UAW president faces probe over alleged retaliation, obstruction of federal investigation

United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain is under investigation for alleged retaliation against other union leaders, according to a Monday court filing, Reuters reported. The union's secretary-treasurer, Margaret Mock, was reportedly stripped of her duties for allegedly "engag[ing] in misconduct while carrying out her financial oversight responsibilities." However, Mock claimed the accusations were false and instead insisted that Fain retaliated against her because she was reluctant to authorize "certain expenditures" from Fain's office, the filing revealed.'Sometimes you have to rock the boat.'Fain also accused Rich Boyer, the leader of the union's Stellantis department, of "dereliction of duty" regarding a collective bargaining issue. The court filing indicated that Fain was again accused of retaliation for stripping Boyer's duties.Independent federal monitor Neil Barofsky opened an investigation into the allegations against Fain, Mock, and Boyer.Barofsky claimed that Fain and other union leaders have obstructed the ongoing investigation, citing a "lapse in cooperation" after the UAW failed to produce requested documents in a timely manner. The court filing showed that the union handed over 2,600 of the estimated 116,000 relevant documents.Fain encouraged the monitor "to investigate whatever claims are brought to their office, because we know what they'll find: a UAW leadership committed to serving the membership, and running a democratic union.""Taking our union in a new direction means sometimes you have to rock the boat, and that upsets some people who want to keep the status quo," Fain remarked. The Department of Justice claimed that the union is "making it difficult, if not impossible, for the Monitor to fulfill his mandate to remove fraud, corruption and illegality from within the UAW."Barofsky was appointed federal monitor in 2021 after DOJ investigations resulted in the convictions of several former union leaders on corruption charges. The UAW declined to comment, Reuters reported.Earlier this year, the UAW endorsed President Joe Biden for re-election. The union also backed the administration's "strongest-ever" vehicle emission standards and rejected claims that the restrictions would slash union jobs. "We reject the fearmongering that says tackling the climate crisis must come at the cost of union jobs. Ambitious and achievable regulations can support both. We call on the Biden Administration to hold automakers accountable so that this rule is not used as an excuse to cut or offshore jobs," the UAW stated in March.Despite the union's claims, Stellantis announced last year that it was planning layoffs partly due to "the need to manage sales of the vehicles they produce to comply with California emissions regulations that are measured on a state-by-state basis."Like Blaze News? Activist health sciences instructor fired from DePaul after offering optional 'genocide in Gaza' assignment

An adjunct faculty member at DePaul University — a private, Catholic institution in Chicago — has been fired after she offered students an optional assignment regarding the war in Gaza.Last spring, Anne d’Aquino taught a 100-level health sciences course at DePaul that focuses on pathogens, the spread of infectious disease among human populations, and the means of combating them.'My termination was ... another example of this administration's efforts to twist any discussions of Palestine and Palestinian liberation language into false claims of antisemitism.'On May 7, the tail end of the semester, d'Aquino sent her students an email offering them an optional assignment about the "genocide in Gaza" following the Israeli bombing in Rafah. In the assignment, students were to explain "the impact of genocide/ethnic cleansing on the health/biology of the people it impacts." She also invited students to comment on "resisting the normalization of ethnic cleansing."The following day, d'Aquino received an email from Health Sciences chair Sarah Connolly, informing her that she had been terminated from her position as an adjunct instructor effective immediately. Connolly then took over the course for the remainder of the semester. As an adjunct instructor, d'Aquino was entitled to due process only after she was terminated. So, she filed an appeal a week later, arguing that the Gaza assignment was not off-topic since the course was established as a result of COVID-19 and the attending so-called public health crisis."The assignment was, in fact, related to the course and its objectives," she claimed. "For months, scientists and physicians have been warning about the spread of infectious disease in Gaza due to starvation, malnutrition, overcrowding, destruction of critical water and sanitation infrastructure, lack of access to sanitation items, and health care collapse."On Thursday, d'Aquino also organized a small rally to support her appeal. "My termination was a breach of my academic freedom," she said, "and another example of this administration's efforts to twist any discussions of Palestine and Palestinian liberation language into false claims of antisemitism."About 50 attendees waved pro-Palestinian signs as she spoke and then paraded about with a 24-page petition containing about 1,500 signatures of students demanding her reinstatement. They then delivered the petition to Connolly's office, but Connolly was not there. The following day, DePaul issued a statement regarding d'Aquino's dismissal: "We investigated the matter, spoke with the faculty member, and found [the assignment] had negatively affected the learning environment by introducing extraneous political material that was outside the scope of the academic subject as outlined in the curriculum."The school also claimed that some students "expressed significant concern" that such a politically charged assignment had been injected into a health sciences course about microorganisms. The school did acknowledge that the appeals process is "currently underway" in d'Aquino's case and that it "will be completed soon."Like Blaze News? Dr. Phil asks Trump about his plan for revenge, and his answer is STUNNING

A few days ago, Dr. Phil sat down with Donald Trump for a lengthy interview that’s since gone viral. While there were several important moments in their conversation, Dave Rubin is particularly interested in the segment where Dr. Phil broached the subject of revenge with the former president. Many would argue that Trump, who is often viewed as a political prisoner, is justified in seeking revenge on those who have made him the most targeted man in our nation’s history. But is this what’s best for America? According to Trump, no. “Sometimes revenge can be justified,” he told Dr. Phil. “Maybe we have revenge through success ... I want to see the country survive.” Dave is just as impressed as Dr. Phil with Trump's humble answer. “That’s Trump at his best,” says Dave, adding that the left-owned media is trying to convince the nation that Trump will seek revenge by imprisoning his assailants and reframing the branches of government. But the truth is, “the best revenge for Donald Trump ... would be the success of America” — a sentiment that’s in stark contrast to one that would be made by the tyrant Democrats paint Trump to be. To hear more of the interview and Dave’s commentary, watch the clip below. 6 new iMessage features in iOS 18 that make RCS support an afterthought

I thought Apple would announce RCS support coming to the Messages app during the iOS 18 segment of the WWDC 2024 keynote, and I was right. Apple said a few months ago that RCS — the carrier standard, not Google's version — was coming to the iPhone by the end of the year. iOS 18 seemed like the best way to do it. Regulatory pressure on Apple from various jurisdictions probably was the deciding factor in Apple's decision to finally support RCS. It's also a good way to stop everyone from attacking iMessage over the color of the bubbles. But Apple treated RCS functionality as an afterthought during the keynote, in its press announcement, and on the iOS 18 preview page on its website. That's hardly surprising considering the variety of new features coming to iMessage in iOS 18, features that might make Android users envious. Continue reading...
