The man in the suit is Bruce McCandless II. He has provided some details behind the Feb. 7‚ 1984‚ photograph. Bruce‚ in an interview with The Guardian‚ explained that he and a fellow astronaut moved freely because they were strapped into Manned Maneuvering Units. "It was a wonderful feeling‚ a mix of personal elation and professional pride: it had taken many years to get to that point‚" Bruce said. And I stayed alongside the shuttle the whole time‚ moving 100 yards one way‚ 100 yards back‚" Bruce stated. During his multi-hour walk in outer space‚ Bruce was moving at a mind-blowing rate of speed. I was traveling at more than 18‚000 miles an hour‚" Bruce said. "But wasn't aware of it because the shuttle was going at the same speed. It was only when I looked at the Earth that I could tell we were moving fairly rapidly."
