Anti-Israel student protesters barricaded themselves inside a Columbia University campus building on Tuesday morning‚ demanding that the university take action to divest from Israel amid its war with Hamas.  The protesters took over Hamilton Hall after the university began to suspend some students who have taken part in a weeks-long anti-Israel encampment on campus. Shafik added that Columbia would not be divesting from Israel.  “To that end‚ since Wednesday‚ a small group of academic leaders has been in constructive dialogue with student organizers to find a path that would result in the dismantling of the encampment and adherence to University policies going forward. Regretfully‚ we were not able to come to an agreement‚” she said.  Similar anti-Israel protests have cropped up around the country‚ including in states like California‚ Utah‚ Texas‚ and Virginia. 

At least nine states have filed lawsuits against the Biden administration over its new Title IX rules forcing public schools to allow trans-identifying males to compete in women’s sports and use women’s bathrooms. Earlier this month‚ the Education Department unveiled new Title IX regulations to prohibit schools from enforcing blanket bans on trans-identifying males in girls’ sports set to take effect in August. Title IX is the 1972 federal civil rights law prohibiting sex-based discrimination at schools receiving federal funding. Montana led a coalition that included Louisiana‚ Mississippi‚ and Idaho. Likewise‚ Alabama‚ Georgia‚ Florida‚ and South Carolina teamed up to file a joint suit. Texas filed its own lawsuit. “For 50 years Title IX has protected girls and women’s rights‚ but President Biden has abandoned those protections to appease the woke left‚” Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen said. “This rule is not based in scientific reality. It redefines biological sex which will allow men to compete in women’s sports‚ violate women’s privacy‚ and put women and girls in dangerous situations on campus. I will continue to fight to protect women and uphold Montana’s laws against federal overreach‚” the attorney general added. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton accused the administration of attempting to twist the federal law’s meaning to align with “radical gender ideology.” “Texas will not allow Joe Biden to rewrite Title IX at whim‚ destroying legal protections for women in furtherance of his radical obsession with gender ideology‚” Paxton wrote in a statement Monday. “This attempt to subvert federal law is plainly illegal‚ undemocratic‚ and divorced from reality. Texas will always take the lead to oppose Biden’s extremist‚ destructive policies that put women at risk.” The Biden administration’s new regulations will apply to all public K-12 schools‚ colleges‚ and universities that receive federal funding. The new rules state that schools that receive federal funding may not ban biological males in girls’ sports wholesale‚ but they may exclude them on a case-by-case basis. “Sex-related criteria” at schools that would limit or ban a trans-identified student from playing on the team of their preferred gender must meet two standards. First‚ the criteria must be related to an “important educational objective‚” and second‚ the criteria must also “minimize harms” to the trans-identified student. High school girls have been injured playing with trans-identifying males. Last year in North Carolina‚ a female high school volleyball player suffered severe trauma to her head and neck after a trans-identifying male player spiked a volleyball that hit her head. Another example of an “important educational objective” would be “fairness in competition.” Female athletes at high schools and colleges in several states have spoken out against competing against biological males. The updated rules may conflict with laws in several states restricting trans-identifying students from playing on girls’ teams or using girls’ facilities.

Former President Donald Trump said he has “too much respect” for the office of president to go after Joe Biden if Trump wins a second term in the White House. The former president sat down for an in-depth interview covering a range of issues for a Time Magazine feature story that was published Tuesday morning. During the discussion‚ Trump was asked about pursuing retribution against Democrats‚ including President Biden‚ whom Trump says is directing the multiple prosecutions against him. The question began with the Time reporter attempting to argue against Trump’s statement that Biden is behind the criminal cases against Trump‚ saying‚ “I just want to say for the record‚ there’s no evidence that President Biden directed this prosecution against you. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN)‚ a member of the leftist “Squad‚” is again facing the prospect of being censured‚ this time for suggesting that some Jewish students support genocide. During a visit last week to Columbia University‚ Omar spoke with a Fox 5 New York reporter about anti-Semitism as she walked on campus with her daughter‚ Isra Hirsi‚ a Barnard student who was recently arrested while participating in an anti-Israel protest on campus. Omar noted that she had just met some Jewish students in an encampment. “I think it is really unfortunate‚” Omar continued‚ “that people don’t care about the fact that all Jewish kids should be kept safe‚ and that we should not have to tolerate anti-Semitism or bigotry for all Jewish students‚ whether they’re pro-genocide or anti-genocide.” One of her Republican colleagues‚ Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE)‚ reportedly took umbrage at the comment about Jewish students and said that he was putting together a censure resolution in response. “Talking about pro-genocide Jewish students is wrong‚” Bacon told Axios‚” adding that “folks can protest Israel‚ but don’t blame Jewish-American students for Israel. That is by definition anti-Semitism.” A spokesperson for Omar said the congresswoman “clearly condemned antisemitism and bigotry for all Jewish students‚” adding‚ “Attempts to misconstrue her words by drafting this baseless resolution are meant to distract” from the Gaza conflict and anti-war protests. It would not be the first time Omar faced the ire of her colleagues. In February‚ Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said she would force a censure vote against Omar for remarks concerning her native Somalia‚ but did not follow through. Adam Schiff (D-CA)‚ Rashida Tlaib (D-MI)‚ and Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) were among the House members who were censured last year. In a post to X last week‚ Omar sought to defend the protesters at Columbia‚ who have demanded the university divest from Israel‚ and chided public officials and media “making this about anything else are inflaming the situation and need to bring calmness and sanity back.” Rep. Anthony D’Esposito (R-NY) was among those who fired back‚ saying‚ “Ilhan‚ there’s video. Lots of it. These antisemites don’t need police &; public leaders to make them look bad.
