Not that long ago‚ three men entered a gas station/convenience store at an exit off a highway. They quickly held the cashier at gunpoint‚ grabbed the cash from the register‚ and proceeded to shoot and kill everyone else in the store. That included the cashier and two other shoppers. That’s why I carry. If that was me shopping in that store and I had a weapon‚ I would have a fighting chance against those criminals. I’ve carried many sizes of pistols both concealed and not concealed. While I like to shoot multiple different guns and calibers‚ there is only one concealed-carry pistol that works for me as a defensive prepper. Everyone has different preferences and skill levels‚ so we’ll go over a few options. The Ruger LCP is my carry pistol but is not anywhere close to my favorite overall pistol. It is too small to shoot comfortably as a target pistol‚ is not very accurate‚ and is literally no fun to shoot. But those aren’t the criteria listed for CCW. My Smith &; Wesson M&;P 9mm serves as my favorite duty-carry accurate and fun pistol. The Ruger LCP is not like that! I’ve trained on it and dubbed it the “Noisy Cricket” (and that nickname stuck) because it is like the tiny gun in the movie “Men in Black”. It kicks hard and has a small grip. After extended shooting‚ the pistol can be felt between my thumb and forefinger. Here is everything you get with this pistol: Compact 2nd gen model of the celebrated LCP .380 ACP‚ 6 rounds 2.75″ barrel Compact polymer grip 11.2 ounces Even though it is not fun to shoot‚ it serves its purpose perfectly. Compacts and smaller won’t be your firearm of choice for long days at the range‚ but you’ll still want to train with them. As you can see in the picture of me carrying it‚ it is hard to spot. But the Fobus Evolution paddle holster makes it easy to get to. It is reliable and has never misfired (I keep it cleaned and oiled). You should add the optional extended magazine floor plate so that you get two fingers fully on the grip. That makes it much more shootable and accurate. The Ruger LCP is hard to spot‚ even on the belt. It holds 6 rounds in the magazine which should be plenty for a single event. With an expected max range of 7 yards‚ I won’t miss. Finally‚ load it with a good hollow point round. I use the 380ACP Federal Hydra-Shok 90gr Personal Defense round. When I practice‚ I use a target round with an extended magazine. With great value and an extremely compact profile‚ it’s easy to see why the Ruger LCP II tops the rest. 9mm Concealed Carry Pistol Sig Sauer P365 Smooth‚ Easy to Use‚ and Trusted This 9mm model from Sig‚ well known for accuracy and reliability‚ is one of the more popular choices for CCW among preppers. $499* at PSA *Price at time of publishing; check for price changes or sales. What to Look For It is crucial to me that the weapon I carry can’t easily be seen‚ but can be easy to draw and effectively stop a bad guy. Let’s break that down. To be hidden‚ it must be small. No big fat .45. Tiny‚ light‚ easy to carry‚ and easy to hide. “Easy to draw” means not buried in a holster in your pocket. It means using a paddle holster. To stop a bad guy‚ you need more than a .22 caliber. It must be reliable so it will shoot in an emergency. The best concealed carry pistols have a few features to look for: Value Reliability Stopping Power Size &; Weight Versatility When you get the right blend of these‚ you can find the perfect firearm for concealment. Value: Cost vs. Benefit The amount of money you spend on something like a gun shouldn’t blow out your entire budget. There is a huge price range for firearms and it can be tempting to go overkill on specific models and collections. You never want to spend too much money on one resource‚ even when it comes to personal security. It’s better to diversify your spending to make sure you are covered for a wide range of scenarios. Reliability What’s the point of a concealed carry weapon if it snags‚ jams‚ or misfires when your life is on the line? This is not the place to be cutting corners and going with an unreliable firearm. All handguns will need regular maintenance after shooting to prevent issues. Get a gun cleaning kit and make sure you know how to properly care for your weapon to keep its top-tier reliability. Stopping Power Caliber and ammo specifics have a lot to do with stopping power‚ but you can’t just use any ammo in any firearm. Larger calibers typically mean more stopping power‚ using the old formula of force = acceleration x mass. The downside to larger calibers‚ especially with handguns‚ is that they can reduce the number of rounds you store‚ accuracy from recoil‚ and cause hand fatigue. For compact concealed weapons we prioritize stopping power over all of these‚ but also want it to stay small enough to conceal easily. Size &; Weight One of the biggest factors with a CCW is the profile. The size needs to be small so you can tuck it away and not have it readily visible. That is the point of it being concealed- otherwise‚ you could just carry a full-sized firearm exposed on your hip or leg. Weight is another factor- once you get past a pound you can start to feel it regardless of the holster. With aluminum frames on compact and microcompact handguns‚ weight usually isn’t an issue. Versatility Versatility doesn’t have to go out the door with a CCW. You can still get great sights‚ extended magazines‚ and solid holsters for concealed weapons. Once you pick your firearm‚ you can usually find plenty of accessories to make it just how you want it. How to Carry a Concealed Pistol Just because you have a concealed carry permit does not necessarily mean you are qualified to carry a concealed pistol. Carrying concealed means you have a responsibility to know how to use that lethal weapon. Not just know the laws‚ rules‚ and conventions‚ but practice with the gun to be safe and effective when it is needed. You need to continue training and learning everything about your weapon. This will keep you from accidentally hurting yourself or other innocent people. Check your state laws every so often because they change. If going to another state‚ check to make sure there is a reciprocal agreement with your state and learn the details of the laws in that state. That will keep you out of legal trouble. Training? What do I mean by training for concealed carry? Go to your local range and take a class on it! Not just the class to get the permit‚ but a home defense or tactical situation class. They will teach you really how to use your weapon. If not a formal class‚ find an experienced shooter to help train you. The most important aspects of use are not to accidentally shoot yourself or innocents and to be able to draw and fire the pistol as intended. Simple conventions like only pointing it where you intend to shoot and keeping your finger off the trigger until just before shooting will become second nature. Draw training is essential. Many ranges won’t let you draw and shoot unless you are in a class that includes that. I practice draw training at home with an unloaded pistol‚ but there is no replacement for the real thing. That’s it. A simple gun with one purpose. I carry it with confidence‚ force myself to practice with it and train and prepare for potential emergencies. If you are worried about someone coming up to you and grabbing your gun off your side‚ I recommend a “soft-side carry” knife. I use the Ka-Bar TDI (See our full Ka-Bar TDI Review) which is specifically made for this purpose. I wear it on my back left. If someone lunges for my back right‚ I could use my left handle to quickly extract and employ the TDI. Who Needs a CCW? Every gun owner has their preferred weapons that satisfy their specific needs. Some hunt and use rifles designed for that. Some target shoot. Some buy for personal protection. That most likely means carrying a handgun. Carrying a loaded concealed handgun in public can be intimidating and even dangerous if not performed properly. Then why do it? Simply because it can literally save your life or the lives of other innocent victims. That’s my reason for carrying and the only valid reason I know of. If you need to drop an assailant without a massive risk of debilitating injury‚ and do so quickly‚ tasers are great… But‚ because these devices are so unique‚ most states have wildly varying laws concerning civilian possession and carry of them. If you want to make a Taser a part of your self-defense EDC‚ you’ll need to figure out these laws. Today we’re looking at Florida‚ and there is a lot to like! Keep reading‚ and I’ll tell you more below. Are Tasers Legal in Florida? Yes. Tasers are completely legal for law-abiding citizens in Florida. You don’t even need a concealed weapons permit to purchase or carry one. You may also take a taser anywhere that you have a legal‚ lawful right to be as long as it doessn’t violate any of the other states statutes. How Does Florida Define a Taser? Florida defines tasers as a unique category of weapon‚ one known as a dart firing stun gun. Florida defines a dart firing stun gun as any device that has one or more darts capable of transmitting an electrical current. Tasers might also potentially fit under the definition of electric weapon or device‚ meaning any device that through the application of electrical current is intended to be used for offensive or defensive purposes‚ the destruction of life or the infliction of injury. Properly used and in most cases‚ a taser will not inflict any permanent injury to the target to say nothing of a fatal injury and so accordingly will be defined most accurately as a dart firing stun gun under Florida state statutes. The exact definitions of both can be found in 790.001‚ included verbatim below for your convenience: 790.001 Definitions. As used in this chapter‚ except where the context otherwise requires: (…) (14) “Electric weapon or device” means any device which‚ through the application or use of electrical current‚ is designed‚ redesigned‚ used‚ or intended to be used for offensive or defensive purposes‚ the destruction of life‚ or the infliction of injury. (15) “Dart-firing stun gun” means any device having one or more darts that are capable of delivering an electrical current. (…) Can You Carry a Taser Openly in Florida? Yes‚ absolutely. Any citizen‚ be they a visitor or Florida resident‚ may lawfully carry a taser openly for the purposes of self-defense. This is readily clarified under 790.053 which covers the open carrying of weapons: 790.053 Open carrying of weapons. (1) Except as otherwise provided by law and in subsection (2)‚ it is unlawful for any person to openly carry on or about his or her person any firearm or electric weapon or device. It is not a violation of this section for a person licensed to carry a concealed firearm as provided in s. 790.06(1)‚ and who is lawfully carrying a firearm in a concealed manner‚ to briefly and openly display the firearm to the ordinary sight of another person‚ unless the firearm is intentionally displayed in an angry or threatening manner‚ not in necessary self-defense. (2) A person may openly carry‚ for purposes of lawful self-defense: (a) A self-defense chemical spray. (b) A nonlethal stun gun or dart-firing stun gun or other nonlethal electric weapon or device that is designed solely for defensive purposes. (3) Any person violating this section commits a misdemeanor of the second degree‚ punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083. Can You Carry a Taser Concealed in Florida? Yes‚ you can‚ and you don’t even need a concealed weapons permit to do it. This is often confused under 790.01 which specifies in paragraph one that any person who concealed carries an electric weapon or device is committing a first degree misdemeanor. But make sure you read the exceptions provided in subsection 3‚ which heading (b) provides that a person may carry for lawful self-defense‚ in a concealed manner‚ a non-lethal dart firing stun gun designed solely for defensive purposes. This is one issue that people commonly get wrong‚ so I’m including the relevant excerpt of the text below: 790.01 Unlicensed carrying of concealed weapons or concealed firearms. (1) Except as provided in subsection (3)‚ a person who is not licensed under s. 790.06 and who carries a concealed weapon or electric weapon or device on or about his or her person commits a misdemeanor of the first degree‚ punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083. (…) (3) This section does not apply to: (…) 2. A nonlethal stun gun or dart-firing stun gun or other nonlethal electric weapon or device that is designed solely for defensive purposes. (4) This section does not preclude any prosecution for the use of an electric weapon or device‚ a dart-firing stun gun‚ or a self-defense chemical spray during the commission of any criminal offense under s. 790.07‚ s. 790.10‚ s. 790.23‚ or s. 790.235‚ or for any other criminal offense. Where Can You Carry a Taser in Florida? You can carry your taser anywhere you have a legal‚ lawful right to be in Florida with a few exceptions… Most notably‚ you cannot carry your taser onto the grounds or other property of any school‚ and the school definition is quite a broad one in Florida‚ applying to elementary schools all the way up to colleges‚ universities and post-secondary education institutions. You also cannot carry your taser into any city‚ county‚ state or federal government building or into the secure area of any airport‚ typically defined as the area passed the security checkpoint and scanners. How Old Do You Have to Be to Possess a Taser in Florida? Anyone that is age 18 or older may legally possess a taser so long as they do not have any felony convictions on their record or misdemeanor crimes of assault or domestic violence‚ or any previous conviction of misuse of a taser or similar electric weapon. Also‚ there are some special statutes restricting tasers from the possession of anyone convicted of certain juvenile offenses that would have been categorized as felonies if the offender was an adult at the time the offense was committed. This restriction applies until the person is at least 24 years old‚ and depending on the crime and question does not necessarily mean they will have their right to own and possess a taser restore once they turn 24. If you were a young delinquent who turned your life around‚ you might need to consult with an attorney to look into getting your criminal record expunged in your civil rights are stored if you want a taser in Florida. Are Any Persons Restricted from Carrying a Taser in Florida? Yes. Florida specifically forbids any person to be in possession of a taser or other electric weapon or device: if they have been convicted of a felony in the state of Florida‚ if they were found to have committed a delinquent act that would have been a felony if committed by an adult offender by any such person under 24‚ if they have been convicted or committed any crime against the United States designated as a felony‚ or found guilty of any offense punishable by a prison term exceeding one year. A full list of persons prohibited from taser ownership and the restoration of such rights can be found in 790.23 of the Florida state statutes. When Can You Use a Taser in Florida for Self-Defense? Florida is definitely pro self-defense when it comes to citizens‚ and you’ll rarely find any state that is more permissive when it comes to tasers in civilian hands generally. However this doesn’t mean you can run around tazing people without good cause! The use of a taser is still considered force‚ and though a thorough discussion of the ethical use of force and self-defense and the legal ramifications of doing so is beyond the scope of this article‚ there are generally some clear-cut circumstances when it is okay‚ and not okay‚ to deploy your taser. Broadly speaking‚ you want to only use your taser when you genuinely feel in fear for your safety. This means that you reasonably‚ sincerely believe someone is going to imminently use unlawful force against you. As always‚ your use of force must be proportional to the force being used against you. If someone is threatening you with death or great bodily injury‚ the use of the Taser is absolutely justified. If someone is threatening to beat you‚ that is punch or kick you‚ the use of the taser is almost certainly justified. If someone has it simply touched you or committed simple battery by throwing a drink in your face or something like that‚ the use of your taser is probably not justified. Likewise‚ you can never‚ ever use your Taser to scare or intimidate someone‚ to win an argument or in response to an insult or verbal harassment. Understand this: tasers are typically thought of as non-lethal weapons‚ but they are more properly classified as less-lethal weapons‚ meaning they are a lot less likely to be lethal compared to a knife or gun. You will be responsible for the outcome whenever you deploy your taser‚ whether it is justified or not‚ so keep that in mind! Are there Any Other Laws Concerning Tasers to Know about in Florida? Not really. There are specific statutes covering the criminal use of tasers‚ carrying a taser for any illegal purpose‚ and so forth‚ but these can be broadly lumped under the admonishment to not be a criminal!
