President Joe Biden is expected to announce new rules on Tuesday that will protect up to half a million illegal immigrants from deportation as his presumed opponent, Donald Trump, signals that he will conduct mass deportations if he wins a second term in the White House. The Biden administration’s new policy would ease the pathway to permanent residency for illegal immigrants married to U.S. citizens, The New York Times reported, citing officials familiar with the plan. It was first reported last week, and Tuesday’s formal announcement would mark the 12th anniversary of President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which protected some children in the U.S. illegally from deportation. Biden administration officials who were briefed on the new policy expect that it could affect up to 500,000 illegal immigrants, but the exact number remains unclear, according to the Times. Under the new rules implemented by the Department of Homeland Security, some illegal immigrant spouses of U.S. citizens would be given an easier path to apply for permanent residency and work permits. The president is also expected to announce a separate rule on Tuesday that would help DACA recipients, commonly referred to as “Dreamers,” receive work visas. Biden’s rules on illegal immigrants come as he faces an ongoing crisis at the southern border and voters voice their concerns about illegal immigration ahead of the 2024 presidential election. A fact sheet from the White House on the new protections includes requirements that illegal immigrants must have lived in the country for at least 10 years and be legally married to an American to qualify, Fox News reported. An illegal immigrant approved under Biden’s program could apply for permanent residency after three years and be eligible for a work permit for up to three years. “President Biden believes that securing the border is essential,” a White House spokesman said, according to Fox News. “He also believes in expanding lawful pathways and keeping families together, and that immigrants who have been in the United States for decades, paying taxes and contributing to their communities, are part of the social fabric of our country.” Republicans, led by Trump, have slammed Biden for his handling of immigration and border security. The president, however, has remained unapologetic for his border policies — even as Customs and Border Protection has reported record numbers of border encounters in the past three years. Trump has promised that if he wins in November, he will implement the “largest deportation” operation in U.S. history, calling illegal immigration “an invasion of our country.”

Actor Kevin Costner said he’s open to returning to the hit Western series “Yellowstone” if it makes sense to do so. The 69-year-old star shared his thoughts during a Monday appearance on TODAY. “I’ve supported that thing and I’ve loved it,” Costner said of the Taylor Sheridan drama series. “It’s been really important to me. I would love to go back under the right circumstances I think that all of us want. For me, it really needs to be the right circumstances.” “Saying there’s a chance, there’s always a chance,” he added. “I love the thing. You’ve got to be really clear about that.” Costner has previously indicated he is open to making a return to playing family patriarch John Dutton after some squabbles over contract obligations. The actor told GQ in May that he had signed on for seasons five, six, and seven but was thrown for a loop when the fifth season was split into two parts. Following speculation over why the actor exited the series, Paramount put out a statement in February 2023 stating, “Kevin Costner is a big part of ‘Yellowstone’ and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come.” Costner was also committed to working on his passion project, a three-part Western film series called “Horizon.” The actor wrote, produced, directed, and stars in the project. “Lord of the Rings” actor Ian McKellen was hospitalized after falling from the stage during a Monday performance at the Noël Coward Theater in London. The 85-year-old lost his balance and fell during a battle scene in “Player Kings,” a production of Shakespeare’s “Henry IV, Parts One and Two,” per BBC. McKellen reportedly cried out in pain after his fall, prompting staff to rush over and assist him. The report said the theater was “evacuated” and Tuesday night’s performance was also canceled. McKellen is expected to make a full recovery. “Thank you to our audience and the general public for their well wishes following Ian’s fall during this evening’s performance of ‘Player Kings,’” a statement from the theater said.  “Following a scan, the brilliant NHS team have assured us that he will make a speedy and full recovery and Ian is in good spirits,” it said. “The production has made the decision to cancel the performance on Tuesday 18 June so Ian can rest. Those affected will be contacted by their point of purchase as soon as possible tomorrow. Thank you to doctors Rachel and Lee who were on hand in the audience and to all the venue staff for their support.” An audience member told BBC the fall was “very shocking.” “As far as I saw, he was conscious because he was asking for assistance,” the witness explained. But recently, many have reported that even fast food costs too much due to inflation and the demands of higher wages. Hundreds of popular restaurant chains have closed locations this year, which is concerning. You might call it the restaurant apocalypse. When a meal for one person at McDonald’s costs nearly $20, most folks would rather add that money to their ever-climbing grocery bills. People are choosing not to eat out anymore, and that is a really bad sign for the economy in more ways that one. The workers are affected, the franchisees are affected, the landlords of the restaurant properties are affected, and then there are all the other bills that don’t get paid because of the initial folks who lost income. What restaurants are closing? Recently, you may have heard that Red Lobster has recently closed dozens of locations with more on the chopping block. But that’s not the only place shuttering their shops. They’ve filed for bankruptcy and many blame its ill-fated Ultimate Endless Shrimp promotion as being the straw that broke the lobster’s back. Fifteen Pizza Hut locations in Indiana closed overnight, due to a financial dispute with one of its largest franchisees. And there could be many more to come. The dispute centres on millions of dollars in unpaid bills and puts 129 more locations in Illinois, Georgia, South Carolina and Wisconsin at risk of closure. (source) Applebees has closed more than 300 restaurants in the past year, and another 25-35 locations are due to close this year. Boston Market used to have hundreds of locations but is now down to only 27 remaining after abrupt bankruptcies. It’s also the end of an era at Steak ‘N Shake. They’ve dwindled from more than 600 locations to 148 over the past few years. Other restaurants closing locations include Denny’s, Hardee’s, PDQ, MOD Pizza, TGIFriday’s, Dairy Queen, KFC, Cracker Barrel, Outback Steakhouse, and Arby’s. Whether you eat at these places or not, the abrupt closures are sending ripples through the economy. A lot of people are losing their jobs. The scenario is a lot bigger than not being able to get your favorite junk food fix. When a business closes overnight, all the folks who worked there are very suddenly out of a job. Forbes reports: Restaurant closures place workers in a precarious situation. Employees immediately lose their source of income and employment benefits, including health insurance. This can create significant financial hardship, especially without severance pay. If someone is working at a lower-paying job like a fast food restaurant, it’s probably difficult for them to have a hefty emergency fund to weather this storm. Some have complained they were even unable to get their last paychecks from closed locations, leaving them out of money that they had already earned. How does a person making minimum wage come up with the rent money when one of their checks is withheld? When their income stops instantly? This is an indicator of an economy that has been stretched thin. We’ve watched thousands of retail stores close over the years. We’ve watched banks closing branches quite suddenly. Now we’re watching as an American tradition – going out to eat – is beginning to dwindle. We used to go out to dinner for all sorts of reasons: an outing with friends, a date, a celebration for an accomplishment, a weekly event with the family, or something to eat when you have no time to cook. But with prices going up in every sector, a lot of folks are no longer willing to pay $20-30 per person for a meal – often one that isn’t even very high quality. A catholic school’s ability to operate in accordance with its faith is in jeopardy.  The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit heard oral arguments in St. Joseph Parish v. Nessel on Tuesday, June 11. The case involves a Catholic school in Michigan that is asking the court to protect its ability to hire staff who share its faith. The Michigan Supreme Court reinterpreted a state civil rights statute’s definition of sex in July 2022 to include sexual orientation without any exemption for religious organizations. In March 2023, the Michigan legislature wrote this into state law, expressly prohibiting discrimination on sexual orientation or gender identity.  The school’s right to hire staff who hold its views on marriage and gender is at risk. St. Joseph’s asks all staff to be practicing Catholics and uphold the faith.  St. Joseph’s also risks being sued for discrimination because of its beliefs about gender and marriage, as the law makes it illegal to decline to use staff or students’ preferred personal pronouns, or to have separate girls’ and boys’ bathrooms and locker rooms. Senior Counsel at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty Will Haun argued the case before the Sixth Circuit Court on June 11. “At stake for St. Joseph’s is whether or not St. Joseph can continue to operate as a Catholic parish, a Catholic school, a Catholic institution in Michigan without having to surrender its way of life or ask permission from the government first before it exercises its religion,” Haun told The Daily Signal.
