Why You Should Never “Rescue” Baby Deer You Find Alone In The Wild

While out walking in deer country, you just might come across what some call “lost fawns”. These deer babies are often found curled up at the base of a tree or beneath a bush, but they do not need you to rescue them.Adult deer with babies in tow have evolved a smart way to go out foraging. Instead of allowing their all legs, no balance offspring to slow them down, they stash their babies in hiding places, and fawns are expert hiders. The babies of most deer species have spots on their backs that fade as they age, and this is because they need them for camouflage when they’re young. While mom goes out foraging, the babies will curl up and remain motionless, and newborns spend more than 95 percent of their time hiding in this way. When it comes to the big game animals, this is one of two approaches observed in nature for keeping young alive. While deer are known as “hiders”, other animals like bison and bighorn sheep are “followers” as their offspring immediately get on their feet and start following mom around.Fawns are so well camouflaged wildlife photographers often report almost stepping on them by accident.Image credit: Karel Bock / Shutterstock.comDeer fawns take a more relaxed approach to early life, getting on their feet only to nurse their mothers before she goes back out into the field in search of food. Understandably, finding Bambi all alone in the big scary woods has led lots of people to fear they are in trouble and “rescue” the lone animal, but this is a big mistake.A deer mom remembers where she stashed her fawns, and if they get moved by humans there’s a chance she won’t find them again. Picking up a fawn can drastically reduce their chances of survival, and they are difficult animals to rear in captivity, so even the best of intentions to get a fawn some medical help can actually be a fatal misunderstanding.      For that reason, wildlife services strongly advise that you do not touch baby deer you spot in the wild as they are very rarely abandoned and mom is usually only a short distance away. Human presence can prevent her from returning, so it’s best to leave the fawns well alone. There are some exceptions, such as if a fawn is found next to its dead mother, is visibly injured, or is seeking out your attention and bleating in distress. In these instances, it’s best to call your local wildlife service for help so that they can properly assess the situation and work out the best next steps. They look helpless, but baby deer are expert hiders.Image credit: Todd Maertz / Shutterstock.comWhat to do if you find a baby deer alone in the woodsIn light of this, the Wildlife Aid Foundation put together three golden rules for if you find a fawn to try and prevent well-meaning members of the public from causing unintentional harm. So, if you find a deer fawn, here’s what to do:Do not touch it – the only exception to this golden rule is if the animal is in immediate danger, such as standing in the middle of the road. Touching deer fawns can increase their chance of being rejected by their mother, as she will be able to pick up the human scent.Walk away quietly – deer mothers rarely go far when they forage. Human presence may be preventing her from returning, and if you have a dog it’s best to pop it on a leash so she doesn’t get scared away.Call the experts – if you have reason to believe the animal is in real danger, such as if you have found it next to its dead mother, call your local wildlife center for assistance.Follow these rules and with a bit of luck, Bambi and mom will be just fine.

Orcas Seen Gobbling Up Bull Sharks In Gulf Of California Are Repeat Offenders

Orcas have become pretty much the poster child for ocean shenanigans in the last few years with their antics sinking yachts in the Mediterranean. While research suggests they are doing this mostly for fun, and not for malicious reasons, new research has been released that sees them gobbling up sharks in the Gulf of California, putting them back on the top spot as the most sinister animals in the ocean.Typically, orcas (Orcinus orca) have a wide dietary range that includes marine mammals like seals, seabirds, squid, and octopuses, as well as a large variety of fish species. Cartilaginous fish, including some shark species, were known to be consumed occasionally but were not thought to make up a large part of the orca diet. However, observations in recent years have revealed orcas chowing down on great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) in South Africa. These cases are often revealed to researchers through the public catching these occurrences on cameras or personal drones. The team involved in this research studied orca pods in the Cabo Pulmo National Park, in the Gulf of California, and found the same individuals hunting sharks over a period of almost two years. This marine protected area played host to three different orca-shark, predator-prey interaction events during this time. The first was an orca pod patrolling an area where blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) are known to gather in larger numbers, the second was an orca pod attempting to kill a bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas), and the third was orcas successfully consuming a bull shark in the south of the area.In the attempted case of the bull shark predation, the shark escaped the attack from two orcas by swimming underneath a local dive boat. While the orcas circled the boat for around 30 seconds, they then left, and neither they nor the shark were seen again on the drone footage. The bull shark sought to hide from the attacking orcas by swimming near a dive boat.Image credit: Carlos Lozano Hernandez, Ayres et al., Frontiers In Marine Science 2024 (CC BY 4.0)Examining the drone footage of the three events has allowed the team to identify the individual orcas that were present in at least one of each of the events, named “Quetzalli", "Niich" and "Waay".The team thinks that since the park was created in 1995, the number of sharks within the area has increased far more than was previously expected. Given this increase, it is thought this may have contributed to the amount of shark-orca interactions. In other areas, the presence and predation of orcas on different shark species has caused the sharks to leave the area. The team plans to keep up the long-term monitoring of orca and shark interactions to determine the potential long-term effects of these predation events and how they will shape this marine protected area. The study is published in Frontiers in Marine Science.

Judge who ordered newspaper man to court for exposing trans shooter's manifesto didn't want to hear his defense

Michael Patrick Leahy, the CEO of Star News Digital Media and the editor of the Tennessee Star, drew the ire of a low-level Democratic judge for publishing documents the FBI wanted suppressed or possibly even destroyed: the suicide note and deranged writings of the radical transvestite who murdered three children and three adults last year in a Nashville Christian school. After Stacy Cameron, a reporter for a local Fox News affiliate, effectively snitched on the Tennessee Star for doing what mainstream media outlets refused to do, Judge l'Ashea Myles of the Tennessee 20th Judicial District Chancery Court ordered Leahy to court for a show cause hearing. The stated aim of the hearing was "to determine why the alleged publication of certain purported documents by Petitioners Star Digital Media and Michael Leahy, as the Editor-in-Chief, does not violate the Orders of this Court subjecting them to contempt proceedings and sanctions." The suggestion was that by allegedly publishing writings under the judge's in-camera review, Leahy and the Tennessee Star's parent company may have interfered with their lawsuit seeking the full release of the trans killer's writing by the Metro Nashville Police Department. According to Blaze News investigative reporter Steve Baker, who was in the courtroom Monday, it quickly became clear that Myles "wished she had not called the hearing." "It seemed like she was trying to get out of it," said Baker. "She initiated something that was over her head, over her pay grade — something that was out of bounds with the law." While the hearing was supposed to be centered on Leahy, neither he nor his counsel Daniel Horwitz were able to get out more than a few words. Instead, Myles appeared keen on leaning on the other parties present to express their grievances and concerns, effectively filibustering her own proceeding by proxy. "The judge allowed everybody else to speak except for the one guy the hearing was called for," said Baker. "Michael Leahy's attorney — every time he got up, which was twice, she interrupted him and cut him off mid-stream. She told him that she was not going to hear any arguments today in regards to the case." "She actually said these words: 'Your arguments are not yet ripe,'" continued Baker. The Star indicated that Myles reimagined the purpose of the hearing to get a feeling for the "landscape" of the situation. While Baker will detail some of the more absurd and shocking aspects of the hearing in a forthcoming piece for Blaze News, he has nevertheless made clear it was a gong show. "What in the hell did I just witness?" Baker said Monday on "The Michael Patrick Leahy Show." "As soon as the court adjourned ... I went, 'What the you-know-what?'" "She wanted to understand everybody's position. She reiterated over and over again that she wasn't the investigator: 'I'm just the judge. I'm not the prosecutor. I'm just the judge and I'm just here to get understanding.’ And she did wrap it up at the end and said, 'Okay, now I understand.' When court was adjourned ... I said, 'Does she understand what an airhead she is?'" said Baker. Baker suggested to Blaze News that Myles likely realized in the days leading up to the show cause hearing "she had made a mistake" and didn't want the matter to end up going to an appeals court. "She set the wheels in motion, then realized, 'I blew it here. I should not have done this,'" continued Baker. "She was covering her ass." On his show Monday, Leahy reflected on the outcome of the show cause hearing, saying, "She didn't allow me to show cause nor did she allow my lawyer to show cause why I shouldn't be held in contempt. She changed the purpose of the meeting." While none of the attorneys who spoke at the hearing Monday reportedly argued that Leahy broke the law, the newspaper man indicated she may still assign a special prosecutor to go after him for publishing the shooter's journal. "So let me give you the bottom line on all this. I thought there'd be two outcomes or possibilities. Either [Myles] was going to set up a special prosecutor to investigate and prosecute us, or she was going to take it under advisement and then issue an order later," said Leahy. "So that's what she did. She said, 'I'm going to take all of this under advisement and I'll issue an order.' She didn't say when. If that order is to set up a special prosecutor, I will still be in legal jeopardy. That's my take on it." Like Blaze News? New Jersey city cops to cite parents for kids' unruly behavior after spate of violence, 'civil unrest' in neighboring areas

A city along the South Jersey Shore has taken preemptive measures after teens in surrounding areas have engaged in "civil unrest" and even violence in recent weeks.Last Wednesday, the Margate City Police Department announced that officers would be strictly enforcing a parental responsibility ordinance that allows cops to cite parents when their unsupervised children disturb the city's peace. According to the announcement, unaccompanied minors caught engaging in unlawful behavior, putting their safety at risk, or ignoring the commands of police officers will be taken to the station, where parents or guardians must come pick them up.'These kids have little to no respect for anyone. No respect for themselves, no respect for their friends, and no respect for police, officials, [or] adults.'The parental responsibility ordinance addresses misbehavior such as loitering, playing in vacant lots or wharves, or strolling down the street after curfew. The curfew extends from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m.A parent or guardian's first proxy offense will result in a fine between $100 and $1,000 and/or up to 90 days of community service. In some cases, a judge may even sentence a parent and child to perform the community service together. The minor may also be criminally charged, if appropriate."We, and other police departments and public officials in the state, have asked parents to better supervise their children over the past few years. To date, those calls have been met with limited, or no, success leading us to take this action to ensure the safety of those in the community," MCPD wrote."We are pushed to our limit."Neighboring areas have already suffered several instances of public unrest on account of unruly teens. Over Memorial Weekend, the City of Wildwood had to declare a temporary state of emergency after teens began participating in "numerous incidents of civil unrest," prompting Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. to ban backpacks and other large bags on the boardwalk and on beaches."These kids have little to no respect for anyone," Troiano said. "No respect for themselves, no respect for their friends, and no respect for police, officials, [or] adults — just a total lack of respect for any form of authority, and it's become an issue where we cannot enforce the laws."That same weekend, a young person in nearby Ocean City was stabbed after a fight broke out among a large group of teenagers. Thankfully, the victim suffered only non-life-threatening injuries.Following that incident, longtime Ocean City Mayor Richard Meehan said: "Ocean City will always be welcoming to all guests, but I want to send a clear message to parents and to teens: 'If you don't want to behave, don't come.'"Residents of Margate City are hopeful that enforcing the ordinance will help keep the peace in their city. "It might get some kids a little scared," one teen admitted. An area mom believes that parents will now "keep an eye on their kids." "It's tough, but they have to."Like Blaze News? iPadOS 18 takes Apple Pencil to the next level with these apps and features

iPadOS 18 is already available for developers to try it out. While we expected this iPad operating system update to finally unlock the M4 iPad Pro's full potential, it seems Apple has a different view of what its tablets are capable of. Nonetheless, iPadOS 18 brings important changes to how some apps behave with Apple Pencil, making the experience with this accessory even more joyful. That said, BGR gathered the new features iPadOS 18 unlocks for Apple Pencil (Pro, USB-C, 1, and 2) and how you can take advantage of them once the new system becomes available. Smart Script in Notes: For sure, one of the best uses for Apple Pencil is handwriting. With iPadOS 18, Apple takes it to the next level with Smart Script. Using on-device machine learning model, the iPad can recreate your handwriting style from your notes. With that, you can write your thoughts as fast as you have them and Smart Script will refine your handwriting, making it smoother, straighter, and more legible. This feature even correct spelling inline. You can touch and drag to reflow text for more space and scratch out writing to remove it. Highlighting: With iPadOS 18’s Notes app, you can also highlight what you’ve just written. Using the Apple Pencil, the experience is way better. Math Notes with Apple Pencil: iPadOS 18 finally brings a Calculator app to the iPad. With a Notes app integration, you can take advantage of Math Notes. This feature, which becomes more useful with Apple Pencil, helps you evaluate expressions, assign variables, and plot graphs. The calculator solves expressions inline as soon as you write or type an equals sign. In addition to basic math, Math Notes can solve all the same functions as a scientific calculator. You can even assign variables, use them in equations and graphs, and then adjust them to see how they affect your results. And it’s easy to save a Math Note to revisit anytime, from either Calculator or the Notes app. SharePlay tap and draw in screen sharing: Lastly, Apple added the ability to draw in screen sharing thanks to SharePlay. With that, you can help friends and family with their devices by tapping and drawing on your screen to point out what they should do on theirs. Apple Pencil makes this experience more reliable. KFC Mac and Cheese

Make your own KFC Mac and Cheese at home with that signature taste that you know and love in under a half hour with this easy recipe! BETTER THAN THE DRIVE THRU I know KFC is not everyone’s cup of tea but it sure is mine! I love a good little serving of their Mac and cheese with my fried chicken. So I went about trying to recreate that signature taste. The only think I couldn’t figure out is how they get it that almost neon orange color – ha! My guess is some sort of added food coloring. The taste is pretty spot on though. So, when that craving hits for that rich, creamy, tender mac and cheese, you can whip up a batch in no time with this simple recipe! FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:  Why isn’t my KFC Copycat Mac and Cheese thick? Don’t worry, this Mac and Cheese thickens as it cools and it’ll be the same consistency with just as much creaminess in no time. It does have that unique texture after it sits for a bit! Why is my mac and cheese a different color? If you want that neon orange color they have at KFC, you’ll have to add food coloring. Add in equal amounts of red and yellow food coloring (start with two drops each then add more as preferred to reach desired color). What if I don’t want to use Velveeta? This recipe requires it – sorry! It gives this the closest taste to the KFC version. However, you can make your own version of Velveeta if you prefer not to use the store-bought. Use my Homemade Velveeta recipe to make some. Where do I find powdered milk in the grocery store? You can find powdered milk in boxes, bags, or even in cans. It’s typically in the baking aisle in most grocery stores. How should I store leftover KFC Mac and Cheese? Leftovers keep best in the fridge for up to 3 days in an airtight container. Keep them for longer by freezing in a freezer safe container for up to 3 months. What’s the best way to reheat Copycat KFC Mac and Cheese? This is easily reheated in the microwave. But, you can also use the stovetop. If doing so on the stove, add a splash more milk to loosen it up as you heat and stir it. INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE) elbow macaroni whole milk– if you want that signature KFC flavor you can’t skimp on the fat here, you have to stick with whole milk. powdered milk– this is the secret to achieving that true KFC flavor, I don’t have any substitution suggestions for this. If you don’t know what to do with that extra powdered milk, make some Homemade Velveeta and use it in this recipe or in other cheese dips! cornstarch – this is going to help with thickening – don’t substitute with flour, it makes a difference. dry ground mustard– trust me, you need this! Don’t skip! Velveeta– You can check out the FAQ section. The package has markings on it so you can measure just what you need easily. shredded sharp cheddar cheese– you can use the pre-shredded stuff but I find that shredding the cheese fresh off the block melts better than the bagged stuff that’s already shredded. salt HOW TO MAKE KFC MAC AND CHEESE Cook the macaroni per the directions on the back of the box in a large stock pot or Dutch oven. Drain well and add back to the pot. Add the milk, milk powder, cornstarch, mustard, and Velveeta over medium-low heat. Stir constantly until the Velveeta is melted. Do not let this come to a simmer. Take off the heat and stir in the cheddar. Taste and add salt if needed. This does thicken as it cools so if you like it thicker, just give it a few minutes to cool and stir occasionally.  CRAVING MORE RECIPES?  The Best Creamy ColeslawBig Mac WrapsWhite Cheddar Mac and CheeseCrock Pot Ham Mac and CheeseInstant Pot Sausage Mac and Cheese Print KFC Mac and Cheese Make your own creamy, tender mac and cheese like you get from the drive thru with this simple copycat KFC Mac and Cheese recipe.
