Why Some Gen Z Women Are Ditching the ‘Girlboss’ for the ‘Tradwife’

Why Some Gen Z Women Are Ditching the ‘Girlboss’ for the ‘Tradwife’

Hannah Neeleman‚ a Utah-based cattle farmer and mother of eight‚ is perhaps the most popular Instagram “tradwife”—a growing category of social media influencers who reject the not-so-traditional 9-to-5 workforce in favor of homeschooling their children‚ homemaking or running a family business. Though her content is entirely wholesome‚ she (and other tradwife accounts) are not without controversy. In the case of Ballerina Farm‚ followers recently uncovered that Daniel Neeleman‚ Hannah’s husband‚ is the son of the founder and former CEO of JetBlue‚ whose estimated net worth is $400 million. Her kitchen stove‚ prominently featured in many of Hannah’s videos where she bakes sourdough bread‚ farm-raised beef‚ and other dishes‚ costs a minimum of $20‚000. For those who laud their simple lifestyle as cattle farmers‚ many felt blindsided by the wealth enabling their smooth transition to homesteading. After all‚ starting a farm requires many high-cost purchases on the front end‚ from the land‚ equipment‚ and animals‚ forcing many farmers into perpetual debt. Yet Hannah and other tradwife accounts will easily maintain their prominence going into 2024. For many women‚ who increasingly report “persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness” and disillusionment with the “girlboss” lifestyle‚ these influencers offer an idyllic alternative to urban life. They are illuminating a deeper hunger among women‚ especially among Generation Z. A quick search on Google Trends shows that the term “tradwife” gained popularity in 2018‚ but peaked in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated women’s return to the home. Instead of being confined to religious or ultrawealthy women‚ the tradwife movement entered mainstream discussions. It offered women the chance to reclaim the ingredients of happiness—faith‚ family‚ community‚ and meaningful work—back from the career-focused model they grew up with. Popular online accounts (explored here and here) tend to show women who don the clothes and lifestyle that they perceive women in a previous era embodied: shirtwaist dresses‚ aprons‚ a rejection of formal work outside the home‚ and a heavy emphasis on homemaking and care for children. Instead of finding the home stuffy‚ boring‚ or trivial‚ many women found greater purpose and satisfaction than they previously imagined. Initially‚ the pandemic gave women the ultimate “permission slip” to explore the domestic realm (stay inside to stay alive). Later‚ popular and aesthetically pleasing tradwife accounts gave women the encouragement they needed to combat the outspoken expectations that all women‚ even mothers‚ ought to rejoin the 9-to-5 workforce.   It’s worth considering why Gen Z women‚ who have the most professional opportunities and fewest barriers to education‚ work and politics‚ would flock in large numbers to tradwife influencers. No doubt the online accounts are more intense in their expressions of femininity‚ homemaking‚ or anti-feminist sentiment than the average follower‚ but then‚ this is always the case with influencers. For Gen Z women who have observed the unhappy zero-sum game that is the battle of the sexes‚ many feel that the modern world‚ for all its promises‚ has failed them. They’re looking for an older‚ and truer‚ model for how to live a good life. Or‚ as Carmel Richardson said‚ “There are too many elders who give bad advice about marriage and family. I am trying to become the matriarch I want to see in the world.” Similarly‚ it’s worth asking why this movement provokes many others to mockery or disgust. As one influencer said‚ “What if their husband leaves them? Then how will they support themselves?” For women who grew up observing the impact of no-fault divorce‚ family breakdown‚ the sexual revolution‚ and the rigid careerism of the 1990s‚ it seems as though their plan for survival is to depend on no one‚ especially a man‚ to provide for them. The exhaustion and subsequent disenchantment this has produced in Gen Z is enough to spark a counterrevolution. The harm is not borne equally‚ either. As both Aaron Renn and Mary Harrington have pointed out‚ the current workforce has meant that for elite or upper-class women to work‚ they require other women‚ who would rather stay home with their own children‚ to serve as nannies and day care workers just to make ends meet. Many tradwife accounts encourage women‚ insofar as they can‚ to return to their own homes and release poorer women from the expectation of handling their child care‚ cooking‚ or cleaning. Notably‚ a Refinery29 article recognized this appeal for minority women: “Traditional marriage is the key to Black women’s liberation from being overworked‚ economic insecurity‚ and the stress of trying to survive in a world hostile to our survival and existence.” Implicit in the tradwife model‚ of course‚ is the financial and ideological support of a husband. It requires husband and wife to work together in distinct roles toward a shared vision—one that ideally allows each the margin to flourish in their given space. In this way‚ tradwives represent a sort of anti-fragility that‚ in the words of Nassim Nicholas Taleb‚ is not merely resilient in the face of difficulty‚ but grows stronger because of it. At their best‚ tradwives require more of the men around them. Rather than trying to replace the men in their lives (father‚ husband‚ perhaps employer) when they fail‚ such tradwives hold them accountable to provide‚ protect and grow within the family. Few things could sound scarier to a woman who has been failed by a man she thought she could trust through divorce‚ unfaithfulness‚ or abandonment. Nonetheless‚ many women are realizing that the happiness they desire requires reliance upon a husband and other family members to succeed. Whether it’s a corporate girlie‚ an academic‚ or a tradwife‚ each dreams of and relies upon a wealthy patron to support the lifestyle she wants to live. While some tradwives denounce all work “outside the home‚” many run small businesses‚ write or blog‚ and contrary to the Luddite stereotype‚ manage savvy social media influencer accounts. They take the time and flexibility that their lifestyle offers and seek creative uses of their time that bless their family‚ their community‚ and the causes they care about. Certainly‚ some aspects of the tradwife movement range from alt-right pagan beliefs to unrealistic forms of live-action role-play. At the heart of it‚ however‚ is a positive attempt by many women to embrace marriage and motherhood. Countercultural movements tend to overcorrect to provide the next generation of women with a moderate option between the two ideological extremes of careerism and the rejection of all “paid work.” For Gen Z‚ the result may be that women receive the flexibility and support to pursue a family and work amenable to their goals and the demands of each season. Unforgivable Sin: On the Exploitation of Innocence

Children are not property to be exploited; they are gifts from God—and what do you do with a gift? You cherish it‚ grow it and protect it. Yet‚ in a world marred by moral decay and power imbalances‚ the most vulnerable among us‚ children‚ often fall prey to the darkest desires of influential figures. The Jeffrey Epstein case‚ among others‚ lays bare a troubling pattern: a fascination among certain powerful individuals for underage boys and girls. This is not a new phenomenon; history is replete with instances where those in positions of power‚ be they priests or potentates‚ have succumbed to this heinous proclivity.  But why? The answer perhaps lies in the corrupting nature of power itself. As Lord Acton famously said‚ “Power tends to corrupt‚ and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” In the case of the exploitation of children‚ power becomes a vehicle not just for corruption but for the perversion of the most sacred trust. Let us consider priests‚ traditionally seen as moral guides and protectors of the flock. When they succumb to such vile desires‚ it is not only a betrayal of their sacred duty but an affront to the very tenets of faith and morality they are meant to uphold. Similarly‚ when influential figures like Epstein and his band of unknown powerful figures‚ most of whom are men‚ engage in such acts‚ it reflects a gross abuse of power and privilege‚ a twisted assertion of dominance over the most defenseless. This reprehensible behavior is not just a violation of law but a moral abomination that should be met with the severest of punishments. In this context‚ the call for the death penalty for child predators might seem a fitting retribution. The argument is straightforward: Such an act is so fundamentally against the natural order‚ so damaging to the very fabric of society‚ and so irreparably harmful to the victims that only the most extreme form of punishment would suffice. As we grapple with these dark realities‚ we must remember that the true measure of a society is found in how it treats its most vulnerable. In safeguarding our children‚ in nurturing their growth and in fiercely defending their innocence‚ we uphold not just a legal duty but a moral imperative. For‚ in the words of Charles Dickens: “In the little world in which children have their existence‚ there is nothing so finely perceived and so finely felt as injustice.” Children‚ the purest embodiment of innocence‚ should be the cherished treasures of our society‚ protected from the snares of those who would do them harm. However‚ as cases like Epstein’s tragically illustrate‚ often the mighty have the most depraved of desires‚ exploiting the defenseless and leaving an indelible scar on the tapestry of humanity. Why do such abominations occur‚ especially among the powerful? The intoxicating nature of power distorts the moral compass‚ leading some to exploit the innocent in a perverse display of control. This is not only a breach of legal boundaries but‚ more critically‚ a profound moral failure. As Edmund Burke wisely noted‚ “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Thus‚ it becomes imperative for society to act decisively. The psychological and societal impact of these crimes is catastrophic. The betrayal of a child’s trust can fracture the foundation of their world‚ often leaving lifelong emotional and mental scars. Beyond the individual tragedy‚ such violations erode public trust in institutions and figures of authority‚ undermining the social fabric that binds communities. In facing this grim reality‚ our justice system must be unyielding in its pursuit of those who prey on children. While some advocate the ultimate punishment‚ the death penalty‚ we must tread cautiously. The pursuit of justice must be balanced with the principles of fairness and the potential for rehabilitation. As Alexander Pope eloquently put it‚ “To err is human‚ to forgive divine.” Our approach must reflect a balance between the gravity of the crime and the principles of a just and humane society. The solution lies not only in punishment but in prevention and education. It requires creating environments where children are informed‚ empowered and encouraged to speak out. We must cultivate a culture that prioritizes the welfare and protection of children above all else. The exploitation of children by the powerful is a stark reminder of the moral and ethical failings that can permeate any society. Our response must be resolute‚ not only in punishing the guilty but in safeguarding the innocence of the young. Through vigilant protection‚ education‚ and moral guidance‚ we can strive to build a world where the innocence of childhood is not just a fleeting moment but a lasting legacy treasured and protected by all. [WATCH] President Trump Says He Already Made His Vice President Selection

President Trump said during his Fox News town hall Wednesday night that he already knows who will be his vice president. “If you are the nominee‚ which I know you expect to be‚ who would be in the running for vice president?” Martha MacCallum asked. “I can’t tell you that‚ really‚” Trump responded. “I know who it’s going to be‚” he added. “Can you give us a hint?” Bret Baier asked. “We’ll do another show sometime‚” Trump said. MacCallum asked Trump if he would consider any of the other GOP presidential candidates as his vice president. “Would you be open to mending fences?” she asked. “Oh sure‚ I will. I’ve already started to like Christie better‚” Trump responded. Christie dropped out of the GOP primary shortly before the Iowa town hall. WATCH: The Des Moines Register reports: Former President Donald Trump said at a Fox News town hall in Iowa on Wednesday evening that he’s already decided on a vice presidential running mate for the general election‚ but declined to name the person. Asked about the process of selecting his partner on the 2024 ticket if nominated‚ Trump said‚ “I know who it’s going to be.” With the Iowa Caucuses just five days away‚ Trump answered questions from Iowans and Fox anchors Bret Baier and Martha McCallum at the Iowa Events Center. Just a few miles away‚ CNN was hosting a debate at Drake University featuring former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Trump was invited to the debate but declined‚ as he has with each debate this campaign cycle. Chris LaCivita and Jason Miller‚ senior campaign advisers to Trump‚ told reporters after the town hall that he had spoken to close allies about what “qualities” he had been looking for in a candidate but had not explicitly discussed names. They declined to elaborate on those qualities. “That’s an issue that we really have not in any great detail discussed‚” LaCivita said. “I’m sure when that times comes‚ everybody will know who it is.” Trump’s vice president in his first term‚ Mike Pence‚ launched a challenge to him this year but dropped out of the race when he failed to garner significant support in Iowa and other early states. “She’s Gonna Get Smoked‚” Chris Christie Says About Nikki Haley On Hot Mic

“She’s Gonna Get Smoked‚” Chris Christie Says About Nikki Haley On Hot Mic

According to the Daily Beast‚ Chris Christie was caught on a hot mic talking about Nikki Haley’s chances against Donald Trump. The former New Jersey governor said Nikki Haley is “gonna get smoked.” Christie made the comments right before he got on stage to announce the suspension of his presidential campaign. BREAKING: Republican Presidential Candidate Drops Out "While waiting for Chris Christie announcement‚ he can be heard on a hot mic criticizing Nikki Haley while talking to someone‚" Fox News national correspondent Bill Melugin said. “She’s gonna get smoked‚” Christie said. “You and I both know it‚ she’s not up to this‚" he continued. "He also claims DeSantis called him‚ then feed is cut‚" Melugin commented. LISTEN: BREAKING: While waiting for Chris Christie announcement‚ he can be heard on a hot mic criticizing @NikkiHaley while talking to someone. “She’s gonna get smoked‚” he says. “You and I both know it‚ she’s not up to this.” He also claims DeSantis called him‚ then feed is cut. pic.twitter.com/3Lrz2t6BQ8 — Bill Melugin (@BillMelugin_) January 10‚ 2024 Daily Beast reports: First‚ Christie began by defending his campaign’s effort despite a disappointing performance that culminated in his decision to drop out on Wednesday. “People don't wanna hear it‚ Wayne‚” Christie told Wayne MacDonald‚ a longtime supporter and former New Hampshire Republican Party chairman. “We know we're right‚ but they don't wanna hear it. We couldn't have been any clearer‚ we couldn't have worked any harder... And look‚ she's spent $68 million so far‚ just on TV... and we've spent 12. I mean‚ who's punching above their weight?" Christie did not say Haley’s name‚ but it was obvious he was talking about her. The former New Jersey governor then added insult to injury for Haley‚ who many anti-Trump Republicans believe could upset Trump in New Hampshire with a Christie endorsement. “She's gonna get smoked‚” Christie said of Haley. “You and I both know it‚ she’s not up to this.” As MacDonald was about to hear—along with several hundred others on the livestream feed—Christie was indeed resigned to his fate. Then the candidate brought up another rival‚ Ron DeSantis. Christie said DeSantis called him‚ “petrified that I would…” before the sound abruptly cut out. The campaign removed the video from YouTube a few minutes later. The Christie campaign did not immediately return a request for comment. DeSantis posted on X that he agreed Nikki Haley would get smoked. I agree with Christie that Nikki Haley is “going to get smoked.” — Ron DeSantis (@RonDeSantis) January 10‚ 2024 From POLITICO: Christie has made no secret of his modest-to-low opinion of Haley’s campaign. For weeks‚ he had declined calls by her boosters to leave the race‚ arguing that she — and others — had not shown any backbone in standing up to former President Donald Trump. The two have not spoken in recent weeks‚ two people familiar with the matter confirmed. A person familiar with his thinking said Christie changed his mind only in the past 24 hours. “Part of the reasoning‚” the person added‚ “was he had no interest in allowing Haley or others to use him as a scapegoat.” As for potentially backing Haley‚ the person added‚ “it’s clear he won’t be endorsing.” “Chris Christie has been a friend for many years‚” Haley said in a statement in response to Christie dropping out. “I commend him on a hard-fought campaign.” On the hot mic‚ Christie was also caught musing about Florida Governor Ron DeSantis‚ who he said had called him‚ “petrified.” It’s unclear what DeSantis was petrified of.
