I write this week as a very different man than I was when writing my last column. Then‚ I was merely engaged; now‚ after the single greatest week of my life culminated in the single greatest day and night of my life‚ I am married. I am filled with immense‚ overwhelming gratitude. My wife and I are blessed with wonderful family and loyal friends—in America and across the world. We are surrounded by those who love and care for us‚ and we are not wanting for material comforts. Perhaps most important‚ we are anchored by our Judaism and strive to live lives—and‚ God willing‚ build a family—rooted in a particular meaning and purpose‚ and guided by a particular set of values and customs. Even at the very beginning of our lifelong journey together‚ we therefore already have everything we truly need. Unfortunately‚ marriage these days is something of a countercultural phenomenon. According to a 2020 Pew Research survey‚ the percentage of 23- to 38-year-old Americans who are married steadily decreases by generation: 81% for the Silent Generation‚ 61% for baby boomers‚ 53% for Generation X‚ and 44% for millennials. The percentage of unmarried Americans 15 years or older has risen from 23% in 1950 to 34% in 2022. No one should expect Gen Z to stem the tide‚ either. According to a Thriving Center of Psychology survey‚ 41% of Gen Z men and a whopping 52% of Gen Z women believe that marriage is an “outdated tradition.” Alas‚ what else would we expect from a generation hopelessly addicted to Chinese TikTok spyware and indoctrinated by left-wing activist teachers to think of the nuclear family as “patriarchal” and “repressive”? Millennials and Gen Z are the “participation trophy” generations: They are the ones who came of age receiving trophies and accolades not for being victorious or otherwise triumphant‚ but for simply showing up and playing. “Second place is just the first-place loser‚” NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt once said; “Everyone is always a winner‚” respond the cosseted brats of Gen Z and Gen Y (millennials). America has raised successive generations to believe demonstrably untrue things: Every person is of equal worth (not in the true sense that we are all God’s creations‚ but in the untrue sense that we are all of equal acumen‚ skills‚ and so forth); every culture and lifestyle is of equal dignity (including whether to marry and whether to raise children); and the only person who truly matters is “me” (and not one’s parents‚ grandparents‚ community members‚ countrymen‚ coreligionists‚ and so forth). In short‚ we have raised successive generations to reject the meritocratic‚ values-based‚ and sacrificial lifestyle of yesteryear for the uber-egalitarian‚ nihilistic‚ and solipsistic lifestyle flaunted by today’s elites. We have replaced the wisdom of traditional Judaism and Christianity with the moral relativism of the “Mystery Passage” from Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992): “At the heart of liberty is the right to define one’s own concept of existence‚ of meaning‚ of the universe‚ and of the mystery of human life.” We have replaced the duty and altruism of the Greatest Generation—those who stormed the beaches of Normandy and risked life and limb for God‚ family‚ and country—with Ayn Rand’s “Virtue of Selfishness.” No wonder‚ then‚ that marriage rates have been declining for so long. The very essence of the marital relationship—the fusing of two into one‚ the subordinating of the individual to the couple‚ learning to approach life’s challenges not as “me” but as “us”—is anathema to the “newer” ways of thinking. There is no “participation trophy” in marriage; there is teamwork‚ sacrifice for one’s spouse and children alike‚ and a mutual commitment to a specific (ideally religiously based) lifestyle. Are millennials and Gen Z actually better off today for rejecting the tried-and-true ways of the past? Our skyrocketing rates of drug overdose‚ depression‚ and deaths of despair would seem to provide a clear answer: No. As I said‚ although we will grow and learn‚ and although we will (hopefully) acquire more wisdom and material possessions alike‚ my wife and I at this earliest stage already have everything we truly need. We greatly look forward to what is to come in the many decades ahead. And in our own small way‚ we hope to demonstrate a more viable and meaningful lifestyle than that pushed by societal elites today. Please pray for us as we embark on our journey. The City of Los Angeles is taking steps to allow illegal immigrant police officers to be armed at all times. Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said his Department is leading the initiative to allow “non-citizen DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients who become sworn officers the ability to carry a firearm full-time‚” Fox News reports. The Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners unanimously approved the outline of a policy to allow DACA recipients the ability to carry firearms off the job. “Under state and federal law‚ illegal immigrants are prohibited from having firearms. However‚ DACA recipients are allowed to carry firearms in the course of their law enforcement duties‚” The Center Square noted. However‚ the LAPD looks to change that. The policy hasn’t been finalized and could take weeks or months to become official. Scientists have warned the spread of “zombie deer disease” is a “slow-moving disaster” and urged governments to prepare for the disease possibly spreading to humans. According to Daily Mail‚ the disease‚ which affects deer‚ elk‚ reindeer‚ sika deer and moose‚ has been reported in 32 states and parts of Canada. “Chronic wasting disease (CWD)‚ which leaves animals drooling‚ lethargic‚ stumbling and with a blank stare‚ has been found in 800 samples of deer‚ elk and moose across Wyoming‚” Independent noted. The CDC writes about CWD: Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a prion disease that affects deer‚ elk‚ reindeer‚ sika deer and moose. It has been found in some areas of North America‚ including Canada and the United States‚ Norway and South Korea. It may take over a year before an infected animal develops symptoms‚ which can include drastic weight loss (wasting)‚ stumbling‚ listlessness and other neurologic symptoms. CWD can affect animals of all ages and some infected animals may die without ever developing the disease. CWD is fatal to animals and there are no treatments or vaccines. To date‚ there have been no reported cases of CWD infection in people. However‚ some animal studies suggest CWD poses a risk to certain types of non-human primates‚ like monkeys‚ that eat meat from CWD-infected animals or come in contact with brain or body fluids from infected deer or elk. These studies raise concerns that there may also be a risk to people. Since 1997‚ the World Health Organization has recommended that it is important to keep the agents of all known prion diseases from entering the human food chain. The hefty $250 price tag probably scared away a lot of prospects; the hardcore Wholigans simply said‚ “Take my money!” Packed with Pete Townshend’s original Life House demos‚ the Record Plant NYC sessions‚ the Olympic Studios sessions‚ more singles and sessions‚ the full 1971 Young Vic live concert‚ the complete 1971 San Francisco Civic Auditorium show‚ and a Blu-ray Disc with the Steven Wilson Dolby Atmos and 5.1 mixes‚ your ears will thank you in the morning. Just don’t drop it because this sucker is so heavy it’ll go “thud”.  Before &; After Neil Young Struggling to keep up with Neil Young’s ever-growing discography? So are we. Fortunately‚ the 13-track Before &; After slows things down‚ providing a full-blown‚ acoustically based retrospective. From simplified runs of early material like “Burned” and “Mr. Soul‚” through sanctified classics like “Comes A Time‚” and latter-day nuggets like “I’m The Ocean” and “Mother Earth‚” there’s a little bit of everything from the Canadian singer-songwriter on this collection. For completists‚ it’s another notch in their belt that could one day‚ depending on your waistline‚ run out of notches.  Larks’ Tongues In Aspic The Complete Recording Sessions King Crimson Personnel musical chairs just about sent King Crimson packing in the early 70s until leader Robert Fripp finally had a lineup to complete what he called “a magic band.” Fifty years later‚ Larks’ Tongues in Aspic – The Complete Recording Sessions reaffirms Fripp’s claim to maximum effect. The guitarist is joined by then-newly-departed-from-Yes drummer Bill Bruford‚ plus bassist and vocalist John Wetton‚ violinist David Cross‚ and percussionist Jamie Muir for what many consider one of Crimson’s most epic offerings. Tapping into the sonic possibilities‚ Steven Wilson takes a crack at Dolby Atmos‚ DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround sound‚ and hi-res stereo mixes on one Blu-ray Disc‚ while David Singleton handles the “Elemental” mixes on a second Blu-ray‚ which also features the complete recordings of every session recorded for the album. Toss in two CDs with a 2023 stereo mix and instrumentals‚ elemental mixes‚ selected master reels‚ and a booklet with juicy tidbits — and you may never leave the comfy confines of your music room for the light of day again.  The Journey – Part 2 The Kinks The second installment of the Kinks’ 60th anniversary anthology series‚ The Journey – Part 2 picks up‚ in no particular order‚ from where The Journey – Part 1 left off. There’s a cross-section of hits‚ B-sides‚ deep tracks‚ alternate takes‚ and six new Ray Davies mixes including three previously unreleased live performances from 1975. There’s also a booklet with band photos and track notes by the Davies brothers (Ray and Dave) and drummer Mick Avory. Any Kinks fan will appreciate some of the funkier selections like “Scrapheap City‚” “Creeping Jean‚” “Wicked Annabella” and “Holiday Romance.” Who knows how many Kinks trinkets are hiding in the closet? We’ll leave that for Part 3‚ if one is forthcoming.  The Big Express XTC You’ve probably picked up on our obsession with Steven Wilson remixes. If so‚ XTC’s The Big Express delivers on that premise big time. The group’s 1984 album has been embellished with new stereo‚ Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround mixes on a Blu-ray Disc‚ as well as the stereo mix on CD. Of course‚ there’s a load of extras to cover the whole spectrum of the band’s seventh release. Squirming for recognition in a mire of 80s-infested pop swirl and new wave tendencies‚ XTC’s attempt at conceptual storytelling was substantiated by their free use of new technology alongside traditional manifestations that resulted into some spine-tingling ear candy.
