Pennysylvania Democratic senator John Fetterman‚ who has recently shown a willingness to publicly differ from the party line espoused by his Democratic colleagues‚ harshly denounced South Africa — which has a history of racial violence — for accusing Israel of genocide in its war against Hamas. Republican presidential candidates Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley took part in a contentious primary debate at Drake University in Iowa on Wednesday night‚ taking shots at each other throughout the evening.  The GOP debate‚ hosted by CNN‚ featured only DeSantis and Haley on stage‚ the smallest debate yet in the Republican primary. It took place in Des Moines‚ Iowa‚ just days before the state’s caucuses on Monday.  The only agreements between the two candidates came when they addressed the absence of former President Donald Trump and slammed President Joe Biden’s policies. Both DeSantis and Haley said they wished Trump had appeared on stage with them as the candidates hope to upset the GOP frontrunner in the Iowa caucuses.  Much of the debate‚ however‚ centered on the differences between the Florida governor and the former U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Shortly after the debate began‚ the two traded barbs over their positions on the issues‚ accusing each other of flip-flopping and lying.  “You’re going to see the fact that [DeSantis has] switched his policies multiple times‚” Haley told voters what to expect in the debate. “But every time he lies‚ Drake University‚ don’t turn this into a drinking game because you will be overserved by the end of the night.” DeSantis quickly shot back‚ telling the crowd‚ “Nikki Haley has this tactic — if you hold her accountable to her record‚ first she’ll say ‘I never said that.’ Well‚ one good rule of thumb‚ if she says she never said something‚ that definitely means she said it. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) introduced a bill on Thursday that would block states from being able to use federal funding to subsidize state programs that provide health care for illegal immigrants.  The legislation‚ known as the “Protect Medicaid Act‚” would prevent federal Medicaid “funding for the administrative costs of providing health benefits to individuals who are unauthorized immigrants.” Co-sponsors of the legislation include Sens. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN)‚ John Barrasso (R-WY)‚ Roger Wicker (R-MS)‚ and Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS).  According to Cassidy’s office‚ the bill “prohibits federal money from being spent on administering state Medicaid benefits paid for by American citizens to noncitizens. If a state chooses to give Medicaid benefits to illegal residents‚ the bill ensures that state does so entirely on its own dime‚ without any costs to taxpayers in other states.” The legislation comes as California expands its Medicaid program to provide free health care for about 700‚000 illegal immigrants in the state. The expansion is projected to cost the state more than $3 billion. Oregon has a similar program on the books.  “Medicaid for migrants is a magnet for more illegal immigration‚” Cassidy said. “This is terrible public policy for California citizens who depend on Medicaid‚ middle-class families paying taxes‚ and state debt. Taking care of the most vulnerable Americans should be our priority. Attempting to provide health care to everyone around the globe for free is not possible or feasible. Compassion that cannot be sustained is not compassion.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP The bill would also mandate that the inspector general for the Department of Health Care and Human Services produce a report on states that fund health care for illegal immigrants.  The report would provide‚ “a description of States’ methods of financing State programs that provide health benefits to noncitizens who are ineligible for medical assistance due to not having a satisfactory immigration status‚ including through the increased use of provider taxes and intergovernmental transfers to finance the non-Federal share of expenditures under the State Medicaid program for medical assistance provided to individuals who are not so ineligible.” Blackburn said that programs to provide state funding for health care for illegal immigrants were unfair and jeopardized the health care of Americans. “Tennesseans and the American people do not want their tax dollars subsidizing Medicaid for illegal immigrants‚” she said. “Not only is it unfair to hardworking citizens‚ but it incentivizes more illegal immigration and puts the care of millions of Americans on the back burner.” The legislation comes as the U.S. southern border has been inundated with a surge of illegal immigrants. In December‚ Border Patrol recorded about 300‚000 foreign national encounters‚ an all-time high. A report from last year estimated that illegal immigration could cost American taxpayers up to $451 billion. 

After a former Texas judge and his wife were murdered‚ police arrested and charged their 45-year-old son with capital murder. Seth B. Carnes was arrested late Monday evening in Georgetown‚ Texas‚ according to a press release from the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office. Around 11:45 p.m. that night‚ authorities received a call about a shooting near the home of retired District Judge Alfred “Burt” Carnes and his wife Susan‚ both 74. When deputies arrived‚ Seth Carnes was exiting the residence and told deputies that he had just shot and killed his parents‚ the press release stated. Carnes was taken into custody and charged with capital murder. He is currently being held without bond‚ according to the sheriff’s office. When deputies entered the home‚ they found the bodies of Alfred and Susan with fatal gunshot wounds. The sheriff’s office said that a preliminary investigation determined the murders resulted from a disagreement between Seth and his parents‚ but did not elaborate. “This deeply distressing incident has sent shockwaves through our community‚ particularly considering Alfred ‘Burt’ Carnes’ esteemed position as a retired District Judge‚” Commander John Foster of the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division said in the press release. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family affected by this heartbreaking event.” Sheriff Mike Gleason added in a separate post that “Mr. Carnes was a respected and admired figure in our community‚ known for his fair and compassionate approach to justice. His dedication to upholding the law and ensuring the well-being of those around him was truly remarkable. An agency of the California state government granted nearly $200‚000 to an organization that hosts internships exclusively for women and “gender expansive” youth‚ an apparent violation of anti-discrimination laws. The organization‚ Syryn Records‚ is a project of Girls Rock SB‚ a non-profit organization that’s received over $183‚000 in grants from the California Arts Council‚ a state agency. A social media graphic from Syryn Records laid out that to qualify for a position at the company you “must self-identify as a girl‚ BIPOC‚ or gender expansive.” An application for the internship program also states‚ “Applicants must self-identify as female or gender-expansive‚” before adding “BIPOC humans strongly encouraged to apply.” “We’ve made it our mission to bring girls’‚ women’s‚ and non-binary and gender-expansive youth’s creative dreams to life through inclusivity and diversity‚” the record label explains in a description of the company. Syryn Records appears to have the same selection criteria for paid staff members‚ with the organization stating‚ “We need not 1‚ not 2‚ but 5 FEMALE AND GENDER-EXPANSIVE STAFF to help us run our next 15-week SYRYN RECORDS cohort.” The organization goes on to say “In case you haven’t heard‚ women and gender-expansive people are grossly underrepresented in the music industry.” David Bernstein‚ a professor at George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia School of Law‚ told The Daily Wire that programs that discriminate against people on the basis of their race violate Title VII and that the state funding could potentially impact the legal environment. “State funding may (a) create obligations for the state to cut off that funding; and (b) may impose additional legal non-discrimination obligations on the entity‚” Bernstein explained. One of the most recent grants to Girls Rock SB‚ which designated $38‚000 to the organization for “creative youth development‚” acknowledges the non-profit’s focus on “gender-expansive youth.” A project description states “The mission of Girls Rock SB (GRSB) is to empower girls‚ women‚ and gender-expansive youth through music education‚ the creative arts‚ community‚ and positive mentorship.” “Our programs work to change the status quo of artistic spaces—especially the music industry‚ which lacks representation from female and gender-expansive voices‚ specifically from marginalized communities like women of color and LGBTQ+ people” it reads before adding “Since launching in 2012‚ GRSB has provided immersive arts programs to more than 11‚000 female-identifying and non-binary youth‚ approximately roughly ages 5–23‚ with a focus on marginalized and historically under-resourced communities.” Girls Rock SB and the California Arts Council did not respond to requests for comment. 

What’s the hardest job in Hollywood? You might think it’s handling PR chores for Jonathan Majors or Ezra Miller. Good guess‚ but wrong. Try hosting a major awards show telecast. The greats made it look easy in days gone by. Think Bob Hope‚ Johnny Carson‚ Billy Crystal and Steve Martin. They entertained millions‚ kept the material clean and enhanced the aura of the shows in question and their comic brands. Michael Caulfield/WireImage And‚ best of all? No one complained the next day about a joke that “punched down” or targeted a protected group or class. Now? It’s the cruelest job in Tinsel Town‚ a gig with more fine print than a bank loan. Jo Koy learned this lesson the hard way. The affable comic‚ known for humorously recreating his mother’s life lessons on stage‚ is a serious stand-up draw. He routinely plays arenas‚ not clubs‚ and last year headlined his first feature comedy‚ “Easter Sunday.” He was an unconventional choice to host the recent Golden Globes telecast given he lacked the name recognition of more established stars‚ but he was hardly a poor selection on paper. His best jokes proved mediocre‚ he worked blue in amateurish fashion and‚ worst of all‚ threw his writing team under the bus mid-monologue when he knew he was bombing. “You want a perfect monologue? Yo‚ shut up. I wrote some of these‚ and those are the ones you’re gonna laugh at.” That’s the kind of flop-sweat moment that’s hard to forgive and forget‚ especially for his writing team. And‚ naturally‚ critics skewered Koy’s handiwork. The monologue also triggered Swiftie Nation‚ which howled over an innocent Koy quip about the NFL’s wall-to-wall coverage of Taylor Swift’s sudden interest in the Kansas City Chiefs. The joke didn’t even target Swift‚ but the fact that it was Swift-adjacent was more than enough. Koy’s troubles are hardly the only reason awards show gigs are so‚ to use the woke Left’s terminology‚ “problematic.” That helps explain why Chris Rock‚ Ali Wong and the “Smartless” podcast trio – Jason Bateman‚ Will Arnett and Sean Hayes – turned the Globes hosting gig down previous to Koy. Wong may be a rising star thanks to her stand-up chops and sturdy work in the Netflix series “Beef‚” but she wisely stood down. Rock‚ one of the best stand-up comics around‚ wants no part of the gig even though he handled the task twice already (the 2005 and 2016 Oscars). That was then‚ before Cancel Culture made every gag a potential woke landmine. Rock also declined the chance to host the 2023 Oscars‚ roughly a year after Will Smith slapped him on stage for telling a joke about the actor’s wife. It’s become the new Hollywood badge of honor – turning down the chance to host an awards gala. Comic superstar Kevin Hart famously landed the Oscar-hosting gig and lost it in record time in 2018 after crude‚ decade-old gay jokes “resurfaced.” The Oscars even went host-free for three straight years (2019-2021) following HartGate‚ an acknowledgment of how tricky the gig suddenly is. How many comedians could survive the woke vetting? There’s another reason comedians would rather bomb at a Hell’s Kitchen bar than play to an awards show crowd. Said crowd keeps getting smaller. Snagging an Emmy or Oscar-hosting gig once meant performing before a massive TV audience. That could turn a comedian into a superstar overnight. Show ratings are generally on the decline‚ alas. Even the Globes‚ which enjoyed a strong uptick from the 2023 edition‚ is still far below recent years. The 2020 edition drew a hearty 18.4 million viewers‚ the final year before COVID-19 and scandals rocked the organization. And then there’s the expectations that go with the job. That includes using the bully pulpit to advance progressive causes. For veteran hosts like Jimmy Kimmel‚ that’s a no-brainer. It’s what he does each night on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” Others may not feel as comfortable going in that direction. It could explain why Johnson is steering clear of any awards show stage. He has political aspirations and doesn’t want to trigger half the country. Koy’s monologue‚ while a touch woke‚ avoided politics entirely. He might have gotten a softer landing had he lobbed a few barbs at Donald Trump or other GOP favorites. Maybe. He would have gotten a bigger rhetorical beating if he took some swings at President Joe Biden‚ though. The only steady hosts these days come from late-night TV. Both Jimmy Kimmel and Trevor Noah keep getting tapped for the gigs‚ from the Oscars to the Grammys. They’re both aggressively liberal‚ which appeases the industry’s tastemakers along with media critics. Ratings matter less than The Hollywood-approved messaging. Why else hire deeply divisive comedians who chase Red State audiences away? Plus‚ if ratings truly mattered‚ Ricky Gervais would host the Oscars and Dave Chappelle would tackle the Emmy and Grammy awards.
