Inflation, Immigration, Economy Are Top Concerns of Voters, Poll Finds

CENTER SQUARE—Likely voters across the country continue to be most concerned about inflation, the economy, and illegal immigration. This fresh data comes even as experts say inflation is slowing, indicating that Americans are still feeling the pinch of high prices. The Center Square Voters’ Voice Poll, conducted prior to the July 13 assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, found that likely voters said inflation/price increases (45%), illegal immigration (36%), and the economy/jobs (28%) were the issues that matter most to them heading into the November election. The poll was conducted in conjunction with Noble Predictive Insights July 8-11 and surveyed nearly 2,300 likely voters, including 1,006 Republicans, 1,117 Democrats, and 172 true (non-leaning) independents. It has a margin of error of 2.1 percentage points. The Center Square Voters’ Voice Poll is one of only six national tracking polls in the United States. The percentage of voters concerned with illegal immigration was down from an earlier Center Square Voters’ Voice Poll conducted in March. At that time, 44% of likely voters said illegal immigration was a top-three issue. Over that same period, voters have become more concerned with the economy/jobs, with that percentage rising from 24% to 28%. The other top 10 issues in the July poll were abortion rights (26%), crime/violence (24%), climate change (18%), health care access (18%), government corruption (16%), high taxes (15%), and national debt/government spending (15%). National security, voting rights, and partisan misuse of the Justice Department did not make the top 10. “This is a sign that not that much has changed,” David Byler of Noble Predictive Insights told The Center Square. “On the economic front, inflation is still an incredibly painful issue for people.” While 55% of Republicans identified inflation as a great concern, only 37% of Democrats did. True independents were more concerned than Democrats, at 44%. This could be a factor in swinging independents toward voting for Trump, especially as they were also significantly more likely than Democrats to disapprove of President Joe Biden’s handling of the economy. Overall, the poll shows, even though inflation is down from a 9.1% high two years ago, consumers continue to be concerned with the historically high prices they face. This comes as unemployment is also on the rise, likely contributing to the increase in concern about the economy/jobs. All of this translates into a bump in polling for Trump, who continues to widen the gap between himself and Biden. “Suicide capsule” will be tested on the first volunteer

A “suicide capsule” that offers a painless death within 10 minutes of administration is due to be used for the first time soon. Sarco is a 3D-printed capsule also known as the Tesla Euthanasia. Despite technological advances, its creators have been accused of “glamorizing” suicide and could face serious legal problems. Known as “Dr. Death,” Dr. Philip Nitschke said the first patient began using the Sarco capsule in Switzerland. He also noted that the capsule could be delivered anywhere in the world: “It could be an idyllic outdoor location or the premises of an assisted suicide organization.” Swiss media reported the readiness to use the Sarco capsule, but state prosecutor Peter Sticher warned that anyone who helps a patient use such capsules could be sentenced to up to 5 years in prison. According to Dr. Philip Nitschke, founder of Exit International, the Sarco capsule works by filling a chamber with nitrogen, which quickly reduces oxygen levels to the point that a person loses consciousness almost instantly. This process begins within the first minute, and after 10 minutes a “peaceful, safe, and drug-free” death occurs. The Exit International team says Sarco’s capsules can be activated using voice control or eye movement, making them accessible to those with severe medical conditions and mobility restrictions who are unable to communicate by voice. Sarco modules, which are activated by a button, blink, or gesture, also feature an emergency button and provide an escape route if the user changes their mind. “There is no reliable information about the killing method. It is completely unclear who controls any mechanical process during the dying process,” Sticher said. Swiss law, including Article 115 of the Criminal Code, allows assisted suicide, provided the motivation is not personal gain or selfishness. PBS: Trump Is 'Uglier And Darker,' More 'Dangerous' Than 2016 On Immigration

PolitiFact may have teamed up with PBS for the remainder of the 2024 election cycle, but perhaps they should be checking PBS News Hour instead because on Friday, host Amna Nawaz falsely claimed Donald Trump was using “more dangerous, kind of, vicious language” in targeting “black and brown immigrants” than he was in 2016. Recapping Trump’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, Nawaz declared to New York Times columnist David Brooks, “The thing that struck me about — that was different this year was particularly on illegal immigration. There was much more dangerous, kind of, vicious language, targeting really black and brown immigrants, talking about them carrying disease and attacking women and stealing jobs.”     That’s simply wrong. Here’s what Trump actually said, “And you know who's being hurt the most by millions of people pouring into our country, the black population and the Hispanic population because they're taking the jobs from our black population, our Hispanic population, and they're also taking them from unions. The unions are suffering because of it.” Sure, Trump was talking about blacks and Latino Americans having to compete with illegal immigrants for work, but that’s not new from Trump. It also has nothing to do with Nawaz’s claim that Trump was demagoguing about black and Latino immigrants bringing diseases. The only time Trump used the word “disease” was in reference to unleashing American innovation to cure diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s. Facts aside, Nawaz then asked Brooks for his thoughts, and he agreed with her and suggested that the GOP ticket was being hypocritical, “It's paradoxical. And I can't remember another ticket where both candidates are married to an immigrant or children of immigrants.” Brooks added, “It's gotten uglier and darker. And Trump's grievance has gotten more menacing. At the same time, MAGA is a much more intellectually serious movement than it was. It has an agenda. It has a group of intellectuals. It has a group of magazines, all of which is personified by JD Vance.” He concluded by reiterating, “Both those realities, one kind of impressive, the way they have intellectually come together around that agenda, and the other kind of alarming, that the level of prejudice seems only to increase.” Executive producer Sara Just hyped PBS’s partnership with PolitiFact by claiming that people who try to cast doubt on media accuracy damage democracy in the process, but what about news anchors who report falsehoods? Here is a transcript for the July 19 show: PBS News Hour 7/19/2024 7:35 PM ET AMNA NAWAZ: The thing that struck me about — that was different this year was particularly on illegal immigration. There was much more dangerous, kind of, vicious language, targeting really black and brown immigrants, talking about them carrying disease and attacking women and stealing jobs. Did that stick out to you at all? DAVID BROOKS: Yes, I did. It's paradoxical. And I can't remember another ticket where both candidates are married to an immigrant or children of immigrants. But I think what's happened is that global populism has done two things. One, it's fed on each other. The Orbans, the Giorgia Melonis, the Marine Le Pens, and the Donald Trumps have fed on each this anti-immigrant theme as the thing that unites them globally. And so it's gotten uglier and darker. And Trump's grievance has gotten more menacing. At the same time, MAGA is a much more intellectually serious movement than it was. It has an agenda. It has a group of intellectuals. It has a group of magazines, all of which is personified by JD Vance. And the fact that the Teamsters, where — the president was represented there, was a sign that something much bigger here is happening, that Trump's grievance and the ugliness is true. But the idea that there is an intellectual movement here on defense of the working class, that is also true. And so I think both those realities, one kind of impressive, the way they have intellectually come together around that agenda, and the other kind of alarming, that the level of prejudice seems only to increase.

Mark Levin 'lays out the facts' of Trump’s shooter

Mark Levin, although disturbed by Trump’s near assassination, wasn’t shocked at the attempt on the former president’s life. “What do the media think is going to happen when they keep calling Donald Trump Hitler? When individual hosts so pathetically, egotistically say, ‘I fear for my liberty if Donald Trump is elected; I fear that he will throw me in prison’?” he asks. What he is shocked by, however, is the unbelievable circumstances surrounding the assassination attempt. Mark Lays Out the Facts of Trump’s Would-be Assassin youtu.be “How the hell does a guy,” who has “not even [a] military background” or “law enforcement background” mange to “get access to a building which is a staging ground for local police and Special Ops” carrying something as big as a rifle? Mark asks, perplexed. “How does he sit on that roof, then lie down, get in position, [while] the audience is screaming, ‘He's got a gun! He's got a gun!’?” “I'm not blaming anyone yet; I'm laying out the facts as we know them,” he says. To hear more of Mark’s analysis and discover what Donald Trump said to him following the day of the assassination attempt, watch the clip above. Last Supper room

Last Supper room

One of the great historical quests in Biblical archaeology has been the search for the room in Jerusalem where Jesus shared his Last Supper with the apostles. Since traditional archaeological excavations have produced no useful evidence that might clear up this question, scholars have been forced to resort to other means to find clues that might help them find this legendary room, which has so much meaning to the larger Christian community (and to ancient historians in general). While the exact location of the Last Supper room remains unknown, archaeologists who’ve dedicated themselves to the search believe they are closer than ever to finding the site. Their investigations are focusing on an ancient two-story structure that can be found on Mount Zion just outside the walls of Jerusalem’s Old City. This building that has long been alleged to be both the site of the tomb of the Biblical King David and the place where the Last Supper was served, with the lower floor covering the former and the Upper Room (known as the Cenacle, or “dining-room” in ancient Latin) associated with the latter.
