Dismembered Great White Shark Latest Victim Of Orca Attack‚ But This Time It Was In Australia

In October‚ the remains of a dismembered great white shark were discovered on an Australian beach. Scientists have now analyzed them and confirmed that orcas killed the predator‚ in what is the first confirmed attack of its kind in these waters. The body‚ what remained of it at least‚ washed up on a beach in Portland‚ Victoria. Residents found the head and spine of a great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias)‚ which led researchers and witnesses to suspect orcas had disemboweled it. “This is equal parts cool and terrifying”‚ Ben Johnstone‚ a local fisher and manager of the bait shop Portland Bait and Tackle wrote in a Facebook post after seeing the remains. “[T]his 3 meter white shark‚ washed up on the beach at Bridgewater‚ after being attacked by killer whales.”Soon after it was discovered‚ the body was collected and samples were sent to government agencies and academics for analysis. Like a scene from some aquatic version of CSI‚ the shark’s remains were “loaded” with its killer’s DNA. The necropsy has now shown that orcas (Orcinus orca) were indeed responsible. "[Upon] Inspection of the shark‚ there were really characteristic bite marks right in the pectoral girdle‚ so right between those fins under the belly‚ that are quite typical of killer whales where they effectively suck out the liver‚" Adam Miller‚ an associate professor in aquatic ecology and biodiversity at Deakin University‚ told ABC Radio Melbourne. To date‚ this behavior has been seen in South Africa‚ where pods of orcas have been terrorizing shark populations for several years. According to the analysis Miller led‚ the 4.9-meter (16-foot) shark found in Portland is the first confirmed evidence that orcas are hunting these animals in Australia too.Prior to this‚ orcas had been known to attack blue sharks (Prionace glauca) and shortfin mako sharks (Isurus oxyrinchus) in Australia‚ but experts had only suspected that the same slurpy fate had befallen some great whites. Apparently‚ there had already been some aggressive interactions between species off Kangaroo Island and the Neptune Islands in South Australia. But nothing had been confirmed.  Working in partnership with a First Nations group and government authorities‚ Miller and his colleagues swabbed the bite marks on the shark carcass. "We were able to confirm that those bite wounds were just loaded with killer whale DNA‚ so it's a bit of a smoking gun‚" he said.It is not currently clear which pod is responsible for the attack‚ and nor is the extent of these predations. However‚ South Africa’s experience suggests potentially worrying implications. “There has been an increase in predation on white sharks in South Africa‚” Miller added. “It’s led to quite a significant decline in the numbers and a displacement of white sharks individually due to shifts in their behavior.”This has had a cascading effect on the marine ecosystem and for conservation. “When you remove a top predator‚ this can have a measurable impact on the structure of marine ecosystems.”"From a conservation point of view it's significant‚ but we don't know how frequently it's happening so we'll keep an eye on things‚" Miller added.

Whales Indulge In Seaweed Face Masks For Playtime And Skin Treatment

Marine mammals are known for their high levels of intelligence‚ their social skills‚ and their association with Netflix documentaries. However‚ most people probably wouldn’t list skincare as one of a whale’s most famous activities – and that’s where they’d be wrong. While orcas and humpback whales have been filmed enjoying a spa day‚ now they’ve got a new skincare method involving kelp.Baleen whales including humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) have been observed “kelping” and swimming around with seaweed on their heads. Off the east coast of Australia‚ three direct observations of humpback whales rolling around and actively seeking kelp beds or seaweed have been recorded. This behavior has also been seen in grey whales (Eschrichtius robustus)‚ which are known to feed on both seaweed and seagrasses. By analyzing 100 social media posts regarding whale and seaweed interaction recorded by citizen scientists‚ whale-watching tours‚ and members of the public‚ the team found that the most frequently observed areas for the whales to have seaweed on themselves were between their front flipper and the front of their face‚ called the rostrum. This represented 56 percent of the social media interactions. Uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) were also used to observe whale and seaweed interactions‚ they filmed whales rolling with seaweed wrapped around different fins or on their rostrums.    So what are the whales up to? The researchers suggest that they are using the kelp as a kind of exfoliant helping to remove parasites such as the whale louse‚ dead skin‚ and bacteria from their bodies‚ there may also be an element of simply playing with the seaweed for sheer enjoyment.“There are two plausible theories: play and/or self-medication with seaweed. This behaviour may be playful but could also serve additional benefits in the context of learning and socialising‚ as well as ectoparasite removal and skin treatment by using brown algae’s antibacterial properties.” said Dr Olaf Meynecke‚ the paper's lead author‚ in a statement. With the increased use of UAVs in this context‚ the team expects to see more observations of this behavior. However‚ they also suggest that the consequences of kelp dieback could present some issues‚ and conservation efforts may need to include this in future plans. The paper is published in the Journal Of Marine Science And Engineering.

MSNBC Blithely Reports Biden Making Sign of the Cross At Mention of Boebert's Name

Wait! Aren't Republicans the ones who inappropriately drag religion into politics?  And surely no Democrat would ever perform a religious ritual as protection against the mention of a Republican's name? And yet . . .  On Thursday‚ Nicolle Wallace's MSNBC show‚ with Alicia Menendez as substitute host‚ rolled tape of Biden crossing himself after he mentioned the name of Lauren Boebert.  Menendez blithely said‚ without comment‚ that Biden "made the sign of the Cross at Boebert's name." Think MSNBC would be so nonchalant if a prominent Republican made the sign of the Cross at the mention of a Democrat's name?  Biden had ventured into Boebert's congressional district in Colorado to give a speech at a wind turbine plant. Biden reportedly: "sharply criticized Rep. Lauren Boebert in her Colorado congressional district on Wednesday afternoon‚ attacking the Republican directly for several minutes during his 23-minute long speech." According to the Good Catholic site: "It is appropriate to make the Sign of the Cross whenever we are feeling spiritually attacked. The devil hates this sign‚ so we wield a spiritual power when we use it."    The article also suggests making the sign of the Cross when one is afraid.  So which is it? Is President Biden afraid of Boebert? Does he perhaps actually see her as the Devil?  Or‚ as is likely‚ and would be even worse‚ was this just a cheap political stunt‚ using religion as a laugh line from the partisan Dem crowd? And again‚ how do you think the liberal media would react if a leading Republican Catholic made the sign of the Cross at the mention of‚ say‚ Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's name or -- heaven forbid -- that of Ilhan Omar or Rashida Tlaib? PS: It's a bit comical for HuffPost to report this as "Joe Biden Scorches Lauren Boebert With Hand Gesture‚" which implies something less Catholic.  Biden: Boebert called this law a massive failure. Did you all know you’re part of a massive failure? Tell that to the Coloradans that get new jobs in Pueblo at CS Wind pic.twitter.com/DtVVHlwmzn — Acyn (@Acyn) November 29‚ 2023
