And none us care about these people patting themselves on the back. But during the event a camera captures Taylor’s reaction the moment someone on stage lists off the names they want to thank for their award. “And of course‚ God. Without God none of this would be possible.” You would’ve thought Taylor’s agent just fired her and said there’s a nationwide boycott on her albums and she now has to get a job at McDonalds. The pastor of Mission Bible Church in Costa Mesa‚ California regularly posts clips from his sermons on Instagram‚ but the reason for the wider-than-normal distribution of this particular message was that it made a target of a beloved cultural icon. The world outside the pastor’s window had become obsessed with singer-songwriter Taylor Swift‚ and he was not impressed. “When the hope of the world is someone in pink spandex and known for glitter bombs‚ you know that the world is in a woeful and grievous place‚” he declared. Wood was apparently incensed that TIME magazine‚ America’s traditional arbiter of global influence‚ had named Swift as its 2023 ‘Person of the Year’. Taking particular exception to a line in the magazine which described her as a ‘light’ in a dark time‚ he went to great lengths to explain that‚ in fact‚ a “middle-aged pop star” (Swift is 34) was no one’s idea of hope in a suffering world. That she couldn’t help you with your everyday problems‚ let alone your eternal ones. “Taylor Swift can never lay her body over that chasm‚ allowing us to walk over it to get into the graces of a mighty God‚” he rallied. “There is only one who ever could‚ and his name is Jesus.” In the background of all the break-up songs and glitter bombs‚ the vapours of Christian faith remain And so while we enjoy her music‚ and find her intriguing‚ there’s another part to the equation; the context within which Swift inevitably resides. It’s the dark world to which Jacobs referred in his editorial; the uncertain cultural moment that desperately demands some heroic light. Perhaps TIME is right: Swift’s popularity is found in her ability to illuminate our world in its gloomiest moments. Raised in a Christian home and formatively shaped in the Bible Belt hotspot of Nashville‚ Tennessee‚ Swift has publicly declared herself to be a Christian. In a famous clip in which she railed against the rise of Trumpian politics (and specifically the Republican senator Marsha Blackburn)‚ she expressed her anger at policies such as one which legislated against domestic violence victims. She was furious that Blackburn had suggested that such policies were in keeping with “Tennesee Christian values”‚ saying: “I live in Tennessee. I’m a Christian. That’s not what we stand for.” This outburst seemed to be a little slip of the mask for a figure who has generally adopted the ‘we don’t do God’ approach to entertainment-world-domination. Without interrogating the nature of her faith‚ we can take her word that she at least has one. Her lyrics offer few clues to what that faith looks like‚ and she makes only fleeting and occasional references to it. In the song ‘Soon you’ll get better’‚ Swift talks about turning to prayer – specifically to Jesus – when her mother was diagnosed with cancer: “Holy orange bottles‚ each night I pray to you / Desperate people find faith‚ so now I pray to Jesus too.” Like many Christians‚ her theology seems to embrace the power of God to work alongside and through medicine‚ but she still makes space for the work of the miraculous. But I ask you‚ what kind of Christian would be upset by that someone gave thanks to God? Is she a Christian? Maybe she’s just made at God at the moment. You be the judge. Poor‚ Taylor. NFL MVP Cam Newton appeared to be involved in a physical confrontation over the weekend and a 7-on-7 youth football camp. Some reports said that it appeared as though Newton was jumped by several men‚ although exact details about what happened at the event in Atlanta on Sunday are still not clear. Newton — who is 6’5”‚ 250 pounds — can be seen in the video manhandling most of the men during the altercation. USA Today said that Newton may have been “looking to break up a fight involving two or possibly three people before camp staffers and security officers stepped in to restore order.” The fight started off near a pop up tent and ended several yards away. Security officials stepped in to help break up the fight. It did not appear as though anyone was seriously hurt. Numerous House Democrats have signaled that they would not certify a 2024 presidential election win from Donald Trump‚ relying on the 14th Amendment to claim Trump is an insurrectionist and thus ineligible from holding office. Democrats including Reps. James Clyburn (SC)‚ Jamie Raskin (MD)‚ Adam Schiff (CA)‚ Eric Swalwell (CA)‚ and even House Minority Leader Hakeem Jefferies refused to say that they would confirm Trump to office if he won the 2024 election. As Dan McLaughlin explained at National Review‚ Democrats could have the votes to sustain an objection to a Trump win if they take control of the House. “Only a simple majority is required‚ and unlike when the House chooses a president under the Twelfth Amendment‚ they don’t vote by states‚” he wrote. “Unlike in 2016 or 2004‚ when they were in the minority‚ House Democrats could be playing with live ammunition.” Still‚ a majority of senators would have to object to a Trump win‚ too. This would likely take 51 senators‚ and as McLaughlin pointed out‚ this would be a tough task for Democrats: They “either have to hold every seat they currently occupy (good luck in West Virginia)‚ or take a Republican-held seat (the bluest of which is either Ted Cruz’s in Texas or Rick Scott’s in Florida)‚” he said. A potential way around some of this chaos rests at the Supreme Court‚ which heard oral arguments earlier this month in Trump v. Anderson‚ a case about whether or not a state‚ in this case Colorado‚ can keep Trump off the ballot based on the 14th Amendment. If the high court gives clarity on the issue of Trump eligibility‚ specifically that he is eligible‚ then Democrats would not have room to object on this basis. The arguments‚ so far‚ have bode well for Trump. Nearly every single justice‚ including the liberal ones‚ seemed exceedingly uncomfortable with siding with Colorado based on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Notably‚ that provision was enacted immediately following the Civil War in an effort to keep anyone who engaged in an “insurrection” from holding office. Attorney Jonathan Mitchell‚ who argued on behalf of Trump‚ argued that Section 3 doesn’t mention “president‚” but an “officer of the United States‚” which he says includes appointed officials‚ not elected officials. Another argument centered around Colorado adding a qualification to Trump by deeming him an insurrectionist and then disqualifying him before the election. Some of the strongest pushback to Colorado’s claims came from Justice Elena Kagan. “Why should a single state have the ability to make this determination not only for their own citizens but also for the nation?” she pressed the Colorado legal team. “It sounds awfully national to me … if you weren’t from Colorado‚ and you were from Wisconsin‚ or you were from Michigan‚ and what the Michigan secretary of state did is going to make the difference between whether candidate A is elected over Candidate  B is elected? Hundreds of thousands of Brazilians rallied on Sunday in the country’s biggest city to show support for former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro‚ who flew an Israeli flag in a rebuttal of anti-Semitic remarks made by the country’s current president‚ corrupt socialist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The rally comes as Brazil’s federal government investigates Bolsonaro over whether he was involved in orchestrating riots on government buildings last January‚ the Associated Press reported‚ adding that he’s also under investigation for allegedly receiving illegal gifts from Saudi Arabia during his presidency. Bolsonaro‚ who is barred from running for office until 2030‚ wants those who have been locked up from the riot to be pardoned and released from jail. “What I seek is pacification‚ it is erasing the past‚” he said. “It is to seek a way for us to live in peace and stop being so jumpy.
