted international standard, titled United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (the Nelson Mandela Rules). These Rules, which the U.N. has pressed the U.S. to adopt, contain stipulations that expressly define and prohibit various acts of torture, including prolonged solitary confinement, placement in a constantly lit cell, and withholding of proper medical care. Prolonged solitary confinement “in excess of 15 consecutive days” and “placement of a prisoner in a dark or constantly lit cell” are specifically prohibited as punitive action amounting to “torture” and “cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.” As recent as December 2023, the Human Rights Committee of the U.N. stated in its Concluding Observations on the Fifth Periodic Report of the United States of America that it was concerned with “extensive use of solitary confinement in the State party, including prolonged and even indefinite solitary confinement.” The committee called on the U.S. to conform its practice and legislation to the Nelson Mandella Rules. In a protest over agricultural policies, a group of Polish farmers has occupied the parliament building, insisting on a personal dialogue with Prime Minister Donald Tusk regarding the EU's Green Deal. A group of Polish farmers initiated an occupation of the Sejm, the lower house of the Polish parliament, on Thursday afternoon to press for a meeting with Prime Minister Donald Tusk concerning the EU’s Green Deal policies.
