Meet Bowie‚ The Super Rare Half-Male‚ Half-Female‚ Half-Blue‚ Half-Orange Lobster

Bowie might just be the rarest lobster in the North Atlantic‚ if not the world. This special specimen is split directly down the middle‚ with its left side being a vibrant blue color and its right being a typical orange color. Not only that‚ but it’s also an example of a bilateral gynandromorph: half-female and half-male‚ split perfectly down the animal’s midline. The ultra-rare lobster was recently caught by a friend of Jacob Knowles‚ a fifth-generation lobster fisherman in Maine‚ who has a wildly successful TikTok and Instagram channels showcasing the surprisingly fascinating world of catching lobsters. It’s estimated that blue lobsters are one in 2 million‚ and bi-colored ones are one in 50 million‚ which makes Bowie unbelievably rare when you consider that it is also a bilateral gynandromorph."This is the coolest lobster I've ever seen. Not only is it split 50/50 down its back‚ blue and normal‚ but if you look underneath it's actually half-male and half-female. The blue side is a male‚ the normal side is female‚" Jacob said in a video."This lobster‚ realistically‚ is the rarest lobster in the Gulf of Maine‚" he added in another video.              IFLScience is not responsible for content shared from external sites.Jacob asked his followers what they should name the fabulously flamboyant lobster and they aptly voted for “Bowie” in homage to the late‚ great music icon David Bowie‚ possibly due to his challening of gender norms or even due to the misconception he had different colored eyes (he actually had anisocoria‚ meaning one pupil is bigger than the other). Other suggestions included Two-Face‚ Icy Hot‚ Lobstery McLobsterface‚ and Leonardo Da Pinchy.Bilateral gynandromorphism is when the two halves of the body express different sexual characteristics. It’s a rare condition‚ but one that has been documented in dozens of species‚ from birds such as the rose-breasted grosbeak and northern cardinal birds to insects like nocturnal bees and stick insects.Biological sex is determined by the combination of sex chromosomes. For example‚ in humans and some other species‚ males have an X and a Y chromosome‚ while females have two X chromosomes‚ though this isn't the extent of combinations. (In other animals‚ including insects and birds‚ sex is determined by the combination of Z and W chromosomes‚ but we'll stick to X and Y in this explanation for simplicity's sake). Scientists believe the mechanisms behind bilateral gynandromorphism occur during the very early stages of development. As the organism begins to grow‚ a male XY cell will undergo mitosis and duplicate its chromosomes‚ becoming XXYY‚ before dividing into two XY cells. In gynandromorphs‚ however‚ this process doesn’t go as planned. Instead of dividing into two XY cells‚ the cell accidentally divides into an X cell and an XYY cell. If this glitch occurs in the earliest stages of development‚ it can result in a large portion of the cells being both X and XYY.View this post on InstagramA post shared by Jacob Knowles (@jknowles831) IFLScience is not responsible for content shared from external sites.Bowie is very much living their best life. After deciding not to return the lobster to the sea‚ Jacob and the team temporarily held them in a cage at the harbor. However‚ an unexpected downpour of rain meant the bay became diluted with freshwater‚ which isn’t good news for a creature used to seawater.Fortunately‚ the Oceanarium and Education Center in Bar Harbour came to the rescue‚ providing Bowie with a tank and helping Jacob to set it up. The lobster seems to be settling in pretty well‚ happily munching down herring and quietly scuttling around their brand new tank. You can continue to follow Bowie’s journey on Jacob’s TikTok.

NBC's Kristen Welker Presses DeSantis SIX Times to Condemn Trump 'Vermin' Talk

NBC's Kristen Welker Presses DeSantis SIX Times to Condemn Trump 'Vermin' Talk

On Sunday‚ NBC Meet the Press host Kristen Welker displayed an interview taped on Saturday with Gov. Ron DeSantis. She repeatedly demanded the candidate denounce Donald Trump for his use of the term "vermin" to describe communists‚ fascists‚ and "radical left thugs" in America. She asked six times to try and force an answer‚ implying Trump sounded like a Nazi. DeSantis said he wasn't playing the media game on this. Welker began the interview by repeatedly pressing DeSantis on staying in the race‚ like she was pressuring him to get out. If these networks are so concerned with Donald Trump‚ why would they press Trump's opponents to get out of the primaries before anyone has voted? Welker began the V-talk with this: "You bring up former President Trump. So‚ let me ask you about the GOP front-runner. Mr. Trump is campaigning on the idea of retribution. He's promising to jail his political enemies‚ if he's reelected. He's also referred to some of his political opponents as 'vermin‚' language that people‚ frankly‚ across the political spectrum‚ say hearkens back to Nazi Germany. Do you think that kind of language is presidential?" DeSantis said "the issue is is why are you running? Are you running for your personal issues? Are you running for the American people's issues? And I'm running for the American people's issues." He said Trump shouldn't be running on revenge‚ but running to serve‚ and he also talked about ending weaponization of the government‚ starting with the Justice Department. Welker turned her volume knob to Eleven: WELKER: Governor‚ as you know‚ DOJ officials would reject the idea that it has been weaponized. But let me ask you about my original question‚ the use of the word “vermin." Are you comfortable with that term? [2] DeSANTIS: But‚ Kristen‚ just to be clear -- WELKER: But are you comfortable with that term‚ Governor? [3] DeSANTIS: Let me – let me just say on the DOJ – Well‚ first of all‚ I'm responsible for my – what I say. And I say things differently. But on the DOJ and the FBI -- WELKER: But are you comfortable with that term? [4] DeSANTIS: I mean‚ we have seen -- WELKER: Just on my question‚ though‚ Governor -- DeSANTIS: Excuse me. What I'm not – what I’m not comfortable with is FBI agents going after parents going to school board meetings. I'm not comfortable with DOJ‚ FBI working with tech companies to censor dissent... The candidate is trying to make his case about the Biden DOJ‚ but Welker thinks she has to keep pounding away like she's Chuck Todd:  WELKER:So do you condemn the use of the word “vermin?” [5] DeSANTIS: Don't shoot yourself in the foot. Be focused. Be disciplined. WELKER: Do you condemn the use of the word “vermin‚" then? [6] DeSANTIS: I don't use the term. But what I don't do is play the media's game‚ where I'm asked to referee other people. He's responsible for his words. He's responsible for his conduct. I'm responsible for mine. After Welker's performance‚ she turned to her panel of pundits for their analysis. Stephen Hayes of The Dispatch hit DeSantis for "how small he felt in response to those questions." Tim Alberta of The Atlantic said "He seemed defensive‚ jumpy in that interview. He almost gives the vibe of a guy who sort of knows that the end could be near."

The right embraces the idolatry of identity politics

The right embraces the idolatry of identity politics

It was bound to happen‚ but it’s still sad — and ominous — to see. The right was flirting with going down this road long before Donald Trump ever came down the escalator to announce his presidential run. Remember when government mandates were terrible‚ provided Barack Obama did them‚ but then we had to “save America” by electing Mitt Romney? Mitt Romney‚ also known as the guy who gave Obama his worst idea (Romneycare) before he even had it (Obamacare)? As the whole culture is swallowed in the black hole of a Judges-esque amoral abyss‚ or maybe even a Romans 1 judgment‚ it is inevitable that an enterprise — politics — that even under the best of cultural conditions can become a hive of scum and villainy wouldn’t be able to hold the line when there is no plumb line. The Democrats long ago created a political party built not on shared principles but on shared association. If you were a holy fire-breathing black pastor‚ you voted for the same candidates as the Rainbow Jihad. Not because of any shared principle‚ mind you‚ but out of recognition that you needed to share an association to gain the political power and access you believed were necessary to reward the faction you represent. This explains why the likes of Thomas Sowell stopped being black and Dave Rubin stopped being gay. They both dared to claim identities copyrighted by Democrats without associating with them. Hence‚ rich white suburban kids are now free to lecture Sowell on institutional racism‚ and progressive monogamous heterosexuals feel entitled to quote Harvey Milk to Rubin. But such idolatries tend to swing both ways. This is also how we got black and brown voters to vote for an amendment in California‚ of all places‚ defending the biblical definition of marriage on the same day in 2008 that those same voters gave record support to Obama for president. Proposition 8 received more than 7 million votes — more than any Republican has ever received in Golden State history. That wouldn’t have happened without non-white Democrats crossing over to support the measure. Never forget‚ the Lord chastens those He loves. So if there is a level of idolatry being rewarded that God doesn’t seem to be pruning‚ that is not a blessing. In other words‚ we got people who would never vote for John McCain for president to support a ballot initiative that McCain himself thought was too right-wing. Make it make sense. You can't. Idolatry makes fools of us all. And so those voters who overwhelmingly backed traditional marriage ushered into the White House the very same regime that would become the first to ever adorn that once venerable building in the colors of the Rainbow Jihad. Long after their votes for Proposition 8 and the traditional family were vanquished by the U.S. Supreme Court‚ their contradictory votes for the Sodom and Gomorrah candidate would remain steadfast. Such is life when you succumb to the idolatry of identity politics. Identity politics‚ like all other forms of godlessness‚ is never satiated. It behaves like a swarm of locusts. Once unleashed‚ it will devour its intended target first. But with the Democrats’ fields now devoid of crops for the locusts to consume‚ they don’t just fly away content with their gizzards full. These are locusts‚ after all. All they know is consumption. So the swarm recognized that there was a whole other field to plow through. And yes‚ there had been attempts to do so previously. But they were usually met with resistance once noticed. Yet swarms are persistent creatures. They will test your resolve‚ and nothing weakens one’s resolve more than desperation — whether that desperation’s source be craven (greed/ambition) or sincere (loss of your way of life). And thus the Republican Party is now on the precipice of becoming an identity-based party itself. Maybe it’s already there. What did new Speaker of the House Mike “Biblical Worldview” Johnson (R-La.) do just before he betrayed the base on the budget as his first official act? He went on national TV and enthusiastically endorsed Donald Trump for president. Why? Because he’s learned the game. If he affirms Trump‚ the issues no longer matter. Trump is the only issue. Forever War Inc. globalist Lindsey “Grahamnesty” Graham (R-S.C.) has learned the same lesson. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.)‚ the only member of House Republican leadership to vote to codify the destruction of marriage into federal law‚ learned it‚ too. Female impersonator Bruce Jenner is now a coveted Fox News contributor because he learned it as well. How can you possibly assemble a coalition of an alleged biblical worldview guy‚ a psychologically damaged transvestite‚ a forever-war globalist‚ and someone who would permit the federal government to declare war on the same white evangelicals that vote for you in droves? You cannot. Not if you have any shared principles. God's word is clear: A house divided against itself cannot stand. This can only be done via the abandonment of principle and the adoption of a new paradigm based on shared association. Otherwise known as identity politics. So far in the 2024 presidential primary‚ Trump has told us we can’t be pro-life any more‚ admitted he’s only talking tough on the debt now because he’s not in office‚ isn’t sure whether Jeffrey Epstein killed himself‚ doesn’t know if a man can become a woman‚ says he’d arm Ukraine even more than Biden already has‚ and just last week embraced a Black Lives Matter activist because he said nice things about him. Over the years‚ these were all things we allegedly felt very strongly about as a movement. But according to “muh polls‚” we don’t feel strongly about anything more than we feel about Trump. Therefore‚ he is entitled to violate all of our orthodoxies and we are not permitted to hold him accountable should we want to remain in shared association.Right before I sat down to write this‚ a pastor of my acquaintance — a man who participated in a closed-door meeting earlier this year with several other Christian leaders concerned about the godless drift in our culture — called me out on social media for pointing out Trump’s mounting heterodoxies. But it wasn’t to thank me for demanding that Trump better represent our principles. It was to scold me for “attacking” Trump by pointing these things out. “We’re leading a movement back to God‚” he told me. Which is what ultimately inspired me to write all of this. Maybe this is the best we can do in our current sad spiritual state. For certain‚ the Trump presidency was very good before he permitted COVID-19 to wreck his presidency and our country. As much as his fundamental flaws annoy me‚ and even more his unwillingness to confront or acknowledge them‚ I sincerely wish Trump were still president today. The country was better off with him in the White House. If your vote in this primary simply comes down to that‚ I understand. On that‚ we agree. We were better off‚ and we have a shared principle. But I tremble every time I search the Scriptures for “that’s the best we can do” and come up empty. God doesn't seem to accept a certain level of idolatry. He hates it‚ in fact. He will prune it from within us‚ even painfully so‚ for the good of His children. Never forget‚ the Lord chastens those He loves. So‚ if there is a level of idolatry being rewarded that God doesn’t seem to be pruning‚ that is not a blessing. Quite the opposite.

Don’t be fooled: RFK Jr. is no conservative

A recent Quinnipiac University survey of registered voters revealed that Robert F. Kennedy Jr.‚ who is now running for president as an independent‚ has amassed an astonishing amount of support. If Kennedy can maintain or even build upon that momentum prior to Election Day‚ his candidacy could prove to be a critical factor in the 2024 election. According to Quinnipiac’s poll‚ in a hypothetical three-way race featuring Joe Biden‚ Donald Trump‚ and Kennedy‚ RFK Jr. would receive 22% support‚ compared to 39% for Biden and 36% for former President Trump. Most importantly‚ Quinnipiac found that Kennedy would take more voters away from Trump than he would from Biden‚ a remarkable scenario considering that Kennedy was officially running for the Democratic Party’s nomination until October. Support for Kennedy from Republicans and conservative-leaning independents is due primarily to his outspoken criticism of COVID-19 mandates and vaccines‚ as well as his anti-establishment rhetoric and unique‚ libertarian-leaning views on issues such as drug possession. Kennedy has‚ on occasion‚ railed against establishment politicians‚ Davos institutions‚ and the corruption of large corporations — all of which plays well with many conservative and libertarian voters. “If you go down the checklist of all the things that my father believed in‚ Robert Kennedy‚ and my uncle‚ John Kennedy‚ believed in‚ I would check every one of those boxes‚” RFK Jr. said. But a careful review of Kennedy’s entire policy platform and many of his past statements shows clearly that although he certainly isn’t your typical run-of-the-mill establishment Democrat‚ he is hardly a friend of the conservative or libertarian movements. In fact‚ on many issues‚ Kennedy is far more progressive than Joe Biden. The following is a brief summary of some of Kennedy’s most important anti-conservative policy positions‚ organized by topic. Economics Kennedy’s economic agenda is unquestionably aligned with left-wing values. RFK Jr. supports increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour‚ one of Senator Bernie Sanders’ longtime policy objectives. Kennedy also supports expanding the power of unions‚ increasing “regulatory scrutiny” on large businesses‚ and redirecting billions of dollars in military and defense spending toward social programs. His website also promises to “break up ‘too-big-to-fail’ banks and monopolies‚ and when crisis strikes‚ bail out the homeowners‚ debtors‚ and small businesses instead” — a populist position but not a conservative policy. Expanding government Kennedy has repeatedly called for new government social programs‚ including many that are in line with the Democratic Party’s most socialistic wing. For example‚ Kennedy proposes cutting interest rates for student loans to zero‚ effectively shifting many of the costs associated with college lending to taxpayers‚ and he has also called for a program to “expand free childcare to millions of families.” He also wants to establish a government program that would limit mortgage rates for many families to 3%‚ which he plans to pay for by creating a gigantic new federal program financed by selling Treasury bills. “You know‚ if you have a rich uncle who will co-sign your mortgage‚ you get a much better rate because the bank is basing your interest rate not on your lousy credit score but on your rich uncle’s high credit rating‚” Kennedy explained in a September 2023 C-SPAN interview. “So I’m going to give everybody a rich uncle‚ which is Uncle Sam.” Climate change Kennedy‚ a former environmental lawyer and activist‚ has a long history of advocating for left-wing climate policies‚ many of which are included in his presidential campaign platform. For example‚ Kennedy proposes using the federal government to “incentivize the transition of industry to zero-waste cycles and clean energy sources‚ and forge agreements with other countries to implement these policies throughout the global supply chain.” He also wants to “protect wild lands from further development‚ by curbing mining‚ logging‚ oil drilling‚ and suburban sprawl‚” a plan that would undoubtedly increase the cost of housing‚ electricity‚ gasoline‚ and‚ by extension‚ nearly all consumer goods. Reason.com reports that in 2014‚ Kennedy authored an article for the far-left EcoWatch titled‚ “Jailing Climate Deniers‚” in which he argued that organizations that dare even to suggest climate change is not a crisis should be “candidates for corporate death.” Kennedy went on to list a number of organizations that could be worthy of “death‚” including public-policy think tanks like my employer‚ the Heartland Institute‚ as well as large oil and gas companies such as ExxonMobil. Kennedy has elsewhere said critics of climate alarmism should be “prosecuted for reckless endangerment” and that many energy companies are guilty of “treason” and should be treated “as traitors.” Abortion Regardless of where you stand on abortion‚ you’ll be disappointed by RFK Jr.’s record. At a campaign event in August‚ Kennedy told NBC he supported a 15-week federal abortion ban‚ a position that would be strongly divergent from most Democrats. Shortly thereafter‚ however‚ Kennedy’s campaign issued a statement claiming‚ “Mr. Kennedy’s position on abortion is that it is always the woman’s right to choose. He does not support legislation banning abortion.” That means within just 24 hours‚ it appears Kennedy went from promoting a 15-week abortion ban to supporting abortion rights up to the time a baby is born‚ a flip-flop almost unprecedented in scale. Kennedy’s own words It’s true that RFK Jr. has adopted conservative-aligned positions on limiting the government’s ability to spy on Americans‚ stopping the weaponization of federal agencies‚ and the COVID-19 lockdowns. But those and other right-leaning views do not overcome his numerous leftist policies‚ an assertion that Kennedy himself has firmly adopted. During a September appearance on C-SPAN‚ Kennedy insisted his policies were completely in line with the Democratic Party and progressivism. “If you go down the checklist of all the things that my father believed in‚ Robert Kennedy‚ and my uncle‚ John Kennedy‚ believed in‚ I would check every one of those boxes‚” he said. “They‚ you know‚ [were] classic progressive‚ liberal Democratic candidates.” I’m not sure I could put it any better myself.
