To a nation of snowflakes‚ Christmas has become yet another trigger word. When I was a child in the 1950s‚ the magic of Christmas was promoted in the schools. We sang Christmas carols in the classroom. There were cutouts of the Nativity scene on the bulletin board‚ along with the smiling‚ chubby face of Santa and Rudolph. We were all acutely aware that Christmas was magic. Fast forward to the present day‚ and Christmas has become fodder for the politically correct culture wars. Over the years‚ Christmas casualties in the campaign to create one large national safe space have ranged from the beloved animated classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (denounced for promoting bullying and homophobia) to the Oscar-winning tune “Baby‚ It’s Cold Outside” (accused of being a date rape anthem) crooned by everyone from Dean Martin to Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel in the movie Elf. Also on the endangered species Christmas list are such songs as “Deck the Halls‚” “Santa Baby‚” and “White Christmas.” One publishing company even re-issued their own redacted version of Clement Clarke Moore’s famous poem “Twas the night before Christmas” in order to be more health conscious: the company edited out Moore’s mention of Santa smoking a pipe (“The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth‚ / And the smoke‚ it encircled his head like a wreath.”) In the politically correct quest to avoid causing offense‚ Christmas keeps getting axed. Examples abound. Schools across the country now avoid anything that alludes to the true meaning of Christmas such as angels‚ the baby Jesus‚ stables and shepherds. In many of the nation’s schools‚ Christmas carols‚ Christmas trees‚ wreaths and candy canes have also been banned as part of the effort to avoid any reference to Christmas‚ Christ or God. One school even outlawed the colors red and green‚ saying they were Christmas colors and‚ thus‚ illegal. Students asked to send seasonal cards to military troops have been told to make them “holiday cards” and instructed not to use the words “Merry Christmas” on their cards. Many schools have redubbed their Christmas concerts as “winter holiday programs” and refer to Christmas as a “winter festival.” Some schools have cancelled holiday celebrations altogether to avoid offending those who do not celebrate the various holidays. In Minnesota‚ a charter school banned the display of a poster prepared to promote the school’s yearbook as a holiday gift because the poster included Jack Skellington from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and other secular Christmas icons‚ not to mention the word “Christmas.” In New Jersey‚ one school district banned traditional Christmas songs such as “Joy to the World” and “Silent Night” from its holiday concerts.  A New Jersey middle school cancelled a field trip to attend a performance of a play based on Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol” because some might have found it “offensive.” In Texas‚ a teacher in Texas who decorated her door with a scene from “A Charlie Brown Christmas‚” including a scrawny tree and Linus‚ was forced to take it down lest students be offended or feel uncomfortable. In Connecticut‚ teachers were instructed to change the wording of the classic poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” to “Twas the Night Before a Holiday.” In Virginia‚ a high school principal debated about whether he could mention Santa or distribute candy canes given that they were symbols of Christmas. In Massachusetts‚ a fourth-grade class was asked to list 25 things that reminded them of Christmas. When one young student asked if she could include “Jesus‚” her teacher replied that she could get fired if Christmas’ namesake appeared on the list. Things have not been much better outside the schools‚ muddled by those who subscribe to the misguided notion that the Constitution requires that anything religious in nature be banned from public places. In one West Virginia town‚ although the manger scene (one of 350 light exhibits in the town’s annual Festival of Lights) included shepherds‚ camels and a guiding star‚ the main attractions—Jesus‚ Mary and Joseph—were nowhere to be found due to concerns about the separation of church and state. In Chicago‚ organizers of a German Christkindlmarket were informed that the public Christmas festival was no place for the Christmas story. Officials were concerned that clips of the film “The Nativity Story‚” which were to be played at the festival‚ might cause offense. In Delaware‚ a Girl Scout troop was prohibited from carrying signs reading “Merry Christmas” in their town’s annual holiday parade. Clearly‚ Christmas has become one of many casualties in the misguided dispute over the so-called “separation of church and state‚” a controversy that has given rise to a disconcerting and unconstitutional attempt to sanitize public places of any reference to God or religion. Yet there’s a really simple solution to this annual angst of whether students and teachers can display Christmas-related posters‚ wear Christmas colors of red and green or sing Christmas songs‚ and that is for government officials to stop being such Humbugs and create a vibrant‚ open environment where all expression can flourish. While the First Amendment prohibits the government from forcing religion on people or endorsing one particular religion over another‚ there is no legitimate legal reason why people should not be able to celebrate the season freely or wish each other a Merry Christmas or even mention the word Christmas. Anything that might raise the specter of controversy is avoided at all costs. We are witnessing the emergence of an unstated yet court-sanctioned right‚ one that makes no appearance in the Constitution and yet seems to trump the First Amendment at every turn: the right to not be offended. In this way‚ emboldened by phrases such as “hate crimes‚” “bullying‚” “extremism” and “microaggressions‚” free speech has been confined to carefully constructed “free speech zones‚” criminalized when it skates too close to challenging the status quo‚ shamed when it butts up against politically correct ideals‚ and muzzled when it appears dangerous. Since April 2021‚ money supply growth has slowed quickly‚ and since November‚ we’ve been seeing the money supply repeatedly contract year over year. The last time the year-over-year (YOY) change in the money supply slipped into negative territory was in November 1994. At that time‚ negative growth continued for fifteen months‚ finally turning positive again in January 1996.  Money-supply growth has now been negative for twelve months in a row. During October 2023‚ the downturn continued as YOY growth in the money supply was at –9.33 percent. That’s up slightly from September’s rate decline which was of –10.49 percent‚ and was far below October 2022’s rate of 2.14 percent. With negative growth now falling near or below –10 percent for the eighth month in a row‚ money-supply contraction is the largest we’ve seen since the Great Depression. Prior to this year‚ at no other point for at least sixty years has the money supply fallen by more than 6 percent (YoY) in any month.  The money supply metric used here—the “true‚” or Rothbard-Salerno‚ money supply measure (TMS)—is the metric developed by Murray Rothbard and Joseph Salerno‚ and is designed to provide a better measure of money supply fluctuations than M2. (The Mises Institute now offers regular updates on this metric and its growth.) In recent months‚ M2 growth rates have followed a similar course to TMS growth rates‚ although TMS has fallen faster than M2. In October 2023‚ the M2 growth rate was –3.35 percent. Money supply growth can often be a helpful measure of economic activity and an indicator of coming recessions. During periods of economic boom‚ money supply tends to grow quickly as commercial banks make more loans. Recessions‚ on the other hand‚ tend to be preceded by slowing rates of money supply growth.  It should be noted that the money supply does not need to actually contract to signal a recession and the boom-bust cycle. As shown by Ludwig von Mises‚ recessions are often preceded by a mere slowing in money supply growth. But the drop into negative territory we’ve seen in recent months does help illustrate just how far and how rapidly money supply growth has fallen. That is generally a red flag for economic growth and employment. The fact that the money supply is shrinking at all is remarkable because the money supply in modern times almost never gets smaller. The money supply has now fallen by $2.8 trillion (or 13.1 percent) since the peak in April 2022. Proportionally‚ the drop in money supply since 2022 is the largest fall we’ve seen since the Depression. (Rothbard estimates that in the lead-up to the Great Depression‚ the money supply fell by 12 percent from its peak of $73 billion in mid-1929 to $64 billion at the end of 1932.) In spite of this recent drop in total money supply‚ the trend in money-supply remains well above what existed during the twenty-year period from 1989 to 2009. To return to this trend‚ the money supply would have to drop at least another $3 trillion or so—or 15 percent—down to a total below $15 trillion.  Moreover‚ as of October‚ total money supply was still up 32 percent (or $4.6 trillion) since January 2020.  Since 2009‚ the TMS money supply is now up by nearly 186 percent. (M2 has grown by 141 percent in that period.) Out of the current money supply of $18.9 trillion‚ $4.6 trillion—or 24 percent—of that has been created since January 2020. Since 2009‚ $12.2 trillion of the current money supply has been created. In other words‚ nearly two-thirds of the total existing money supply have been created just in the past thirteen years.  With these kinds of totals‚ a ten-percent drop only puts a small dent in the huge edifice of newly created money. The US economy still faces a very large monetary overhang from the past several years‚ and this is partly why after eighteen months of slowing money-supply growth‚ we are only now starting to see a slowdown in the labor market. (For example‚ job openings have fallen 22 percent over the past year‚ but have not yet returned to pre-covid levels.) The inflationary boom has not yet ended.  Nonetheless‚ the monetary slowdown has been sufficient to considerably weaken the economy. The Philadelphia Fed’s manufacturing index is in recession territory. The Leading Indicators index keeps looking worse. The yield curve points to recession. Temp jobs were down‚ year-over-year‚ which often indicates approaching recession. Default rates are rising.  Money Supply and Rising Interest Rates An inflationary boom begins to turn to bust once new injections of money subside‚ and we are seeing this now. Not surprisingly‚ the current signs of malaise come after the Federal Reserve finally pulled its foot slightly off the money-creation accelerator after more than a decade of quantitative easing‚ financial repression‚ and a general devotion to easy money. As of early December‚ the Fed has allowed the federal funds rate to rise to 5.50 percent‚ the highest since 2001. This has meant short-term interest rates overall have risen as well. In October‚ for example‚ the yield on 3-month Treasurys reached 5.6 percent‚ the highest level measured since December 2000.  Without ongoing access to easy money at near-zero rates‚ banks are less enthusiastic about making loans‚ and many marginal companies will no longer be able to stave off financial trouble by refinancing or taking out new loans. Commercial bankruptcy filings increased sizably during 2023‚ and continue to surge into the last quarter of the year. As reported by Monitor Daily:  The bankruptcy filing by WeWork in November propelled November commercial Chapter 11 filings to 842‚ an increase of 141% compared with the 349 filings registered in November 2022‚ according to data provided by Epiq Bankruptcy.The case filed by WeWork on Nov. 6 included 517 related filings‚ according to analysis from the American Bankruptcy Institute‚ representing the third-most related filings in a case since the U.S. Bankruptcy Code became effective in 1979.Overall commercial filings increased 21% to 2‚252 in November‚ up from the 1‚864 commercial filings registered in November 2022. Small business filings‚ captured as Subchapter V elections within Chapter 11‚ increased 79% to 181 in November‚ up from 101 in November 2022.There were 37‚860 total bankruptcy filings in November‚ a 21% increase from the November 2022 total of 31‚187. Individual bankruptcy filings also registered a 21% year-over-year increase‚ as the 35‚608 in November represented an increase over the 29‚323 filings in November 2022. There were 20‚250 individual Chapter 7 filings in November‚ a 23% increase compared with the 16‚421 filings recorded in November 2022‚ and there were 15‚280 individual Chapter 13 filings in November‚ a 19% increase compared with the 12‚862 filings last November. Lending for private consumption is getting more expensive also. In October‚ the average 30-year mortgage rate rose to 7.62 percent‚ the highest point reached since November 2000.  These factors all point toward a bubble that is in the process of popping. The situation is unsustainable‚ yet the Fed cannot change course without reigniting a new surge in price inflation. Although some professional economists insist that price inflation has all but disappeared‚ the sentiment on the ground is clearly one in which most workers believe their wages are not keeping up with rising prices. Any surge in prices would be especially problematic given the rising cost of living. Ordinary Americans face a similar problem with home prices. According to the Atlanta Fed‚ the housing affordability index is now the worst it’s been since 2006‚ in the midst of the Housing Bubble.  If the Fed reverses course now‚ and embraces a new flood of new money‚ prices will only spiral upward. It didn’t have to be this way‚ but ordinary people are now paying the price for a decade of easy money cheered by Wall Street and the profligates in Washington. The only way to put the economy on a more stable long-term path is for the Fed to stop pumping new money into the economy. That means a falling money supply and popping economic bubbles. But it also lays the groundwork for a real economy—i.e.‚ an economy not built on endless bubbles—built by saving and investment rather than spending made possible by artificially low interest rates and easy money.  Sweeping Plan for Global Censorship Exposed

The steep drop in demand for Covid shots reveals how Pfizer depended upon fraud to promote their most lucrative product. Would 92% of American adults have gotten a Covid shot had they known the “vaccines” only offered a 0.85% reduction in risk? Would young men have taken the jab if they had known it did not prevent transmission?  Americans came to understand that the media campaigns supporting the shots were fraudulent. The touted benefits – preventing infection and transmission – were lies. In response‚ fewer than one in five Americans elected to receive “boosters” despite multi-billion dollar propaganda campaigns.  Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has now brought a suit to bring accountability for the fraud that resulted in record profits for the pharmaceutical industry. Last week‚ he filed a complaint alleging that Pfizer misrepresented Covid vaccine efficacy and “conspired to censor public discourse” in violation of Texas’s Deceptive Trade Practices Act (DTPA). While Big Pharma enjoys immense government-provided insulation from legal liability for vaccine injuries‚ it cannot lie to promote those products. First‚ he must establish that the company lied or failed to disclose known information concerning its Covid vaccine. Second‚ he must prove that the company’s fraud was designed to promote sales of the shots.  Brownstone previously analyzed the applicability of the DTPA against Moderna. Now‚ Paxton’s lawsuit threatens Pfizer with fines of $10 million as well as awards of “restitution‚ damages‚ or civil penalties.”  Paxton’s case argues that Pfizer deceived the public on three issues: (1) the efficacy of the vaccine; (2) whether the shots reduced the risk of transmission; and (3) the company’s efforts to “censor[] persons who threatened to disseminate the truth.”  In each instance‚ the company skewed the public debate in order to induce Americans to take its shots. The efforts stripped us of the right to informed consent‚ deceiving us on purported benefits while hiding established risks.  Efficacy First‚ Paxton targets the now-familiar falsehoods that the company‚ led by CEO Albert Bourla‚ touted‚ including that the shots had “95% efficacy” and worked against mutations of the virus. Paxton’s critiques do not require the benefit of hindsight. Pfizer’s own data showed that the vaccine was merely 0.85% effectivein reducing the likelihood that an individual would contract Covid (known as absolute risk reduction). Put differently‚ Pfizer’s clinical data showed that “preventing one COVID-19 case required vaccinating 119.” Despite this unconvincing data‚ Bourla claimed there was “initial evidence of our vaccine’s ability to prevent Covid-19.” Bourla later said that the shots had “100%” efficacy rates against mutations of the virus‚ including the Delta variant. Not only was this a lie‚ Pfizer never tested the shots against the variants. Still‚ in May 2021 he baselessly claimed that “no variant identified so far…escapes the protection of our vaccine.”  Three months later‚ the company issued a press release saying that boosters would “preserve and even exceed the high levels of protection against…relevant variants.” Shortly thereafter‚ the United States exercised its option to purchase 500 million more doses of Pfizer’s Covid vaccines.  These lies clearly and directly induced Americans to take products with illusory benefits. The claims were fabricated‚ and they led to billions of dollars in windfalls for Bourla and Pfizer.  Transmission Pfizer’s marketing relied on convincing healthy young adults and teenagers to get shots despite the negligible risk that Covid posed to them. Bourla used transmission to launch a moral blackmail campaign. He told teenagers that they should get the shots to “protect…their loved ones.” He later tweeted‚ “widespread vaccination is a critical tool to help stop transmission.” Under oath‚ company officials later admitted that they had never tested whether the vaccines reduced transmission.  In October 2022‚ Pfizer spokeswoman Janine Small appeared at a European Parliament hearing. “Was the Pfizer Covid vaccine tested on stopping transmission of the virus before it entered the market?” asked Dutch MEP Rob Roos. “No!” Small responded emphatically. “We had to really move at the speed of science to really understand what is taking place in the market; and from that point of view‚ we had to do everything at risk.” Under the DTPA‚ Paxton must prove that the company misrepresented information regarding the vaccine in an effort to promote sales of its products. With the vast majority of Americans under 70 facing zero substantial risk from Covid infection‚ the lies regarding transmission were critical to expand the customer base.  This deception underpinned the mandates in 2021 as government and corporate officials insisted that vaccination was necessary to keep healthy adults’ coworkers and neighbors safe. By December 2021‚ Pfizer’s stock price had doubled from the onset of the pandemic in February 2020.  Censorship As Pfizer committed to deceiving the public‚ it had to ensure that journalists would not uncover its corporate misdeeds. Paxton’s suit outlines how the company “sought to intimidate and silence…journalist Alex Berenson.” As Berenson reported on the efficacy‚ or lack thereof‚ of mRNA “vaccines‚” Pfizer Board Member Dr. Scott Gottlieb colluded with Twitter to silence his reporting. In August 2021‚ Berenson tweeted that Pfizer’s vaccine “doesn’t stop infection…[o]r transmission‚” and had a“limited window of efficacy.” Despite the veracity of these statements‚ Gottlieb wrote to Twitter officials encouraging them to ban Berenson’s heresy.  Hours later‚ Berenson received a permanent ban (he was later reinstated following a lawsuit). Now‚ Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla is a defendant in Berenson’s case against the Biden Administration‚ which accuses White House officials of colluding with private actors in Big Tech and Big Pharma to usurp Berenson’s First Amendment rights.  Paxton’s case also outlines how Pfizer worked to silence scientists who discussed the benefits of natural immunity‚ calling the rhetoric “corrosive” to the public’s confidence in their products. The aim was simple: shield Americans from the truth so that they would continue to get the product.  A Rare Opportunity to Strike Back To this point‚ “victories” against the hegemon that emerged in 2020 have been defensive in nature. Groups have fended off vaccine mandates‚ states have resisted calls for renewed lockdowns‚ and journalists have begun to expose the corruption that shattered Western civilization.  These efforts‚ though important‚ have failed to bring accountability against those who usurped our civil liberties and pillaged the national treasury. Paxton’s suit strikes at the heart of the corruption behind the Covid regime: how their success required mass deception and their profits depended on lies.  Though $10 million in fines is little compared to the $75 billion in revenue that Pfizer raked in from vaccines alone‚ the suit signifies that the resistance is at last on the offensive.  Big Pharma sees this is a grave threat‚ and its lobbying forces led a failed impeachment effort against Paxton this fall. They threw him out of his office‚ and disabled his ability to do his job that the voters sent him to do. Turning up nothing‚ the legislature rejected the entire drama. It is ‘a bit of a historical accident" The thirty-year mortgage‚ of all things‚ came under attack in a piece by Ben Casselman in the New York Times. The three-decade fixed rate loan is‚ of course‚ a creation of the government and adds constant fuel to the US housing market. The title of Casselman’s piece calls the most popular debt instrument for home purchases “weird‚” “cushy‚” and “old.” He blames low interest rate thirty-year fixed loans for the broken housing market. Casselman points out that nearly 95 percent of US mortgages have fixed interest rates‚ and of those‚ more than three-quarters are for thirty-year terms. Once upon a time‚ homebuyers could only borrow half the purchase price for a home and that loan would be due in three years. The Federal Housing Association changed all of that in the 1930s. Casselman writes‚ “No one set out to make the 30-year mortgage the standard. It is ‘a bit of a historical accident‚’ said Andra Ghent‚ an economist at the University of Utah who has studied the U.S. mortgage market.” Herbert Hoover would be disappointed hearing that America’s favorite mortgage is an accident. Professor David Howden made the point‚ during a recent conversation with Jeffrey Barr and me‚ that a home purchase most often involves two transactions: the purchase of a home (real estate) and the sale of a mortgage or bond to finance the purchase. Going further‚ I would break a home purchase into three parts: first‚ the buyer is long the land and entitlements (what Austrians would call a higher-order good); second‚ the buyer will consume the house (as brick and mortar depreciates); and third‚ the buyer is short the mortgage. There is tremendous value in being short a low-coupon mortgage. As interest rates rise the value of the mortgage falls‚ adding value to the homebuyer’s purchase bundle. With mortgage rates at 7.25 percent‚ a homeowner’s short position on a 3.5 percent mortgage or bond may be half the face amount of the mortgage. The value is realized with the lower monthly payments. Not to mention the Fed’s money creation inflates the principle away. Why would anyone undue that trade? Unless they had to. And it gets better. As the New York Times scribe points out‚ mortgages can be prepaid with no penalty. When rates fall‚ mortgage companies fight tooth and nail to lower your payments. Or‚ as we might say‚ unwind your high coupon mortgage transaction and in turn sell a low-coupon mortgage. Indebted homeowners can have their cake and eat it too. And it gets better again. “By making it easier to buy‚ the government-subsidized mortgage system has stimulated demand‚ but without nearly as much attention on ensuring more supply‚” writes Casselman. Yes‚ if anything‚ many neighborhood groups and municipal governments are antigrowth. The Feds subsidize demand‚ while local governments constrict supply. Over time‚ prices must go up. What Casselman is bellyaching about is housing being unaffordable. He points his finger at the financially savvy folks who refinanced when the Federal Reserve carried out its zero interest rate policy and bought trillions of dollars’ worth of mortgage-backed securities via quantitative easing. The Fed purchased nearly $3 trillion in mortgage-backed securities just from March 2020 to March 2022. He mentions the central bank only once in his piece‚ how it is controlling inflation by raising interest rates. As if. Casselman mentions shorter mortgage terms and variable rates to fix the system. But he understands with $12.5 trillion in outstanding mortgage paper‚ most of it fixed‚ the government-created‚ thirty-year fixed rate mortgage isn’t going anywhere. To unstick the housing market‚ make all those existing low‚ fixed rate loans assumable. Some homeowners will happily sell their well-played short bond position along with the land and house.
