This free app claims to use AI to tell if someone is lying

What if an app on your smartphone could verify that someone is telling you the truth? That seems to be the idea behind an AI lie detector called VerifEye‚ which has been making the rounds for at least the past year. The app was created by Converus‚ and the company claims it can detect lies with up to 80 percent accuracy. The app recently appeared in some Reddit threats on an AI-focused subreddit‚ and while Converus never explicitly claims AI powers the app‚ it's very clear that it uses some type of AI to detect the behavior of your eye‚ which is what VerifEye focuses on to determine if you're telling the truth or not. The AI lie detector looks for movements within your eyes to try to determine whether or not you are being truthful. Converus never explicitly says what kind of behavior it is looking for; it can detect it simply by pointing your smartphone's camera at your eyes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNZrlkjxaLc The idea that the eyes can tell if you're lying isn't a new one. It's actually been around since the 1970s in some way or another‚ though one of the most common theories about eye movement was actually disproven in 2012. Still‚ the eyes and their behavior remain key indicators that you can use (alongside other indicators) to tell if someone is lying. You can see an infomercial about how VerifEye is supposed to work in the video I've embedded above. What's most interesting to me is how the company advertises this app‚ as if it's something we're all just going to be using in our daily lives. It isn't just advertised as an AI lie detector for corporations. The company also mentions using it to determine if someone's online persona is real or even if someone has been unfaithful. Of course‚ the claims of 80 percent accuracy aren't likely to be anything that is admissible in court‚ especially with the E.U.'s recent AI Act changing up a lot of things. This app might even be considered illegal in some places because of the implications behind it. Still‚ it isn't surprising to see a company taking this stance‚ though I do have some doubts about how useful the app claims it could be. Those doubts and questions haven't stopped others from jumping at the very hint of an oppressive future where AI is constantly watching our every move. Of course‚ all of that is only compounded by the fact that AI knows how to deceive humans. ChatGPT no longer requires you to create an account

Generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Copilot are all of the rage now‚ but using most of them requires you to create an account or log in with whomever owns the bot. It seems that OpenAI's next move is to remove that hurdle to bring AI to even more people. In a blog post‚ the company announced that users will no longer be required to create an account or log in to use the generative AI chatbot. OpenAI says‚ "We're rolling this out gradually‚ with the aim to make AI accessible to anyone curious about its capabilities‚" so don't expect to see this change right away as it's currently unclear what "gradually" actually means in terms of timeline. Continue reading... The post ChatGPT no longer requires you to create an account appeared first on BGR. Don’t buy an Android phone before the Nothing Phone 3 comes out

This has already been a great year for mid-range Android phones‚ and it's only been three months. The Nothing Phone 2a is an incredible choice if you're shopping for one of the most affordable new Android mid-rangers on the market. Then there's the Galaxy A55‚ which could pass for a Galaxy S24 and packs several exciting features for an A-series model. Google's Pixel 8a is also coming out in mid-May‚ and I think it will be the phone for Apple to beat with the iPhone SE 4 when it launches next year. These are amazing options‚ and I'm not even listing the first Android flagships of the year‚ which are even better. These include the Galaxy S24‚ the Xiaomi 14 models‚ and the Honor Magic 6 Pro. The last two are not available in the US‚ however. The Galaxy A55 isn't available in the US either; that's how good it is. Samsung doesn't want you to get the A55 instead of the Galaxy S24. Despite all of that‚ I'm about to tell you not to purchase any new Android phone‚ affordable mid-range or expensive flagship‚ until the Nothing Phone 3 comes out. I know‚ I know‚ waiting for the next best thing will get you in a toxic loop where you'll keep waiting for something better. But the Nothing Phone 3 might be worth waiting for. Continue reading... Construction on the first EV charging highway will start this month

Purdue University and the Indiana Department of Transportation are coming together for quite the partnership. The two groups will band together to create the first EV charging highway‚ and construction on a test segment will start this month. According to the news post shared on Purdue University's website‚ the highway testbed will be built on U.S. Highway 231/U.S. Highway 52 in West Lafayette. The team will test how well a patent-pending system can provide power to heavy-duty electric trucks traveling at highway speeds. The goal here is to create a baseline for EV-charging highways that can be used to upgrade other highways around the country. This would then allow electric vehicles ranging in size from Teslas to full-blown semi-trucks to recharge as they drive‚ cutting down the need for recharging stops and concerns over a lack of EV infrastructure throughout the country. Image source: Tesla Construction on the test bed begins on April 1‚ but the actual testing of the components won't come until next year‚ most likely. A few other states have also started testing roads that can wirelessly charge EVs‚ but this will be the first EV-charging highway. The engineers at Purdue say it's a unique challenge‚ especially since it needs to be able to charge heavy-duty trucks‚ too. The engineers are focusing on heavy-duty trucks because of the possible improvements they could bring to the greenhouse gas emissions created by heavy-duty trucks. With EV charging highways throughout the nation‚ we could rely on smaller batteries in heavy-duty trucks‚ making them more affordable to build and thus making them more affordable for companies that want to adopt them. While it'll still be a while before we see just how well something like this works‚ it is a great thing to see coming together. Hopefully‚ the engineers at Purdue have come up with a solid game plan‚ and construction will go off without much of a hitch.
