A “really important week” in peace talks is coming up after President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Vatican over the weekend amid the funeral for Pope Francis, according to the Trump administration’s top diplomat. Russia and Ukraine are “closer in general than they’ve been any time in the last three years” to reaching an end to their war, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet The Press,” although he conceded the two sides have not yet reached a resolution. This past week, Rubio told moderator Kristen Welker, “has really been about figuring out how close are these sides really, and are they close enough that this merits a continued investment of our time as a mediator in this regard.” Rubio said he thinks it would be “silly” to set a specific date for a peace agreement. “I can just tell you that almost 100 days into this presidency, the president has dedicated a tremendous amount of time and energy to this, and we think we brought the sides closer than they’ve been in a very long time,” he added. “But we’re not there yet, and it needs to start happening,” Rubio continued. “We need to start — I think this is going to be a very critical week. This week is going to be a really important week in which we have to make a determination about whether this is an endeavor that we want to continue to be involved in, or if it’s time to sort of focus on some other issues that are equally, if not more, important in some cases, but we want to see it happen. There are reasons to be optimistic, but there are reasons to be realistic, of course, as well. We’re close, but we’re not close enough.” The White House said the meeting at the Vatican was “very productive,” a sign of progress after an explosive confrontation between Trump and Zelensky at the White House earlier this year. Trump also criticized Russia for continuing to attack Ukraine. He suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin needs to be “dealt with differently” moving forward. All that happened after Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff traveled to Moscow on Friday to meet with Putin and discuss ending the war. One major point of contention has been territory. While Zelensky insisted that Ukraine will not “legally recognize” Russia’s occupation of Crimea, Trump said that Crimea will “stay with Russia.” In an interview on “Sunday Morning Futures,” National Security Advisor Mike Waltz emphasized both Russia and Ukraine need a desire to end the war for the years-long conflict to come to a close when anchor Maria Bartiromo asked him if Zelensky understands that he’s likely not going to get more land back. “There’s been a number of discussions of territory, of what they need to make sure that this war never continues, that it is permanent,” Waltz said. “We have talked to our European partners, who you saw the images of both Starmer from the United Kingdom and Macron from France, that Europe has to step up. I know that you have ambassador Whitaker, our new NATO ambassador, who’s fantastic coming on, on talking about how the Europeans need to take the lead in the future.” He added: “All of those things are key parts of the discussion with both Zelensky and with Putin. And next is to drive both sides to the table, but they both have to want it. And the president has expressed his frustrations in whether both sides genuinely want to end this war. But he is determined to have the United States of America and him — I will just say this: the current leader of NATO, who was here this week, said only President Trump could break the deadlock that we saw 100 days ago under the Biden administration. And he’s done just that, starting with his call with both Putin and Zelensky just a few months ago.” Uncertainty also rests with a rare earth minerals deal between the United States and Ukraine that has been discussed for months but has yet to be finalized. The agreement is “going to get done,” Waltz said. “The negotiators were working hard over the weekend. That is first and foremost on both [Treasury] Secretary Bessent and the president’s mind. A communications platform called Titanium Secure is positioning itself as a quantum-resistant defense against growing cyber threats from China and data harvesting by Big Tech companies. “We saw a need for conservatives to have their own platform where they could do several different things, and part of those was to secure communication and secure data,” said John Reese, founder and CEO of Titanium Secure. Reese, who who transitioned from dentistry to cybersecurity in 2019, spoke with The Daily Signal alongside the platform’s chief information officer, Michael Avari. Reese and Avari highlighted the urgency of quantum-resistant encryption, noting that Chinese cyber operations infiltrated at least eight U.S. telecommunication companies. They also pointed to growing concerns about cyber espionage and attacks on U.S. infrastructure, which could allow foreign adversaries to shut down a power plant or threaten Americans’ survival. “The FBI and others are now encouraging everybody to use an encrypted app,” Avari explained. Unlike free services such as WhatsApp and Telegram, Titanium Secure operates on a subscription model. It starts at $6 per month for individuals. “We don’t store any data. We don’t sell any data. We don’t share any data on anybody,” Reese stated, contrasting his platform with Meta-owned WhatsApp. Titanium Secure uses algorithms approved by the National Institute for Standards and Technology for post-quantum encryption. Avari said this level of encryption sets Titanium Secure apart from its competitors. “We are the most secure encryption available because it’s resistant to quantum computing, which is the next generation of computing,” Avari explained. “With quantum computing, the speed now matches that encryption. Bluesky, the social platform once meant to be a sanctuary for free expression, has started bending to government demands. Despite a loophole that still allows some users to slip through the cracks, the network’s decision to censor at the behest of Turkish authorities has ignited concerns about whether its foundation is as anti-censorship as promised. A report recently disclosed that Bluesky agreed to restrict 72 accounts in Turkey. Now, users in the country are cut off from these voices. Out of those, 59 accounts were censored under claims of protecting “national security and public order,” while an additional 13 accounts, along with at least one post, were hidden from view. For a platform that attracted many Turks escaping the heavy-handed censorship elsewhere, Bluesky’s move to comply with Turkish government pressure feels like a betrayal. Users are now questioning whether the platform’s promises of openness were ever genuine. The issue is Bluesky’s official app, which offers some user-level moderation settings but does not permit opting out of the company’s centralized censorship system. A significant part of that system involves geographic labelers, including a recently deployed Turkish-specific one that automatically hides targeted content inside the country. If you’re using Bluesky’s official app and the company decides to block content based on your location, you are stuck. There is no official way to view the censored accounts or posts. More: EU Censors Set Their Sights on Bluesky Nevertheless, the architecture underlying Bluesky offers an escape hatch — at least for now. Built on the AT Protocol, Bluesky supports a network of third-party apps, collectively called the Atmosphere, where moderation can be handled differently or even ignored. Because the censorship is applied at the client level through geographic labelers, and because the restricted accounts are not banned from Bluesky’s actual servers and relays, independent apps can still access them. Apps like Skeets, Ouranos, Deer.social, and Skywalker, which have not adopted geographic moderation labelers, provide ways for users in Turkey to reach content the official app blocks. However, this workaround is fragile. Most third-party developers have not intentionally resisted censorship. Rather, adding geographic labelers would require extra coding, and with their apps flying under the radar thanks to smaller user bases, developers see little immediate reason to comply. But if any of these apps were to grow large enough, they could easily become targets for government pressure — or risk being delisted from app stores like Apple’s if they refuse to enforce censorship demands. Welcomed by opponents of the multi-year Big Tech-government censorship collusion in the US, Meta’s decision to abandon its controversial “fact-checking” program is receiving criticism from others. Among them is Meta’s Oversight Board, which is also unhappy that the company is allowing more freedom to users of its platforms when it comes to discussing issues like gender identity and immigration. Announcing the changes earlier this year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted that the “moderation” system in place until that point had produced “too many mistakes and too much censorship.” The content was flagged, downranked, or removed, as were users if either censorship algorithms or third-party “fact-checkers” decided it contained “misinformation” or “hate speech” – and the criteria for this was heavily biased in favor of the former administration’s agendas. But looking back at the policy shift announced on January 7, the Board expressed its concern that Meta went about this “hastily, in a departure from the regular procedure, with no public information shared as to what, if any, prior human rights due diligence the company performed.” The Board decided to put the emphasis on “human rights” rather than free speech, in particular the handling of topics related to LGB and transgender issues. Meta’s policy now allows users to make allegations about mental illness or abnormality “when based on gender or sexual orientation.” This is essentially explained as a way to allow the discourse about transgenderism and homosexuality that is already happening in society, in political and religious contexts. But the Board thinks this may result in human rights violations and wants Meta to investigate whether that is happening, and to “update it” on the findings twice a year. Just how restrictive the rules around these issues have been is illustrated in the two cases the Board was considering – attempts to ban videos expressing views about the participation of transgender persons in sports and their “access” to bathrooms. Here the Board agreed with Meta that the videos should stay up as they “related to matters of public concern and would not incite likely and imminent violence or discrimination.” Other than making decisions regarding a total of 11 cases, the Board put together 17 non-binding policy recommendations for Meta, one of them being “improved” enforcement of anti-bullying rules, and clarifying “which hateful ideologies” will continue to be banned. Meta welcomed the decisions that allow for more free expression, and said it would respond to the Board – which it funds with $35 million each year – within two months. Brave has announced the open-sourcing of Cookiecrumbler, a tool designed for “smart” automatic detection of cookie consent notices on websites across the web by deploying open-source LLMs, the Brave Privacy Team announced. Other than detecting these notices, Cookiecrumbler also suggests fixes. Now developers behind the tool say they are looking at ways of including Cookiecrumbler in the Brave browser – but that this will happen once a full privacy review has been carried out. Being user-experience “unfriendly” – i.e., annoying – is the least of the problems with cookie consent pop-ups, that are supposed to empower users into choosing how and if they are tracked and profiled. But Brave says that the notices themselves can be harmful to privacy, citing research stating even when a user chooses to “reject all cookies” – many systems are supposed to ensure that they “still track people.” Since the privacy-oriented Brave browser blocks third-party tracking by default, the pop-ups become unnecessary there; however, the way they get blocked matters, since some implementations can result in breaking the functionality of web pages, especially when the blocker uses generic rules. Cookiecrumbler, on the other hand, aims to provide site-specific blocking across the internet and different locations and languages in which cookie consent notices appear – which is why LLMs are used in detection automation as a way to deal with the scale of the job. Those behind the tool also say that the low cost and efficiency of this approach allows for also using human reviewers, who look for false positives. Cookiecrumbler detects top websites by using publicly available lists and deploys a crawling script to determine if they use cookie consent notices. The resulting list of websites that do is then published in the tool’s new GitHub repository. Other than blocking trackers, Brave also by default blocks the notices. The difference with Cookiecrumbler built-in would be to do this more efficiently through automation, given the extent of the task, and allow detection of new and modified consent pop-ups. Cookiecrumbler developers say that since its launch at the Ad Filtering Dev Summit in 2024, the tool produces less breakage, and fewer false positives while expanding the number of languages and geographical coverage.
