Stefanik Calls House Republicans ‘The Last Line Of Defense’ Amid Border Clash With Biden Admin

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) declared on Sunday that House Republicans are “the last line of defense” against the Biden administration as they move toward impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over the border crisis. The lawmaker‚ who is the GOP conference chairwoman and widely considered a potential VP pick for former President Donald Trump‚ made the comments during an appearance on Fox News after the Homeland Security Committee unveiled two articles of impeachment for consideration. “This is very important as House Republicans are the last line of defense‚ and we are holding the Biden administration and Joe Biden accountable for the catastrophe at our southern border‚” Stefanik said on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures” with anchor Maria Bartiromo. WATCH: I joined @MariaBartiromo on @SundayFutures to discuss the @HomelandGOP's articles of impeachment against @SecMayorkas for willfully and systemically refusing to comply with federal immigration laws‚ the #BidenBorderCrisis‚ the @HouseGOP's impeachment inquiry into Joe… pic.twitter.com/X85pLmLyVA — Rep. Elise Stefanik (@RepStefanik) January 28‚ 2024 “Our committee chair‚ Mark Green of Homeland Security‚ has done a tremendous job and has shown to the American people that there has been a willful and refusal to comply with the law and an abuse of power in the position as Secretary of Homeland Security‚” Stefanik said. “You have a wide-open border. It is the number one issue for Americans across the country. And it’s not just the border states‚ Maria‚ who are impacted. It’s my home state of New York as well. Every state is a border state‚” she added. The first article introduced on Sunday says Mayorkas has “willfully and systemically refused to comply with Federal immigration laws‚” and the second claims the secretary “breached the public trust” by making false statements and “knowingly obstructed lawful oversight” of the Department of Homeland Security. While Republicans have raised concerns about millions of people crossing the southern border — including some on the terrorist watchlist — and the trafficking of deadly fentanyl‚ Democrats and the Homeland Security Department have criticized the impeachment effort as a “sham” that violates the U.S. Constitution. CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP Stefanik said she thinks it is “telling” that Democrats “are refusing to hold” President Joe Biden “accountable for this border crisis that Joe Biden and his Cabinet have created.” The congresswoman also called out New York Governor Kathy Hochul‚ a Democrat who has sought federal help in dealing with a surge in migrants amid “sanctuary” policies that aim to limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement and an increase in northern border crossings. Hochul is not one of the governors who are backing Texas in a standoff against the Biden administration to secure its border while she is “begging for relief despite the fact that New York is a sanctuary state and New York City is a sanctuary city where Democrats rolled out the red carpet for illegals‚” Stefanik said.

Senate Negotiators Wrapping Up Border Deal‚ Push Back On ‘Internet Rumors’

A top Senate negotiator working to reach an agreement coupling border security reforms with aid for U.S. allies‚ such as Ukraine and Israel‚ said on Sunday the deal could be up for consideration on the Senate floor this week. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) told CNN that lawmakers are “finishing the text right now” but warned that the “bipartisan deal” may be in jeopardy if Republicans “listen to” former President Donald Trump and reject the compromise that is backed by the Biden administration. “I am hopeful that we will still have enough Republicans in the Senate who want to fix the problem at the border‚ rather than just do Donald Trump’s bidding‚ but we will see over the next 24 to 48 hours whether that’s true‚” Murphy said. I went on @CNNSOTU this morning to talk about the bipartisan immigration bill and how it will better manage the flow of people at our southern border. We should pass this bill despite Donald Trump’s desire to keep chaos at the border because it helps him politically. pic.twitter.com/7inviqO4rH — Chris Murphy 🟧 (@ChrisMurphyCT) January 28‚ 2024 Trump‚ who is the frontrunner in the 2024 GOP presidential contest after winning the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary‚ has discouraged compromise in the talks that seek to implement immigration reforms and answer President Joe Biden’s request last year for roughly $106 billion in supplemental funds to spend on U.S. allies — including Ukraine‚ Israel‚ and Taiwan — as well as border security and humanitarian assistance. “I do not think we should do a Border Deal‚ at all‚ unless we get EVERYTHING needed to shut down the INVASION of Millions &; Millions of people‚ many from parts unknown‚ into our once great‚ but soon to be great again‚ Country!” he said in a post to Truth Social this month. Purported details of the not-yet-released deal have emerged over the past couple of weeks. One alleged part that has drawn blowback from Republicans is a section that Fox News reported would establish a threshold of a seven-day rolling average exceeding 5‚000 encounters a day to trigger a Title 42-like authority to quickly remove migrants at the border. “This bill normalizes 5‚000 people a day coming in‚ 5‚000 people a day is over 1.8 million a year. That’s called an invasion‚” said Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX). “By the way‚ under [President] Joe Biden‚ we’ve had 9.6 million. So‚ the great Republican compromise is we’re for two-thirds of Joe Biden’s open borders. We’ll let in 6 million instead of 9 million. This makes utterly no sense.” Sen. James Lankford (R-OK)‚ who has been working with Murphy to come up with a compromise deal‚ pushed back on the critique from Cruz when asked to confirm whether the 5‚000 encounters threshold was part of the agreement‚ contending that the section in question is being misinterpreted. Sen. Lankford denies the media reports that the Senate border bill allows up to 5‚000 illegal immigrants per day into the U.S.‚ calling it "internet rumors." "This bill focuses on getting us to zero illegal crossings a day…This is the most misunderstood section…" pic.twitter.com/6u4Ro9HJ6j — Julio Rosas (@Julio_Rosas11) January 28‚ 2024 “Right now‚ there’s internet rumors. It’s all that people are running. It would be absolutely absurd for me to agree to 5‚000 people a day‚” he said on “Fox News Sunday” with anchor Shannon Bream‚ contending that the section is designed to shut down the border if there is a “rush of people” approaching. CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP “This bill focuses on getting us to zero illegal crossings a day. There’s no amnesty. It increases the number of Border Patrol agents and it increases asylum officers. It increases detention beds so we can quickly detain and then deport individuals‚” he added. “It ends catch-and-release. It focuses on additional deportation flights out. It changes our asylum process so that people can get a fast asylum screening at a higher standard and then get returned back to their home country.” Lankford also dismissed critics who claim the deal would still allow many people into the country while giving Biden a political victory that he could brag about in an election year. Fox: Why give Biden this in an election year? He gets to take a victory lap. Sen. James Lankford: Republicans 4 months ago would not give funding for Ukraine‚ Israel‚ &; the border bc we demanded changes in policy… and now…they're like‚ "just kidding".pic.twitter.com/cqEe7mAywp — The Intellectualist (@highbrow_nobrow) January 28‚ 2024 “It is interesting: Republicans‚ four months ago‚ would not give funding for Ukraine‚ for Israel‚ and for our southern border because we demanded changes in policy. So‚ we actually locked arms together and said‚ ‘We’re not going to give money for this. We want a change in law‚'” Lanford said. “And now‚ it’s interesting‚ a few months later‚ when we’re finally getting to the end‚ they’re like‚ ‘Oh‚ just kidding‚ I actually don’t want a change in law because of the presidential election year.’ We all have an oath to the Constitution and we have a commitment to say we’re going to do whatever we can to be able to secure the border.”

U.S. Senators Push For Direct Military Response Against Iran After U.S. Soldiers Killed In Terror Attack

U.S. Senators pushed for direct military action against Iran on Sunday after news broke that at least three U.S. soldiers were killed in a terrorist attack carried out by an Iranian-backed terrorist group. U.S. Central Command said in a statement that “three U.S. service members were killed and 25 injured from a one-way attack [Unmanned Aircraft System] that impacted at a base in northeast Jordan‚ near the Syria border.” Subsequent reporting said that more than 30 U.S. soldiers were injured in the attack. President Joe Biden said in a separate statement that the attack was “carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq.” There was a bipartisan show of support among U.S. senators for the Biden administration to hold Iran directly responsible. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was the most direct in stating what he believes the U.S. should do in response. “I am calling on the Biden Administration to strike targets of significance inside Iran‚ not only as reprisal for the killing of our forces‚ but as deterrence against future aggression‚” he said‚ later adding: “Hit Iran now. Hit them hard.” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said that Biden’s weakness was “again measured in American lives.” “We cannot afford to keep responding to this violent aggression with hesitation and half-measures‚” he said. “The entire world now watches for signs that the President is finally prepared to exercise American strength to compel Iran to change its behavior. Our enemies are emboldened. And they will remain so until the United States imposes serious‚ crippling costs – not only on front-line terrorist proxies‚ but on their Iranian sponsors who wear American blood as a badge of honor.” “Target Tehran‚” said Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX)‚ adding that he specifically wanted to see the U.S. target the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the IRGC’s Quds Force (IRGC-QF). “Joe Biden emboldened Iran for years by tolerating attacks on our troops‚ bribing the ayatollahs with billions of dollars‚ and appeasing them to no end‚” said Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR). “He left our troops as sitting ducks and now three are dead and dozens wounded‚ sadly as I’ve predicted would happen for months. The only answer to these attacks must be devastating military retaliation against Iran’s terrorist forces‚ both in Iran and across the Middle East.” “Anything less will confirm Joe Biden as a coward unworthy of being commander-in-chief‚” Cotton added. Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) posted on X that “Iran must be held accountable.” “Yesterday’s deadly attack by Iran-backed militants on U.S. troops in Jordan is reprehensible – and part of a broader pattern of Tehran-enabled aggression across the region‚” said Michael Bennet (D-CO). “We must work with our allies and partners to counter Iran’s malign influence.” Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) said that Iran was “blatantly questioning U.S. strength” and that “it must end.” “This is what happens when an administration abandons peace through strength in favor of appeasing the largest state sponsor of terror in the world‚” said Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK). “The White House must take immediate action‚ and in doing so‚ send a clear message to Iran: those who target our brave men and women in uniform will pay the ultimate price.” Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) said that she would work to “ensure that those responsible for attacks on our military are held accountable.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP “It’s time to reestablish deterrence against Iran with a decisive response to these unacceptable strikes‚” said Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV). “It is time to act with purpose and resolve in response to attacks that have tragically taken the lives of American service members and injured scores more‚” said Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS). “We must respond to these repeated attacks by Iran &; its proxies by striking directly against Iranian targets &; its leadership. The Biden administration’s responses thus far have only invited more attacks. It is time to act swiftly and decisively for the whole world to see.” Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) said “enough is enough” and that it was “time for clear and decisive action‚ and Iran must be held accountable for the malign activities of its proxies.” “The President needs to order a clear‚ lethal and overwhelming response that demonstrates to Iran and to the world that whoever targets our men and women in uniform—or supports these attacks—will face the full might of the U.S. military‚” said Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-AK). “Will Pres Biden finally take decisive action against Iran???” Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) posted on X. Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) wrote: “Mr. President‚ it is far past time Iran paid the price for its actions.”
