Long-Awaited Articles of Impeachment Against DHS Secretary Mayorkas Arrive in Senate

The House delivered the two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate on Tuesday afternoon. The articles are expected to be acted on quickly by the Democrat-controlled Senate‚ but not in the manner House GOP lawmakers are seeking.   “We want to address this issue as expeditiously as possible‚” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer‚ D-N.Y.‚ said during a floor speech Monday discussing the articles of impeachment.   Republicans who backed the impeachment of Mayorkas are concerned that Schumer will hold a vote to dismiss the articles of impeachment altogether. Dismissal only requires a simple majority‚ which is not out of the question‚ given Democrats’ control of the upper chamber.   Schumer also has the option to refer the articles to committee‚ where they would likely die‚ or to hold a full Senate trial‚ which Schumer is not expected to do‚ given his own vocal opposition to Mayorkas’ impeachment.   “Impeachment should never be used to settle a policy disagreement‚” Schumer said‚ adding‚ “That would set a horrible precedent for the Congress.”   House and Senate Republicans supporting impeachment have maintained a pressure campaign on Schumer to force a Senate trial.   “Under the Constitution‚ the responsibility of the Senate is simple and straightforward: The Senate must hold a trial‚” said Sen. Ted Cruz‚ R-Texas.   “Chuck Schumer doesn’t want to do that‚” Cruz added. “Instead‚ he wants to move to table the entire thing for three reasons. First‚ he does not want to allow the House managers to present evidence of Mayorkas’ willful decision to aid and abet the criminal invasion of this country. Second‚ he does not want the American people to see the facts. Third‚ he does not want Senate Democrats on the ballot in November to have to vote ‘not guilty’ because the evidence is indisputable—Alejandro Mayorkas is guilty.”   Rep. Mark Green‚ R-Tenn.‚ serves as chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee and led the impeachment effort against Mayorkas.   “The American people demand accountability‚” Green wrote on X‚ in response to House Speaker Mike Johnson signing the articles of impeachment Monday.   Tomorrow I’m joining @SpeakerJohnson to deliver the articles of impeachment to the Senate. The American people demand accountability. https://t.co/PLkTs9yOyL— Rep. Mark Green (@RepMarkGreen) April 15‚ 2024 The Republican-controlled House voted 214 to 213 on a party-line vote to impeach Mayorkas on Feb. 13 after a failed attempt a week prior.   The House’s first article alleges that the homeland security secretary has failed to secure America’s border and enforce immigration laws‚ and instead has executed policies that incentivize illegal immigration.     The House’s second article of impeachment contends that Mayorkas is in breach of the public trust and knowingly has made false statements to Congress and the American people.  Like his conservative colleagues in the House‚ Cruz says Mayorkas bears much of the responsibility for the record high number of encounters of illegal aliens at America’s borders.   “Mayorkas has aided and abetted the criminal invasion of the United States‚” Cruz said. “This is a humanitarian‚ public safety‚ and national security crisis.”   Schumer told his fellow senators in a “Dear Colleague” letter on April 5 that when the articles of impeachment arrive in the Senate‚ senators will be sworn in as jurors the following day and that Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray‚ D-Wash.‚ will preside over the chamber.   The House was originally going to deliver the two articles of impeachment to the Senate on April 10‚ but Johnson delayed the delivery after a group of GOP senators asked him to do so to allow more time for debate on the Senate floor before the weekend. Schumer said Monday that his plan of action in the Senate has not changed despite the arrival of the articles being delayed six days.   The post Long-Awaited Articles of Impeachment Against DHS Secretary Mayorkas Arrive in Senate appeared first on The Daily Signal.

DC Mayor Mum on Motorbikes on City Streets Without License Plates

The mayor’s office in Washington‚ D.C.‚ has remained silent on widespread license-plate violations in the city following a Daily Signal investigation of the phenomenon of unlicensed drivers. Men and women alike—many of them in the country illegally—are driving motorized bikes around the District of Columbia without license plates. Some of the riders of the motorcycles and other motor-driven cycles are using the bikes for food delivery in the city.   The Daily Signal sought comment from the Metropolitan Police Department during an initial investigation into the illegal operation of the bikes in the city‚ and police said those riding motor-driven cycles without a license plate are “testing their luck.”  The Daily Signal then reached out to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser by email and phone to find out whether the mayor was aware of the situation and working with local law enforcement to enforce the city’s license-plate laws‚ but did not receive a response.   Because the Biden administration is not enforcing immigration laws at the border and is instead allowing illegal aliens to remain in the U.S.‚ that “passes the buck to the states and cities‚ who have to deal with the federal government’s failure‚” Simon Hankinson‚ a senior research fellow in The Heritage Foundation’s Border Security and Immigration Center‚ told The Daily Signal. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) “Nonetheless‚ public safety is job No. 1 for any elected official‚” Hankinson added. “Letting unscrupulous motorcycle vendors and their unlicensed‚ uninsured‚ illegally present riders off the hook will only encourage more lawbreaking.”  The Daily Signal became aware of an increased number of motor-driven cycles without license plates operating in the District. If operating a motorized bike in the District at speeds above 20 mph‚ not only does that vehicle require registration‚ the driver is required to “have on his or her possession a valid [driver’s] license” and insurance‚ per the city’s Department of Motor Vehicles.     D.C. law requires that a motorcycle or a motor-driven cycle—a motor vehicle that has a gas‚ electric‚ or hybrid motor no larger than 50 cubic centimeters (cc) and cannot go above 30 mph—be registered with the District’s DMV within 30 days of purchase and display a license plate on the back of the two- or three-wheeled vehicle.   The Daily Signal launched an investigation to determine whether the drivers of these motor bikes have the legal requirements to operate them‚ and whether D.C. police are striving to eliminate the operation of vehicles that are not registered in the city.   After speaking to about 10 drivers‚ a retailer at a motor-driven cycles shop‚ and the Metropolitan Police Department‚ The Daily Signal determined that illegal aliens are acquiring motorized bikes through a number of sources and that D.C. police do not appear to be enforcing registration laws. EU Officials Dodge Their Own Surveillance Law

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Do as I say – not as I do. That’s the essence of a leak that claims to expose high-ranked EU officials as more than simply politicking hypocrites when it comes to implementing the extremely controversial legislation affecting online privacy and encryption. Namely‚ interior ministers from EU member countries reportedly want to exempt themselves – but not only – from the looming Child Sexual Abuse (CSAM) Regulation (aka‚ “chat control“)‚ expected to be adopted as early as in June. Pushed by supporters as being exactly what it says on the tin – the proposed new rules are at the same time criticized as a vehicle for indiscriminate mass surveillance of everyone’s online communications‚ and a way to weaken true encryption deployed by platforms – a vital component of internet security‚ once again‚ affecting everyone who goes online‚ children included. German member of European Parliament (MEP)‚ Pirate Party member‚ and lawyer Patrick Breyer‚ who has been investing a lot of time and energy in drawing EU public’s attention to the dangers that come with the regulation‚ is now quoting leaked documents published by the French site Contexte‚ which may or may not prove the context of the already troubled proposed rules‚ just got even worse. That’s because‚ according to Contexte‚ “EU interior ministers want to exempt professional accounts of staff of intelligence agencies‚ police and military from the envisaged scanning of chats and messages.” In addition to ministers‚ police‚ and spies‚ anything that’s labeled as “professional secret” is also supposed to be exempt from this highly invasive (when it comes to everybody else in the EU) type of content scanning. In a statement‚ Breyer’s take on the revelations is that these officials are well aware that chat control scans are “unreliable and dangerous snooping algorithms” – and yet have no problem “unleashing (them) on us‚ citizens.” Regarding the “professional secrets” provision – Breyer calls it “a lie cast in paragraphs.” “No provider and no algorithm can know or determine whether a chat is being conducted with doctors‚ therapists‚ lawyers‚ defense lawyers‚ etc. so as to exempt it from chat control‚” he writes. And he seems to think that what might be behind these exemptions is the EU interior ministers worried that military secrets with no connection to CSAM would become “readily available” to the US – likely‚ because of the broad and “leaky” nature of the regulation itself and the amount of data it hopes to access. According to Breyer‚ this provision exempting various officials and their communication “makes a mockery” of the stated purpose of the legislation‚ i.e.‚ protecting children online‚ while the EU‚ instead of looking into best ways to actually achieve that‚ is descending into “China-style mass surveillance‚ and not better protecting our children.” “We know that most of the chats leaked by today’s voluntary snooping algorithms are of no relevance to the police‚ for example family photos or consensual sexting‚” the MEP says. “It is outrageous that the EU interior ministers themselves do not want to suffer the consequences of the destruction of digital privacy of correspondence and secure encryption that they are imposing on us‚” Breyer concludes. Hostin Fears Trump Voter Will ‘Sneak’ onto Jury By Saying ‘I Hate Trump’

On Tuesday’s edition of The View‚ ABC’s staunchly racist and anti-Semitic co-host‚ Sunny Hostin (the descendant of slave owners) proved once again why she’s a former federal prosecutor. Speaking about the upcoming hush-money trial against former President Trump‚ Hostin proclaimed that she feared the impartial jury would be infiltrated by a Trump supporter who would “lie” by telling the court the contradictory statement: “I hate Trump. But I can be impartial.” Hostin admitted she was “excited” for the trial‚ calling it “a legal nerd's Super Bowl.” When faux conservative Alyssa Farah Griffin noted “They haven’t even picked a juror‚” Hostin boasted about the jurors who said they couldn’t be impartial: “But that's exciting to someone like me because 50 people said ‘I can't even be impartial‚’ which I admire them for their forthrightness and their honesty because you have to be honest when you're a juror.” But while claiming she “still believe[d] they will be able to find an impartial jury‚” Hostin contradicted herself by adding: “They’re never going to find that.” She then went on to hype how the legal teams were going to comb through the social media accounts of prospective jurors for signs they support Trump: They are never going to find someone that doesn't know about the former twice-impeached loser president. Right&;#63; They're never going to find that. But what I did find also interesting about my Super Bowl that the legal teams will be checking the jurors’ social media profiles to see if they can access the truthfulness and intention of what they said during voir dire‚ which is their questioning.     “And I think that’s really‚ really important because‚ if you start liking Trump‚ you follow Trump stuff on social media‚ are you going to -- can you be impartial&;#63; I don't think so‚” she declared without a consideration to keeping Trump haters off of the jury. In fact‚ her fear was that a Trump supporter would “sneak onto that jury” by lying about hating Trump: HOSTIN: You get one person that sneaks onto that jury with untoward feelings‚ that person can hang that jury. BEHAR: How do you sneak onto a jury&;#63; You have to be called to a jury. HOSTIN: Well‚ you lie. You lie. You say‚ “I hate Trump. But I can be impartial. And I this and that.” BEHAR: I see. HOSTIN: And then‚ all of a sudden‚ that’s the person who won’t vote to convict. While she’s worried someone biased in Trump’s favor would be allowed on the jury‚ she was blinded by her unhinged hatred for him to think a prospective juror announcing “I hate Trump” was the impartial position. “Where are they going to find a jury of his peers‚ how many bloated orange psychos are out there&;#63;” so-called comedian Joy Behar quipped. “Yeah. It’s going to be tough‚” Hostin agreed. The transcript is below. Click &;quot;expand&;quot; to read: ABC’s The View April 16‚ 2024 11:04:40 a.m. Eastern (…) JOY BEHAR: Oh‚ it’s just beginning. SUNNY HOSTIN: I'm not trumped out at all. SARA HAINES: I’m so Trumped out. HOSTIN: This is a legal nerd's Super Bowl. Right&;#63; Like‚ I'm kind of excited about this. ALYSSA FARAH GRIFFIN: They haven’t even picked a juror. HOSTIN: But that's exciting to someone like me because 50 people said “I can't even be impartial‚” which I admire them for their forthrightness and their honesty because you have to be honest when you're a juror. But I still believe they will be able to find an impartial jury. They are never going to find someone that doesn't know about the former twice impeached loser president. Right&;#63; BEHAR: Yeah. HOSTIN: They're never going to find that. But what I did find also interesting about my Super Bowl that the legal teams will be checking the jurors’ social media profiles to see if they can access the truthfulness and intention of what they said during voir dire‚ which is their questioning. And I think that’s really‚ really important because‚ if you start liking Trump‚ you follow Trump stuff on social media‚ are you going to -- can you be impartial&;#63; I don't think so. And I think what could happen in a case like this‚ if you have someone – and we were talking about it this morning‚ someone named Clay Travis sort of telling people to get onto that jury. You get one person that sneaks onto that jury with untoward feelings‚ that person can hang that jury. BEHAR: How do you sneak onto a jury&;#63; You have to be called to a jury. HOSTIN: Well‚ you lie. You lie. You say‚ “I hate Trump. But I can be impartial. And I this and that” BEHAR: I see. HOSTIN: And then‚ all of a sudden‚ that’s the person who won’t vote to convict. BEHAR: Where are they going to find a jury of his peers‚ how many bloated orange psychos are out there&;#63; HOSTIN: Yeah. It’s going to be tough. (…)
