New Jersey Teachers Union Calls For End Of Basic Skills Test For Teachers

New Jersey Teachers Union Calls For End Of Basic Skills Test For Teachers

One of New Jersey’s main teachers unions is calling for the end of the basic skills test for certifying teachers. The New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) is advocating for the demise of the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Reading‚ Writing and Math. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s signing of Bill S1553 would eliminate that requirement; NJEA called the test “an unnecessary barrier” hindering the alleviation of teacher shortages. “When the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) adopted changes to the administrative code around teacher certification‚ it missed an opportunity to eliminate this requirement‚ which created an unnecessary barrier to entering the profession‚” stated NJEA. We need you to take action! Last year‚ NJ eliminated the edTPA‚ a barrier to becoming a certified teacher. Now it's time to eliminate another barrier: the basic skills test for teachers. Urge Gov. Murphy to sign S1553 right away. #WEareNJEA https://t.co/XH694Vq7Eq — NJEA (@NJEA) November 8‚ 2023 Passing scores for the basic skills test are 156 for reading‚ 150 for math‚ and 162 for writing. The maximum possible score is 200. Certain educators don’t have to take the basic skills test: those who achieve an SAT‚ ACT‚ or GRE score in the top third percentile of the year they took it‚ as well as those who obtain a master’s or terminal degree with a 3.0 minimum GPA. Nicki Neily‚ founder and president of Parents Defending Education‚ insisted that there were better options for overcoming the teacher shortage other than reducing entry standards. “Teachers should be able to pass a basic skills test before they’re tasked with educating children in those core subjects‚” said Neily. CHECK OUT THE DAILY WIRE BLACK FRIDAY SHOPPING GUIDE You can eliminate some of the unnecessary red tape around becoming a teacher without eliminating a basic skills test. Teachers should be able to pass a basic skills test before they’re tasked with educating children in those core subjects. https://t.co/pJjTltuoQl — Nicki Neily (@nickineily) November 14‚ 2023 NJEA successfully advocated for the end of another teacher certification test last year‚ the educative Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA). NJEA criticized the edTPA as a costly‚ discriminatory‚ and unnecessary hindrance to overcoming the teacher shortage. NJEA represents over 200‚000 active and retired educators in the state. Governor Murphy may comply with NJEA’s petition; he spoke at their conference last week‚ and praised them for their advocacy in other teacher shortage reduction efforts. Murphy credited the NJEA for codifying over $20 million in funding for recruiting and training educators‚ stipends for student teachers‚ local partnerships expanding paraprofessional training‚ and over $4.1 million in teachers certification fees waived for about 18‚000 educators this past year. “These investments are crucial to solving our state shortage of educators‚ and none of them would have made their way into this year’s budget without the NJEA’s influence‚” said Murphy. Murphy also indicated that his administration would put Student Growth Objectives (SGOs) “on a diet‚” which he concurred were “bureaucracy-like.” The SGOs are long-term academic goals for students set by teachers in collaboration with supervisors. The governor’s remarks elicited applause and cheers from the NJEA conference crowd: “No more SGOs!” The governor called those critical of modern public educators “extremists” seeking to insert political ideology in schools‚ citing specifically those against LGBTQ+ ideology in classrooms. “They want to dim the light of truth and instead shroud our schools in the darkness of fear and intimidation‚” said Murphy. “Know that I have your backs unconditionally and always.” NJEA’s annual convention made headlines for another reason last week: for another year in a row‚ the union held a drag queen story hour. All schools close so that educators can attend the convention. This week dozens of schools in New Jersey closed as teachers attended the @NJEA convention. What did teachers do at this conference while thousands of kids stayed home from school? They were treated to drag shows‚ drag queen storytime‚ and “banned books” discussions featuring… pic.twitter.com/07R6o6UdQe — Libs of TikTok (@libsoftiktok) November 12‚ 2023

Elon Musk Announces New Policy‚ Phrases Such As “Decolonization” and “From the River to the Sea” Could Result in X Ban

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Elon Musk has announced a new change in policy to X. On Friday‚ his announcement established that the use of terms such as “decolonization” and “from the river to the sea”— phrases commonly thrown around by the pro-Palestine movement — would invite suspension on the platform as they imply genocide. The change came after pressure from major corporate advertisers. While these expressions have emerged as rallying cries in support of Palestinians‚ numerous individuals and groups‚ including supporters of Israel‚ Jewish advocacy teams‚ and others‚ perceive these phrases as eliminatory and anti-Semitic rhetoric that advocates the obliteration of the Jewish state and the Jewish people. Representative Rashida Tlaib faced official censure from the House of Representatives in part due to her endorsement of the phrase “from the river to the sea‚” and the phrase was chosen by Hamas as a slogan for the designated terror group’s 2017 revised charter. Musk‚ who once described himself as a “free speech absolutist” stated that phrases such as this are tantamount to “extreme violence.” He added: “At risk of stating the obvious‚ anyone advocating the genocide of *any* group will be suspended from this platform.” X has been criticized for not censoring enough speech regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict‚ with companies such as Disney‚ Apple‚ IBM‚ and Lionsgate‚ pulling advertising from the platform. X has been accused of both anti-Semitism and Islamophobia and it remains uncertain if the platform’s users will indeed be suspended for using the contested phrases. Politico Promotes Biden Triangulation on Border Crises as Election Gimmick

Politico was in such a state of panic over what they perceived as President Joe Biden's dwindling election chances in 2024 that they were hyping an election gimmick promoted by political author Ruy Teixeira‚ that came off as nothing more than a desperate election ploy of too little‚ too late. It was a mark of this desperation that it was the lead story of Friday's Politico Playbook‚ "The case for triangulation on immigration." After almost three years of largely putting little weight on the border crises during the current administration‚ Politico writers Ryan Lizza‚ Eugene Daniels‚ and Rachel Bade had finally‚ finally discovered that it existed... mainly because the issue was politically hurting Biden.  ...one of the most striking and consistent findings of 2023 polling is that voters give Biden especially poor marks for how he’s handling immigration‚ where his average approval rating is 34%. A Marquette Law School poll released yesterday continues the trend. Asked which 2024 candidate would handle immigration better‚ Trump holds a 50% to 27% advantage over Biden among registered voters — the largest gap between the two candidates of all the issues tested‚ just as in numerous other polls this year. The Biden campaign has a new plan to address this vulnerability: attack Trump’s extremist immigration policies. The problem with the Biden campaign plan‚ as the authors point out‚ was that 'Orange Man Bad' doesn't really work as a campaign tactic. “What did [Hillary Clinton] run on?” asked RUY TEIXEIRA‚ co-author‚ with JOHN JUDIS‚ of the new book‚ “Where Have All the Democrats Gone?” ($28.99)‚ during an interview on this week’s Playbook Deep Dive podcast. “It was all about how bad Donald Trump was‚ what a bad person he was‚ how sexist he was‚ how racist he was‚” Teixeira said. “He talked about issues. You may not have liked how he talked about issues‚ and he may not have been very specific‚ but he talked about issues‚ whereas Hillary talked about Bad Orange Man.” And now that Teixeira had been cited‚ the nervous Politico writers grasped upon his advice for a very gimmicky election ploy of triangulation by pretending to suddenly be concerned about the border after years of downplaying that crisis. In 2002‚ Teixeira and Judis famously published “The Emerging Democratic Majority‚” a book that seemed to predict the coalition of minorities‚ women‚ young people‚ knowledge workers and the party’s traditional working-class base that propelled BARACK OBAMA to the White House in 2008. Their new book‚ out this month‚ tries to explain why many of the working class voters in that coalition have since abandoned the Democrats‚ and the party’s handling of immigration policy tops their list of culprits. Teixeira and Judis argue that progressives have become victim to what they call the “Fox News Fallacy” — that if the conservative media machine seizes on an issue‚ it must be illegitimate. Teixeira sees it in the current immigration debate: “People streaming over the border who are not legal immigrants — this is not a good thing! … [Y]ou’re not going to persuade anybody against that point of view if you simply act like the problem doesn’t exist and this is all made up by the satanic‚ anti-democratic‚ quasi fascist people and the other side.” So‚ Democrats were supposed to take advice from someone who appeared to endorse lax immigration enforcement in his 2002 book as revealed by Atlantic magazine: In 2002‚ the political scientist Ruy Teixeira and the journalist John Judis published a book‚ The Emerging Democratic Majority‚ which argued that demographic changes—the browning of America‚ along with the movement of more women‚ professionals‚ and young people into the Democratic fold—would soon usher in a “new progressive era” that would relegate Republicans to permanent minority political status. The book argued‚ somewhat triumphally‚ that the new emerging majority was inexorable and inevitable. Since that plan failed to help the Democrats‚ Teixeira had a new shtick: Border Triangulation aka pretend to care about the border for purposes of the election. Biden wants $60 billion in aid for Ukraine before the end of the year‚ and Republicans in Congress are demanding border security provisions‚ including tightening asylum standards‚ in return. The White House has signaled it knows a deal is necessary. Burgess Everett reported yesterday on the most likely kind of compromise that could emerge from the current Senate talks: “[S]ome negotiators aren’t envisioning a deal they expect would appeal to progressive Democrats or conservatives who oppose funding Ukraine at all. An ideal Senate bill‚ in their view‚ would pass the chamber via the center-left and the center-right.” From the Teixeira-Judis view‚ the GOP is offering Biden a priceless opportunity: He unlocks aid to Ukraine‚ passes an immigration bill that he can campaign on to mitigate Trump’s biggest advantage‚ and he gets credit for another big bipartisan deal. A big bipartisan gimmick chock full of billions of dollars spent on a war in exchange for an immigration deal that likely would be as fully enforced as existing immigration laws by folks such as Alejandro Mayorkas. Such a deal! If only enough gullible Republicans can be found to swallow the highly laughable triangulation gimmick. Interestingly‚ there was not one mention in the story about the one person who was assigned to focus on this issue: Border Czar Kamala Harris.
