The Biden campaign is taking a page from former President Donald Trump’s playbook‚ rolling out a nickname for the president’s political rival as the 2024 race heats up. In an email to supporters on Thursday‚ the Biden-Harris campaign referred to Trump as “Broke Don‚” copying a strategy made popular by the former president during his 2016 and 2020 campaigns. Team Biden’s nickname for Trump comes after the Democrat’s campaign reported a massive fundraising edge over Trump and the Republican National Committee (RNC). According to a report filed on Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission‚ the Biden campaign ended February with $71 million cash on hand‚ which‚ combined with the Democratic National Committee‚ puts the president’s war chest at $97.5 million‚ POLITICO reported. The Biden campaign’s email also copies a talking point from Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign when the former president repeatedly called out Biden for running a “basement campaign.” Despite Trump making nicknames a common routine for his campaign rallies and speeches‚ some political strategists don’t think the strategy is a good move for the Biden campaign to take. One Democratic strategist told The Hill that “mimicking Trump has been done before and has never really worked.” “You can’t out-Trump Trump because he’s the original version. I would say they need to be more creative in producing their own original and unique strategy to bring him down a peg that shocks and awes‚” the strategist said. Bruce Mehlman‚ who worked in the George W. Bush administration‚ quoted a warning from George Bernard Shaw when asked about the Biden campaign’s new strategy. The Biden team mocked Trump’s financial situation as the former president faces mounting legal fees from his numerous civil and criminal cases‚ along with a $454 million judgment in the New York civil business fraud trial against him. On Friday‚ Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social that “through hard work‚ talent‚ and luck‚” he has nearly $500 million cash on hand ahead of the Monday deadline to post bond for the civil fraud judgment‚ saying that he had “intended to use” the money for his 2024 presidential campaign.
