Pet Insurance: Something to Pay For‚ But Hopefully Never Need

The post Pet Insurance: Something to Pay For‚ But Hopefully Never Need by Dr. Karyn Kanowski BVSc MRCVS (Veterinarian) appeared first on Catster. However‚ we appreciate that you like the article and would love it if you continued sharing just the first paragraph of an article‚ then linking out to the rest of the piece on Catster.com.Hi‚ Im Dr. Karyn!Read my introductionto learn more about me and meet my five hilarious cats: Clutch‚ Cyril‚ Alex‚ Zelda‚ and Zazzles.I want to let you in on a secret. The part of a veterinarians job that they hate the most isnt euthanasia. It isnt dealing with aggressive or overly boisterous‚ out-of-control dogs. It isnt trying to examine a sharp-toothed‚ razor-clawed cat that would like nothing more than to scratch your eyes out and eat your entrails for dinner. Its not even trying to communicate a complex surgical procedure or medical condition to an owner while their five children under four years old run screaming around the consulting room unrestrained and apparently unnoticed by their oblivious parent‚ though that last one comes a close second.The part of a veterinarians job they hate the most is talking about money.We all worked hard‚ studied hard‚ and spent hours and hours of our university holidays on practical placements because we love animals‚ and want to be able to help them any way we can. No vet gets into this job for the money‚ and if they did‚ they were clearly misled somewhere along the way! Veterinarians earn‚ on average‚ around USD $100‚000 per year‚ putting us at number 86 in salary rankings.1 Im not suggesting that $100K is a small sum‚ but considering the amount of technical knowledge‚ skill‚ and responsibility involved in the position‚ the fact that it takes around 8 years of study‚ with average university loans between $80-200K‚ believe me‚ were doing it for the love of the animals‚ not because were hoping to get rich!Sparky‚ who was brought into my clinic after being hit by a car‚ receiving some pain reliefWhere Does My Money Go?The majority of veterinary practices are businesses. We arent government-funded‚ and as you all know‚ healthcare is expensive. The equipment‚ consumables‚ drugs‚ support staff‚ buildings‚ utilities‚ and ongoing training to keep up to date with techniques and information‚ all cost money. And damn right‚ your vet deserves to be paid too!Something that has impacted veterinary charging over the last decade or so is the rise of Veterinary Consolidators‚ like Mars‚ who have branched their interests from snacks and chocolate into the world of pet health care. This corporate giant now owns an astounding 3000 veterinary practices worldwide‚ 37 major pet food companies‚ including Royal Canin‚ Iams‚ Whiskas‚ and Sheba‚ 11 veterinary diagnostic companies‚ and has a controlling interest in major online veterinary pharmacies and suppliers.What does that mean for pet owners?It means that your local independent veterinary practice can be bought out by a wealthy company without you knowing a thing about it‚ because they cleverly keep all the original branding and signage‚ so that their corporate ownership only appears in the fine print.It means that on top of all the ordinary expenses faced by a veterinary practice‚ any profits have to funnel into the pockets of shareholders and board members‚ who now control the price of your pets veterinary care‚ leaving the vets and support staff to deal with the backlash from increasing prices.It means that no matter how angry or frustrated you might feel when the cost of veterinary care increases‚ your vet‚ even the practice owner‚ has no control over the prices.Why are veterinary practices selling to these corporations? Because the competition they have created in the market makes it almost impossible for independent practices to stay afloat.Sparky after surgeryWhats This Got To Do With Insurance?Yes lets get back on track. Along with everything else‚ the price of pet insurance has been steadily increasing‚ which has led many pet owners to make the difficult decision to cancel their policies or switch to a cheaper company‚ but here are the problems with that decision:Many of the companies that offer lower premiums willincrease the cost of their cover each year‚ and whenever a claim is made.only pay out for certain conditions‚ and may only pay out a very limited amount per condition.only cover a condition for 12 months‚ which is fine if it is a one-off injury or illness‚ but if it is something that may come back later in life‚ or be a life-long condition‚ such as diabetes‚ a 12-month policy wont be much help.If you switch companies‚ any conditions noted in your pets history will not be covered. For example‚ if your cat had a painful knee when they were 2 years old and then needs surgery on that knee five years later‚ if you have changed companies in that time‚ you will not be covered for the surgery.If you cancel your insurance policy because of affordability‚ there is very little chance that you will be able to pay for a treatment or surgery that might cost thousands of dollars.Pet insurance companies typically have a minimum 14 day no-claim period‚ so if youre thinking you can just take out a policy when you notice a problem with your pet‚ it wont necessarily work.As a vet‚ there are obviously some things that I can do for my own pets‚ although its not always easy to detach myself from them to actually do it! But all my pets are covered by pet insurance‚ because I know that the things that I cant do are going to be expensive! As you may be aware‚ I have five cats (and five dogs)‚ so pet insurance is a large expense each month‚ but it is something that we have committed to paying by taking in these pets. We have opted to not have any of the big television subscriptions‚ we are extremely frugal when it comes to grocery shopping‚ and we are regularly buying and selling on Facebook Marketplace (which is great from a sustainable standpoint too). I am very aware that we are in a much better financial situation than many people‚ but the point I want to make is that if you have a pet‚ I strongly urge you to see where you might be able to sacrifice a monthly expenditure to make room for pet insurance.Our cats depend on us to look after them‚ and by taking them in‚ we are saying that we are able to provide them with the best care we can‚ and unfortunately‚ that care is becoming more expensive. Believe me‚ I know how frustrating it is to see your pet insurance premiums coming out of your bank account each month‚ when its something you (hopefully) wont ever use; I estimate that we have spent over $15‚000 in insurance for our current group of cats‚ and have never made a claim! But if something happens to your beloved cat‚ and you are looking at a veterinary bill of $3000 or more‚ you will be extremely grateful that you found that $15-20 per month for insurance.When Sparky was brought into our clinic a couple of years ago after escaping and being hit by a car‚ we didnt know if he was going to make it; he needed major surgery to repair his broken pelvis and jaw‚ with an estimated cost of around $4000. Fortunately‚ Sparky had a microchip and we were able to get in touch with his owners quickly‚ and they said the words every vet wants to hear in this situation: go ahead‚ hes insured.Sparky 48 hours after surgery I want to go home!As vets‚ we dont make money from insurance‚ and the one and only reason we so strongly recommend it to our clients is that‚ when the worst happens‚ we want to do everything we can to help get your cat healthy and back home to you. We know that prices are increasing‚ and we know how much stress that can add to an already difficult situation. Believe me‚ your vet hates having to talk about money when your cat is in trouble‚ but you know what we love to hear?Dont worry‚ weve got pet insurance.We hope you never need it‚ but when something goes wrong‚ youll be glad you do.The post Pet Insurance: Something to Pay For‚ But Hopefully Never Need by Dr. Karyn Kanowski BVSc MRCVS (Veterinarian) appeared first on Catster. Denis Villeneuve Is Doing Dune Messiah

News Dune Messiah Denis Villeneuve Is Doing Dune Messiah Please ready your best dune it again jokes By Molly Templeton | Published on April 5‚ 2024 Comment 0 Share New Share There couldve been an infallible prophecy about this. Thats how inevitable it was. Last year‚ Denis Villeneuve said he only wanted to do one more Dune movie‚ making Dune Messiah to close out a trilogy. A wise man‚ he told Empire‚ After that‚ the books become more esoteric.A third Dune movie wasnt official until now‚ in the wake of Dune 2 doing exceedingly well at the box office. And yet the announcement that he and Legendary are developing Dune Messiah was still so much of a foregone conclusion that it is tucked into a Deadline piece about an entirely different movie. But its nice to have a level of certainty!Dune Messiah takes place some years into Paul Atreides rule. As the book synopsis says:Dune Messiah continues the story of Paul Atreides‚ better knownand fearedas the man christened MuadDib. As Emperor of the known universe‚ he possesses more power than a single man was ever meant to wield. Worshipped as a religious icon by the fanatical Fremen‚ Paul faces the enmity of the political houses he displaced when he assumed the throneand a conspiracy conducted within his own sphere of influence.And even as House Atreides begins to crumble around him from the machinations of his enemies‚ the true threat to Paul comes to his lover‚ Chani‚ and the unborn heir to his familys dynastyThere are political machinations‚ clones‚ children‚ deaths‚ and more politics. And philosophical musings‚ too.It takes a while to make a sandworm saga‚ so Dune Messiah wont be on screens any time soon. Do You Have Knismolagnia? First-Of-Its-Kind Study Dives Deep Into The Tickle Fetish

This might be a bit forward of us‚ but were asking anyway: how do you feel about tickling? Is it just something you used to torture your siblings as a kid‚ or is it still something you like to incorporate into more grown-up playtime? If so‚ you might well have knismolagnia‚ otherwise known as a tickle fetish. And you may be pleased to hear that scientists have just completed their first comprehensive study to learn all about it.Previous studies on ticklishness have mainly focused on the sensory consequences and playful aspects of tickling‚ said co-author Dr Shimpei Ishiyama from the University Medical Center Mainz in a statement. In our study‚ we investigated the role of tickling in a sexual context for the first time.Wed probably make a slap and tickle joke right about now‚ if we were those sorts of people.This study forms part of a wider research project on the neuroscience behind positive experiences and laughter. For this study‚ the authors first reached out to a number of prominent tickle fetishists on social media platform X‚ which yielded five who were willing to participate further. These five‚ with a combined following of 27‚956 users‚ agreed to share a link to a survey in either Japanese or English‚ depending on the language they usually posted in.Over the course of the 108 days the link was open for‚ the researchers collected 719 anonymous responses to both multiple choice and free text questions about tickling preferences and sexuality. Some surprising themes began to emerge.[W]e are challenging previous findings because the range of experiences that lead to sexual pleasure is much wider than previously recognized‚ Ishiyama explained.Most of the respondents said they found tickling sexually gratifying‚ and around a quarter said they had achieved orgasm just through tickling. Over 20 percent reported they had enjoyed tickling sessions for over an hour at a time. The data also identified two distinct roles in sexual interactions involving tickling: the tickler and the ticklee.There were some consistent themes around which parts of the body ticklers and ticklees like to focus on feet featured heavily‚ unsurprisingly but there was also some variation depending on the nature of the tickling being discussed.Here';s something they didn';t tell you in school: there are two distinct types of tickling. Theres gargalesis‚ which is more vigorous and typically leads to a stronger reaction‚ and knismesis‚ characterized by gentler touches to the skin. Knismesis was favored around regions like the ears‚ neck‚ and back‚ whereas gargalesis was generally preferred on the torso and armpits.The data also provided some insight into why some people love being tickled or doing the tickling‚ with responses including enjoying the feeling of submissiveness‚ or taking pleasure in the ticklees physical reaction.Another interesting finding that emerged was the role of childhood experiences in the development of a tickling fetish‚ with several respondents saying that depictions of tickling in cartoons theyd watched as a kid triggered their continuing interest in the practice in adulthood.Theres still a lot we dont understand about the interplay between sexual pleasure and tickling‚ but the only way were going to find out more is through studies like this one.As Ishiyama says‚ Tickling is an intimate activity that requires a certain level of mutual trust. It can bond individuals and serve as an outlet for sexual energy. Future studies should therefore investigate the mechanisms by which tickling triggers sexual pleasure. Our study results could pave the way for this further research into human sexuality.The study is published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Frogs Are Screaming But We Cant Hear Them

The rainforest can be a noisy place to be‚ so how do you make yourself heard if you end up in trouble? For the clay robber frog‚ the answer is to give off an almighty scream but its one that we humans cant naturally hear. However‚ a team of scientists have now successfully recorded it for the first time.The use of ultrasound is common in the animal world for communication and echolocation bats‚ dolphins‚ and whales are all known to use it. Frogs can use ultrasound to chatter too‚ though some researchers suspected that they might employ it to make distress calls as well.Now‚ the screams of the clay robber frog (Haddadus binotatus)‚ a species endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest‚ have helped to confirm this theory.To do so‚ the team had to get the frogs into defense mode. This involved holding the frogs by their back legs‚ a tried and tested method for simulating an attack by a predator. In response‚ the frogs raise up the front of their bodies‚ jerk their heads back and open their mouths wide almost as if preparing themselves‚ and then partially close their mouths.Does this remind anyone else of the ";Pop Cat"; meme?Image courtesy of Ubirat Ferreira Souza‚ illustration by Lucas RosadoAs recordings revealed on two occasions‚ this slight closing of the mouth coincided with a high-frequency distress call. Though parts of the calls were between 7 to 20 kilohertz‚ a frequency that humans can hear‚ there were also components that went above 20kHz and up to 44 kHz thats ultrasound territory‚ which humans cant hear.The defensive positioning of the frogs suggests that the distress call also has a defensive purpose‚ but exactly how the call is meant to ward off predators is unclear. One possibility is that it scares a whole host of different predatory animals away.Some potential predators of amphibians‚ such as bats‚ rodents and small primates‚ are able to emit and hear sounds at this frequency‚ which humans cant‚ said first author Ubirat Ferreira Souza in a statement.One of our hypotheses is that the distress call is addressed to some of these‚ but it could also be the case that the broad frequency band is generalist in the sense that its supposed to scare as many predators as possible.But screaming their heads off to scare away predators is just one theory. It might also be a call out to the predators of their predators‚ the researchers suggest.Could it be the case that the call is meant to attract an owl that will attack a snake thats about to eat the frog? Souza hypothesized.Its a question that the team hopes to answer with future research‚ which they also hope will determine whether there are other species of frogs silently screaming too.The study is published in the journal acta ethologica.

Interview with an exorcist: ';God always takes the first step';

Exorcisms are on the rise.Of all the symptoms of America';s decline‚ it';s one of the least discussed. But it speaks volumes about our country';s growing mental health crisis and inexorable drift into darkness.";One of the unique things about Christianity is that it';s not about our search for God‚ it';s about God';s search for us.";As exorcist for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis for the last two decades‚ Father Vincent Lampert has seen it firsthand.In that time‚ the number of exorcists in America has grown from about 12 to roughly 125. (Theres no official number‚ as many exorcists remain anonymous.) Lampert also belongs to the International Association of Exorcists‚ which comprises 905 priests from nearly 60 countries worldwide.A growing darknessWhen Lampert began‚ he averaged about 100 inquiries a year regarding possible demonic possessions. Since then‚ it has climbed to about 1‚800. He recounts some of his harrowing yet faith-bolstering experiences in his 2020 book ";Exorcism: The Battle Against Satan and His Demons.";When Lampert took the time to speak to me just before Easter‚ we began our interview with a blessing. A reminder that‚ despite his unusual specialization‚ Lampert remains a parish priest at heart. ";Being an exorcist gives me a good balance in rediscovering priesthood as a vocation‚"; he tells me.Thanks to the distortions of Hollywood‚ many people don';t realize that exorcism is not just a struggle against Satan that relies on the power of Jesus Christ and the authority of his Church.It is also itself a form of prayer and a ";ministry of compassion."; It';s an active devotion to God designed to subvert the evil ones mission to separate us from our creator.In Lampert';s words‚ his job is to show ";the afflicted the face of God"; through an act of mercy that unleashes Gods love against the attacks of the devil‚ bringing healing and peace.";Exorcism as a rite is grounded in the Gospels‚ which offer instructions from Christ himself on how to expel demons‚ as well as in the Acts of the Apostles and the epistles. Lampert points especially to Mark‚ with its four accounts of demonic expulsion.He differentiates between minor exorcisms a prayer for deliverance‚ said by anyone and major exorcisms official liturgy performed only by priests‚ trained like Lampert‚ who have earned special permission.As a successor to the apostles‚ the local bishop is the exorcist of his diocese. Its up to him to bestow this charism‚ or spiritual gift‚ on a priest. The priest has to remain in his diocese‚ under the guidance of his bishop.Fr. Lampert compares the parish priest to a primary care doctor‚ while an exorcist resembles a highly trained specialist whose services are needed much less often.Under attackThe job is not without its risks.The devil certainly knows those who are working to defeat him‚ he tells me in the interview. Certainly‚ parish priests are on the front line of that. And then exorcists in the unique role that they play in the life of the church can also be up against really extra attacks by the devil because again he knows that exorcists are working to defeat his plan to bring people into the light of Christ‚ so he will try to trip us up.Exorcisms are free‚ a service to the world. People who pay for an exorcism‚ says Fr. Lampert‚ will likely need one after‚ even if they didn';t before.Lampert says that most people who contact him have already self-diagnosed themselves or their loved ones‚ which often fuels hostility if Lampert determines that they are not afflicted.The afflicted arent only Catholics. It also includes people from every faith and religion‚ including those with no belief at all.Lampert began his role as exorcist seemingly by fate‚ filling the role after the previous exorcist (coincidentally a childhood friend) died. The archbishop delivered the news without blinking: The young priest was headed to Rome to study the rite of exorcism.He had concluded that Lampert had a suitable mindset for the role an awareness of the ubiquity of evil combined with a healthy skepticism. Also key was that Lampert didn';t want the job.In their final visit before the archbishop died of cancer‚ the archbishop playfully apologized to Lampert for placing him in the role.In Rome‚ Lampert studied under a veteran priest who wasted no time in throwing his charge into the deep end.Lampert bemoans the rise of individualism packaged as freedom. He stresses that it is obedience that sets a person free; there is no freedom without God. As John writes‚ To all who received Him‚ who believed in His name‚ He gave power to become children of God.Letting the light inAdds Lampert: I would say to people that the devil';s like a cockroach. And if you go into a room where the light';s off and you flip a light on and there';s bugs in the room‚ they';re going to scurry for every crack and crevice that they can find. And when the church in the ministry of exorcism turns the light of Christ on in the lives of these people who have been deceived by the evil one‚ then the devil‚ like a cockroach‚ is going to scurry back into the darkness.The first action for Catholics who believe theyre afflicted is to go to confession: When we confess our sins‚ we place them in the hands of God‚ and once we have given them to God‚ the devil may no longer use them against us.But if that isnt enough‚ its time for an exorcist‚ who becomes an instrument of Gods power.I think one of the unique things about Christianity is that it';s not about our search for God‚ but it';s about God';s search for us. So‚ anytime the human person is lost‚ God always takes the first step. Think of Adam and Eve in the garden after they had sinned. God moves to the garden and says to Adam‚ ';Where are you?';Lampert is a man clearly devoted to this vocation. His easygoing charm and humor contrasts with the heaviness of our subject matter.That said‚ he';s quick to point out that the work can be spiritually‚ mentally‚ and physically draining. It demands a training regime: a total devotion to prayer‚ fasting‚ confession‚ and worship.Recovery sometimes requires special measures. One of Lampert';s first assignments took a year until the demon was finally cast out. People hearing this story often want to know what Lampert did next celebrate mass? Do a holy hour?Not quite. Lampert headed to the nearest Dairy Queen for a large chocolate shake.";It was a very hot day here in Indiana‚"; Lampert says. ";It was crowded. And I said to myself‚ ';If these people knew where I just came from‚ I would be like Moses parting the Red Sea because they couldn';t get away from me fast enough.';";

De-transitioner warns shareholders that Disney will pay a price for ';stealing the voices of thousands of little Ariels';

A victim of so-called ";gender-affirming care"; informed Disney shareholders Wednesday that the company may soon face lawsuits over its support of employees'; genital mutilations. Chloe Cole‚ a woman left permanently scarred by gender ideology‚ further stressed the importance of the company looking into providing benefits for those who seek to ";detransition.";The woke companyThe Walt Disney Company has worked hard to earn the admiration of LGBT radicals‚ securing for itself a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation';s Corporate Equality Index since 2007.The corporate behemoth has signaled its ideological compliance in various ways.Besides throwing around its weight in an effort to dissuade lawmakers from executing the will of voters and upholding parental rights‚ Disney also covers travels expenses for its employees to kill their unborn children. For those children ultimately permitted to live‚ Disney offers ";gender affirmation benefits.";Accordingly‚ Disney helps employees‚ their spouses‚ and their children get sex-change mutilations‚ elective mastectomies‚ and ruinous hormone therapies.The company does so even though:the so-called experts at the World Professional Association for Transgender Health the organization that wrote the go-to guide on ";gender-affirming care"; have been outed admitting in private both that children cannot provide informed consent and sex-change surgeries can have nightmarish consequences; England';s National Health Service has highlighted there is little to no evidence showing an upside to the use of puberty blockers in minors; Finland';s leading child psychiatrist Riittakerttu Kaltiala has underscored that most kids will grow out of the delusion that their gender and sex are misaligned; andthe core claim used by gender ideologues to justify sex-change mutilations has been utterly debunked.The scarred patientChloe Cole‚ 19‚ knows firsthand just how devastating the treatments that Disney';s employee benefits cover can be.Cole told the Florida Boards of Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine Joint Rules/Legislative Committee in 2022‚ ";At 13‚ I started taking puberty blockers and testosterone. At 15‚ I underwent a double mastectomy in which my breasts were removed and my nipples were grafted. And yet‚ at 16‚ after years of medically transitioning‚ I came to realize I severely regretted my transition.";";I want to be a mother someday‚ and yet I can never naturally feed ... my future children. My breasts were beautiful and now they have been incinerated for nothing. Thank you‚ modern medicine‚"; said Cole.The gender ideology victim‚ who noted at the time that her chest remained scarred and her nipples continued to bleed‚ has become a patient advocate for Do No Harm. DNH represents medical professionals‚ patients‚ and policymakers keen on ridding the medical establishment of identity politics and gender ideology.In addition to raising awareness about the fallout of ";gender-affirming care‚"; Cole has also taken legal action against Kaiser Permanente‚ accusing the institution and her former doctors of performing experimental and mutilating treatment.The shareholder meetingCole called into Disney';s annual shareholders meeting Wednesday‚ underscoring the consequence of the procedures they cover and the possibility there may be legal consequences on the horizon.";Disney pays for gender transition interventions‚ but not de-transitioning care. Therefore‚ the Company discriminates based on gender identity under EEOC regulations‚"; said Cole. ";I speak from personal experience as someone who was deceived and physically harmed at a young age by gender ideology‚ validated by the medical industry‚ and pushed to the masses by corporations like Disney.";Cole detailed how‚ as a minor‚ she was given irreversible puberty blockers and a double mastectomy.";My body has been irreversibly damaged‚ and years later‚ my chest is still in bandages‚"; continued Cole. ";My doctors have abandoned me. Now doctors look and shrug.";Cole further noted that she has filed suit against ";those professionals who steered me into taking these destructive steps that have permanently scarred me.";";But Disney‚ in its arrogance‚ has responded to our proposal by stating that I am only trying to ';generate attention'; for a ';limited agenda.'; Mr. Iger‚ Disney under your watch is pushing the ';limited agenda'; of gender ideology‚"; continued Cole. ";Disney has become the Ursula that is stealing the voices of thousands of little Ariels across the world by telling us we can be something that we can never become.";";The lawsuits are coming‚ sir. Its only a matter of time before current or past employees‚ whose bodies and lives have been irreversibly harmed‚ will show up at your door looking for justice and restitution‚"; added Cole. Just got off the phone from the @Disney annual shareholders meeting.\n\nI needed to call out Bob Iger and the rest of the board\u2019s hypocrisy and the dangerous lies they feed to us through the media. \n\nHere is what I said: (@) The proposalCole concluded her call by requesting that shareholders consider the ";Gender-Based Compensation Gaps and Associated Risks"; proposal presented by the National Legal and Policy Center.The proposal asks that Disney investigate its benefits policies to determine whether they are discriminatory against de-transitioners.It specifically requests that the board of directors issue a report by Dec. 31 ";about compensation and health benefit gaps‚ which should include how they address dysphoria and de-transitioning care across gender classifications‚ including associated reputational‚ competitive‚ operational and litigative risks‚ and risks related to recruiting and retaining diverse talent.";The NLPC indicated that the company';s board of directors has opposed the proposal because it ";intended to serve the particular interest of the proponent.";The board unsuccessfully sought permission from the Securities and Exchange Commission earlier this year to exclude the proposal from consideration at the annual meeting.The NLPC noted in its response‚ filed with the SEC‚ that ";besides the inherent discriminatory infrastructure established by Disney within its compensation policies and programs‚ the Company has opened the door wide to reputational and legal risk due to gender ideology and the affirmation of sex transitioning medical coverage. The de-transitioners'; litigiousness may be at a trickle now‚ but the diversity-obsessed Company should prepare for an eventual flood of lawsuits from angry‚ mutilated current and former employees.";While Cole was able to put the proposal before the shareholders‚ the Huffington Post indicated they ultimately rejected it.Like Blaze News?
