In 1986‚ a gigantic iceberg separated from the Fichner-Ronne ice shelf in West Antarctica. It was so big that it became grounded‚ stuck to the seafloor‚ and remained in position for 40 years. Finally‚ it has now been pushed off the seafloor and has begun drifting in the Weddell Sea to a region in the South Atlantic called Iceberg Alley. Designated A23a‚ this monster berg measures 4000 sq km (1‚500 square miles) and is about 400 meters (1‚300 feet) thick – the world’s largest. On the surface‚ A23a is about four times the size of New York City. But as is well known about icebergs‚ you must look below the surface‚ too. At 400 meters thick‚ the entire body of ice adds up to more than a trillion tons of frozen water. ESA’s Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellite has been keeping an eye on the moving behemoth‚ which appears to be driven by winds and currents. Scientists estimate it is currently moving at a rate of about 4.8 km (3 miles) each day. ESA said it is not unusual for icebergs to become grounded‚ but over time they shrink enough to unground and float. Credit: ESA Now that this iceberg is on the loose‚ scientists can’t predict exactly where it will go next. However‚ like most icebergs from the Weddell sector‚ A23a is likely to end up in the South Atlantic on Iceberg Alley. While A23a is huge‚ it’s not the biggest ever. It is only about one-third the size of the biggest iceberg in recorded history‚ B-15 which calved off of Antarctica’s Ross Ice Shelf in 2000. The B-15 iceberg covered more than 10‚878 square km (4‚200 square miles) when it broke away‚ according to NASA’s Earth Observatory. B-15 has since fractured into numerous smaller bergs‚ and most have melted away. Another biggie was A-76 which came loose in 2021 and measured around 4‚320 square km (1‚670 square miles) in size. At 170 km (106 miles) in length and 25 km (15 miles) wide‚ the iceberg was slightly larger than the Spanish island of Majorca‚ and bigger than the state of Rhode Island in the US. A team of researchers led by University of Chicago astronomer Rafael Luque analyzed data acquired by both NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and ESA’s CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite (Cheops) and found a unique planetary system. Orbiting a star cataloged as HD110067‚ this system contains six sub-Neptune planets. Incredibly‚ all six planets are orbiting in direct resonance with each other. The results of the work were published on November 29 in Nature. In 2020‚ transit data collected by TESS‚ which tracks the change in the star’s brightness‚ revealed at least two planets. Their orbits were about nine days for the closer and fourteen days for the farther world. Additionally‚ the transits provided hints of several more planets. Then follow-up data from Cheops identified a third planet orbiting in twenty days.  From these orbital periods‚ Luque realized that these three planets orbited in a 3/2 resonance with each other. Planet b‚ the innermost‚ orbits three times in the same amount of time that planet c‚ the next one out‚ orbits twice. Planet c orbits three times while planet d orbits twice. Next came a lot of math. Credit: ESA Working through the calculations to find potential resonances‚ the team matched one set of transits to a planet orbiting in 31 days. Again‚ the orbit was a 3/2 resonance‚ with planet d orbiting three times to planet e’s two times. However‚ there were possibly two more unmatched transits in the data. TESS had only observed each one a single time‚ making confirmation difficult. One planet orbited in 41 days; the other in 55. Adding to the difficulty‚ the TESS data that could have confirmed the outer two planets contained excessive light from the Earth and Moon. Enter scientists Joseph Twicken (SETI Institute‚ NASA Ames Research Center) and David Rapetti (NASA Ames and USRA)‚ who were working on code to recover lost data due to scattered light. Rapetti applied the code to the TESS data and found the two transits as predicted. While multi-planet systems turned out to be common‚ this system’s resonant orbits are special. Luque notes‚ “We think only about one percent of all systems stay in resonance‚ and even fewer show a chain of planets in such configuration.” Staying in resonance with six planets means this system may answer questions about planetary formation. Luque explains‚ “It shows us the pristine configuration of a planetary system that has survived untouched.” In addition to hosting an “untouched” planetary system‚ HD110067 is the brightest known star to host at least four planets. With short‚ close-in orbits‚ the atmospheres of these sub-Neptunes are likely to be puffed up. And that makes them all excellent targets for future observations using the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope. These types of worlds are expected to host hydrogen-based atmospheres‚ and few examples have been confirmed to date. Luque concludes‚ “This discovery is going to become a benchmark system to study how sub-Neptunes‚ the most common type of planets outside of the solar system‚ form‚ evolve‚ what are they made of‚ and if they possess the right conditions to support the existence of liquid water in their surfaces.” This system provides scientists with a wealth of potential discoveries‚ from answering questions about planetary formation and system evolution to characterizing the atmospheric composition of sub-Neptunes. And potentially give us several more places to look for life beyond Earth. “Far-right” talk is an excuse for not thinking hard about what led up to this and how public authorities lost control of Dublin’s city centre. The attempt to scapegoat the “Far-Right” for the breakdown in public order that we saw on Thursday conveniently ignores the fact that successive Irish governments have allowed criminals to wander the streets of Dublin with relative ease. You might think that a government faced with a barbaric public stabbing of schoolchildren and an unprecedented night of rioting in its capital city would extend condolences to the victims‚ take a deep breath‚ and try to figure out how a city managed to spiral out of control on its watch. But instead‚ Thursday’s riots in Dublin were met by a shallow‚ one-dimensional analysis by all of the key authorities involved: to blame the “far right.” For example‚ Garda Commissioner Drew Harris blamed the violence on the streets on a “hooligan faction driven by far right ideology.” Taoiseach Leo Varadkar pledged at a news conference to “modernise our laws against incitement to hatred and hatred in general.” And Minister for Justice Helen McEntee said that a “thuggish and manipulative element” was using the earlier incident to “wreak havoc.” The Irish government would have us believe that the most destructive riot in Dublin in living memory was not a symptom of failed governance‚ but the result of an ideological fringe group going on a looting spree. That is a suspiciously convenient narrative for the powers that be‚ for it absolves them of all responsibility for losing control of the city. By fingering a Far-Right fringe‚ public officials can wash their hands of any role they themselves may have played in bringing the city to the brink of anarchy. But blaming these riots on the “far-right” only serves as an excuse for not engaging in serious reflection about the deeper causes of this incendiary atmosphere‚ and the ensuing events. These events did not come out of nowhere and cannot be simplistically reduced to the work of a fringe “far-right” mob. “Far-right” talk is an excuse for not thinking hard about what led up to this and how public authorities lost control of Dublin’s city centre. Irish Hate Laws to Enforce Cultural Suicide Nonetheless‚ to suggest that Thursday’s chaotic scenes can be blamed exclusively on the “Far-Right” would be profoundly disingenuous. To begin with‚ many of the “hooligans” that joined the riots seemed at least as interested in looting shops and finding an excuse to set something on fire as in joining a political movement. Secondly‚ even if there were important xenophobic elements among the rioters‚ this does not explain how a city can be so fragile as to succumb to chaos and looting in a few hours. The attempt to scapegoat the “Far-Right” for the breakdown in public order that we saw on Thursday conveniently ignores the fact that successive Irish governments have allowed criminals to wander the streets of Dublin with relative ease. Budding criminals know they will face lenient sentences‚ partly because there is simply no room in Irish jails to hold them for long‚ leading to a “revolving door” scenario in our prisons‚ as pointed out five months ago by the Irish Prison Services. People feel less safe in Dublin city than ever before‚ and there is a widespread belief that criminals in Dublin can act with impunity‚ or else will not suffer a prison sentence proportionate to their crimes. The government most certainly must answer for failing to address this problem over the years. This failure most certainly cannot be blamed on “far-right” ideology. Thirdly‚ while there is no excuse for attacking police officers or setting vehicles alight‚ the Irish government has undoubtedly paved the way for these riots by refusing to listen to its citizens for years. Ireland’s political establishment has consistently been dismissive toward reasonable concerns about its immigration and refugee policies‚ reducing them to the rantings of a “Far-Right” fringe. This has created an atmosphere of pent-up resentment and frustration‚ and it was only a matter of time before this frustration erupted onto the streets. Many aspects of Ireland’s immigration policies strike people as profoundly unfair and destructive‚ including allowing very large numbers of asylum-seekers to avail of free or cheap housing on the taxpayer’s dime while Irish citizens are frozen out of the housing market; and flooding local communities with large numbers of refugees with no prior consultation whatsoever. In response to complaints‚ the Irish government has just doubled down‚ and given us more of the same “open-door” immigration policies. So when a city is taken over by thugs for a night‚ we should be less worried about whether there were “far-right” elements among them‚ and more worried about why they felt they could openly engage in this level of brazen violence and destruction and get away with it; and how the atmosphere in Dublin become so tense and angry that a single stabbing incident‚ however unspeakable‚ could spark riots on a level we have not seen in generations.
