Comedian Bill Maher sparred with actress Sandra Bernhard over the rise of anti-Semitism in America — and where it comes from — during a recent episode of Maher’s “Club Random” podcast. Bernhard, who is Jewish, said that she did not feel oppressed in any way — and then argued that if there was a problem with anti-semitism in America, it was certainly coming only from the far-Right. Maher immediately rebutted her claims. But then she pivoted to the Hamas terror attacks on Israel last October 7, and claimed that since then, people around her had “suddenly” embraced their Judaism. “I like being Jewish. I go to Shabbat, I do my thing. But everybody’s suddenly like, ‘I’m Jewish, and I’m being [persecuted].’ I don’t feel persecuted,”  Bernhard explained. The left-wing is even worse.” “What? How so?” Bernhard asked. “That is coming down from elite colleges who see everything only through a racial lens. They are stupid. They don’t know history. They think everything is about colonizers and racists, and how awful America is,” Maher explained. “And America has done some bad things, but to drag Israel into this as the stand-in for every bad thing white people ever did — this is not any more complicated to most of these college kids than the Palestinians are brown and poor and the Israelis are rich and white.” “None of this jives with the facts,” he concluded.

A volcano in southwestern Iceland erupted on Wednesday, prompting an evacuation order for around 800 tourists staying at nearby hotels and resorts. The latest activity marks the fifth time the volcano has erupted since December. On Wednesday afternoon, the volcano began spewing lava from a fissure in the Sundhnjukar mountain ridge. Lava spouts fired as high as 150 feet into the air, according to The New York Times. The eruption prompted the evacuation of hundreds of tourists staying at nearby hotels, including at Iceland’s famous Blue Lagoon, a popular geothermal spa. Nearly 800 guests in the area received a text on Wednesday that said, “Evacuate, Evacuate!” as sirens, installed in February, began to sound over the volcanic activity. A message posted on the Blue Lagoon’s website announced that the spa will be closed until at least Friday. “Due to a volcanic eruption that commenced in Sundhnúksgígar on May 29, we took the precautionary measure of evacuating and temporarily closing all our operational units. We have made the decision to extend the closure throughout May 31, at which time the situation will be reassessed,” the message says. The volcanic activity has repeatedly threatened Grindavík, a small fishing town home to about 3,000 people, while barricades erected to protect the town have directed lava flows away from buildings. The town, located about 30 miles southwest of the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik, was evacuated months ago when eruptions began. “Lava is flowing outside the defense walls at Grindavík in several places, and lava is also starting to flow outside the walls at Svartsengi,” Víðir Reynisson from Iceland’s Civil Defense said, according to CNN. “The houses in the west and farthest part of the town would have gone under the lava if it weren’t for the defensive walls, but they are still standing and defending,” Reynisson added. The Mayor of West Hollywood, John M. Erickson, tried and failed miserably to explain the problem with epidemic “racialized” and “gendered architecture” in his city. In a hilarious clip posted on X from The Free Press, a reporter asked Erickson to explain a discussion brought up at a recent city council hearing when members expressed their feelings about this kind of space in the city. The mayor was asked to explain “racialized space in architecture” and he replied, by repeating the question and adding “well, it’s how do you understand gendered space in architecture.” The reporter then pressed him to explain “gendered space,” and the mayor replied: “Well there’s actually several great books about it. When you look at architecture or building or zoning codes they all play into the same space in which how do we create an open an environment — open and inviting environment for all communities.” The reporter then tried once again to get Erickson to explain what he meant and the Mayor delivered another word salad, reminiscent of something Vice President Kamala Harris would say at such an event. These are all questions that we are looking at when we look at cities and how they’re built these days.” The reporter gave it one more try asking the mayor how a “transportation hub” could be “unfriendly to men or to women,” and Erickson replied, “I mean, don’t you already know the answer to that question?” This back and forth continued with Erickson talking about spaces that don’t have a shelter from the weather or proper lighting or a bench or open spaces, completely failing to provide what “racialized spaces” or “gendered spaces in architecture” were despite the reporter’s numerous attempts at getting a straight answer. At one point, the reporter pointed to the building behind them, the West Hollywood Library, and asked the mayor what was “racialized or gendered” about the library. Erickson replied, “well, it’s not anymore. It’s brand new. So, I think this space is more inviting to — to one that was just over there [pointing] Don’t you?”
