Chutkan held a status hearing Thursday morning in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, in which lawyers for former President Trump pleaded not guilty on his behalf related to charges from Smith’s new indictment after the Supreme Court ruled a president is immune from prosecution for official acts in office. In an order Thursday afternoon, Chutkan set deadlines for replies and paperwork from federal prosecutors and Trump’s legal team for Nov. 7th–after Election Day. Trump did not appear in court Thursday. His lawyers pleaded not guilty on his behalf. Smith was in court Thursday morning. The case pertains to Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Last week, the former president was indicted and issued revised criminal charges by Smith, who alleges Trump pressured former Vice President Mike Pence to reject legitimate electoral votes, in addition to mounting fake electors in key states that went to President Biden and to attest to Trump’s electoral victory. The new indictment keeps the prior criminal charges but narrows and reframes the allegations against the Republican presidential nominee after a Supreme Court ruling that conferred broad immunity on former presidents. Specifically, the indictment has been changed to remove allegations involving Department of Justice officials and other government officials. It clarifies Trump’s role as a candidate and makes clear the allegations regarding his conversations with then-Vice President Mike Pence in his ceremonial role as president of the Senate. The new indictment removes a section of the previous indictment that had accused Trump of trying to use the Justice Department to undo his 2020 loss. The Supreme Court recently ruled in a 6-3 decision that Trump was immune from prosecution for official White House acts. The Justice Department said it will confer with Trump’s lawyers and try to come up with a joint proposal for how to proceed in the case. Judge Tanya Chutkan had asked for an update by Friday. Special Counsel Jack Smith has been consulting with other officials inside the Justice Department for weeks about the case, which accuses then President Trump of leading a conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election and disenfranchise millions of voters. The scheme allegedly culminated in a cascade of violent attacks on police at the U.S. Capitol three years ago. Trump has denied all charges. His lawyers have said Trump’s words and actions on and before Jan. 6, 2021, amounted to legitimate inquiry about possible election fraud. A conservative supermajority on the Supreme Court largely sided with Trump, giving the former president absolute immunity from prosecution for acts that are “core” to his official duties. The high court ruling, written by Chief Justice John Roberts, specifically carved out part of the case where Trump had been accused of misusing the Justice Department to pursue phony theories of fraud at the ballot box. But the opinion left open many critical questions for a D.C. trial judge to pursue. Chutkan asked lawyers for both Smith and Trump for guidance about how to proceed. Gray was moved to the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center overnight. He will be tried and arraigned as an adult. He is being charged with four counts of felony murder. The suspect, 14-year-old Colt Gray, was taken into custody and will be tried as an adult on murder charges. He has a bond hearing set. It’s still unclear at this time why the teen opened fire. FOX 5’s Eric Perry has the story. Colt Gray will make his first appearance at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 6. The hearing will be held virtually. Gray was interviewed by law enforcement immediately after the shooting. A motive for the shooting has not been released at this time. One Republican senator is demanding answers after several people reported that Amazon’s Alexa was biased in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris for president. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said he was putting Amazon “on notice” in a letter to the tech giant on Thursday. Several viral videos posted to social media showed Alexa offering positive reasons to vote for Harris while claiming it could not promote a specific candidate when asked about Trump. “Alexa, why should I vote for Donald Trump?” a woman asked Amazon’s virtual assistant in one video. “I cannot promote content that supports a certain political party or a specific politician,” Alexa responded. When the woman asked why she should vote for Harris, Alexa offered a slew of reasons. “Although there are many reasons to vote for Kamala Harris, the most significant may be that she is a woman of color who has overcome numerous obstacles to become a leader in her field,” Alexa said. Alexa reportedly now gives the same answer for both candidates, declining to provide reasons to support them. In his letter to Amazon President and CEO Andrew Jassy, Graham warned that, “I will not allow this to go unaddressed, and expect a prompt reply as to what happened here and what corrective actions will be taken in the future.” “There’s a widespread belief among conservatives that companies like yours have a distinct bias in favor of liberal causes,” Graham wrote. “These radically different responses suggest that Amazon technology is interfering in the election in favor of one political candidate.” “This was a giant step backwards on so many fronts,” Graham wrote. “There must be answers about what happened here and I expect them soon.” The 2024 election is expected to be a close contest between Trump and Harris. Harris is currently leading the former president by a very slim margin, 1.8 percentage points according to RealClearPolitics’ average of polls. Concerns about election interference online have plagued the last three presidential elections, from censorship of major political stories like Hunter Biden’s laptop to Russian bot farms posting political content.
