University Of North Carolina Repeals DEI Mandates, Pledges To Focus On Institutional Neutrality

The leadership board that governs policies at the University of North Carolina voted on Thursday to repeal previous diversity, equity, and inclusion policies in favor of new neutrality focused guidelines.  The vote from the UNC System Board of Governors ended a policy that forced each of the 17 schools in the system to have a DEI officer and to monitor campus diversity. New policies say that the university is committed to “equality of opportunity in education and employment.” The new guidelines say that the university is committed to free speech, academic freedom, and ensuring equality of different viewpoints and people. “ The policy adds that “addressing the needs of individuals — requires that each be treated as an individual deserving of dignity and inclusion. The University shall continue to ensure that diverse persons of any background, from North Carolina and beyond, are invited, included, and treated equally.” “Non-discrimination, institutional neutrality, free expression, and academic freedom are all mutually reinforcing concepts and values,” UNC President Peter Hans said Thursday, according to the News and Observer. “We are here to serve all, not just those who agree with us. When these principles are faithfully held, they allow diversity in all forms to thrive.” “It’s good for college students to encounter liberal ideas, to become familiar with the best forms of progressive thought our society has to offer,” he added. “It’s good for college students to encounter conservative ideas, to appreciate traditional perspectives and hear strong right-of-center arguments.”  The previous guidelines required the DEI officer to “promote and advance diversity and inclusion throughout all levels and areas of the institution” through training, outreach, education programs, and strategies.  CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP In the new guidelines section on institutional neutrality, employees of the university are prohibited from consulting or contracting on “matters of contemporary political debate or social action” in their official capacity as a university employee. Earlier this month, the UNC-Chapel Hill board of trustees voted to gut funding for the school’s DEI department and give the money to campus police instead. “I think that DEI in a lot of people’s minds is divisiveness, exclusion and indoctrination,” said UNC-Chapel Hill budget committee vice chairman Marty Kotis. “We need more unity and togetherness, more dialogue, more diversity of thought.” Republican-led states across the country have moved to block public universities from implementing DEI policies that value identity over merit.  Related: Activism Over Education? A Man Reported His Father Missing And Was Interrogated Into Confessing To Murder. His Father Was Alive The Whole Time.

A California man reported his father missing and spent the next 17 hours being grilled by police until he confessed to murder. Now the man, Thomas Perez Jr., has received nearly $900,000 from the city of Fontana, California, after his father was found alive and well, The Orange County Register reported. Thomas’ ordeal began on August 7, 2018, when his father, Perez Sr., took the family dog for a walk to the mailbox and didn’t return, even though the dog returned within minutes. Thomas waited a few hours for his father to return, and then called the police to report him missing. Instead of searching for Perez Sr., investigators spent the next 17 hours grilling Thomas into confessing that he killed his father, with investigators claiming his father had been found dead and was in the morgue. The investigators, according to court records obtained by the Register, told Thomas they had evidence that he had killed his father and told him to just admit it. For hours, Thomas said he didn’t kill his father, but detectives allegedly explained that the human mind could block out traumatic memories. Detectives even told Thomas that they would kill his dog, Margosha, as a stray, even bringing her in so Thomas could say goodbye. Margosha was not euthanized. “OK? Your dog’s now gone, forget about it,” an investigator said, according to the Register. Photographs from the interrogation show Thomas lying on the floor in the fetal position with his dog in his arms. CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP “How can you sit there, how can you sit there and say you don’t know what happened, and your dog is sitting there looking at you, knowing that you killed your dad?” a detective said to Thomas. “Look at your dog. She knows, because she was walking through all the blood.” After holding his dog, Perez confessed to murdering his father, claiming he stabbed Perez Sr. with a pair of scissors after the older man hit Thomas on the head with a beer bottle. After confessing, a distraught Thomas tried to hang himself with the drawstring from his shorts when police left him alone in the interrogation room, the Register reported. He was then put in handcuffs and sent to a mental hospital for 72-hour observation. Before they sent Thomas to the mental hospital, however, Perez Sr. turned up alive and well. He had simply gone to the Los Angeles International Airport to wait for a flight to Northern California so he could see his daughter. Police didn’t immediately tell Thomas about this. Thomas sued the city of Fontana and recently settled his lawsuit for nearly $900,000. “Mentally torturing a false confession out of Tom Perez, concealing from him that his father was alive and well, and confining him in the psych ward because they made him suicidal, in my 40 years of suing the police I have never seen that level of deliberate cruelty by the police,” Thomas’ attorney, Jerry Steering, told the Register. One of the officers involved in the case has since retired, but three others are still employed by the police department. Police said in court documents they thought Thomas was lying because he seemed “unconcerned” when he called 911 to report his father missing. Police also found Perez Sr.’s cellphone and wallet in the home, which was a mess. Thomas said the mess was the result of renovations, but police believed it showed a struggle had occurred inside the home. A police dog also allegedly detected the scent of a corpse in Perez Sr.’s bedroom. As The Daily Wire has reported, sniffing dogs are hardly a reliable source. Police found blood in the home as well, but Steering argued those came from Perez Sr. pricking his finger for diabetes tests. Steering also argued in Thomas’ lawsuit that police spent hours refusing to provide Thomas with medications he took for high blood pressure, asthma, depression, and anxiety. “He was sleep deprived, mentally ill and significantly undergoing symptoms of withdrawal from his psychiatric medications,” U.S. District Court Judge Dolly Gee wrote in a summary of the case. In her summary judgment order published on June 15, 2023, Gee ruled that “a reasonable juror could conclude that the Detectives inflicted unconstitutional psychological torture on Perez,” according to Steering’s website. “There is no legitimate government interest that would justify treating Perez in this manner while he was in medical distress, since the FPD already had two warrants to search his person and property, and he was already essentially in custody and unable to flee or tamper with any evidence,” Gee wrote.

‘I’m Ready Now:’ Celine Dion Details Stiff-Person Syndrome Diagnosis In New Documentary

Céline Dion will detail her health struggles as part of the upcoming Amazon Prime Video documentary, “I Am: Céline Dion,” which premieres June 25. The streaming giant just released the documentary trailer, giving insight into what personal details will be included. It will follow the Canadian-born singer as she lives with stiff-person syndrome (SPS), a rare neurological disorder. Dion halted her tour schedule and took a step back from public life in 2022 following her diagnosis.  The trailer teases personal scenes from the singer’s life, giving fans, “raw and honest behind-the-scenes look at the iconic superstar’s struggle with a life-altering illness.” “Serving as a love letter to her fans, this inspirational documentary highlights the music that has guided her life while also showcasing the resilience of the human spirit,” a press release says of the project. “My voice is the conductor of my life,” Dion says in the trailer. “When your voice brings you joy, you’re the best of yourself. I need my instrument.” She goes on to discuss how much she loves performing, too. “When you record, it sounds great. But when you go on stage, it will be greater. I think we did create our own magic,” Dion says. “It’s not hard to do a show, you know. It’s hard to cancel a show,” she adds at another point. “I’m working hard every day, but I have to admit: It’s been a struggle. I miss it so much. The people, I miss them,” Dion says through tears. “If I can’t run, I’ll walk. If I can’t walk, I’ll crawl. And I won’t stop. I won’t stop.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP The “All By Myself” singer originally shared her diagnosis publicly in late 2022.  “I’ve been dealing with problems with my health for a long time, and it’s been really difficult for me to face these challenges and to talk about everything that I’ve been going through,” Dion said at the time, as The Daily Wire previously reported. “We are still learning about this rare condition, we now know this is what has been causing all of the spasms I have been having,” she added. “Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life. Sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal chords to sing the way I am used to.”

Loose Talk About the End of Everything

After a recent summit between new partners China and Russia, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin issued an odd, one-sentence communique: “There can be no winners in a nuclear war and it should never be fought.”No one would disagree, even though several officials of both hypocritical governments have previously threatened their neighbors with nuclear attacks. But still, why did the two feel the need to issue such a terse statement—and why now?Rarely has the global rhetoric of mass annihilation reached such a crescendo as the present, as existential wars rage in Ukraine and Gaza.In particular, Putin at least believes that he is finally winning the Russia-Ukraine war. Xi seems to assume that conventional ascendant Chinese military power in the South China Sea has finally made the absorption of Taiwan practicable. They both believe that the only impediment to their victories would be an intervention from the U.S. and the NATO alliance, a conflict that could descend into mutual threats to resort to nuclear weapons. Thus the recent warnings of Xi and Putin.Almost monthly, North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un continues his weary threats to use his nuclear arsenal to destroy South Korea or Japan.A similarly monotonous Turkish President Recep Erdogan, who is pro-Hamas, regularly threatens Armenians with crazy talk of repeating the “mission of our grandfathers.” And he occasionally warns Israelis and Greeks that they may one day wake up to Turkish missiles raining down upon their cities.More concretely, for the first time in history, Iran attacked the homeland of Israel. It launched the largest wartime array of cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and drones in modern history—over 320 projectiles.Iran’s theocrats simultaneously claim they are about ready to produce nuclear weapons. And, of course, since 1979, Iran periodically has promised to wipe Israel off the map and half the world’s Jews with it.Most ignore these crazy threats and write them off as the braggadocio of dictators. But as we saw on Oct. 7, the barbarity of human nature has not changed much from the premodern world, whether defined by savage beheading, mutilations, murdering, mass rape, torture, and hostage-taking of Israeli elderly, women, and children. But what has radically transformed are the delivery systems of mass death—nuclear weapons, chemical gases, biological agents, and artificial intelligence-driven delivery systems.Oddly, the global reaction to the promise of Armageddon remains one of nonchalance. Most feel that such strongmen rant wildly but would never unleash weapons of civilizational destruction.Consider that there are as many autocratic nuclear nations (e.g., Russia, China, Pakistan, North Korea, and perhaps Iran) as democratic ones (U.S., Britain, France, Israel, and India). Only Israel has an effective anti-ballistic missile dome. And the more the conventional power of the West declines, the more in extremis it will have to rely on a nuclear deterrent—at a time when it has no effective missile defense of its homelands. In a just-released book, “The End of Everything,” I write about four examples of annihilation—the classical city-state of Thebes, ancient Carthage, Byzantine Constantinople, and Aztec Tenochtitlan—in which the unimaginable became all too real.In all these erasures, the targeted, naive states believed that their illustrious pasts, rather than a realistic appraisal of their present inadequate defenses, would ensure their survival. All hoped that their allies—the Spartans, the anti-Roman Macedonians, the Christian nations of Western Europe, and the subject cities of the Aztecs—would appear at the eleventh hour to stave off their defeat.Additionally, these targeted states had little understanding of the agendas and capabilities of the brilliantly methodic killers outside their walls—the ruthless, wannabe philosopher Alexander the Great, the literary patron Scipio Aemilianus, the self-described intellectual Mehmet II, and the widely read Hernan Cortes—who all sought to destroy utterly rather than merely defeat their enemies. These doomed cities and nations were reduced to rubble or absorbed by the conquerors. Their populations were wiped out or enslaved, and their once-hallowed cultures, customs, and traditions lost to history. The last words of the conquered were usually variations of “It can’t happen here.”If the past is any guide to the present, we should take heed that what almost never happens in war can certainly still occur. When killers issue wild, even lunatic, threats, we should nonetheless take them seriously. We should not count on friends or neutrals to save our civilization. Instead, Americans should build defense systems over the skies of our homeland, secure our borders, ensure our military operates on meritocracy, cease wild deficit spending and borrowing, and rebuild both our conventional and nuclear forces.Otherwise, we will naively—and fatally—believe that we are magically exempt when the inconceivable becomes all too real.
