Farmers' protests against the EU's and the Dutch government's emission requirements continue unabated.
In several places in the country, farmers use their tractors to block the roads for freight traffic but let cars pass. In long convoys, they try to paralyze the country's economy in an attempt to influence politicians. The protests were triggered by a government proposal to reduce emissions of pollutants such as nitrous oxide and ammonia by 50% by 2030.
The Dutch government has still not met the farmers and many are worried that it will lead to violent clashes. The government believes that nitrogen emissions must be reduced to comply with EU guidelines.
Minister of Nature and Nitrogen Christianne van der Wal has admitted that the reform in practice will mean the end for a large number of farms, writes Yle . She has plans to achieve the emission targets through the forced purchase of farms. The police have hit an iron ring around the minister's home to prevent protesters from getting there.

Police opened fire
On Wednesday, the police shot at a 16-year-old tractor-borne protester up close, at a police roadblock in Rotterdam, something that Samnytt reported on. The incident was captured on film. Two shots are heard fired in quick succession. The shots went through the cab and it was close that the boy was hit in the head.
The 16-year-old, Jouke Hospes, was later arrested along with two men in their 40s. The police accused the three of attempted murder and claimed that they had "tried to drive on police and police vehicles". The charges were later dropped and all three were released on Wednesday, Dutchnews reports .
Before that, activists calling themselves the "Farmers Defense Force" (Farmers' Defense Force) had driven a convoy of tractors to the police station in Leeuwarden where they demanded that the boy be released. Hospes says in retrospect that it is "inconceivable" that the police shot at him.

Sick leave after shooting at the boy
The policeman who shot at the 16-year-old is now said to be on sick leave. Local media reported on Thursday night that he had hidden due to threats. Neither the Public Prosecutor's Office nor the police want to confirm whether this is the case.
Early on Thursday morning, the police arrested 19 people who with their tractors blocked a distribution center for three days in Bleiswijk. Nine of them were under 18 years of age. Dozens of riot police tore them out of their vehicles and then took them away. All were released later in the day. The ten adults are fined for not following the police's order to leave. The nine minors will be questioned at a later time, writes AD .
On Saturday, the mayor of Nijmegen had ordered that no peasants be allowed to enter the city. Farmers saw this as a challenge and soon filled the streets with honking tractors.
In one field, 350 tractors gathered in formation, which seen from the sky spelled the message "No farmers, no food" (without farmers, no food).

UN alert on "human shields" in Ukraine

FOREIGN. A new report from the UN raises alarms that civilians are being used as "human shields" in the war in Ukraine, reports GP.


About 50 elderly and disabled people died when Russia attacked the nursing home in Stara Krasnianka in eastern Luhansk in March.

The attack was condemned by the outside world and was described as an unjustified atrocity. But in a new report, the UN places much of the blame on Ukraine.

The report states that Ukrainian forces had stationed themselves at the nursing home several days before the attack, which made the building a target for the Russians.

The residents and staff were also not allowed to evacuate but were allowed to remain in the nursing home during the fighting of the following days, without electricity or water.

The UN report is cautious in its wording but expresses concern that "human shields" could be used in the Ukraine war.
