Rules for the Hunt: 7 Tips for Hunting Safety

by Jordan McDowell When you’re new to hunting‚ prepping for your trip is an exciting time. It’s easy and fun to imagine the trophy buck you might bag‚ the time in the great outdoors‚ and the psychological thrill of the hunt. But most people don’t imagine the possible dangers that can befall hunters and those nearby. Hunting and firearm accidents can and do happen‚ so it’s best to learn hunting safety precautions before you pack up your gear and hit the early dawn treestand.  Here are seven hunting safety tips that can help save a life or keep you and others from injury. 1) Practice Firearm Safety Many hunting accidents are due to hunters being careless with their weapons. Firearm safety should be learned well before you fire your first gun.  Here are the basics of firearm safety that are taught in any hunting safety course: Always treat your firearm as if it was loaded. Keep your safety on until you’re ready to shoot. Keep your finger off and away from the trigger until you’re ready to fire. Keep the muzzle of your gun pointed in a safe direction and never at another person. Be absolutely sure of your target. Never confuse game with a person or pets. Be aware of what is beyond your target. Never shoot close to another person or a dwelling. Learn and memorize these firearm safety tips and preach them to fellow hunters. 2) Know Your Weapon Whether you’re hunting with a firearm or a bow‚ knowing your weapon inside and out is very important. Before hunting‚ become familiar with shooting your weapon and properly maintaining it. Firearms should be cleaned after each use. Bows — longbows‚ recurve‚ and compound bows — need to have their bow strings waxed and replaced regularly. It’s a good idea to take a firearm to a shooting range to get a good feel for the recoil and to practice aiming. Learn where your firearm safety mechanism is and how to use it. You’ll also want to learn the specific types of ammo that you can use in your weapon and what type of game each works best for. 3) Keep Your Cell Phone on Your Person While gun incidents account for many hunting safety accidents‚ even more may be caused by falling from treestands. If your cell phone is in your backpack up in the treestand‚ it won’t do you any good when you’re injured down on the ground. Always keep your cell phone charged and in your pocket so you can call for help if needed for any reason. (Assuming you are within range of a cell tower and have service.) 4) Practice Treestand Safety When entering‚ sitting in‚ and exiting a treestand‚ a full-body harness should be worn. Many hunters make the mistake of removing their harness when sitting or standing in the treestand‚ and this is when falls can occur. Many hunters leave their treestands in place year after year‚ and the weather and frequent use can take their toll. Be sure to inspect your treestand at least once a year. Check the steps‚ the harness‚ and any parts that might get worn or loose. 5) Wear Blaze Orange  Yes‚ blaze orange can break up your camouflage‚ but it’s extremely important to wear the proper amount of blaze orange. The bright blaze orange helps alert other hunters to your position and that you’re not a potential game. You’ll also want to dress your hunting dogs in blaze orange for their own safety. Even if you’re hunting on your own private property‚ you never know what other people or hunters might be mistakenly passing through. 6) Alert Others About Your Trip A cell phone won’t always help you‚ especially if you’re entering an area that doesn’t get cell reception. Tell at least one other person where you’re going and when you plan to be back. When you’re done with your trip‚ let them know. If you don’t tell them you’re home safely and something has indeed gone wrong‚ they may be the saving lifeline that helps bring you home alive.  7) Check the Weather and Bring Safety Gear When hunting in northern regions in the winter months‚ snowstorms can easily blow through‚ causing disaster for hunters in remote areas. Moisture can cause hypothermia quickly. Bring the appropriate safety gear for your hunting trip‚ which might include: Extra clothing Rain gear Emergency blanket Water-proof fire-starting kit First aid kit Cellphone or satellite messenger in a waterproof bag Water and snacks A whistle Be prepared to prevent and handle cold weather injuries. Hunting Safety Courses  Most states require you to complete a hunting safety course prior to purchasing your hunting license. Some courses can be completed online and take about three hours to complete. The knowledge you can learn from in-person or online hunting safety training courses can be an invaluable addition to your hunting safety knowledge. Signing up for a hunting safety course is a fun and smart idea for all beginning hunters.  Hunting safety is for everyone‚ whether they’re 16 or 60 years old. And when hunting safety is learned‚ it’s even better to pass your knowledge on to the next generation of hunters. When hunting accidents are reduced‚ and game guidelines are followed‚ the public image of hunters is seen as conservationists contributing to healthy natural ecosystems.  Do you plan to go hunting this year? Do you have any other tips to add to this list? Have you ever run into trouble when out hunting? Please share your advice and stories in the comments. Dozens Of Statues Were Buried In A Mud Bath For 2‚300 Years‚ Preserving Them Perfectly

At most day spas and retreats‚ mud baths take about 20 minutes. At the thermal baths of San Casciano dei Bagni‚ near Siena‚ Italy‚ however‚ they can last for 2‚300 years – and it appears to work wonders. It was last year‚ after three years of excavations‚ that the team working on this ancient site finally started uncovering the treasures lying beneath the mud. Initially‚ it was just small things – a coin‚ or some minor part of a statue – but soon‚ they found themselves face to face with what experts hailed as one of the most significant finds in the history of the region. And when we say “face to face‚” we mean it literally.Three statue heads discovered at the baths.Emanuele Antonio Minerva - © Ufficio Stampa e Comunicazione MiCTwo dozen statues‚ perfectly preserved for more than two millennia thanks to the mud they were buried in‚ have since been revealed – alongside some five or six thousand gold‚ silver‚ and bronze coins. “We thought there could be something here‚ but nothing like what we found‚” excavation director Emanuele Mariotti told the New York Times. “It was like a time capsule waiting to be opened.”A statue‚ perfectly preserved by the mud‚ emerges for the first time in millennia.Emanuele Antonio Minerva - © Ufficio Stampa e Comunicazione MiCHailing from between the 2nd century BCE and the 1st century CE‚ these relics were created during a time of great upheaval in the region. It was “a historical period of important transformations in ancient Tuscany‚ in the transition between the Etruscans and the Romans‚” explained a translated statement from Italy’s Ministry of Culture; “[an] era of great conflicts between Rome and the Etruscan cities‚ but also of struggles within the social fabric of the City.”Yet‚ the team explained‚ the statues represent not just conflict‚ but a growing harmony between the two cultures. The discoveries come with inscriptions in both Etruscan and Latin‚ and they were buried according to Etruscan tradition – the bathhouse was struck by lightning during the 1st century CE‚ and a practice known as “fulgur conditum” required that they be buried in a sacred place. That the sacred place was water‚ though‚ is a Roman tradition: “You give to the water because you hope that the water gives something back to you‚” excavation leader Jacopo Tabolli‚ a professor at the University for Foreigners of Siena‚ told Reuters at the time.A statue head showing inscriptions around the neckEmanuele Antonio Minerva - © Ufficio Stampa e Comunicazione MiCThe statues‚ many depicting Graeco-Roman deities including Hygieia‚ goddess of health and hygiene‚ and Apollo‚ god of the Sun and healing (along with about a hundred other things)‚ originally stood in a sanctuary before being ceremoniously plopped into the water. They may have belonged to one of the families mentioned in the inscriptions; the researchers note that being made of bronze‚ rather than terracotta‚ is unusually ostentatious for the period‚ hinting at a home in what Tabolli called an “elite settlement.”But that’s not all the discoveries show. Even today‚ the springs of San Casciano dei Bagni are visited for their therapeutic properties – and more than two millennia ago‚ things were no different. Other statues are more terrestrial in subject matter‚ showing men‚ women‚ and children suffering from the various ailments that brought them to the baths. “This was a place of healing‚ meeting of cultures and medical knowledge‚” Mariotti said.A small statue of a child‚ likely used as a votive offering.Emanuele Antonio Minerva - © Ufficio Stampa e Comunicazione MiCSo‚ having at long last re-emerged‚ what’s in store for the miracle finds? They’re getting a brand-new museum‚ just for them.“This discovery offers San Casciano an opportunity that is not only cultural and tourist‚ but is a real opportunity for rebirth”‚ remarked Agnese Carletti‚ mayor of the town. “A new museum will be created in San Casciano‚ which will host the exceptional statues‚ and an archaeological park. Two new places which will be a real engine of development for the territory.”While many of the artifacts have already been exhibited this year at Rome’s Quirinal Palace‚ the researchers are still busy at the site. “We’ve reconstructed the structure of the sanctuary‚ but there is still much more to know about the overall site which must have been monumental‚” Tabolli said.“[This] is a unique opportunity to rewrite the history of ancient art and with it the history of the passage between the Etruscans and Romans in Tuscany.”

Chinese Rocket That Crashed Into The Moon Was Carrying A Mystery Object

A piece of human-made space junk slammed into the far side of the moon last year‚ initially leaving scientists stumped. After some astronomical detective work‚ new research argues that it was most likely a Chinese booster rocket – with an unknown object attached to it.On March 4‚ 2022‚ a mysterious object known as WE0913A crashed into the lunar surface‚ leaving behind an unusually shaped double-crater. While it was initially suspected to be part of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket‚ later evidence suggested it was a booster as part of the Chang'e 5-T1 lunar mission. China‚ however‚ denied any involvement. Now‚ scientists at the University of Arizona‚ California Institute of Technology‚ Project Pluto‚ and the Planetary Science Institute hope to put the mystery to bed. They mapped the object’s trajectory using ground-based telescope observations and concluded that WE0913A is part of a Chinese Long March rocket body from the Chang'e 5-T1 mission that launched in 2014.On top of this‚ they also found evidence that the abandoned rocket stage likely carried an “undisclosed‚ additional payload.”The unusual twin crater appears to be the result of a rocket booster that impacted the moon in March 2022.Image Credit: NASA/Goddard/Arizona State UniversityThe team made this claim with two lines of evidence. Firstly‚ the object did not appear to wobble as it fell to the lunar surface‚ but rotated in a fairly organized rolling tumble. They argue that this shows that the rocket stage was balanced out with a significantly sized counterweight to the two engines‚ each of which weighs 544 kilograms (1‚200 pounds). "Something that's been in space as long as this is subjected to forces from the Earth's and the moon's gravity and the light from the sun. So you would expect it to wobble a little bit‚ particularly when you consider that the rocket body is a big empty shell with a heavy engine on one side. But this was just tumbling end-over-end‚ in a very stable way‚” Tanner Campbell‚ first study author and a doctoral student at the University of Arizona Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering‚ said in a statement. "We know the booster had an instrument deck mounted to its top end‚ but those weigh only about [27 kilograms] 60 pounds or so. We performed a torque balance analysis‚ which showed that this amount of weight would have moved the rocket's center of gravity by a few inches – it wasn't nearly enough to account for its stable rotation. That's what leads us to think that there must have been something more mounted to the front‚” he added. Secondly‚ the researchers were also struck by the strange overlapping craters it formed‚ made of an eastern crater about 18 meters (59 feet) in diameter and a western crater about 16 meters (52 feet) in diameter. "This is the first time we see a double crater‚" Campbell explained. "We know that in the case of Chang'e 5 T1‚ its impact was almost straight down‚ and to get those two craters of about the same size‚ you need two roughly equal masses that are apart from each other." As for what the undisclosed payload was‚ Campbell and the team aren’t holding out for any answers."Obviously‚ we have no idea what it might have been – perhaps some extra support structure‚ or additional instrumentation‚ or something else‚" he said. "We probably won't ever know."

Just One All-Nighter Can Rewire The Brain And Reverse Feelings Of Depression For Days

Just One All-Nighter Can Rewire The Brain And Reverse Feelings Of Depression For Days

Have you ever pulled an all-nighter and wound up feeling wired‚ hyper‚ even a bit like you’re drunk? Well‚ scientists are looking to harness that feeling to see if it could help people suffering from depression‚ and a new study in mice has uncovered the changes in the sleep-deprived brain that seem to cause it.For most of us‚ the thought of having to forego a night of restful sleep is not a cheerful one. But‚ when forced awake by a nightshift‚ long trip‚ or last-minute study session‚ many people find they feel surprisingly upbeat the next day. You might describe it as feeling “tired and wired”‚ or giddy‚ or even a bit delirious (but in a good way).If just one all-nighter can have this kind of effect‚ scientists reasoned‚ this could help us better understand how the brain changes to affect our mood‚ and how some antidepressants‚ like ketamine‚ can kick in so quickly.  “Interestingly‚ changes in mood state after acute sleep loss feel so real‚ even in healthy subjects‚ as experienced by myself and many others‚” said Mingzheng Wu‚ postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University and first author of a new study into sleep deprivation‚ in a statement. “But the exact mechanisms in the brain that lead to these effects have remained poorly understood.”To learn more‚ Wu and the team performed experiments in healthy adult mice. They devised a system for keeping the animals awake whilst minimizing the amount of stress they were under‚ using an enclosure with a raised platform above a slowly rotating beam. The mice could either chill on the platform‚ or go for an explore down below‚ but they had to keep moving to keep out of the way of the beam. The authors tested the device and found that when mice were housed in it‚ they got significantly less sleep. After a night of sleep deprivation‚ the authors observed the mice behaving in a more aggressive and hypersexualized way. The culprit? Dopamine: the reward neurotransmitter. The authors could see that dopamine signaling was increased in the animals’ brains‚ but they weren’t sure whether this was specific to certain regions or a whole-brain effect. They took a closer look at four regions – the prefrontal cortex‚ nucleus accumbens‚ hypothalamus‚ and dorsal striatum – monitoring them for dopamine release and then silencing them one by one.“The antidepressant effect persisted except when we silenced dopamine inputs in the prefrontal cortex‚” explained senior author Yevgenia Kozorovitskiy. “That means the prefrontal cortex is a clinically relevant area when searching for therapeutic targets. But it also reinforces the idea that has been building in the field recently: Dopamine neurons play very important but very different roles in the brain. They are not just this monolithic population that simply predicts rewards.”This point about therapeutic targets is key. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)‚ depression affects 16 million American adults each year‚ and antidepressant medications are widely used. Whilst some people have found traditional antidepressants to be transformative‚ they don’t work for everyone and can have significant side effects. Studies are exploring the potential of new approaches‚ such as psychedelics‚ for the hardest-to-treat cases‚ but there’s always a need for improved understanding that could lead to new therapies. That’s not to say‚ however‚ that Kozorovitskiy would recommend pulling an all-nighter as a quick fix. Organisms may have evolved this state of heightened awareness for times when delaying sleep and being on high alert could protect them from predation and other threats‚ but over time the problems of chronic sleep deprivation will quickly begin to outweigh these benefits. It is‚ however‚ an important new avenue for researchers to continue to explore.“We found that sleep loss induces a potent antidepressant effect and rewires the brain‚” Kozorovitskiy said. “This is an important reminder of how our casual activities‚ such as a sleepless night‚ can fundamentally alter the brain in as little as a few hours.”The study is published in the journal Neuron.

Giant black cat filmed in Arizona: an exotic escapee or a native mutant?

What is the strange black cat roaming the Arizona mountains? That’s the question that has baffled wildlife experts and residents alike after a video (see below) of the mysterious creature went viral on YouTube. The footage‚ captured by a Phoenix homeowner‚ shows a large feline with a long tail walking down the mountain slope. The animal does not match any of the known species of big cats that inhabit the state‚ such as mountain lions‚ bobcats‚ ocelots or jaguars. It also seems too big to be a domestic cat that escaped from its owner. Some experts have speculated that the animal could be an exotic pet that was bought at a wildlife auction and somehow got loose. It could be a species from Africa or South America‚ such as a serval‚ a caracal or a melanistic leopard. However‚ this raises more questions than answers. How did the animal survive in the harsh desert environment? How did it avoid detection for so long? And most importantly‚ is it dangerous to humans or other animals? The Arizona Game and Fish Department has stated that they will not intervene unless the animal poses a threat to public safety or wildlife. They have advised residents to keep their pets indoors and to report any sightings of the mysterious cat. They have also warned against approaching or feeding the animal‚ as it could be unpredictable and aggressive. The mystery of the black cat remains unsolved for now. It is possible that it is just a rare mutation of a native species‚ or a hybrid of two different cats. It is also possible that it is a hoax or a prank‚ although the video seems authentic and unedited.
