Why You Should Think Twice Before Leaving Out Soup Overnight

If you’ve ever intentionally or accidentally left a soup or stock in the pot overnight‚ you’ve probably wondered if it is still safe to eat after reheating. Harold McGee had the same question‚ especially when he heard about the food writer Michael Ruhlman’s practice of using stock from a pot left out all week. He talked to a food safety expert to find out if reboiled stock is still safe to eat when you leave it out for one night — or even several days. READ MORE...

CDC’s Latest Abortion Numbers: A Sobering Reminder of Monumental Task Ahead

The most recent report on abortion from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is out and‚ as usual‚ it’s grim. The number of abortions rose from 620‚327 in 2020 to 625‚978 in 2021. The key drivers in this depressing increase are a greater use of dangerous chemical abortion pills and weakened safety protocols governing the use of such pills. We can expect to see some big changes next year‚ when the CDC releases numbers for 2022 numbers (as some states already have done). Why? Last summer‚ the Supreme Court righted a grave wrong and overturned Roe v. Wade and abortion on demand with its ruling in the case known as Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. More than a dozen states quickly enacted strong pro-life laws protecting women and unborn children. Knowing that 2022 data will reflect post-Roe policy changes at the state level‚ it could be tempting to write off the 2021 numbers as “old news.” But that would be a mistake. Abortion pills aren’t just the key driver behind the rise in abortions in recent years. The pills are also among the biggest threats to pro-life progress in post-Roe America. Let’s dive into the data. Some important caveats: The numbers don’t show the whole picture because there’s no national reporting standard. Each state collects data a little differently‚ and reporting isn’t mandatory (California‚ New York‚ New Hampshire‚ and New Jersey don’t report anything at all). However‚ the CDC data is still helpful in seeing overall trends. At first glance‚ you can see the decline in the total number of abortions in the past two decades: 857‚475 in 2000 but dropping to 625‚978 in 2021. For many years‚ the number of abortions went down each year. But after hitting a low in 2017‚ the number has been ticking up again. Chemical abortion is largely to blame. Let’s take a closer look. Abortion pills were approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in fall 2000. In 2001‚ chemical abortions were a mere 3% of all abortions. But in 2021‚ that number skyrocketed to 56% of abortions. From 2001 to 2016‚ there was a steady increase in the percentage of abortions that were chemical in nature. After that‚ though‚ the percentage of chemical abortions began climbing fast. There’s a simple reason for this: lax safety rules. Under the original FDA approval‚ abortion pills could be taken as late as 49 days of gestation‚ or seven weeks. The pills also had to be prescribed by a physician and dispensed in person‚ and multiple in-person visits for examination and follow-up were required. In 2016‚ the FDA updated these longstanding safety protocols. Pills could be taken up as late as 70 days of gestation (10 weeks)‚ health care practitioners other than physicians could prescribe them‚ and although the pills had to be dispensed in person‚ later in-person follow-ups no longer were required. These changes made dangerous abortion pills far more accessible. Then‚ in early 2021‚ under the guise of containing the spread of COVID-19‚ the Food and Drug Administration dropped the rule that these dangerous drugs must be dispensed in person. Suddenly‚ the pills could be shipped through the mail. Later in 2021‚ the FDA announced that it would make this change permanent and set up a process for retail pharmacies‚ such as Walgreens and CVS‚ to distribute abortion pills too. The 2021 data doesn’t fully reflect those latest changes‚ but we’ll see what happens when the CDC’s 2022 data comes out next year. Importantly‚ that data will reflect the post-Roe landscape in which a dozen states moved to fully protect life. We can hope for some good news. One study finds that 32‚000 lives have been saved so far since the high court’s ruling. But pro-abortion states‚ the abortion industry‚ and its allies in the Biden administration will rely on abortion pills to undermine the pro-life state laws. How can pro-life states fight back? They must enforce existing laws to prevent do-it-yourself mail-order abortion pills. Federal policymakers also must work to protect women and unborn children from these dangerous drugs. They have a chance to do so not just through a stand-alone bill to nullify the FDA changes‚ but through the appropriations process. While we wait for more recent numbers‚ the CDC’s 2021 abortion data should remind us of the stakes. These abortion numbers represent thousands of irreplaceable human beings whose lives were violently ended by abortion. Building a culture of life requires changing laws‚ but it also requires changing hearts and minds. Let’s hope that the babies who get to celebrate a birthday thanks to the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision can help do just that. Have an opinion about this article? Mayor Eric Adams: ‘NYC Is A Place Where You Could Experience A Plane Crashing Into Our Trade Center’ [WATCH]

Democrat New York City Mayor Eric Adams made the most bizarre comment when asked to describe the year in one word. Adams went into a tangent on what you can experience in the Big Apple. “When you look at the totality of the year‚ if you had to describe it in a substitute in one word‚ what would that word be and tell me why‚” said PIX11 Morning News anchor Dan Mannarino. “New York. This is a place where everyday you wake up you could experience everything from a plane crashing into our Trade Center to a person who’s celebrating a new business that’s open‚” Adams responded. “This is a very‚ very complicated city. And that’s why it’s the greatest city on the globe‚” he added. WATCH: DAN MANNARINO: [Describe the year in one word &; tell me why that word.] MAYOR ADAMS: "New York. This is a place where everyday you wake up you could experience… a plane crashing into our Trade Center… And that's why it's the greatest city on the globe." DM: "Uh-huh." pic.twitter.com/6VNG83j8Bd — Ira Goldman (@KDbyProxy) December 18‚ 2023 Many said Adams’ response was possibly the worse they have heard. X users reacted to Adams’ befuddling statement about New York City: Only Eric Adams could blow a softball question like this. And this badly. https://t.co/wiU7Zmb2Ni — Lionel (@LionelMedia) December 19‚ 2023 How do we continue to elect people this freaking stupid? What a disgrace. https://t.co/YHcTgYq9lN — Jake Asman (@JakeAsman) December 18‚ 2023 WTF: Eric Adams Says NYC Is the World's Greatest City Because Any Day Could Be Another New 9/11https://t.co/xhH5dJoSRG — Bongino Report (@BonginoReport) December 19‚ 2023 This may go down as the worst answer of 2023. https://t.co/TlRAxJMUOK — Jack McGuire (@JackMacCFB) December 18‚ 2023 I'm not sure that selling New York as a place where you can experience 9/11 is the best argument that can be made for the world's greatest city… https://t.co/GYiiF2Y8wD — Josh Dawsey (@jdawsey1) December 18‚ 2023 From Fox News: Elsewhere‚ during the interview‚ Adams spoke about the continuing migrant crisis affecting his city. He revealed that without additional aid from the federal government‚ the city will be forced to make budget cuts. “Well‚ let’s be clear. What we’re going to have to do is extremely painful‚” Adams said. “We’re going to have to see how do we deliver services to our agencies all without the resources we normally have.” As Daily Mail noted‚ it’s the latest blunder for the struggling Democrat mayor. Adams’ 9/11 reference was described as “somehow the worst Eric Adams moment.” It's amazing though‚ this really is somehow the worst Eric Adams moment pic.twitter.com/8iH2tqjVdl — Populism Updates (@PopulismUpdates) December 18‚ 2023 Per Daily Mail: The social media backlash is just the latest for Adams‚ who has had a tough year leading the Big Apple. On Sunday he called out the Biden administration and the federal government over its ‘baffling’ inability to address the migrant crisis. In a Sunday interview‚ Adams was asked why his fellow Democrats in DC have ignored his repeated‚ in-person pleas to help‚ the mayor said he was at a loss and the migrant problem had spread to other cities. ‘I find it baffling because now you are hearing the coalitions that started with Eric‚ now it has gone to Chicago‚ Massachusetts‚ Denver… so many municipalities are joining me and saying this is impacting our city‚ so I’m not sure why we’re not seeing a response’ Adams told ABC 7. Adams has estimated the city will spend $12 billion over the next three years to handle the influx‚ setting up large-scale emergency shelters‚ renting out hotels and providing various government services for migrants. Earlier this month the Democrat announced a $110.5 billion budget‚ claiming cuts across all departments were necessary after the city spent $1.45 billion in fiscal 2023 on the migrant crisis. The budget cuts would cause NYPD officers to be cut by a fifth‚ or 13.5 percent‚ by postponing the next five academy classes‚ bringing officers below 30‚000 – down from 36‚000.

Wastewater To Drinking Water Approved By California Regulators

Wastewater To Drinking Water Approved By California Regulators

On Tuesday‚ California regulators unanimously approved rules for water agencies to recycle wastewater and repurpose it for drinking water. “The California State Water Resources Control Board voted to approve regulations that would streamline ‘direct potable reuse’ (DPR) — a method by which purified wastewater is released right into a public water system or just upstream from a treatment plant‚” The Hill reports. DPR was dubbed “toilet-to-tap.” California regulators adopt wastewater reuse rules‚ knocking "toilet-to-tap" misnomer https://t.co/w2EjWBylc6 — The Hill (@thehill) December 19‚ 2023 “California approves treated potty water for drinking water. 21st century green hell‚ here we come!” Steve Milloy commented. California approves treated potty water for drinking water. 21st century green hell‚ here we come!https://t.co/qyNntU6MiL pic.twitter.com/WMaj8vD4Fq — Steve Milloy (@JunkScience) December 19‚ 2023 More from The Hill: “We’ve been working on these regulations for over 10 years now‚ making sure that it’s absolutely protective of public health‚” Darrin Polhemus‚ deputy director of the board’s division of drinking water‚ said at the Tuesday hearing. This will also hardly be the first instance of repurposing sewage in California. Utilities in the Golden State and around the country have long practiced “indirect potable reuse‚” the injection of treated wastewater into environmental buffers — such as groundwater aquifers or lakes — before its discharge into a public system. Unlike indirect potable reuse‚ however‚ DPR does not use an underground aquifer or any type of environmental storage barrier. Instead‚ the process involves either sending purified wastewater directly into a treatment plant or first blending it with other water sources — a milder alternative known as “raw water augmentation” — prior to doing so. Drought-prone California OKs new rules for turning wastewater directly into drinking water https://t.co/FYB1aDcZp4 — The Associated Press (@AP) December 19‚ 2023 “California’s new rules would let — but not require — water agencies take wastewater‚ treat it‚ and then put it right back into the drinking water system. California would be just the second state to allow this‚ following Colorado‚” the Associated Press noted. AP reports: It’s taken regulators more than 10 years to develop these rules‚ a process that included multiple reviews by independent panels of scientists. A state law required the California Water Resources Control Board to approve these regulations by Dec. 31 — a deadline met with just days to spare. The vote was heralded by some of the state’s biggest water agencies‚ which all have plans to build huge water recycling plants in the coming years. The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California‚ which serves 19 million people‚ aims to produce up to 150 million gallons (nearly 570 million liters) per day of both direct and indirect recycled water. A project in San Diego is aiming to account for nearly half of the city’s water by 2035. Water agencies will need public support to complete these projects — which means convincing customers that not only is recycled water safe to drink‚ but it’s not icky. California’s new rules require the wastewater be treated for all pathogens and viruses‚ even if the pathogens and viruses aren’t in the wastewater. That’s different from regular water treatment rules‚ which only require treatment for known pathogens‚ said Darrin Polhemus‚ deputy director of the division of drinking water for the California Water Resources Control Board.

Kamala Harris Launches Nationwide Abortion ‘Freedoms’ Tour

Vice President Kamala Harris is launching a nationwide tour to promote abortion access as President Biden’s 2024 team starts ramping up its campaign efforts. The “Fight for Reproductive Freedoms” tour will start in Wisconsin on January 22‚ which is the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade‚ according to a statement from the White House. More dates and locations will be announced soon. Roe v. Wade‚ the landmark Supreme Court case that legalized abortion nationwide‚ was overturned in June last year. “There is a full-on attack in our country against the ability of people to just make decisions about their own body and their life‚” Harris said in a video message posted Tuesday to X. Across our nation‚ there is a full-on attack on a woman's fundamental freedom to make decisions about her own body. In the new year‚ I will be traveling the country to organize‚ build community‚ and fight back. Because when we fight‚ we win. pic.twitter.com/wvZF94FJZa — Vice President Kamala Harris (@VP) December 19‚ 2023 She added in a statement‚ “Extremists across our country continue to wage a full-on attack against hard-won‚ hard-fought freedoms as they push their radical policies – from banning abortion in all 50 states and criminalizing doctors‚ to forcing women to travel out of state in order to get the care they need.” The tour comes as polls show that for the first time‚ Americans view Harris more favorably than President Biden‚ whose approval numbers are currently in the basement. Biden received a dismal 34% approval rating while Harris enjoyed a slightly higher 35% approval‚ according to a Monday poll from Monmouth University. During the tour‚ Harris will host events that “highlight the harm caused by these abortion bans” and share “stories of those who have been impacted.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP Harris will also “hold extremists accountable” for proposing a national abortion ban and call on Congress to reestablish legalized abortion as provided by Roe v. Wade‚ the White House said. The vice president will also promote what the Biden administration is doing to preserve legal abortion and “urge attendees to use their voices and stay engaged in the fight for fundamental freedoms.” In September‚ Harris went on a separate “Fight for Our Freedoms” college tour in eight states where she emphasized abortion‚ as well as gun laws‚ climate change‚ voting laws‚ LGBT issues‚ “teaching America’s full history‚” and books restricted by certain school districts for what some parents say is inappropriate content. Abortion has remained a hot button issue as the presidential election cycle heats up‚ especially in the wake of nearly two dozen state bans restricting abortion‚ some with very limited exceptions. Republicans have celebrated the pro-life movement’s recent victories‚ while Democrats have leaned into the abortion issue‚ hoping their efforts will yield voter backlash in 2024. In 2020‚ there were more than 620‚000 abortions across 47 states and the District of Columbia‚ according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Guttmacher Institute puts the national total significantly higher at more than 930‚000 abortions for 2020. Only half of Americans want abortion to be legal after 15 weeks‚ which is around the beginning of the second trimester‚ according to a June Associated Press poll.
