In December 2024, Chen Jinping, a 60-year-old Manhattan resident, pleaded guilty to opening and operating a secret Chinese police station for China’s Ministry of Public Security in Manhattan’s Chinatown neighborhood. Chen was arrested with “Harry” Lu Jianwang in April 2023, following an FBI investigation into the outpost. Though these arrests were the first of their kind, according to Justice Department officials, American authorities suspect that China has these kinds of outposts all over the country.  And China’s nefarious activities in New York City hardly scratch the surface. For decades, Chinese operatives have infiltrated American universities and companies, smuggled drugs and human beings across America’s borders, and stolen American intellectual property and technology—even corn seeds from fields in Iowa.  President Donald Trump was one of the first to see the threat of China clearly. Under the president’s leadership, Republicans in Congress are trying to prevent and punish this malign Chinese activity. This week, one of the House Republicans spearheading that effort, Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, joins “The Signal Sitdown” to discuss. “My passion for this policy started in my district,” Hinson said. They want to cheat,” Hinson explained. “It’s all about reverse engineering because there is so much R&D that has gone into seed technology so that we can grow the most resilient, best yielding plants in the world.” China’s unfair trade practices can often be more subtle than outright theft, however. “[The Chinese] are using tactics like transnational shipment,” Hinson told The Daily Signal. “So, especially in the auto-parts industry, for example,” Hinson explained, “something coming in from China is gonna be tariffed, so then they ship it through Singapore or Vietnam or someplace with a lesser tariff to get around our tariff laws.” “They’re economically cheating and getting a better deal,” Hinson continued. “Meanwhile, you’ve got American producers trying to play on that same playing field and it’s not level.” Hinson has introduced the Protecting American Industry and Labor from International Trade Crimes Act with Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party Chairman John Moolenaar, R-Mich., and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., to provide federal law enforcement more capacity to crack down on these trade practices. “What we’re trying to do is make sure that President Trump’s Department of Justice… [will have] the resources and a specific task force to be able to go after these malign actors who are, again, intentionally cheating,” she explained. “We think this cost is hundreds of billions of dollars every year on the low end,” Hinson said. “This has been decades in the making, right? Capitol Police arrested a man outside The Heritage Foundation after he allegedly sprayed two security personnel with pepper spray. The incident occurred Wednesday morning outside the conservative policy organization, located on a busy thoroughfare just blocks from the U.S. Capitol. “Heritage believes in the First Amendment and respects American citizens’ right to disagree and to protest peacefully,” said Eric Korsvall, chief operating officer at The Heritage Foundation. “However, physical threats, attacks, and violence cross the line. Full stop.” “The assault on two of our security guards this morning by a far-left agitator protesting at Heritage since Sunday is unacceptable and not tolerated. The safety of our staff, guests, and security team is non-negotiable,” Korsvall added. Capitol Police identified the suspect as Nathaniel Craig Wetter Taylor of Champaign, Illinois, according to The Heritage Foundation. He was charged with two counts of assault on a police officer. Heritage security officers are special police officers in the District of Columbia. Capitol Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The suspect is expected to appear before a judge Thursday morning. The office of Jeanine Pirro, interim U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C., will make the decision on whether to prosecute. That office did not immediately respond to request for comment. “Ironically, the very protesters spewing hate at Heritage are often the same ones proudly displaying the virtual signaling ‘Hate has no home here’ signs,” Korsvall said. “Fortunately, the only ‘home’ the assailant will see tonight is a jail cell as he awaits a hearing. We call on the U.S. Attorney to prosecute this assailant for his unlawful behavior.” The man was wearing a red hat, similar in appearance to a “Make America Great Again” hat. But the hat said “Not Great.” Security video of the incident shows him trying to enter the front door of The Heritage Foundation, rather than standing on the public sidewalk near the front entrance. When security attempted to move him to the sidewalk, he shot them in the eyes with pepper spray. The incident comes at a time of increased violence, including the Los Angeles riots, aimed at the right. Christian Lasval, social media manager for The Heritage Foundation, saw the incident as he was coming into work and called 911. “It was surprising to me that he decided to attack our officers with pepper spray. I have not seen that before,” Lasval told The Daily Signal. “Typically, if protesters are making some kind of commotion, when we ask them to get off the property or get on the sidewalk, it’s not a problem.” “This was the first time I’ve ever seen somebody be that adamant about resisting getting on public property, and attacking our officers with pepper spray.” Footage posted on Bluesky appears to show Wetter protesting at a side entrance to The Heritage Foundation Monday, with other protesters. In the video, protesters shout at Heritage security staff, calling them “Nazis” and swearing at them. On both Sunday and Monday, raucous protesters were outside The Heritage Foundation. Heritage Foundation studio fellow Josef von Spakovsky was a witness and made a statement to police. “I went downstairs to see if they needed assistance. One of the week’s most inaccurate and biased statements was “there is no vicious and violent mob in Los Angeles.” This claim did not come from some fringe angry online social media user, but was pushed by MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell on Tuesday night’s broadcast of The Last Word. Clearly, this take was not only just extremely out of touch with reality, but a bald-faced lie.  But far be it from those at MSNBC to care about factual reporting. Their agenda was to push anti-conservative rhetoric and excuse the massive illegal immigration problem. Many of O’Donnell’s claims were certifiably false at best, and intentional inflammatory rhetoric at worst.      O’Donnell began his LA tirade by attempting to garner sympathy for illegal immigrants who worked on construction sites:  Those immigrants outside the Home Depots in Los Angeles are there to help. They are there to work. They are there hoping that someone doing a home project of some kind will need their help and hire them, and people do that every day in the parking lot of Home Depots in Los Angeles. Every day. People have decided from experience that they can trust those men, those workers, some of whom show up at the Home Depot every day and are known by sight to all of us going in and out of those Home Depots in Los Angeles, they're there to try to support their families by making life easier for us. But that wasn’t even O’Donnell’s most absurd take of the segment.  “Donald Trump wants to torture them.” He stated confidently, almost proud of himself for coming up with the line. O’Donnell believes that Donald Trump wants to torture illegal immigrants. He provided no examples or proof to back up his claim, but did have the audacity to say that Trump supporters are “fact free.” But the icing on O’Donnell’s cake of lies was yet to come. The host continued to tell viewers that President Trump lied about Los Angeles, saying that “there is no vicious and violent mob in Los Angeles.” The entire country’s attention is fixated on the violence that has ravaged through LA over the past several days, and to state confidently that there is “no violent mob in Los Angeles” is an embarrassing take from O’Donnell and MSNBC. He also told his viewers that there were no riots on Tuesday, which completely contradicts what was said by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass in a press conference on Tuesday night, where the violence had gotten so difficult to control, that Bass had to implement a curfew that very night.  O’Donnell continued his rant, saying that California belonged to Mexico before the United States had “waged war” to secure it, so “when you take land by force in war, as this country did, to add California to our country, don't be surprised if from time to time you see the flag of the country that was there before you on that very same land, that was Mexican land until we took it away.” What O’Donnell left out of his spun historical account was that the population of the entire territory ceded to the U.S. was only about 80,000 people. He also omitted that the U.S. gained California as a state during the Mexican-American War, which was fought largely because Mexico refused to recognize the independence of Texas, which also was previously a Mexican territory. Texas had sought independence from Mexico because the Mexican government had imposed unfair taxes and assimilation laws on Texans, and Mexican troops fired on American troops in disputed territory after Texas became a state. He also left out that parts of California used to be part of Russia, but O’Donnell would probably have a different reaction if he saw people rioting while waving Russian flags. “American” has never been a race, but a unique philosophy that goes far beyond race and ethnicity, based on the principles of unalienable rights. O’Donnell has failed to understand this, and has implied that whatever your ethnicity is, that is the heritage you should uphold over your identity as an American– which is inherently antithetical to the reason why so many immigrated here in the first place: the American Dream. O’DONNELL: There is no vicious and violent mob in Los Angeles. The National Guard troops are doing absolutely nothing. The Marines are invisible and obviously doing absolutely nothing. And peaceful protesters have been peacefully submitting to arrests in small numbers to make their point of protest against what Donald Trump is trying to do in their city. Donald Trump repeatedly today referred to, “rioters bearing foreign flags.” There were no rioters today, none. But there were Mexican flags in a place that was Mexico long before it became part of the United States, as a result of a war the United States chose to wage on Mexico in order to obtain that territory.  Mexico, and Spain before it, have forced Donald Trump to speak Spanish very much against his will. But he's, of course too stupid to even realize that he's doing that when he names the city where he has sent his troops to do nothing. Spain was the first colonizer of the place we now call California. Spain established the missions in California, named after saints in Spanish, that every California public school student learns about in elementary school. And Donald Trump knows nothing about. He doesn't know that Los Angeles means the angels. He doesn't know that Spanish was the only non-tribal language spoken in Los Angeles long before New York even existed, long before New York was first settled by the Dutch. And so, yes, when you take land by force in war, as this country did, to add California to our country, don't be surprised if from time to time you see the flag of the country that was there before you on that very same land, that was Mexican land until we took it away.  (...)
