The Democratic National Committee chair forum quickly turned into a cringefest on Thursday night when protesters started controlling the questions, a candidate broke out into song, and every candidate agreed that former Vice President Kamala Harris lost because of “racism and misogyny.” The forum at Georgetown University was hosted by MSNBC and three of the network’s most leftist hosts: Jen Psaki, Symone Sanders, and Jonathan Capehart. In between the outbursts of climate change protesters, eight candidates attempted to put their vision forward for a party that was blown out in the 2024 election. It didn’t take long, however, for the forum to give way to some strange moments. One candidate breaks into a song for her opening statement. Dr. Quintessa Hathaway of Arkansas told the audience she wanted to give them “something that’s been on [her] heart here over the last couple days.” Hathaway then began singing, “You fight on, you fight on, you fight on. When your government is doing you wrong, you fight on.” When Hathaway finished her song, a few sympathy claps broke out in the audience. WATCH: Climate protesters derail the forum from the beginning. It took no time for leftist climate change protesters to disrupt the forum. Immediately after MSNBC host Symone Sanders told the candidates, “I’m going to kick off our questioning tonight,” the climate activists started shouting questions, and Sanders struggled to regain control of the conversation. WATCH: Every candidate agrees that Kamala Harris lost because of “racism and misogyny.” When journalist Jonathan Capehart asked the candidates about “racism and misogyny” depriving Harris of an election victory, everyone quickly raised their hands in agreement. Republicans and conservative political commentators had some fun with the moment, pointing out that Democrats refuse to change their message despite the American people clearly stating that they’re fed up with the overused talking points. WATCH: A former DHS official says the Republican Party is “the biggest threat to national security.” Speaking of overused talking points, one DNC chair candidate, Nate Snyder, doubled down on the argument that Trump and the Republican Party represent “the biggest threat” to American national security. “We need to push back with everything we got, and my intention is to disrupt, dismantle this propaganda lying machine,” Snyder, who used to work for the Department of Homeland Security, said of the Trump administration. WATCH: Symone Sanders lets leftist protesters control the questioning. Sanders was again interrupted by protesters later in the forum, one of whom shouted, “Democrats are still taking money from the arsonists!” while Sanders was attempting to move on to a new topic. Sanders then caved to the leftists shouting about the “climate emergency,” telling them, “Okay, let’s talk about the climate emergency … we’re going to skip ahead. Jen Psaki is going to ask about the climate. Let’s go.” WATCH: Another candidate claims that social media algorithms favor Republicans and ‘push down’ Democratic narratives. With a straight face, Ben Wikler, the chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, claimed that “thumbs on the scale” are likely “trying to push down Democratic narratives” and “lift up Republican narratives.” Of course, none of the MSNBC journalists nor Wikler mentioned how the opposite was true when the Biden administration pressured social media companies like Twitter and Facebook to censor conservative voices. So far, President Trump’s actions on “diversity, equity, and inclusion” have seen federal DEI offices shuttered and DEI officials placed on mandatory leave. But that isn’t the end of the story. Greater enforcement of civil rights law is coming, and American colleges and universities should be worried. In President Trump’s first anti-DEI Executive Order, he sought to eliminate all DEI (both legal and illegal) across the federal government – a broad stroke that extends to all agencies’ “‘equity-related’ grants or contracts.” This directive includes many grants that directly or indirectly reach colleges – and it has already had some effect. According to Arizona State University’s provost, several agencies have told grantees to “cease and desist all DEIA activities required of their contracts or grants.” Already, Rutgers University has canceled an equity-related conference supported by Jobs for the Future, a national nonprofit using funds from the Department of Labor. Trump’s second anti-DEI order – designed to uproot and destroy illegal treatment throughout the country – will hit colleges even harder. This order notes that institutions of higher education are among those that “have adopted and actively use dangerous, demeaning, and immoral race- and sex-based preferences,” and instructs federal officials to prepare investigative, legal, and regulatory action against universities that engage in such illegal activities. Far too many American colleges and universities make violating civil rights laws part of their daily routine. More than simply operating DEI offices (which themselves often blatantly violate civil rights law), many colleges support discriminatory scholarship programs that violate civil rights laws so clearly that even the Biden administration regularly found them illegal. These scholarships boldly discriminate based on race or sex by explicitly limiting themselves to, for example, members of “historically underrepresented U.S. racialized minority group[s]” (as in one scholarship offered by the American Anthropological Association and advertised by the University of Chicago). More examples include a scholarship limited to “Asian/Pacific Islander lesbian, bisexual, or queer women or transgender individuals” (advertised by the University of Rochester), or the Brown and Caldwell Minority Scholarship, which is limited to those who identify as members of minority groups (advertised by the University of Michigan, Yale University, and many others).  Closer to home, University of California, Berkeley’s Cal Alumni Association, a separate nonprofit organization, offers a scholarship only available to those who “identify as Black/African American/African.” Berkeley proudly includes this scholarship on its own website. These all are examples of external scholarships, where off-campus organizations (those offering the scholarships) are the ones discriminating and violating civil rights laws. But when a federally-funded college advertises such opportunities to its students, it too is violating civil rights and must be held accountable. Heritage Foundation interns have found hundreds, if not thousands, of examples of such violations. But external scholarships aren’t the only issue. In other instances, universities act on the behest of the government to execute federal programs that discriminate because Congress requires it. As one example, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) operates a Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) program that is funded by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and which only funds students who are from “historically underrepresented racial or ethnic groups,” have disabilities, or are from “low-income background[s].” This program operates under the authority of the HHS’s National Research Service Award (NRSA) program – a program Congress specifically instructed the HHS to run “in a manner that will result in the recruitment of women, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds (including racial and ethnic minorities), into fields of biomedical or behavioral research.” Needless to say, this blatantly violates the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause. The second anti-DEI Executive order instructs federal officials to issue guidance on how institutions of higher education must comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling in Students for Fair Admission v. Harvard. In that decision, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote, “Eliminating racial discrimination means eliminating all of it.” That means discriminatory DEI offices and scholarships must go. The clock on DEI is ticking. Within 120 days, the guidance – and recommendations for enforcement – will be released. Under current law, violating civil rights can mean the end of all federal funding. We can expect the Trump administration to use this tool vigorously to incentivize change throughout the education sector. Richard Grenell, who U.S. President Donald Trump appointed as an envoy for special missions, traveled to Venezuela on Friday to urge the socialist government to accept deportation flights from the U.S. A Trump administration official told The Daily Wire that Grenell is there to get them to take back illegal aliens in the U.S., including most notably Tren de Aragua gang members. This trip was being coordinated between the State Department and the White House. “There is no better messenger for President Trump,” a top Grenell ally told The Daily Wire. “The Venezuelans will clearly be made to understand that there will be consequences if they do not do what they are told.” Grenell, who served as U.S. Ambassador to Germany and later Acting Director of National Intelligence during the first Trump term, is known for aggressively executing the president’s orders. “I would urge the Maduro government, the Maduro regime in Venezuela, to heed special envoy Ric Grenell’s message,” said Mauricio Claver-Carone, Trump’s special envoy to Latin America. “Ultimately there will be consequences otherwise.” The trip comes after the Trump administration quickly forced Colombia’s leftist government to reverse course after it had denied incoming U.S. deportation flights. During a legislative special session on Thursday, the Tennessee Senate passed the Education Freedom Act of 2025 by a vote of 20 to 13. The bill had passed the House 54 to 44 earlier in the day. It now heads to the governor’s desk for his signature. With the stroke of Gov. Bill Lee’s pen, Tennessee will become the 13th state in the nation to enact universal (or near-universal) school choice. While it’s not official yet, there is no question regarding whether Gov. Lee will sign the bill into law. He has been an enthusiastic education freedom champion and called the Tennessee General Assembly for a special session with the purpose of passing the Education Freedom Act. Last month, Gov. Lee said, “When it comes to education, more freedom is what our children need to succeed. That means empowering parents with school choice…. that’s why we need to pass the Education Freedom Act in Tennessee.” According to Gov. Lee, “Education has the power to change the trajectory of a child’s life, and every Tennessee child deserves to attend the school that fits their unique needs — regardless of income or zip code.” The Tennessee Education Freedom website explains, “The Education Freedom Act will extend school choice to every family across rural and urban Tennessee, putting parents at the forefront of their child’s education so that students find the best school for their needs to succeed in the classroom and beyond.” The education scholarship amount will equal the state base funding amount per student, which is around $7,000. The funds can be used toward private school tuition and fees. If funds remain, they can be allocated toward required school textbooks, curricula, instructional materials, uniforms, tutoring services, school transportation fees, educational technology, test fees, early postsecondary courses, and educational therapies for qualifying students. Under this act, students must be enrolled in a private school to participate. The universal school choice program will be implemented in two steps. During the 2025-2026 school year, 20,000 scholarships will be available for students, with half of those directed toward students from households at or below 300% of the income for free or reduced-price lunch, students with a disability, or those already eligible for an existing Tennessee education savings account program. All students statewide are eligible to participate starting in the 2026-2027 school year. Beyond the private school scholarships, the Education Freedom Act also includes a $2,000 bonus for all 86,000 public school teachers in the state. Despite cries from the opposition, the school choice program will not harm public school finances. According to Representative William Lamberth (R-Portland) on the House floor on Thursday, Tennessee will continue to spend $7 billion annually on K-12 public education. Thanks to Gov. Lee’s steadfast commitment to education freedom for Tennesseans, the parents of more than 900,000 K-12 public school children and over 115,000 private school students will soon be empowered with school choice. Tennessee will join the universal school choice ranks with Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Utah, and West Virginia. Now, eyes turn to Texas as well as Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Wyoming. With a Republican trifecta in each of these states, it’s time for their lawmakers to advance universal education freedom.  As education freedom states reap the far-reaching academic, workforce development, economic, and societal benefits of a free market K-12 education environment, other states will be forced to take notice. Lawmakers in those states will have to decide if they will double down with the teacher unions in trapping children in failing schools — to the detriment of their state’s future — or empower the parents. By advancing laws that allow education funding to follow students, lawmakers will support parents and the general public, who, by majority, support school choice. With each state to pass universal school choice, the tide is turning toward a better and brighter future for America because nothing will impact the future of our country more than the education of the next generation.
