White House calls squatting a &;#039;local issue&;#039; that governments must address

The White House is calling the squatting trend in which strangers seize and live in a homeowner's property against their wishes a "local issue" that local governments must address themselves. Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy asked White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Monday whether Americans need to be worried about squatters and where President Biden stands on the issue as horror stories continue to make headlines. "My understanding is that this is obviously a local issue...

Schumer Announces Senate Will ‘Consider Legislative Options’ To End ‘Judge Shopping’

Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said on Monday the Senate will consider “legislative options” after a federal court in Texas rejected a guidance against the so-called “practice of judge shopping.” The top Democrat issued a post to X that bemoaned how the Northern District of Texas decided to “keep allowing the odious practice” after it rejected guidelines from the Judicial Conference of the United States. “Judge shopping has been abused by right-wing activists to subvert the will of...

D.C. Cardinal Slams Joe Biden as ‘Cafeteria Catholic’

Washington‚ D.C.‚ Cardinal Wilton Gregory slammed President Joe Biden on Sunday for being a “cafeteria Catholic‚’’ picking and choosing what doctrines he wants to believe in; he cited the president’s support for “abortion rights” and transgender “visibility” as examples. Biden‚ only the second Catholic president‚ following John F. Kennedy‚ has actively campaigned for expanded abortion rights‚ gay marriage‚ and “gender-affirming care‚” all of which his Church opposes. Jimmy Fallon asked people to share 'funny‚ weird‚ or embarrassing' stories about their dads

There are many traditional staples of fatherhood—love‚ support‚ protection‚ security‚ providing an example—but there is‚ of course‚ that other not-so-warm-and-fuzzy feeling that dads can provoke in their kids at any given moment … sheer‚ utter embarrassment.Usually in a father’s humiliation tool belt is the infamous dad joke. These corny puns have been around since 2003‚ and let’s face it‚ they’ll never leave. Of course‚ no dad needs one to make your eyes roll. They can do that most of the time simply by being themselves. For his well-known #Hashtags segment‚ Jimmy Fallon asked his “Tonight Show” audience to share “funny‚ weird‚ or embarrassing” stories about their dads. Fallon‚ a father himself‚ is no stranger to the cringeworthy power of a dad joke. In a 2020 interview with TODAY‚ Fallon admitted‚ “I’m starting to get the eye rolls now where Daddy’s not the funniest person in the world.”Don’t worry Fallon! Clearly you’re not alone‚ because people replied with some truly hilarious comments. Dads might be silly‚ but we’ll gladly put up with it for the love they give us.Enjoy 20 of the very best #DadStories. As usual‚ Fallon went first:1."Instead of buying a smoker my dad just grills in the garage with the door closed." – @jimmyfallon2."At my aunt’s wedding reception‚ my dad ran out from the bathroom when he heard You Should Be Dancing by the Bee Gees play‚ and proceeded to do John Travolta’s routine from Saturday Night Fever." – @MJ_Rose883."My Dad will call me sometimes when he wants me to bring him food. He refers to me as 'GrubDash.'" – @FalPalAMF8284."My dad likes to play a very morbid game called 'guess who died'‚ which consists of him gossiping about someone I probably haven't seen in 20+ years and can't remember at all‚ who died recently. Bonus points for guessing the cause of death." – @jon_jonz5."My dad used to drink his morning coffee with his dentures in his hand while reading the newspaper. When we asked him why‚ he said his teeth also wanted to read the newspaper." – @FallonHolic_6."When my dad took my sister to her first Jr. HS dance‚ she asked to be dropped off a block before the school. My dad proceeded to take her all the way up to the main entrance‚ got out of the car and loudly announced her arrival!" – @77BroncosFan7."Asked my dad if he knew who Taylor Swift was...he said‚ I don't care who he is!" – @JessyKrupa8."My dad whistles really loud. He sticks his head out the window and whistles back to birds. But when the lady next door heard him‚ she called 911. The cops told her‚ 'Lady‚ he didn’t whistle at you. He only flirts with birds.'" – @tostianascripts9."When my dad would leave a message on my answering machine‚ he would end the message saying‚ 'This is dad signing off.'" – @RealRobFindor10."We were on vacation and the gift shops selling fudge called plain fudge 'chocolate no nuts.' A guy walked up to my dad with some samples and offered him some saying 'chocolate no nuts?' And my dad said 'what did you just call me?'" – @lauraceciliaOT11."My Dad laid a new floor in my brother's house. It was all finished so we couldn't understand why he was taking up the boards again. Turns out he had seen a spider run underneath and was worried it would be trapped." – @Sohnzie12."Whenever my dad would try to talk us into trying something new to eat he'd state‚ 'It's so good it'll put hair on your chest.' He had 3 daughters." – @Bookelew13."My mom once bought a 6 ft Santa statue at a yard sale without telling dad. When he got home and parked‚ we heard banging‚ crashing and swearing. We went to look and the Santa was laying face down on the curb. Dad thought someone was trying to jump him." – @dknessfalls14."My dad couldn’t decide if he wanted to be called 'grandpa' or 'papa' so he just told all of us to call him 'Coach.' He’s not a coach." – @iPopEditor15."My father went to the McDonalds drive thru and asked for a whopper. When they said 'they didn’t have whoppers'‚ He just drove off without placing an order." – @Marisa_Rosie2216."One day we went out to eat at Pizza Hut and sat in front of an empty table with some pizza left on it. My dad‚ being the penny pincher he is‚ grabbed some and started eating it. A few minutes later the couple comes back from the bathroom asking 'where’s our pizza?'" – @Alex_Erickson317."My dad let a bee land on his hand and watched it closely as it stung him because he 'wanted to see the process up close.'" – @TrippyPsycholo118."My dad once tried to tell a lady she had a Big Bug on her‚ but accidentally told her she had a Really Big Butt. She was not amused." – @Sallyjo2519."My dad thinks it's funny to introduce my mom as his 'first wife'....my parents have been married for 58 years and are in their late 80's." – @annMcD8720."My dad entered Canada by swimming across the Niagara from the US under the cover of night." – @albertduicThis story originally appeared on 06.17.22

1980s cultural icon Michael Winslow made an emotional comeback on 'America's Got Talent'

Actor‚ comedian‚ and self-proclaimed "voicetramentalist‚" Michael Winslow was just about everywhere in the '80s. His incredible ability to make sound effects with his voice and uncanny beatboxing skills landed him the role of officer Larvell Jones in all seven "Police Academy" movies. He also did voiceover work in "Gremlins" and appeared in Mel Brooks' "Spaceballs."But Winslow was forced to scale back his career in 1993 after the death of his first wife Belinda Church. As a single father‚ he had to stop appearing in films so he could spend more time with his children. He continued to star in the occasional commercial‚ perform stand-up comedy‚ and make guest appearances‚ but he didn't have the profile he once had.Back in July of 2021‚ Winslow stepped back in the spotlight with a performance on "America's Got Talent." After some prodding from his son‚ he decided it would be the perfect venue to relaunch his career on television. In the '80s‚ he was known as "The Man of 10‚000 Sound Effects‚" but things have changed since then‚ he now claims to have "hundreds of thousands.""Now‚ after raising my two kids‚ I'm in a different phase. I think this is my time‚" Winslow‚ 62‚ said on the episode. "And America's Got Talent is the place for me to show the world I still have something to offer‚ I still have some sounds to make. There's still room for a little more."Judge Simon Cowell was excited to see Winslow when he took the stage. "We know you!" Cowell exclaimed. "I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that you are here!"Winslow then gave a stunning performance where he impersonated the chimes on an airplane‚ beatboxed to Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust‚" and performed Jimi Hendrix's version of "The Star Spangled Banner." His performance was proof that after five decades in show business Winslow hasn't lost a step and‚ in fact‚ he may be at his peak. After his performance‚ Winslow won a standing ovation from the audience and four "gigantic yeses" from the panel."My life has changed again for the better‚ and I've gotten another blessing‚" Winslow told Terry Crews after leaving the stage. America's Got Talent is the place for me to show I still have something to offer. I've still got some sounds to make‚ and there's still room for a little more."Winslow is a great reminder that sometimes when celebrities seem to fade away‚ it isn't necessarily because they're washed up or past their prime. They are humans with real challenges just like the rest of us and real-world events can affect their career trajectories. It's great to see such a wonderful performer get another shot at the big time. This article originally appeared on 07.14.21

A 10-panel comic explores a subtle kind of racism many people of color experience.

A 10-panel comic explores a subtle kind of racism many people of color experience.

If we're being honest‚ we all make assumptions about other people‚ right? We look at their skin‚ their clothes‚ and their car‚ and we make guesses about them that we don't even realize we're making. Everyone does it. You ask a pregnant female coworker if she'll keep working after the baby is born — but you wouldn't think to ask that question of a guy who was about to become a dad.You ask that nice girl behind the counter at the bagel shop whether she'll ever go to college so she can get a better job — only to learn that she's an underemployed Ph.D.You ask a hipster-looking guy on the subway whether he's into artisanal pickles — but he just happens to be a bad dresser who has no idea what you're talking about. The fact is‚ though‚ that people of color deal with other people's assumptions constantly.Research shows that other people's expectations can have a profound effect on us. They can determine our success or failure. And black women deal with this nonsense more than others. In a recent study‚ nearly half of the female black and Latina scientists polled reported being mistaken for janitors or administrative staff.Let's agree to fix this. This story originally appeared on 12.15.15

Men try to read the most disturbing comments women get online back to them.

Men try to read the most disturbing comments women get online back to them.

Trigger warning for discussion of sexual assault and violence.A recent video by Just Not Sports took two prominent female sportswriters and had regular guys* read the awful abuse they receive online aloud.Sportswriters Sarah Spain and Julie DiCaro sat by as men read some of the most vile tweets they receive on a daily basis. See how long you can last watching it.*(Note: The men reading them did not write these comments; they're just being helpful volunteers to prove a point.)It starts out kind of jokey but eventually devolves into messages like this:These types of messages come in response to one thing: The women were doing their jobs. Those wishes that DiCaro would die by hockey stick and get raped? Those were the result of her simply reporting on the National Hockey League's most disturbing ordeal: the Patrick Kane rape case‚ in which one of the league's top players was accused of rape.DiCaro wasn't writing opinion pieces. She was simply reporting things like what the police said‚ statements from lawyers‚ and just general everyday work reporters do. In response‚ she received a deluge of death threats. Her male colleagues didn't receive nearly the same amount of abuse. It got to the point where she and her employer thought it best to stay home for a day or two for her own physical safety. The men in the video seemed absolutely shocked that real live human beings would attack someone simply for doing their jobs. Most found themselves speechless or‚ at very least‚ struggling to read the words being presented.Think this is all just anecdotal? There's evidence to the contrary. The Guardian did a study to find out how bad this problem really is.They did a study of over 70 million comments that have been posted on their site since 2006. They counted how many comments that violated their comment policy were blocked. The stats were staggering. From their comprehensive and disturbing article:"Although the majority of our regular opinion writers are white men‚ we found that those who experienced the highest levels of abuse and dismissive trolling were not. The 10 regular writers who got the most abuse were eight women (four white and four non-white) and two black men. Two of the women and one of the men were gay. And of the eight women in the 'top 10'‚ one was Muslim and one Jewish. And the 10 regular writers who got the least abuse? All men."So what can people do about this kind of harassment once they know it exists? To start? Share things that make people aware it's happening. Listen to the Just Not Sports podcast where they talk about it.If you know someone who talks like this to anyone on the internet‚ CALL THEM OUT. Publicly‚ privately — just let them know it's not OK to talk to anyone like this.Don't stop talking about it. Every day‚ the harassment continues. Don't let it linger without attention. There are no easy answers. But the more people who know this behavior exists‚ the more people there will be to tell others it's not OK to talk to anyone like that.Watch the whole video below:.This article originally appeared on 04.27.16

A woman requested inspiring middle-age success stories‚ and the internet delivered—big time

Media outlets love to compile lists of impressive people under a certain age. They laud the accomplishments of fresh-faced entrepreneurs‚ innovators‚ influencers‚ etc.‚ making the rest of us ooh and ahh wonder how they got so far so young. While it's great to give credit where it's due‚ such early-life success lists can make folks over a certain age unnecessarily question where we went wrong in our youth—as if dreams can't come true and successes can't be had past age 30.Weary of lists celebrating youngsters‚ television writer and producer Melissa Hunter sent out a tweet requesting a new kind of list for 2020. "Instead of 30 Under 3 or NextGen lists‚" she wrote‚ "please profile middle-aged people who just got their big breaks. I want to read about a mother of 2 who published her first novel‚ a director who released their first studio feature at 47‚ THAT'S THE LIST WE WANT." \u201cAt the end of 2020‚ instead of 30 Under 30 and NextGen lists‚ please profile middle-aged people who just got their big breaks. I want to read about a mother of 2 who published her first novel‚ a director who released their first studio feature at 47‚ THAT'S THE LIST WE WANT.\u201d — Melissa Hunter (@Melissa Hunter) 1578416584 The Twitterverse responded with a resounding "YAAASSS." Story after story of folks finding success in their 40s‚ 50s‚ and beyond began pouring in. If you worry that you're not far enough along in your 20s or 30s‚ or think it's too late for you to follow your passion in the autumn of your life‚ take a look at these examples of people crushing it in their mid-to-late adulthood.Take this mother of four teens who released her first full-length book at 45 and started law school this year at age 47.I am a mother of four‚ I released my first full-length book at 45‚ and started law school this year—at 47—with four teenagers in the house. Some of us are late bloomers‚ but wow‚ when we figure it out...🔥— Tracy M (@dandelionmama) January 7‚ 2020 Or the woman who published two books in her late 50s and is revising book #3 at age 60. Oh‚ she also started running at age 45.My first book was published when I was 57‚ second‚ at 58‚ and now at age 60‚ working on revisions for book #3. Also‚ I didn't start running until after I turned 45 (averaged 1‚000 miles/year for several years.) #nevertoold #nevertoolate #nevergiveup #dreambig #workhard— Jill Hannah Anderson (@JillHannahA) January 7‚ 2020 Another person shared how they got out of prison for drugs at age 49‚ stayed clean and started their own business‚ and broke the $1 million sales mark last year at 56."Lauching my clothing line now—at 48‚" wrote a mom of two. "Next venture feels amazing."Another user chimed in with "Yes! Plus the 40 under 40‚ 30 under 30 can be quite contrived (sometimes). I want to see people juggling school‚ career‚ and family.”Yet another mother of two teens finished her PhD at 41 and got a tenure-track position at age 47. She's also working on a book on Indigenous Early Childhood.Finished my PhD at 41 with two teens as an Indigenous woman in public health. Finally got a tenure-track position after gig work in 2018 at age of 47. I'm an Associate Director &; Assistant Prof with an academic book in the works on Indigenous Early Childhood— Dr. Angela Mashford-Pringle (@armp71) January 8‚ 2020 How about this woman who hadn't taken a math class for 40 years? She aced her statistics classes and will graduate with a perfect GPA after she turns 60. "Lots of life to live!" she says.Workings on my doctorate. I had not taken a math class for 40 years but aced statistics and advance statistics with A’s. I will graduate with a 4.0 at the ripe age of 60+. The dissertation is all I have left. Lots of life to live!— N Stevens Carrell (@greekfromidaho) January 8‚ 2020 Another mom (are we seeing a theme here?) discovered a passion for interior design and won a national TV design challenge in her late 40s. Now‚ at 60‚ she has a successful design career and contributes to radio and magazines.I was a stay at home Mum for years. In my late 40’s I discovered a passion for interior design &; won a national TV design show challenge. I now have incredible clients &; projects‚ contribute to national radio‚ and write a popular magazine column. I’m 60 this year‚ and on fire! pic.twitter.com/3mjGRrnidv— Anne Tuohy (@RoomJunkieAnne) January 9‚ 2020 Of course‚ we also know there are fabulously successful folks who got a "late" start in Hollywood‚ including the incomparable Ava DuVernay‚ "who left her job at age 40 to focus on filmmaking and then became the first black woman to make over $100 million at the box office.”As one man pointed out‚ "The idea that you've got five years between 20 and 30 to do everything you're ever going to do is ridiculous." Hunter agreed‚ writing‚ "The advice is always that it's a marathon‚ not a race‚ and I wanna read about the people who finished that marathon!!"congrats! and agreed. the advice is always that it's a marathon‚ not a race‚ and i wanna read about the people who finished that marathon!!— Melissa Hunter (@himelissahunter) January 7‚ 2020 So many stories of people publishing their first books‚ landing their ideal jobs‚ or discovering a passion later in life just kept coming‚ and person after person shared how inspiring and motivating they were.Of course‚ not everyone has lofty career goals. If these stories aren't quite hitting the mark for you‚ check out this woman's contribution to the conversation. She's "just a regular human‚" she says‚ but she went to Zimbabwe and volunteered at a wildlife refuge at age 47. "Life doesn't just peter out after 30‚" she wrote. "My friend Elsa is 96 and went on an archaeological dig at 75. I want to be like her."Don't we all.I didn’t publish anything‚ I’m just a regular human‚ but I went to Zimbabwe and volunteered at a wildlife refuge at 47‚ saw Victoria Falls. Life doesn’t just peter out after 30. My friend Elsa is 96 and went on an archaeological dig at 75. I want to be like her. pic.twitter.com/LAu8Pbhe7z— Kate (Santa’s Version) ❄️ (@KateGrand) January 8‚ 2020 Age really is just a number‚ and there's nothing magical about "making it" in your younger years. Let's be sure to celebrate people living their best lives and making dreams come true at any and every age. This article originally appeared on 01.10.20

Why Beyonce's 'Protector' song has parents bawling

Not even 24 hours after its release‚ Beyoncé’s soulful‚ genre-bending “Cowboy Carter” album broke records on Spotify‚ becoming the platform’s most-streamed album in a single day so far this year. With 27 tracks—ranging from thought-provoking covers to an eclectic array of originals—there’s a little something for everyone. There’s even a more whoopass version of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.” But there’s one tune in particular that’s striking a cord with parents. Not to mention making them shed a few tears. In “Protector‚” there’s a quick snippet of Bey’s youngest daughter Rumi asking mom for a “lullaby.” The heartfelt acoustic ballad proceeds to be just that‚ and more. The tender lyrics touch on the special love oath a parent makes to their child—both to shield them from the world‚ and help them shine in it.This can most clearly be seen in the chorus‚ which says:"And I will lead you down that road if you lose your way / Born to be a protector‚ mm-hmm / Even though I know someday you’re gonna shine on your own / I will be your projector.” "I first saw your face in your father’s gaze‚” she sings‚ perhaps referencing the love shared between them that helped create their child. (excuse my while I wipe a tear) “Protector” is such an emotional bullseye that one person on X dubbed it this year’s “Mother’s Day anthem.” Another listener agreed‚ “Bey gave us Protector right in time for Mother’s Day.”Of course‚ there were many more reactions where that came from. Especially from new parents.“Listening to protector while rocking my 7 month old son to sleep….. Beyonce you gonna need to start paying for my therapy cause the way these tears are flowing‚” one person shared.Another added‚ “Just bawled my eyes out listening to Protector… as a new mom that one hit different Beyoncé.”But that doesn’t mean childless folks weren’t moved.“I don’t even have kids and Protector on #COWBOYCARTER has me like this on my drive to work‚” read one X post. If you’re one of the very‚ very few who haven’t heard it‚ grab some tissues and give it a listen below. Then go call your mom‚ if you can:

Couple lives permanently on cruise ships because it costs ‘half’ the price of life on land

Given the rapidly changing cost of living in the United States‚ lifestyle options that once seemed luxurious are now starting to look like good deals. A growing trend is that retirees are choosing to spend their golden years on cruise ships instead of living in a retirement community. The latest examples of this trend are John‚ 76‚ and Melody Hennessee‚ 64. Before retiring‚ John was a doctor and the couple also owned an art gallery in Stuart‚ Florida. In 2021‚ the couple sold everything and purchased an RV to see the country‚ but after a few years‚ they were exhausted. “The constant maintenance‚ fueling‚ and planning‚” he told Realtor.com.So‚ instead‚ the couple‚ who had extensive boating experience‚ decided to cruise the world. In March 2021‚ they began boat hopping‚ moving from one cruise ship to another. “I've been a sailor all my life‚ and we love cruising and traveling‚” John told The Daily Mail.Every day‚ they wake up in a new location. According to Realtor.com‚ their favorite spots are Bora Bora‚ Santorini and Croatia. View this post on Instagram A post shared by NDTV (@ndtv) The couple even found that it was cheaper to cruise-ship hop than live on land."We now have a telephone bill‚ a ship bill‚ and a few credit card bills for when we go ashore‚ but that's it‚" John told SkyNews. "We no longer have a mortgage or the expense of homes. We no longer have vehicle insurance‚ property insurance‚ or utility bills. The list goes on. We are certain cruising is cheaper.""Right now‚ it is probably close to half of what it was when we lived on land‚” he added. The couple is currently booked on cruises through December 2024‚ and in 2027‚ they will embark on the cruise of a lifetime. They have purchased a $2.9 million 600-square-foot cabin on the MV Narrative‚ a residential cruise ship. They will own the cabin as long as the ship is afloat.Single 225-square-foot studio residencies on the boat start as low as $597‚000.The ship boasts 20 dining and bar concepts‚ a theater‚ 18 decks‚ laundry service‚ gyms‚ and hobby areas and it has a doctor and dentist on hand for emergencies. Discover the inspiring story of John and Melody Hennessee‚ who chose a life of adventure on cruise ships. They believe it could be half as expensive as living on land. Read more at: https://t.co/cS9quZtfq8 — (@) The couple loves the hassle-free convenience of living on a cruise ship and they also get to see the world as well. “[The MV Narrative] is gonna take three and a half years to go around the world and every stop‚ they'll spend at least three to five days‚ which on a cruise ship you have just a few hours. We really love that concept‚” John said.Life is easy for residents of the NV Narrative because it’s all-inclusive. You never have to pull out your wallet‚ except for the occasional special meal. The all-inclusive fees start at around $2500 per month per adult.“We're so excited. We just love the idea of having our own residence on a residential ship‚” Melody told The Daily Mail. We are beside ourselves. We're really‚ really looking forward to it because‚ like we said‚ we're cruising now; we have 45 more cruises booked.”
