Speaker Johnson Fires Back At Hunter Biden Over Public Testimony Offer

Speaker Johnson Fires Back At Hunter Biden Over Public Testimony Offer

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) dismissed Hunter Biden‘s offer to publicly testify as part of the corruption-focused impeachment inquiry into his father‚ President Joe Biden‚ instead of complying with a subpoena for a deposition. “It’s the precedent‚” Johnson said during an interview with Fox News on Saturday‚ adding later‚ “Every investigation of Congress in the modern era‚ the deposition has come first‚ and the public testimony follows. Why would we break that precedent now?” Johnson was joined on “Fox &; Friends Weekend” by House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY). They both took part in the defense effort when former President Donald Trump faced impeachment. Stefanik said the offer by Hunter Biden and his legal team was “unacceptable” and insisted that “the only correct response to a subpoena is a deposition.” Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY)‚ who is leading the impeachment inquiry and issued the subpoena‚ has already rejected the terms offered by Hunter Biden’s lawyer. CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP The attorney‚ Abbe Lowell‚ argued that a “public proceeding would prevent selective leaks‚ manipulated transcripts‚ doctored exhibits‚ or one-sided press statements.” Comer indicated that lawmakers would be willing to have Hunter Biden testify in an open hearing at a “future date” — but insisted that the first son must also testify in the closed-door deposition scheduled for mid-December. In an interview with Newsmax‚ Comer said Johnson “has our back” and House Republicans would “take steps” to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress if he does not comply with the subpoena. The top Democrat on the oversight panel‚ Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD)‚ issued a statement condemning his Republican counterparts for rejecting the open hearing offer. “What an epic humiliation for our colleagues and what a frank confession that they are simply not interested in the facts and have no confidence in their own case or the ability of their own members to pursue it‚” Raskin said. “After the miserable failure of their impeachment hearing in September‚ Chairman Comer has now apparently decided to avoid all Committee hearings where the public can actually see for itself the logical‚ rhetorical and factual contortions they have tied themselves up in‚” he added. Stefanik made the case for why an open hearing can be counterproductive to a serious inquiry. “An open hearing is five minutes on the Democrat side‚ five minutes on the Republican side. It becomes a very public press opportunity for the Democrat to politicize‚” Stefanik said. “We want to go about this from a legal and factual perspective and the only way to go about that is through a deposition.”

Multiple Dead‚ Dozens Injured After Church Bombed In Asia In Suspected ISIS Attack

Multiple people were killed and dozens more were injured on Sunday following a church bombing in Marwari in the southern Philippines. The National reported that at least four were killed and 50 more injured during the suspected ISIS terrorist attack that targeted the Catholic church during mass. “I condemn in the strongest possible terms the senseless and most heinous acts perpetrated by foreign terrorists upon the Mindanao State University (MSU) and Marawi communities early this Sunday morning‚” said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. “Extremists who wield violence against the innocent will always be regarded as enemies to our society.” The blast happened in the school’s gymnasium just as the congregation began reading the Bible. Military chief of staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said that there were “strong indications of a foreign element” to the terrorist attack and that all evidence “points to the Maute-ISIS.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP The area is part of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao‚ which was given self-rule under former President Rodrigo Duterte in an effort to stave off growing Islamic terrorism. The military killed 11 suspected pro-ISIS fighters on Friday after civilians provided information to the government on the terrorists’ whereabouts. Brig. Gen. Oriel Pangcog‚ commander of the Philippine Army’s 601st Infantry Brigade‚ said: “Eleven members of the local terrorist group‚ including the proclaimed Ameer of Dawlah Islamiyah-Philippines‚ were killed in decisive military operations in the mountainous area of Mother Tuayan‚ Datu Hoffer Ampatuan‚ Maguindanao del Sur‚ at 12:15 p.m. on Friday. The operation also led to the recovery of ten high-powered firearms and three explosives.”

Obama Def Sec Favors ‘More Aggressive’ Response To Attacks On U.S. Forces By Iranian Proxies

Obama Def Sec Favors ‘More Aggressive’ Response To Attacks On U.S. Forces By Iranian Proxies

Leon Panetta‚ who served as CIA director and defense secretary during the Obama administration‚ voiced support for a “more aggressive” response to attacks on U.S. forces in the Middle East. He made the comments during a panel discussion on Saturday at the Reagan National Defense Forum along with former National Security Advisors Stephen Hadley and Robert O’Brien. The moderator‚ Fox News anchor Bill Hemmer‚ broached the topic of contending with Tehran after Iranian proxies attacked U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria dozens of times over the past several weeks. “I would basically determine where those missiles are coming from — and we have the capability to do that … and then attack those positions immediately in order to make sure that they don’t do it again‚” Panetta said. “I would be much more aggressive about going after those that attack our U.S. forces‚” he added before contending that Iran would rather lean on terrorist groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas rather than enter a war. U.S. military retaliatory strikes on weapons facilities and other targets in response to the attacks‚ which have ramped up as Israel wages war against Hamas‚ have been “a little bit too selective.” Panetta said. “I want to go after those who are firing missiles at our troops and make sure they understand that when they fire a missile — they are going to die‚” he added. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin delivered remarks at the same event in California in which he discussed strengthening the position of U.S. forces in the Middle East to assist Israel and shore up deterrence in the region. “As we are working to stabilize the region‚ Iran is raising tensions‚” Austin said. “And after attacks against U.S. personnel in Iraq and Syria‚ our forces repeatedly struck facilities in Iraq and eastern Syria used by Iran’s [Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps] and by militias affiliated with Iran.” He continued‚ “We will not tolerate attacks on American personnel. And so these attacks must stop. And until they do‚ we will do what we need to do to protect our troops — and to impose costs on those who attack them.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP There has been some pressure from Republicans in Congress on the Biden administration to respond more forcefully to the attacks by Iranian-backed groups. “We’ve only hit back a few times. When we do hit back‚ it’s almost always at empty proxy warehouses or maybe proxy forces in Iraq and Syria‚” Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) said in a “Fox News Sunday” interview last week. “It seems like the president wants to go out of his way to avoid Iranian casualties. I would target Iranians who are operating in Iraq and in Syria. I would also send a clear message to Iran if these attacks don’t stop immediately‚ then we’ll begin to threaten their assets.” He also said: “The way to stop these attacks is not be fearful and hesitant and cautious in a response‚ but massive retaliation to make it clear we will not tolerate these attacks on Americans.”
