A Tiny Quadcopter Could Gather Rocks for China’s Sample Return Mission

Space exploration is always changing. Before February 2021 there had never been a human made craft flying around in the atmosphere of another world (other than rocket propelled landers arriving or departing). The Mars Perseverance rover changed that‚ carrying with it what can only be described as a drone named Ingenuity.  It revolutionised planetary exploration and now‚ China are getting in on the act with a proposed quadcopter for a Mars sample return mission. Our exploration of Mars has generally been limited to orbiters‚ landers and rovers. The orbiters are fantastic at getting planet wide data or data covering huge swathes of land and the landers are great at getting surface detail‚ even analysing surface material. The rovers added an extra dimension by being able to explore the landing area but generally‚ the rovers were slow and unable to traverse significant distances. They were also unable to move over very uneven terrain giving them limited capability. Mars Perseverance Rover (Credit : NASA) When Perseverance landed it took with it the Ingenuity drone or more correctly it was classed as a helicopter. Its wingspan was 1.2m from tip to tip of the rotor blades and weighed in at 4 pounds (although on Mars it weighed 1.5 pounds). Whilst its range was only 300m it proved it could be done and since its deployment has completed 66 flights‚ covering a total of 14.9km.  A paper recently published by the Harbin Institute of Technology and the China Academy of Space Technology proposed a quadcopter for use on Mars that would‚ unlike Ingenuity‚ be capable of collecting a sample weighing up to 100g and return it to the lander.  The key challenge to achieve this is the rarefied nature of the Martian atmosphere. It is less than 1% of that on Earth and as a result‚ the lift generated by a rotor blade is significantly lessened.  To enable sufficient lift‚ the blades are oversized by Earth standards.  Alternative solutions to drones were explored from earlier designs like the aeroplane based ‘Astroplane’ with a wingspan of 21m or the ‘MAP MarsFlyer’ with a wingspan of 1.73m. Both styles were discounted due to construction availability of take off and landing areas.  The team concluded rotorcraft were the correct configuration and set themselves to design something that could retrieve and transport samples for return missions to Earth.  The paper provides detailed design schematics of both flight (including autonomous flight) systems‚ rotor configuration‚ mechanical arm‚ imaging technology and the avionics system. The described MarsBird V11 is very much just on the drawing board at the moment and is not slated for any mission yet but it is exciting to think the future of Mars exploration is from the Martian air.  Source : A Mars quadcopter capable of autonomous flight and sample collection: Structure and avionics The post A Tiny Quadcopter Could Gather Rocks for China’s Sample Return Mission appeared first on Universe Today.

Telescopes Didn’t Always Play Nicely with Each Other. That’s About to Change

Those readers who have dabbled with astronomical imaging will be familiar with the technique of taking multiple images and then stacking them together to improve the strength of the signal‚ yielding better images. Taking this technique further many research projects require date of the same object spanning longer time frames than a nights observing. This data is usually captured from different locations and under different conditions. The problem has been matching the observations across all these survey runs. Researchers have shared a new approach to calculate if separate images of the same object will yield additional signals or just generate useless noise. Usually the images that are combined in astronomical images are taken with the same telescope so the instrumentation that captures the data and the conditions are identical. To date‚ using multiple telescopes from different locations to capture the data to form one image is an unusual‚ if not impractical approach. A team of researchers from the John Hopkins Institute addressed the main problem of assessing images from sky surveys taken over many years from different telescope in different locations under different conditions. The challenge has been to match observations of the same objects and when the surveys are in close proximity this can be more challenging. Existing tools have been available to crossmatch data from various catalogs such as TopCat‚ CDS Match and Aspects but to date‚ these are sow and have had higher than wished for failure rates. The team has developed a new data science approach known catchily as ‘mixed integer quadratically constrained programming’ or MIQCP for short that centres around assigning a score to each pair of observations from different observing runs from different surveys. The assigned score measures the likelihood that the observations were of the same object and the score increases as the observations are closer and decreases if further apart. Using their new technique they are able to take observations from different surveys and match objects to remove the task of sorting through all possible pairings. Not only does it speed up the matching process but it also allows for handling large sets of data. In tests‚ the results were very promising. Previous approaches were still fast but did not allow for all possible matches limiting likelihood of success‚ something vastly improved in this new technique. The team emphasise that the surveys are key to understanding the many mechanisms across the Universe‚ not only at the macro scale but also at the particle level. Their new technique opens up new opportunities for processing image data and the team are going to further enhance the method to handle larger datasets. Already the team can handle up to 100 catalogs‚ an improvement on the current 10 to 20 using existing methods.  Source : Groundbreaking method to match celestial objects across telescopes  The post Telescopes Didn’t Always Play Nicely with Each Other. Biden’s Education Secretary Butchers Famous Reagan Quote‚ Demonstrating Why Americans Fear Government ‘Help’

In the future‚ when I think about the textbook definition of America’s failed pseudo-elite‚ I’ll think of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona. In a Nov. 8 speech to Western state governors in Wyoming that was unearthed Monday‚ Cardona delivered this line about delivering technical assistance to states. “As‚ I think it was President Reagan‚ said—‘We’re from the government‚ we’re here to help‚’” he said. In case you don’t believe me‚ here’s a clip of the quote. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona just said with a completely straight face "I think it was President Reagan who said‚ 'We're from the government. We're here to help.’” pic.twitter.com/quRgs9nb7A— Greg Price (@greg_price11) November 27‚ 2023 That’s certainly not what Ronald Reagan said. The original‚ famous line comes from a 1986 press conference about agricultural policies in which Reagan said: “I’ve always felt the nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the government‚ and I’m here to help.” Of course‚ Reagan was channeling the strong belief of many Americans at the time that the federal government had become too big and too intrusive‚ and was mostly incompetent at delivering solutions to the problems of American society. For those who know almost anything about the 40th president‚ it would be unthinkable to construe the Gipper’s ethos as one in which he suggests that the government is the first answer to our problems. Reagan wasn’t a huge fan of the Department of Education in his own day. He’d likely be even more horrified by the Department of Education in our day‚ since it is trying to force “gender- affirming care” on to schools around the country. On social media‚ Cardona was ruthlessly and appropriately mocked for the bastardized quote. It was quite a schooling. The Federalist’s Mollie Hemmingway called the misquote “chef’s kiss perfect.” I actually find it chef's kiss perfect that the Education Secretary is this ignorant of history. https://t.co/3x4TUOqprv— Mollie (@MZHemingway) November 27‚ 2023 Journalist T. Becket Adams called Cardona’s version of the Reagan quote “too on-the-nose even for absurdist fiction.” The "education secretary" misstating a well-known quote regarding bureaucratic incompetence is too on-the-nose even for absurdist fiction. Any good editor would send it back and say‚ "Too much." https://t.co/Q0VQIfR8nR— T. Becket Adams (@BecketAdams) November 27‚ 2023 David Marcus‚ another journalist‚ pointed out that one must be entirely detached from conservative ideas to use this quote in the context Cardona did. Imagine how little exposure to conservative ideas one would have to have while garnering various college degrees to possibly make this mistake. https://t.co/L2DG1Mr4Y8— David Marcus (@BlueBoxDave) November 27‚ 2023 I have a low view of our current crop of Biden administration officials‚ but this is surely one of the dumbest lines I’ve heard from that crew. Even the reliably liberal “fact-checking” website‚ Snopes‚ couldn’t quite twist Cardona’s statement into a half-truth. “Political pundits accused [Cardona] of ‘butchering’ or ‘misappropriating’ the quote‚ which is fair to say he did‚” Snopes noted. No kidding. Under the most charitable interpretation of Cardona’s statement being a botched joke‚ it’s worth asking whether it’s wise to couch the Biden administration’s policies in a quotation from Reagan intended to point out the incompetence of government. This moment is a good rejoinder to those who insist that the Department of Education is essential for quality education in this country. Has American education really improved since the department was created in 1980? What does it say that the man who now leads it seems to be lacking in a basic understanding of history? Whatever Cardona’s reasoning for botching the Reagan quote‚ it is an excellent illustration of the shallowness of our nation’s overcredentialed ruling class. Lacking both wisdom and a real education‚ they instead thrive on bland ideological conformity that stifles independent thought and elevates mediocrities. America has had plenty of corrupt‚ incompetent‚ sinister‚ and downright crazy politicians and government officials in the past. But never before in our history have we had such uniform incompetence and ignorance embedded in positions of power. Speaking of history‚ I’d say our country’s rulers should probably learn some of it before eagerly joining the mob in tearing our history down. Let’s say you buy into the progressive-era ethos of replacing constitutionally limited government with an empowered‚ educated elite. How can one look at our current system and conclude that trading in America’s long tradition of self-government ushered in the rule of wise philosopher- bureaucrats? I imagine even Woodrow Wilson would be horrified by the people who now have such power over our lives. This problem isn’t just about Cardona or the Biden administration. It’s about the current failures of Western civilization and the United States. When we think of the large and long-term failures of our government‚ when we think of the frayed and failing domestic institutions that have lost the trust of the American people‚ we should consider that our problem is not a few clowns in high places. The problem is an entire elite ecosystem that rewards the wrong values‚ that fails to develop the thinkers and leaders capable of leading a great society. Our leaders know little about where we came from and less about where we are going. Maybe one of the many reasons the leaders of our elite institutions stood by and watched‚ or outright cheered‚ when the mob came for the statues of our great men is that toppling monuments relieved them of embarrassing comparisons.
