California police released startling body camera footage from a deadly shootout outside of a grocery store in San Diego where a police sergeant was shot in the head and a suspect was killed. Police were called to a Ralphs supermarket on Dec. 7 at about 11:30 p.m. by a woman who said she saw a car in the parking lot that had been stolen from her by a man who had also committed domestic violence. She said she had not confronted him because she believed he was armed. The video footage shows police chasing the man through the grocery store before he runs outside and into a cart stall with police following behind him. He jumps over the wall of the cart stall and shoots behind himself‚ striking the sergeant in the head. The man then fired at other officers‚ who fired back and killed him. The man was later identified as 46-year-old Curtis Harris. The video shows the moment an officer realized that Sgt. Anthony Elliot was down. "This was a very dangerous situation‚ multiple rounds being fired at officers‚" Police Chief David Nisleit said at the time. "The officers did a phenomenal job tonight. Obviously we have a sergeant in the hospital. That makes me emotional." Investigators said they recovered a .40 caliber handgun from the scene. Nisleit blamed soft prosecutorial standards for Harris being free to commit more crimes despite his violent criminal past. “It’s very frustrating for me to see a guy who’s got a repeated violent history continually getting out to only commit more violence‚” Nisleit said. “We‚ as a society‚ the state‚ this country‚ need to do better in protecting the community from people who repeatedly do violence.”Elliot still remains in a San Diego hospital recovering from the gunshot wound. Officials said he is unlikely to be released to go home in time for Christmas.
