Apple releases tvOS 17.6 to Apple TV users

Ahead of the tvOS 18 release, Apple just made tvOS 17.6 available to all Apple TV users. As the tvOS 17 cycle seems to be nearing its end, Cupertino isn't adding new features despite the usual "bug fixes and security improvements" release notes. While tvOS 17 started as a big update, tvOS doesn't get new features since January when Apple released tvOS 17.3. At that time, Apple added two features: Wishlists and Favorites: Apple re-added Wishlists and Favorites tabs on the iTunes Movies and iTunes TV Show apps, as they’re not available on the revamped TV app Apple Music: Users can now see Apple Music Collaborative Playlists on the Music app. While they can’t start a collaborative playlist from the Apple TV, they can see the collaborators of a list and who added each song. With tvOS 17.4, Apple started working on SharePlay for Apple Music, so users could join the Now Playing queue by using a QR Code. However, the company removed references for this feature ahead of its release, and it's now promoting this function as part of the tvOS 18 update. However, while tvOS 17 nears its end in a mild way with tvOS 17.6, tvOS 18 looks like a big update. These are some of its main features: InSight: An Amazon Prime Video-like feature that displays timely information about actors, characters, and music from Apple TV+ movies and shows onscreen in real-time. Users can select an actor to view their background and filmography page or quickly view the song that is playing in a scene and add it to an Apple Music playlist. Enhance Dialogue: This feature is getting smarter, leveraging machine learning and computation audio to deliver greater vocal clarity over music, action, and background noise on Apple TV 4K. In addition to HomePod speakers, users can now enjoy Enhance Dialogue when listening through built-in TV or HDMI-connected speakers, AirPods, and other Bluetooth-connected devices, and when playing supported content on iPhone and iPad; Automatic subtitles: Subtitles now automatically appear at just the right moments with tvOS 18, including when the language in a show or film does not match the device language when users mute, or when they skip back while watching something. FaceTime with Continuity Camera: Apple adds Live Captions for English in the US and Canada, so users can read what others are saying on a FaceTime call from the TV. Apple Fitness+: A redesigned interface helps users make the most of the library and explore the exercises they like the most. Alongside tvOS 17.6, Apple also released iOS 17.6, iPadOS 17.6, watchOS 10.6, macOS 14.6, and visionOS 1.3. macOS 14.6 now available with unexpected iPod nano bug fix and more

After a month of beta testing, Apple just released macOS 14.6 to everyone. This might be the last main macOS Sonoma update before macOS Sequoia is released later this fall. With that, Apple continues to focus on Apple Silicon Macs instead of Intel-based models. While macOS 14.6 doesn't seem to add new features, Apple says it has resolved several issues users could be facing. These are the main bugs fixed with the latest macOS update, including an issue affecting iPod nano users: Finder: Home Videos unexpectedly sync as Music Videos to iPod nano (7th generation). This no longer occurs. ARKit: iPhone and iPad apps on Apple Silicon Macs quit unexpectedly when initializing ARSkeletonDefinition. Core Spotlight: iPhone and iPad apps on Apple Silicon Macs quit unexpectedly when invoking -[CSSearchableItemAttributeSet setActionIdentifiers:]. Video Subscriber Account:  iPhone and iPad apps on Apple Silicon Macs quit unexpectedly if VSOpenTVProviderSettingsURLString is referenced.  Video Toolbox: Fixed an issue on Apple Silicon; if width or height is greater than 4096 columns or rows and content uses 4:2:0 chroma subsampling and 8-bit depth, the hardware decoder driver will reject it, and a software decoder will be automatically selected to ensure artifact-free decoding. AVC (H.264) content at level 5.2 or lower can be handled by the hardware decoder. Content that otherwise conforms to level 5.2 but has a high frame rate (e.g., 4k at 100 or 120 fps) is labeled level 6, 6.1, or 6.2 and is also handled by hardware. If the content is 10-bit, 4:2:2, or 4:4:4, the hardware decoder will be used.  If we find anything else on macOS 14.6, we'll make sure to update this article. In addition to macOS Sonoma 14.6, Apple is also releasing iOS 17.6, iPadOS 17.6, watchOS 10.6, tvOS 17.6, and visionOS 1.3. visionOS 1.3 now available for Apple Vision Pro users

Ahead of visionOS 2 release, Apple has made visionOS 1.3 available to Apple Vision Pro users. With this update, we expect overall improvements to core Vision Pro features, such as Persona, EyeSight, and the environments. That said, visionOS 1.3 is the first update after Apple Vision Pro expanded to new regions. Now, the spatial computer has reached new markets in America, Europe, and Asia. With visionOS 1.2, Apple added: Mobile Device Management: Enables account-driven device and user enrollment using Managed Apple IDs, support for device configuration (Wi-Fi, VPN, email accounts, single sign-on, and more), and support for remote erase via MDM and device inventory data; Messages: Adds support for iMessage Contact Key Verification Accessibility: Closed captions can be anchored to the playback control while viewing Apple Immersive Video Persona (beta) and EyeSight: Adds an option to enroll your Persona hand-free, improves hair and makeup appearance, neck and mouth representation, and rendering of the eyes for EyeSight Virtual Keyboard: Cursor positioning for text input is more accurate Mac Virtual Display: Improves reliability to discover and connect to a Mac using Mac Virtual Display Captive Network Support: Ability to set up your device while using a captive W-iFi network such as those found at hotels, cafes, and airports Besides that, Apple keeps improving Apple Vision Pro with visionOS 2. Currently in beta, this upcoming software update will bring features like: patial photos: With visionOS 2, users can revisit past memories by creating spatial photos directly from their library in the Photos app.  New hand gestures: visionOS 2 makes navigating Apple Vision Pro faster and easier for users to access key functions with new hand gestures to get to frequently used features like Home View and Control Center. New gestures allow users to see important information at a glance, like the current time and battery level, and perform actions like adjusting the volume. Mac Virtual Display: It will feature a higher resolution and larger size, creating an ultra-wide display equivalent to two 4K monitors side by side.  Home View:  Users can now personalize their Home View by rearranging apps and placing them wherever they want, including their compatible iPhone and iPad apps Travel Mode for Trains: Travelers can experience their favorite apps on the go, even on trains If we find anything new with visionOS 1.3, we'll make sure to update this article. Alongside visionOS 1.3, Apple also released iOS 17.6, iPadOS 17.6, watchOS 10.6, macOS 14.6, and tvOS 17.6. Genes from Ancient Viruses in Human DNA Linked to Development of Cancer

An eye-opening new study from genetic scientists at the University of Colorado-Boulder has discovered something surprising and alarming about some mysterious foreign DNA found in the human genome. This DNA was introduced into the genomes of human ancestors tens of millions of years ago by ancient retroviruses, and has survived intact even into the modern age. In the past most of this genetic material was dismissed as “junk” DNA, meaning it was thought to stay inactive and not contribute to human development or metabolism in any way. But in a new article just published in Science Advances, the UC Boulder scientists demonstrate that at least some of this DNA plays a vital role in the growth and proliferation of cancer cells, which means this incredibly old DNA is also incredibly dangerous when it is activated. “Our study shows that diseases today can be significantly influenced by these ancient viral infections, that until recently very few researchers were paying attention to,” study senior author Edward Chuong, an assistant professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology, explained in a University of Colorado-Boulder press release.
