With 2023 Elections in Rearview Mirror‚ These 6 Voter Fraud Cases Aren’t Yet Settled

It’s been an off-year for elections‚ but voter fraud scandals were on in 2023‚ affecting local races in New England‚ Iowa‚ New Jersey‚ and Texas.  At least three of these scandals—in New England states—affected races that were on the ballot this year. Others involved formal charges brought for alleged fraud in past elections.  In the past week alone‚ one election was overturned in Texas‚ a federal voter fraud trial began in Iowa‚ and politicians in Connecticut grappled over when to have a do-over election after a judge tossed the results.  On top of that‚ multiple alleged cases of election fraud were caught on video.  As explained in my 2022 book “The Myth of Voter Suppression‚” voter fraud is a demonstrably real problem proven by numerous convictions and overturned elections. The most common form of fraud is through absentee voting and ballot harvesting.  Here’s a look at six election fraud cases being prosecuted or investigated in the aftermath of the 2023 elections.  1. Caught on Camera in Connecticut Drop Box A week before the general election in Bridgeport‚ Connecticut‚ the state’s largest city‚ state Judge William Clark tossed out the results of Democrats’ September primary pitting incumbent Mayor Joe Ganim against challenger John Gomes.  Gomes was ahead on election night in the primary‚ but after absentee ballots came in the next day‚ Ganim was declared the winner.  The judge called the evidence of fraud “shocking.” That evidence was on video‚ which shows the vice chair of the Bridgeport Democratic Committee apparently stuffing ballots into a drop box outside Bridgeport City Hall.  The judge didn’t have the authority to postpone the general election‚ which went forward Tuesday. Although Ganim defeated Gomes in the general election‚ it appears unlikely to count. The court gave the candidates until Wednesday to agree on a primary date‚ or the court would set one.  Gomes reportedly wants a Dec. 19 primary‚ while Ganim and the city want to hold it Jan. 19.  Ganim is known as one of the state’s biggest comeback stories.  The Bridgeport mayor’s political career seemed to have come to an end in 2003 after he was convicted on racketeering‚ extortion‚ and other public corruption charges and sentenced to nine years in prison. But Ganim was elected again as mayor in 2015 and has been reelected in each subsequent election.   2. Alleged Vote Buying in Springfield‚ Massachusetts Just days before the general election in Springfield‚ Massachusetts‚ city election officials accused mayoral candidate  Justin Hurst of buying votes during in-person early voting.  Hurst‚ a member of the Springfield City Council‚ was challenging incumbent Mayor Domenic J. Sarno. Both are Democrats. Video footage caught people being dropped off in black SUVs and entering City Hall to vote. After they come out with “I Voted” stickers‚ a man “takes out what appears to be a large bundle of cash” and hands bills to each individual‚ according to an affidavit from Springfield Elections Commissioner Gladys Oyola-Lopez‚ as reported by Western Mass News and other news outlets.  Hurst denied the allegations and said he was the target of a “smear campaign.” If the allegations were true‚ it was a bad investment. Surno won a sixth term as mayor on election night.  3. Stealing Ballots?  Massachusetts received disproportionate attention this year on the voter fraud front. Like the aforementioned two cases‚ election fraud alleged in Lawrence‚ Massachusetts‚ also was caught on video.   NBC 10 Boston first reported Wednesday on video footage that seems to show a woman removing a ballot from a mailbox. Another woman made a similar complaint to police‚ the news outlet reported‚ and officials said there may be others. Some voters in Lawrence said they showed up to vote in person and were told they had already sent in a mail-in ballot. The Essex County District Attorney’s Office and Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin are investigating the allegations.  “We’re going to get all the ballots out of Lawrence‚ we’re going to get all the mail-in ballots‚ and we’re going to review everything and all the provisionals and reconcile the list‚” Galvin told the news station. “And if further investigation contacting some of the people who allegedly voted by mail needs to be done‚ we will do it.”   4. That 2020 Election On Wednesday‚ the federal voter fraud trial of Kim Phuong Taylor began in Iowa‚ the Sioux City Journal reported.  Kim Taylor is the wife of Woodbury County Supervisor Jeremy Taylor‚ who unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2020 Republican primary for Iowa’s 4th Congressional District. Her husband was named as an unindicted coconspirator.  Federal prosecutors allege that Kim Taylor engaged in a fraudulent scheme in both her husband’s failed House race and his successful reelection for the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors.  Taylor allegedly submitted or caused others to submit dozens of voter registrations‚ absentee ballot request forms‚ and absentee ballots containing false information‚ according to the Justice Department.  These documents required the signer to affirm that he or she was the person named in them‚ but prosecutors allege Taylor signed the documents for voters without their permission and told others that they could sign on behalf of relatives who weren’t present. Federal prosecutors indicted Kim Taylor on 26 counts of providing false information in registering and voting‚ three counts of fraudulent registration‚ and 23 counts of fraudulent voting. She faces up to five years for each count.  5. Overturning Election in Texas On Tuesday‚ just a little over a year after the 2022 election for the Laredo City Council‚ a Texas state appeals court made what might be the final ruling in an alleged scam involving city police officers.  The appeals court ruled that Ricardo Rangel Jr. was the rightful winner of the District 2 council seat over Daisy Campos Rodriguez‚ who won the 2022 race by six votes‚ the Laredo Morning Times reported.   A lower court ruled in February that 11 votes were cast illegally in favor of Campos Rodriguez the previous November. Officers with the Laredo Police Department reportedly cast some illegal votes. Three of them were suspended and another retired. 6. That Other 2020 Election‚ Jersey-Style  In late October‚ the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office charged Paterson Council Speaker Alex Mendez with stealing mail-in ballots.  State prosecutors also alleged that Mendez‚ his wife‚ and two campaign supporters attempted to rig the 2020 election‚ NBC 4 New York reported. Investigators said hundreds of ballots were stolen‚ falsified‚ or improperly delivered.  New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin‚ a Democrat‚ said the Mendez campaign attempted “to rig an election in their favor and to deprive the voters of Paterson of having their voices heard.”  Paterson is the third-largest city in New Jersey.  Have an opinion about this article? Good Guys (and Gals) With Guns Still Out There‚ as These 12 Examples Show

The tragic mass shooting last month in Lewiston‚ Maine‚ sent gun control activists into their typical attacks on the right to keep and bear arms. Many defaulted to their standard narrative that the real “bad guy” wasn’t the murderer‚ but the Second Amendment and its supporters. Instead of demanding accountability from the government officials who failed to enforce existing criminal and mental health laws‚ they immediately demanded additional gun control measures that punish ordinary‚ peaceable Americans. Even worse‚ some derided millions of law-abiding gun owners by asserting that the murderer was just another “good guy with a gun” up until the moment he started killing innocent people. Others mocked gun owners by asking where all the “good guys with guns” were to stop the slaughter. Comments like these‚ of course‚ ignore reality. As is the case in so many mass public shootings‚ the Lewiston gunman was anything but a “good guy‚” and he targeted victims in places where he was least likely to be met with armed resistance. Meanwhile‚ the fact that the Lewiston shooter wasn’t stopped by an armed civilian doesn’t negate the many other instances last month in which Americans successfully used their firearms to defend themselves‚ their loved ones‚ and even complete strangers from criminal violence. Such defensive gun uses are far from uncommon. Almost every major study has found that Americans use their firearms in self-defense between 500‚000 and 3 million times annually‚ as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has acknowledged. In 2021‚ the most comprehensive study ever conducted on the issue concluded that roughly 1.6 million defensive gun uses occur in the United States every year. For this reason‚ The Daily Signal publishes a monthly article highlighting some of the previous month’s many news stories on defensive gun use that you may have missed—or that might not have made it to the national spotlight in the first place. (Read other accounts here from past months and years. You also may follow @DailyDGU on Twitter for daily highlights of defensive gun uses.) The 12 examples below represent only a small portion of the news stories on defensive gun use that we found in October. You may explore more using The Heritage Foundation’s interactive Defensive Gun Use Database. (The Daily Signal is Heritage’s news organization.) Oct. 3‚ Chicago: In the aftermath of a multi-vehicle crash involving a city bus‚ police said‚ a gunman opened fire in the direction of bystanders‚ striking and wounding a Chicago Transit Authority bus supervisor. A tow truck driver with a concealed carry permit returned fire at the gunman‚ who fled. Oct. 5‚ Phoenix: Police said an armed resident fatally shot a man who broke into a residence through a window while the family‚ including two young daughters‚ was home.  Oct. 6‚ Bismark‚ North Dakota: A couple woke up when a highly intoxicated and naked intruder broke into their home‚ police said. The man claimed he was there to “retrieve his clothing.” The husband held the intruder—a complete stranger—at gunpoint until police arrived. Oct. 11‚ Shreveport‚ Louisiana: After a woman’s ex-boyfriend broke into her home while armed with a knife and a bat‚ police said‚ a man inside shot him. The intruder‚ whose wounds weren’t life-threatening‚ was taken into police custody. Oct. 13‚ Virginia Beach‚ Virginia: Police said a contractor for a flooring company was justified in shooting and wounding a man who‚ during a dispute over construction noise‚ brandished a gun and physically assaulted the contractor’s co-worker. Oct. 15‚ Hollywood Hills‚ California: An award-winning Hollywood hair stylist fatally shot an intruder as he tried to force his way into her home through a window in the middle of the night‚ police said. The woman’s neighbors told reporters that this was not the first time she’d been the victim of burglars. Oct. 16‚ Bellaire‚ Ohio: Police said a man shot and wounded an ax-wielding assailant who attacked him and another woman during a domestic dispute. The assailant was taken to jail on active warrants. Both his victims were hospitalized and treated for injuries. Oct. 19‚ Auburn‚ Washington: During an attempted home invasion‚ police said‚ three armed and masked men tried to force their way inside while shouting‚ “Seattle police!” The homeowner fired several shots through the door‚ sending all three men fleeing. Oct. 21‚ Wake Forest‚ North Carolina: An armed bystander with a concealed carry permit intervened during an altercation in a grocery store parking lot that was related to domestic violence‚ police said. The bystander returned fire when a man began shooting‚ causing him to flee. Police caught the assailant‚ who is charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill‚ among other offenses. Oct. 22‚ Skokie‚ Illinois: A man attending a pro-Israel rally got out of his car‚ which was covered in Israeli flags‚ only to be surrounded by pro-Palestine demonstrators‚ some of whom physically attacked him‚ police said. The man‚ a concealed carry permit holder‚ drew his gun and fired into the air. Police later determined it was an act of lawful self-defense. Oct. 25‚ Philadelphia: A convenience store employee fatally shot an armed robber who threatened him with a gun and started taking cash from the register‚ police said. Other employees told reporters that their armed co-worker had gotten his concealed carry permit and sought out firearms training after surviving an earlier armed robbery at the store. Oct. 28‚ Atlanta: A man was doing construction work at a residence when he saw a juvenile breaking into his utility vehicle and confronted him‚ police said. The juvenile drew a gun and fired. The construction worker‚ also armed‚ returned fire‚ striking and wounding the would-be thief. As these examples demonstrate‚ far more “good guys with guns” live in the United States than gun control advocates often care to admit. And they successfully protect themselves and others on a regular basis. Don’t be misled: None of the gun control measures proposed in the wake of last month’s Lewiston shooting likely would have saved a single life. Those measures certainly wouldn’t have been more effective than merely using existing laws to disarm those who‚ like that mass killer‚ are mentally ill and dangerous. The right to keep and bear arms won’t protect every innocent person from every evil‚ any more than seatbelts will protect every passenger in every car crash. The Second Amendment does‚ however‚ give them a fighting chance. Have an opinion about this article? Teachers Conference Lecture Declares Math a ‘Tool of Oppression’

Math can oppress students of color due to the inequitable system it was developed under‚ according to a slide presentation at the University of Oregon’s 2023 mathematics conference reviewed by The Daily Signal.  Oregon high school math teacher Jered Ratliff delivered a lecture called “Mathematics as a tool of oppression” at the Northwest Mathematics Conference in Portland on Oct. 14‚ which was sponsored by the University of Oregon.  “Recent politicization of mathematics has driven questions about its pedagogy in our schools‚ but these questions fail to recognize mathematics as a potentially oppressive tool‚” Ratliff’s description of the lecture reads. “Mathematics is our single most powerful academic building block‚ but the power it holds frequently allows it to inhibit discovery and societal good.”  Ratliff “is interested in exploring intersectionality of social justice and global power dynamics created by math systems‚” according to his biographical information on the math conference website.  The math education system in America was developed 200 years ago when only the children of white landowners were educated‚ according to Ratliff’s presentation. “It’s not saying that specific questions or standards themselves are racist‚” a slide depicting a text conversation between Ratliff and a friend from a few years ago reads. “But if the way we are teaching continually leaves people of color behind‚ why wouldn’t I want to dismantle the process that is least somewhat responsible for that inequity?” Ratliff continues to say that “math proficiency doesn’t mean superiority.” Only 30% of Oregon students tested as proficient in math in 2022‚ according to the Oregon Department of Education.  Ratliff is involved with Oregon’s Math Alignment Project‚ which released a series of modules on “equitable math” practices to disrupt “the systemic inequities of schooling.” Discussion questions in the modules encourage teachers to consider how their “potential bias” might “inadvertently reinforce inequities.” In the October presentation’s description‚ Ratliff said he would “share about math’s tremendous‚ often subtle‚ power that is more often used to stifle than it is to inspire.” “My dream is to see math fully and mutually used as a tool not to subvert but instead for liberation‚” he wrote in the session’s description. Ratliff told The Daily Signal he is seeking ways to “make math better.” “I’ve always loved math‚” Ratliff said in an email. “I’ve taught it in high school for 16 years. I don’t think it is racist. I do think it’s oppressive to many people‚ and I believe that is largely because I have yet to find how we have addressed the rapidly changing world by also innovating our math learning‚ discovery‚ and education.” From 1650 to present-day America‚ mathematical discovery has often been rooted in American colonialism‚ chattel slavery‚ and so-called subjugating systems‚ Ratliff said. He elaborated on this idea in his essay that was the basis of his Northwest Mathematics Conference presentation last month.  One of the conference slides said the “U.S. was once at the forefront of innovations benefiting humanity” but “shifted from innovator to subverting and stymying progress.” Thus‚ America is an “agent of ‘re-oppression.’”  Ratliff listed three steps to flatten the so-called math hierarchy in his slideshow: “Identify a structure or system with mathematics as its basis‚” “identify those in positions of power in this structure‚” and “identify those traditionally at the mercy of this structure” in order to “dismantle the hierarchy.” The University of Oregon did not respond to The Daily Signal’s request for comment.  Have an opinion about this article? How The Faces Of 3 Medieval Scots From The “Cradle Of Christianity” Were Revealed

In recent years‚ facial reconstruction technology has allowed us to come face-to-face with our ancient ancestors in a way that had never been possible before. From a 50‚000-year-old geriatric Neanderthal‚ to a medieval man with achondroplastic dwarfism‚ and the ever-enigmatic “hobbit” hominid Homo floresiensis‚ our forebears faces can now be revealed in stark relief. In 2022‚ archaeologists at the University of Bradford were loaned a set of three medieval skills by National Museums Scotland and the Dumfries and Galloway Council museums service. The skulls had been unearthed as part of an extensive project to investigate the history of Whithorn.Known as the “cradle of Scottish Christianity”‚ the priory at Whithorn was an important place of worship for more than 1‚000 years. Archaeological excavations at the site have revealed a veritable treasure trove of artifacts‚ including a carved stone dating back to the fifth century CE that is the oldest evidence of Christianity in the country. As well as objects of religious significance‚ there are a number of human burials at the site. As part of the Cold Case Whithorn project‚ in collaboration with the Whithorn Trust‚ archaeologists and forensic scientists set out to reconstruct the histories of some of the area’s former residents‚ including the three individuals to whom the skulls belonged.Once the skulls had been scanned‚ forensic artist Dr Christopher Rynn applied his considerable expertise to the task of bringing their faces to life.“This entails the use of facial soft tissue depths‚ musculature sculpted individually to fit each skull‚ and scientific methods of the estimation of each facial feature‚ such as eyes‚ nose‚ mouth and ears‚ from skull morphology‚” Dr Rynn said in a statement. One of the skulls was that of a woman‚ estimated to have been in her 20s at the time of her death. In an Instagram post‚ Dr Rynn explained that she was likely a high-status individual since she was buried alongside a bishop‚ but beyond that little is known about her life.    IFLScience is not responsible for content shared from external sites. With her was the skull of a man who had a cleft lip and palate‚ a split in the lip and the roof of the mouth that can occur when the tissues do not fuse properly during development in the womb. Nowadays‚ this can repaired through surgery‚ although many children will require some ongoing treatment. Reconstructed face of a cleric with a cleft lip and palate.Credit: Dr Chris RynnRounding off our trio is Bishop Walter of Whithorn‚ who died in 1235. Dr Shirley Curtis-Summers‚ a bioarchaeologist at the University of Bradford‚ was able to perform stable isotope analysis on some of the burials‚ which revealed some more clues about Bishop Walter’s life.“My role as a bioarchaeologist is to examine archaeological skeletons to identify indicators of disease and trauma. I also analysis human bones and teeth for stable isotope analysis‚ which can inform us about the types of foods people in the past were consuming‚ and whether they were local to their place of burial‚” Dr Curtis-Summers said.In the bishop’s case‚ we know that he had a penchant for fish‚ and that such a diet is indicative of his wealth and status. The same can be said for his elaborate burial – he was interred in a stone coffin lined with wood‚ complete with full clothing‚ his wooden crozier‚ and a ruby- and emerald-set gold ring. The facial reconstructions were unveiled as part of the 2022 Wigtown Book Festival and went on to be displayed at the Whithorn Visitor Centre. These types of reconstructions are adding a whole new layer to the already impressive amount of information that can be gleaned from archaeological finds‚ giving us a tantalizing glimpse into our history. After all‚ modern technology has made it possible to recreate our ancestors’ favorite tipples‚ learn about what kind of cheese they preferred‚ and even get an insight into the parasites that plagued them.As Dr Curtis-Summers put it‚ “This project is of huge significance‚ because while we can never tell the full story of the lives of these medieval people‚ being able to reconstruct their diet‚ mobility‚ and now their faces‚ allows us to delve into their past and come face to face with them.”

Azealia Banks Says Biden Running in 2024 Is 'Elder Abuse'

I usually can’t stand when celebrities get involved in politics. But you gotta admit‚ sometimes‚ it's kinda funny. Rapper Azealia Banks expressed support for Donald Trump's humor and 2024 presidential run‚ while other celebrities like Barbra Streisand and Cher are threatening to leave the U.S. if he wins again. Twitter reactions show that many find these celebrity political statements exaggerated and entertaining‚ with a vast majority indicating they don't care about celebrity opinions on politics. At times‚ it’s best to just sit back with a bowl of popcorn and watch the show.  In an interview with Britain's “The Standard‚” Banks admitted that “nothing can take [Trump] down.” Later she added‚ “He’s just f**king funny. He’s been through how many bankruptcies? How many wives? How many television shows? Seriously‚ nothing can take him down.” Banks also said that keeping Biden in office is “elder abuse” and that “she feels ‘way safer’ in her new home state of Florida where ‘everyone carries a gun‚’” Breitbart reported.  At the same time‚ with the 2024 election less than a year away‚ celebrities are pissed that Trump's in the running - again.  During a November 14 segment of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert‚ singer Barbra Streisand insisted‚ “I will move. I can’t live in this country if [Trump] becomes president.” On Biden‚ she claimed‚ “ I think he’s done a good job. He’s compassionate. He’s smart. He supports the right things.” Related: Singer Pink Plans to Pass Out Banned Books at Florida Concerts Streisand is not alone. Singer Cher told the UK's “The Guardian” that she “almost got an ulcer the last time” Trump won‚ adding‚ “This time I will leave [the country]” if he wins again.  Other celebrities will likely follow suit. In 2016‚ before Trump was elected‚ a long list of celebrities vowed to leave the country if he won. (Spoiler alert: they never left.) It's really funny when celebrities get their panties in a wad over political issues. Twitter users shared that sentiment and thought the celebrity complaints were exaggerations.  “I’ve noticed [in] the past week or so the reoccurrence of posts of mainly celebrities saying they are going to leave the country if Trump wins. It’s a ruse folks. They know we live in the greatest country on earth. They aren’t going anywhere‚” one user wrote. Another added‚ “Think about the arrogance that requires‚ are we supposed to change our vote to keep them? Why should I care if they leave.” Another user added a Twitter poll asking users if they cared about the opinions of celebrities. More than 85 percent of voters said "No" as of Friday afternoon.  Ultimately‚ while it is annoying as hell when celebrities get involved or try to get involved in politics‚ at times it is a little entertaining.  Follow us on Twitter/X: Pro-Palestine Activists Riot Outside DNC Headquarters pic.twitter.com/KfWz9CqAtx — MRCTV (@mrctv) November 16‚ 2023

VIDEO: Media HATE the Idea of Texas Enforcing Federal Immigration Law

On Tuesday‚ Texas lawmakers passed a bill which‚ if enacted‚ would permit state officials to arrest and deport illegal aliens. The media‚ aghast at the idea of anyone being deported ever for any reason‚ swiftly condemned the bill for “causing a lot of fear in the migrant community.” To bolster their case that this would be a Very Bad law‚ journalists brandished statements from radical pro-open borders entities like the ACLU‚ who smeared it as “one of the country’s most radical anti-immigrant laws — EVER.” Reporters applied no ideological labels to these organizations‚ instead describing them only as “civil rights groups” or “advocacy groups.”     On Wednesday‚ ABC’s Mireya Villarreal spent several minutes hyperventilating at the prospect of illegal aliens being deported. “This is causing a lot of fear in the migrant community‚” she whined theatrically. Never mind that lawbreakers are supposed to be fearful of prosecution — the migrants are scared! She continued: There is a big concern about the safety of migrants as they are being pushed back into Mexico… and a lot of migrants are also very fearful that if they do cross the border and they are arrested‚ will they be separated from their children? On Thursday‚ CNN’s Rosa Flores argued that the bill had “many critics‚ including 30 former immigration judges.” She added: “One other big concern is that this could lead to racial profiling of Latinos in the state.” MSNBC’s José Díaz-Balart also used the racial profiling angle on Friday morning: “Civil rights organizations and immigrant advocacy groups warn it could very well lead to racial profiling.” He went on to interview Congressman Joaquin Castro (D-TX)‚ arguably the most overtly pro-open borders member of Congress‚ who slammed the pending law as “a racist‚ dangerous anti-immigrant bill.” As usual‚ all of the media’s actual objections to enforcing existing federal immigration policy boiled down to some paraphrasing of‚ “But that’s mean!” The American media are further to the left on border security than they are about perhaps any other policy issue.
