Joe Lieberman‚ centrist in name only

Concerning the late Joe Lieberman‚ the former U.S. senator from my onetime home state of Connecticut‚ CNN offers this information: On many issues‚ like abortion and economic policy‚ Lieberman was a mainstream Democrat. And he will be remembered as one of the last major statesmen of an era when true bipartisanship felt possible in Washington‚ before today’s polarized times. Lieberman‚ who was my contemporary and someone I admired when he first ran for the Senate in 1988‚ was undoubtedly a nice man. Everyone who knew him testifies to that fact and‚ above all‚ to the gentle‚ courteous way in which he discussed divisive policy issues. Lieberman faithfully observed the Jewish Sabbath and was proud of his religious heritage. He also scolded his fellow Democrat Bill Clinton over his “disgraceful” affair with Monica Lewinsky‚ although Lieberman later refused to join senators in publicly censuring the president’s act. It’s high time that commentators who deplore the loss of kindly centrists look reality in the face. We know that in 2008‚ Lieberman made himself persona non grata to his party by openly supporting his friend John McCain as the Republican nominee for president. At that time there were calls in the Democratic Party to expel Lieberman. Already in 2006‚ the party had nominated a leftist Democrat‚ Ned Lamont‚ to run against him for his Senate seat. Lieberman was enormously popular in Connecticut‚ however. He prevailed in a three-way race and remained in Washington. He also clearly had a bipartisan fan base. Back in 2000 Lieberman ran as the vice presidential running mate of Democrat Al Gore. But John McCain on the Republican side is said to have regretted not choosing Joe as his vice presidential candidate in his 2008 presidential run. Going through the milestones in Lieberman’s career‚ journalists and news anchors emphasize his balanced‚ centrist positions. We are told‚ perhaps most explicitly by Bret Baier and Brit Hume on Fox News‚ that Lieberman was a true “moderate” who reached across aisles and avoided harsh rhetoric. We should regret his passing because his “centrist‚” gentlemanly politics belong to an age when we were not bedeviled by our present uncompromising partisanship. Indeed‚ Lieberman published a book arguing for the “centrist solution.” What Lieberman devotees usually overlook is that Lieberman never really stood between two partisan blocs. As CNN properly points out‚ he was a very conventional Democrat on social and economic issues. No matter how Sabbath-observant he was‚ he endorsed his party’s position on abortion. He was cool with racial quotas and supported gay marriage‚ even while expressing private reservations. His “conservatism” centered on his passionate attachment to Israel and his markedly neoconservative positions on foreign policy. Those were the views that pushed him into supporting John McCain in 2008‚ someone with whose foreign policy lined up perfectly with his own. I can’t think of many domestic issues on which Joe broke from his party‚ although his personality was certainly easier to take than that of Chuck Schumer‚ Nancy Pelosi‚ or the perpetually obnoxious Eric Swalwell‚ Adam Schiff‚ and Jamaal Bowman. Joe was adored in Connecticut‚ as Bret Baier reminded his listeners. But that affection was due in large part to Lieberman’s ideological compatibility with one of the bluest states in the country. If Joe were equally nice but held the political opinions of‚ say‚ Ted Cruz‚ he wouldn’t have been elected to any important political post in Connecticut. It was not his “centrism” but his being positioned on the left‚ while being vocally pro-Israel‚ that made him a political natural in his state. Perhaps for those who liked that mixture‚ it was the height of moderateness‚ but for most conservative observers it was something less appealing. This is not to belittle a fine gentleman whose passing I mourn. But I think it’s high time that commentators whom I hear deploring the loss of kindly centrists who brought us all together look reality in the face. Recent congressional centrists‚ whether Joe Lieberman‚ Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.)‚ or Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.)‚ have not exactly fit the description of their adulators. They have usually voted with the left on social and most economic issues‚ even if they have gone their own way every now and then on certain questions. Of course‚ these deviations occur infrequently and usually to the disproportionately loud cheers of establishment Republicans. It’s also unclear what “centrism” means. In the last 40 years‚ the politics of the United States and of most Western countries has slid very far toward both authoritarian administration and the woke left. Meanwhile governments have taken measures in the name of fighting “hate” to control our lives and speech. What is the “centrist” position in dealing with this historical development? What is the “centrist” position when it comes to allowing conservatives to resist the cultural revolution that our government has helped unleash? I’m not sure Lieberman and other “centrists” have had answers to these vexing questions. But then I’m not sure where the political or cultural center is at this moment‚ either.

Texas judge orders release of illegal aliens after they mobbed National Guard troops‚ rioted

Texas judge orders release of illegal aliens after they mobbed National Guard troops‚ rioted

A migrant horde largely comprising military-age men from Venezuela stormed the U.S. border on March 21‚ attacking Texas National Guard soldiers and destroying American property in El Paso. Even though federal immigration officials were reportedly uncooperative‚ Texas managed to arrest a number of the rioters. Rather than hold the illegal aliens accountable‚ however‚ Magistrate Judge Humberto Acosta ordered that they be set loose in the U.S. "on their own recognizance." Invaders riot Blaze News previously reported that an angry mob of foreign nationals breached a razor-wire barrier at Gate 36‚ then overwhelmed a group of Texas National Guard soldiers who ultimately elected not to open fire. Today down in El Paso I witnessed one of the wildest scenes I’ve ever seen in my time covering the border. National Guard troops were attempting to ‘push back’ male migrants hoping to be admitted into the U.S. when the crowd grew impatient and surged forward‚ tearing down razor… — (@) Another video shows illegal aliens in the area attempting to steal past razor wire and into the U.S. Hundreds of migrants were pushed south of the concertina wire in the middle of the night by Texas National Guard. Hours later they again breached the concertina and made a rush for the border wall in El Paso‚ Texas. #Border #Texas — (@) The incident reportedly kicked off when Texas National Guard soldiers allegedly separated some women and children while attempting to create smaller groups for processing. Hundreds of foreign nationals seized upon this as an excuse to riot and overwhelm the guardsmen. A National Guard source told the New York Post that one migrant attempted to grab a soldier's firearm. Other migrants were apparently armed with knives and other stabbing utensils. "These people were willing to assault military‚" said the source. "They were willing to assault law enforcement. They have complete disregard for our laws." Following the incident‚ Abbott announced that Texas had deployed 700 additional Texas National Guard troops along with 200 members of the new Texas Tactical Border Force. Invaders arrested Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) indicated the incident was contained by the Texas National Guard and Texas Department of Public Safety‚ adding that the DPS was "instructed to arrest every illegal immigrant involved for criminal trespass &; destruction of property." Over 70 illegal aliens involved in the riot were arrested. Texas authorities reportedly identified over 200 additional suspected rioters‚ but federal immigration authorities have failed to cooperate. One migrant‚ 21-year-old Honduran Junior Evaristo Benitez‚ was thrown into the El Paso County jail. Benitez‚ facing possible charges including assault on a public servant‚ is accused of stomping on a guardsman's knee "purposefully and with malice‚" according to court documents. Invaders set loose Magistrate Judge Acosta chastised the El Paso District Attorney's Office during an online teleconference bond hearing Sunday for suggesting prosecutors were not ready to proceed with detention hearings for each of the alleged rioters‚ reported the El Paso Times. "So if the DA's office is telling me that they are not ready to go‚ what we're going to do is we're going to release all these individuals on their own recognizance‚" said Acosta. Acosta did not indicate how many illegal aliens had been booked on a charge of "riot participation" and how many he would ultimately have released‚ but he noted Sunday that "hundreds of arrestees" had a right to individual detention hearings within 48 hours. The judge rejected a request by Assistant District Attorney Ashley Martinez for a continuance to have the hearings at a later date‚ reported the Times. Another hearing is expected to take place Monday for other individuals facing charges in relation to the riot. Extra to seeking the release of the rioters‚ Acosta reportedly granted the release of two other illegal aliens who were jailed for allegedly cutting border fencing. The local paper emphasized that the arrestees will remain jailed if there are U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement holds blocking their release. ICE previously told the New York Post that it is holding over 200 illegal aliens. Response The incident was roundly highlighted as yet another example of the fallout of the Biden administration's mismanagement of the border and the type of characters flooding into the nation by the millions. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R) said‚ "Every American should witness this chilling footage. This is the result of the Biden Administration refusing to secure our border and protect America." Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) said‚ "This assault on our sovereignty is an invasion at the invitation of Joe Biden." The Biden White House attempted to displace blame‚ suggesting congressional Republicans were responsible for the border crisis. "When the former President told Congressional Republicans to block the bipartisan border security agreement – he said to blame him for it‚" a White House spokesman told Fox News. "Well he got his wish‚ and the result was chaos after Governor Abbott's Operational Lone Star and razorwire were overrun yesterday. While we cannot comment on individual cases‚ anyone who does not have a legal basis to remain in the United States is promptly removed." Like Blaze News? NC State alumni report more than 150 cancer cases possibly linked to contaminants in campus building

North Carolina State University continues to investigate how many students and alumni have been exposed to alarming levels of polychlorinated biphenyls — a possible carcinogen‚ according to Fox News Digital. The school shut down a campus building in November 2023 that contained toxic PCBs.There have been more than 150 cancer cases reported by those who attended classes at Poe Hall. The concerns were raised in November of last year‚ which prompted the school to shut down the building. The report mentioned that the Environmental Protection Agency detected that PCB levels were 38 times the standards for building materials. The toxic element was discovered in five rooms around the building.Christie Lewis‚ an NC State alumnus‚ told Fox News Digital‚ "I was finishing up my finals‚ and I was going in for a physical at the health center. ... I was having night sweats for weeks and weeks before this‚ and I could not figure out what was happening.""I was having to get up in the middle of night and change clothes completely. And then I would fall asleep. And I had to put a towel down. It honestly took me weeks to even tell my husband about them because I kept on forgetting about it because it was just in the middle of the night‚" Lewis added.Lewis attended NC State from 2007 to 2012. While she started studying business‚ she eventually ended up in education‚ where she took classes at Poe Hall. She studied in the building "for about four years‚" according to the report. While in college‚ she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Just months after the diagnosis‚ she discovered a lump in her throat and was diagnosed with angiosarcoma‚ according to the New York Post."And so just as I'm finishing up my finals and my papers‚ I'm going to see an endocrinologist and they're doing a biopsy of my neck‚ and that's traumatic‚" Lewis said. "They don't sedate you or anything. They just kind of shove a huge needle into your throat and jab it around everywhere."Though Lewis understood that some people just get cancer‚ she became concerned after discovering that the number of cancer diagnoses by NC State alumni was three times the number of all cancer cases in Wake County."I could have never made that connection by myself because I didn't know anybody else. I was the only one in my little cohort of classmates who had cancer when I was in college‚" she said. "And I just thought that something was just wrong with my body. That something was wrong with me. I have four siblings‚ and everybody's so healthy except for me."It is uncertain if those who have been diagnosed with cancer will take action against the university. The EPA says the following about PCBs:PCBs have been demonstrated to cause a variety of adverse health effects. They have been shown to cause cancer in animals as well as a number of serious non-cancer health effects in animals‚ including: effects on the immune system‚ reproductive system‚ nervous system‚ endocrine system and other health effects. Studies in humans support evidence for potential carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects of PCBs. The different health effects of PCBs may be interrelated. Alterations in one system may have significant implications for the other systems of the body. The potential health effects of PCB exposure are discussed in greater detail below. Like Blaze News? iPhone 16 battery sizes just leaked for all four models

Corroborating a previous leak‚ a Weibo user posted the possible iPhone 16 battery capacity for all four phones in the upcoming lineup. This information could be considered great news for most people planning to upgrade‚ although those waiting for the iPhone 16 Plus model might be disappointed at an apparent battery capacity decrease. According to the leaker‚ these are the possible iPhone 16 battery capacities: iPhone 16: 3‚561mAh iPhone 16 Plus: 4‚006mAh iPhone 16 Pro: 3‚355mAh iPhone 16 Pro Max: 4‚676mAh Except for the iPhone 16 Plus‚ all other models will get bigger batteries‚ as the current iPhone 15 features a 3‚349mAh battery. For example‚ the iPhone 15 Pro Max features a 4‚422mAh battery‚ which means the next generation will have the best battery life ever. Even iPhone 16 Pro users can celebrate. Previously‚ the possible battery capacity for the iPhone 16 Pro was unknown‚ but now it seems it's 3‚355mAh compared to 3‚290mAh from the current generation. As an iPhone 15 Pro user‚ I'm very disappointed with its battery‚ and I'm not sure this slightly bigger battery is enough to improve my usage. Still‚ Apple might be increasing the battery capacity due to an internal structure redesign that doesn't require an L-shaped battery anymore. Besides that‚ we have collected other rumors about the iPhone 16 battery life. For example‚ leaker KosutamiSan believes Apple will improve battery life on the next generation of iPhones by adding a graphene thermal system to improve cooling. They wrote on X: “Apple is actively working on the graphene thermal system of iPhone 16 Series to solve the existing heating problem. And the batter of Pro series would change to a metal shell for the same reason.” If that turns out to be accurate‚ we could have improved battery life for the Pro phones‚ as both iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro models don’t seem to hold the charge as well as the iPhone 13 Pro models did. BGR will keep following the latest iPhone 16 rumors. Don't Miss: iPhone 16: Everything we know so far The post iPhone 16 battery sizes just leaked for all four models appeared first on BGR.
