90-Year-Old Twins Reunite After 81 Years Apart

At the age of 90‚ Maurilia Chavez and Andrea Lopez‚ orphaned twins who hadn’t seen each other since they were nine‚ finally reunited‚ all thanks to DNA technology. Their lives took a heartbreaking turn in 1937 when their parents passed away‚ leaving them and their eight siblings to be scattered among various extended family members. Despite their bond as twins‚ fate cruelly separated them‚ placing them in different homes hundreds of miles apart‚ with their only brief encounter occurring four years later when they were reunited for just one day during a family gathering. Maurilia Chavez and Andrea Lopez reunited 81 years later Youtube video screenshot For years‚ Chavez and Lopez led separate lives‚ completely unaware of each other’s presence‚ embracing milestones like marriage‚ parenthood‚ and retirement in different corners of the country. Yet‚ the ache of uncertainty lingered‚ haunting them with doubts about the existence and well-being of their long-lost twin. RELATED: Rarely Seen Olsen Twins From ‘Full House’ Spotted During Sisterly Outing A twist of fate occurred during the Thanksgiving period last year when Lopez‚ residing in Las Vegas‚ decided to delve into her genetic ancestry‚ revealing that her sister was alive and living in Denver. Without delay‚ they reconnected through an extensive phone conversation‚ bridging the chasm of decades apart. Fuelled by the desire to embrace their reunion‚ Lopez hastily secured a flight for a heartwarming rendezvous with Chavez in December. Youtube video screenshot During the reunion‚ the long-lost twins were joyful as they embraced each other for the first time. Lopez described the meeting as a very emotional one. “My little sister‚ I really wanted to see you‚ to have you with me‚ my beautiful little sister‚” she said in Spanish. “When I see my sister‚ I get so happy‚ I don’t do nothing but cry and hug her and squish her‚ It was like the first time I see her in my life because 81 years is too long. I remember just a little bit‚ a little‚ little bit‚ me too.” Youtube video screenshot Chavez also expressed a mix of emotions‚ as she expressed both enthusiasm and anticipation about reuniting with her twin after a considerable period of time apart. “I am more happiest person in the world because I never thought I was going to see her again and the other reason‚” she confessed. “I cry like a baby‚ I was lonely I have a beautiful family but what I really need was my sister.” Click for next Article The post 90-Year-Old Twins Reunite After 81 Years Apart appeared first on DoYouRemember? - The Home of Nostalgia. Mayorkas Personally Denied RFK Jr.’s Secret Service Protection

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas personally declined a request from presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for Secret Service protection last July. The newly revealed records were obtained by Judicial Watch‚ which sued the Department of Homeland Secretary in September over an unanswered Freedom of Information Act request. On July 21‚ 2023‚ Mayorkas sent the following two-sentence letter to Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle: On May 26‚ 2023‚ Candidate for President Robert F. Kennedy‚ Jr. submitted a request to the Department of Homeland Security for United States Secret Service protection. In accordance with the authority set forth in Title 18‚ United States Code‚ Section 3056(a)(7)‚ and in consultation with the Candidate Protection Advisory Committee‚ I decline to identify Candidate Kennedy for United States Secret Service protection at this time. Presidential candidates are eligible for Secret Service protection at the discretion of the homeland security secretary and a committee of congressional leaders. President Joe Biden also has authority to approve requests. In his July 21 rejection letter‚ Mayorkas copied members of the Candidate Protection Advisory Committee: Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer‚ Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell‚ then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy‚ House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries‚ and Senate Sergeant at Arms Karen Gibson. Judicial Watch released the documents hours before the House of Representatives impeached Mayorkas for his failure to enforce immigration laws and lying to Congress. He now faces a Senate trial. BREAKING FROM @JUDICIALWATCH: DHS Secretary Mayorkas Personally Declined Presidential Candidate @RobertKennedyJr Request for Secret Service Protection – https://t.co/c2BbLGhz7Q pic.twitter.com/AMGhTrqqjR— Tom Fitton (@TomFitton) February 14‚ 2024 Kennedy‚ who entered the presidential race as a Democrat before switching to independent‚ has cited threats to his personal safety to justify his three requests for Secret Service help. “I get a lot of threats‚ a lot of death threats‚” Kennedy told Tucker Carlson in August. “About two weeks ago‚ a mentally ill person made it to the second story at my house. And that is very‚ very common.” According to Kennedy’s campaign‚ the intruder who entered the candidate’s Los Angeles home had written hundreds of emails shared with the Department of Homeland Security‚ including one threatening to put a “bullet in [Mr. Kennedy’s] brain.” An earlier incident took place at a campaign event when a man showed up with loaded weapons and dressed like a U.S. marshal. Kennedy’s private security apprehended both individuals. Kennedy’s campaign made repeated requests for Secret Service protection last year‚ according to the documents obtained by Judicial Watch. The first request came on May 26‚ 2023‚ accompanied by a 62-page “expert risk assessment.” Kennedy’s team followed up on July 7‚ 2023‚ with an “urgent request” for Mayorkas‚ only to be denied two weeks later. The Secret Service began offering protection to presidential candidates after the assassination of Kennedy’s father in 1968. Speaking to Carlson in August‚ Kennedy recounted an assortment of presidential candidates who were granted protection. They include Kennedy’s late uncle‚ Edward Kennedy‚ who was given Secret Service protection in 1980 even though he was challenging President Jimmy Carter‚ a fellow Democrat. In May 2007‚ after receiving a death threat‚ then-Sen. Barack Obama was given protection 18 months before the presidential election. “We were not able to find a single presidential candidate who requested a protection from the president and was not given protection‚” Kennedy told Carlson. “It’s just standard operating procedure.” Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley last week requested Secret Service protection. I sure hope they care about Nikki Haley’s safety more than mine. I’ve requested three times — still denied. Good luck Nikki! https://t.co/w7MRPn0Onv— Robert F. Kennedy Jr (@RobertKennedyJr) February 6‚ 2024 In 2023 when he made the requests‚ Kennedy was polling around 20%. He still boasts the highest favorability rating of any presidential candidate—and the only candidate whose numbers are more favorable than unfavorable‚ according to 538. Kennedy said the Secret Service were “wonderful” when his campaign first made the request. “They were very‚ very encouraging‚ and they were very helpful at every step along the way‚” he told Carlson. “I believe that their assumption was that they were going to get Secret Service protection.” Last week‚ Judicial Watch revealed other documents related to Kennedy’s request‚ including an order from Secret Service Assistant Director Michael Plati instructing his staff not to respond to a request from Kennedy’s head of security. Kennedy surmised the Democratic National Committee was responsible for “playing hardball‚” requiring him to spend upwards of $200‚000 per month on security rather than other campaign needs. He is now asking supporters to sign a petition. The post Mayorkas Personally Denied RFK Jr.’s Secret Service Protection appeared first on The Daily Signal.

“Dracula's Chivito” Is This Year's Best Name For A Newly Found Astronomical Object

Astronomers have discovered a very young and unusual-looking star – and named it Dracula’s Chivito‚ after a popular Uruguayan sandwich. The name is a nod to the most similar object we’ve seen before‚ the equally memorable Gomez’ Hamburger.Stars can last for billions of years‚ but are most interesting in the relatively brief times when they are being born and dying‚ partly because there seems to be more diversity in those stages than in midlife. One particularly valued example is IRAS 18059-3211‚ discovered in 1985 from photos by Arturo Gómez. It’s been named Gomez’s Hamburger‚ or GoHam‚ because it looks like meat in a bun.GoHam is interesting because we’re seeing it during the period when the surrounding disk has yet to condense into planets‚ as well as unusually edge on. At 800 light years away‚ it’s hardly close (although some estimates are higher)‚ but certainly more convenient for study than most of the galaxy. Intriguingly‚ it’s not in a region forming other stars‚ unlike the vast majority of stellar newborns that tend to be closely clumped. It's taken 39 years from GoHam’s discovery for us to find a counterpart‚ but now we have an exceptionally close match. In the intervening time‚ the authors of a preprint paper announcing it note there has been recognition that these edge-on disks may help us answer questions raised by those we can see from other angles.“The shadows cast by the midplane concentration of dust and gas in highly inclined disks allow direct observations of scattered light from the central star‚ unveiling the vertical distribution of dust particles‚ providing information about their sizes‚ compositions‚ and settling mechanisms‚” they note. The team was not looking for GoHam’s siblings when they made their discovery‚ searching instead for galaxies that might have black holes feeding on infalling material. In the process‚ they came upon an object whose disk they say; “Has the characteristic bipolar appearance of edge-on disks with the central star being completely obscured.” Previous observations had been taken at radio wavelengths and hadn’t revealed how interesting it was.  Follow-up studies on GoHam revealed an estimated mass 2.5 times larger than the Sun. The mass of the disk is thought to be 0.03 solar masses‚ which sounds small until you realize that’s 20 times greater than every planet‚ asteroid‚ and comet in the Solar System combined. There are some signs a planet is already forming.A Hubble image of Gomez's Hamburger‚ starting off the meat-bun named class of side on starsImage Credit: NASA/processed by Jud Schmidt CC by 2.0Astronomers like to give similar objects thematically similar names – thus Mothra for the star that resembles one called Godzilla – so the new discovery called for something related to Gomez’s Hamburger. Noting what look like fangs extending from the northern side‚ the discoverers thought a reference to Dracula was appropriate. Co-author Dr Ana Mosquera is originally Uruguayan and the team adopted her suggestion to name it after her country’s national dish‚ a bun filled with beefsteak‚ cheese‚ ham‚ and various vegetables. "Denser clumps collapse under gravity until fusion starts‚" lead author Dr Ciprian Berghea of the US Naval Observatory told IFLScience. "The newborn star is in the so-called 'pre-main sequence' and is still surrounded by a dense disk of gas and dust and by an envelope‚ which is what is left of the cloud clump. If the envelope is very faint you can only see the brighter 'edges' of the envelope‚ the 'fangs'. You could probably see more of the envelope with better observations." To that end‚ the team is trying to get the Hubble or JWST to spend time on DraChi.The announcement includes reference to other objects described as similar to the pair – but all are much smaller‚ either because of intrinsic size or greater distance‚ and therefore harder to study. Dracula’s Chivito or DraChi‚ appears 50 percent larger than GoHam‚ despite probably lying at a similar distance. The central star is suspected of being more than a third hotter than the Sun‚ while the mass of its disk is also thought to be a little lower than GoHam’s.The paper has been submitted to the Astrophysical Journal Letters‚ and a preprint can be found on ArXiv.org.[H/T ScienceAlert]

Scientists have discovered a “giant megastructure” under the Baltic Sea

A remarkable discovery has been made in the Baltic Sea: a huge structure that could be the oldest Stone Age megastructure built by humans in Europe. This blog post will tell you everything you need to know about this amazing find and what it reveals about the ancient people who lived there. The structure‚ which has been named the Blinkerwall‚ is located 21 meters below the water surface in the Bay of Mecklenburg. It is composed of 1‚673 individual stones that form a wall measuring around 1km in length. The stones are not randomly placed‚ but arranged in a deliberate pattern that suggests a human-made origin. The Blinkerwall dates back to 10‚000 years ago‚ when the area was part of a vast landmass called Doggerland that connected Britain and continental Europe. Doggerland was inhabited by hunter-gatherers who exploited the rich resources of the land and sea. However‚ around 8‚200 years ago‚ Doggerland was submerged by rising sea levels caused by melting glaciers. So why did these ancient people build such a massive structure? According to archaeologists‚ the Blinkerwall was likely used as a hunting device to trap and kill reindeer. Reindeer were an important source of food‚ clothing and tools for the hunter-gatherers‚ and they migrated across Doggerland in large herds. The idea behind the Blinkerwall was to create an artificial bottleneck that would funnel the reindeer into a dead end‚ where they could be easily slaughtered. The wall would act as a barrier that the animals would not try to jump over or go around. “When you chase the animals‚ they follow these structures‚ they don’t attempt to jump over them‚” said Jacob Geersen of the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research. The archaeologists believe that there was a second wall or a lake shore that closed off the other end of the bottleneck‚ but they have not found it yet. It may still be hidden under the sediment or eroded by the waves. However‚ they are confident that the Blinkerwall is not a natural formation‚ but a product of human ingenuity and engineering. “This puts the Blinkerwall into range of the oldest known examples of hunting architecture in the world and potentially makes it the oldest man-made megastructure in Europe‚” they wrote in their paper published in the journal Antiquity. The Blinkerwall is a great example of how much history lies beneath the waves‚ waiting to be uncovered and explored.
