Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) defended former President Donald Trump over the weekend after a Manhattan jury convicted him on numerous felony counts last week in what many have said was a politically-motivated prosecution. Cotton made the remarks during a Sunday interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press” with guest host Peter Alexander. “I disagree with the jury’s verdict here,” Cotton said. “A jury can only act within the constraints that a judge puts on it, and this case was rigged from the very beginning. You had Alvin Bragg, who campaigned on getting Donald Trump. You had the judge, who’s a literal Biden donor, and at every turn he ruled in favor of the prosecution. But as Donald Trump said, the real verdict is going to come on Election Day, and it’s going to come from the American people.” Cotton noted that the judge “introduced evidence that was highly, highly inflammatory and prejudicial” and “didn’t allow President Trump to put on certain evidence and witnesses.” “He never even insisted the prosecution reveal the alleged underlying crime for which Donald Trump supposedly covered up in – in bookkeeping entries,” he noted. “At every turn the judge put his finger on the scales, practically forcing the jury to find – to reach this outcome.” He said that the American people’s verdict would be based on things like not being able to pay their rent or put food on the table for their kids. “The border is chaos. We’ve got war all around the world,” he said. “The reason why you have this weaponization of the legal system is because Joe Biden can’t defend his weak, failed record, and that they – the American people see through it and they remember that Donald Trump brought peace and prosperity to this country.” He later called Trump “an innocent man who did nothing wrong” and said that “there’s no question Donald Trump should win on appeal.” WATCH:

Former Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., who was Alvin Bragg’s predecessor, said over the weekend that he does not believe that the court will sentence former President Donald Trump to jail after he was convicted on 34 felony counts last week. Vance made the remarks during a Sunday interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press” while talking about what potential sentence could be imposed on Trump if his conviction is not overturned during appeals. “These are the lowest-level, nonviolent felonies,” said guest host Peter Alexander. “They are punishable by a fine, probation, or up to four years in prison. Donald Trump turned 78 this month. He’s almost 80. He has no prior record. Here’s what he said this morning in an interview with Fox on the topic of possible jail time.” Vance wouldn’t say whether or not he would recommend jail time because he didn’t think it was his place to comment. “If you ask me do I think the court will impose jail in this case, as I said to you I think yesterday, I think not,” he said. “But ultimately, that’s Judge Merchan’s decision. The president has made this a little more complicated by having been found in contempt ten times during the court, but I think that with the proximity of the Republican convention four days after his sentencing and then if he is the candidate for the Republican Party the proximity of the election, I would be surprised that he would be sentenced to any imprisonment.” “Now, that said, the court could adjourn sentencing until after the general election and then essentially decide then,” he continued. 60 WWII vets who fought in D-Day landed in Paris, France, this weekend as part of a special anniversary celebration, and they were met with a heartfelt and moving hero’s welcome. Fox News posted footage of the vets as they streamed through the airport shortly after landing. Men as old as 107 greeted a large crowd that was gathered with American Flags and cheers, and they stood for a special performance of The Star-Spangled Banner. After meeting at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, the heroes also enjoyed a special parade in their honor. “We’re honored to play a part in helping this group of heroic veterans return to Normandy,” AA COO David Seymour said in a statement. “This special journey is not only an expression of our gratitude for these heroes and the sacrifices they made for our freedom, but we hope to help shine a light on their extraordinary stories and preserve their legacies for generations to come.” While in France, the vets will take a few days to explore Paris before heading to Normandy where they will visit “key historical sites,” watch commemorative concerts, and be part of “special ceremonies to honor the courage and sacrifice of all who served during World War II.” On the anniversary of D-Day (June 6), there will be a ceremony at the Normandy American Cemetery, which is home to the almost 9400 U.S. servicemen who lost their lives as they fought along the beaches to liberate France from German forces.
