When Inequality Is Fatal for Men

When Inequality Is Fatal for Men

Equality always has been an American preoccupation‚ right from the words “all men are created equal” in the Declaration of Independence. Yet even that phrase is not egalitarian enough by today’s lights; feminists long have objected to the gendered language of “all men.” Thomas Jefferson didn’t mean to commit a microaggression; in 1776‚ “all men” meant women‚ too. We know this because the Founding Fathers—must we say Founding Parents?—argued about the mismatch between their universal philosophy and the endemic inequalities of their time‚ with Abigail Adams asking her husband John to “remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors” when the time came for America to declare independence. Today‚ however‚ men and women are becoming increasingly unequal—and in one of the most basic measures of well-being‚ it’s men who keep falling further behind. Life expectancy has declined for all Americans in recent years. It’s fallen more for men than for women‚ though‚ producing the largest gender gap in nearly two decades. According to a study in JAMA Internal Medicine‚ as of 2021 women were outliving men by 5.8 years. As much as postmodern academics and progressive political activists may deny it‚ there are natural differences between the sexes‚ and the mere fact that women live longer is not so surprising. For one thing‚ men are disproportionately employed in the nation’s most hazardous jobs‚ including as loggers‚ roofers‚ construction workers‚ aircraft pilots‚ and steel workers. And if a male propensity for risk-taking makes men more successful in certain executive and entrepreneurial roles‚ it also leads to more men and boys dying young of misadventure and accident. But the gap in longevity has widened by a full year since 2010‚ when it was at an historic minimum of 4.8 years. Human nature hasn’t changed in that time; rather‚ something has changed in America to make it a deadlier place for men. COVID-19 contributed twice over‚ to the extent that the disease may have affected men more severely and they‚ in turn‚ were less inclined to take its flu-like symptoms seriously. Deaths from despair have ravaged both sexes‚ but suicide and overdose do exacerbate the gender disparity‚ with men at greater risk of dying from each of those causes. Unsurprisingly‚ men are also more likely to die by homicide‚ and when violent crime escalates‚ male life expectancy predictably will fall. But there are less obvious forces in play‚ too. Men are less likely to go to college or complete a degree‚ which in an increasingly service-oriented and knowledge-based economy translates into worse life and career prospects—conditions that foster deaths from despair. Whether ironically or cynically‚ progressives can be conservative and hidebound in their assumptions about inequality: They presume that whoever was more-than-equal in the past must still be privileged today‚ and so the one kind of inequality that doesn’t prick the progressive conscience is whatever harms groups that were formerly better off. Income inequality and racial inequality are outrages that fill the streets with protesters from Occupy Wall Street or Black Lives Matter—but there won’t be any protests over men’s worsening life prospects. Then again‚ the last thing men need is to be designated as another victim group. Right now‚ the very concept of manhood is under attack from two directions: from those on the left who see masculinity as inherently “toxic” and those on the right who idolize the likes of Andrew Tate—overgrown adolescent hedonists without an ounce of self-control‚ let alone any traditionally manly moral responsibilities for family or others. If life is unfair to men‚ the masculine remedy is not to complain about unfairness but to be tough enough‚ and mature enough‚ to endure and prosper despite inequality. That doesn’t mean that men don’t need help‚ especially when facing despair‚ but a sense of social or political victimhood is only destructive; what kills men is not something that can be solved with another equality-demanding movement. As dedicated as our Founding Fathers were to equality—even to the point of recognizing in principle‚ if not in practice‚ that the words of the Declaration of Independence applied to women and black people as well as to white men—they did not believe that everyone could or should be equal in every way. Men and women will forever be different‚ and the ways they differ will not always be favorable to men. Rather than seeing this as a betrayal of equality‚ or overlooking it as a politically incorrect fact‚ the best response is to treat men as men and women as women in their virtues and hardships alike—and look to men’s strengths for the answer to their plight. This Thanksgiving‚ Stuff Yourself With Gratitude

This Thanksgiving‚ Stuff Yourself With Gratitude

As people across the country prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving‚ a Doris Day quote comes to mind: “Gratitude is riches and complaint is poverty.” The American actress and singer was right‚ and this week especially‚ each of us should take a moment to consider the unique history of this quintessential American holiday‚ what science says about gratitude‚ and how celebrating Thanksgiving can improve your life. Thanksgiving has its roots before the Revolutionary War‚ of course‚ but it wasn’t until George Washington’s 1789 proclamation that the holiday officially became a national celebration. As with so many other things‚ Washington set our new republic on a solid course by encouraging all Americans to unite in setting aside Nov. 26 to render “sincere and humble thanks” to God “for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country.” Most subsequent presidents dropped the ball on Thanksgiving‚ especially Thomas Jefferson‚ who thought it was a violation of the separation of church and state. Indeed‚ the holiday largely was forgotten until Abraham Lincoln revived the tradition in 1862‚ setting Thanksgiving Day as the fourth Thursday in November from that time forward. When Franklin Delano Roosevelt—whose four terms in the White House reflected his fondness for breaking tradition—tried to change the date to prolong the Christmas shopping season‚ Congress stepped in and set Thanksgiving as the fourth Thursday in November by law in 1941. Thanksgiving‚ in other words‚ is like America: It has faced many challenges‚ but endured through each of them. And that’s a good thing. Researchers at the John Templeton Foundation have uncovered that “in general‚ more grateful people are happier‚ more satisfied with their lives‚ less materialistic‚ and less likely to suffer form burnout.” Other studies show that more grateful heart patients report better sleep‚ less fatigue and less inflammation. Grateful people were not only happier and healthier themselves‚ they also positively influenced others through higher levels of generosity‚ kindness‚ and helpfulness. Giving thanks improves relationships and can even make our homes‚ our workplaces‚ and perhaps even our country better places to live. Giving thanks is easier said than done‚ however‚ especially in a world where “anger has come to characterize our polarized political environment‚” as scholar Patrick Garry has noted. But despite all that there is to be angry about—from crime and inflation to war and wokeness—conservatives especially can’t give up on Thanksgiving. Gratitude is the heart of conservatism‚ and in the long run‚ it may even prove to be the virtue that “helps sand off the edges of anger toward those we disagree with” and unite us a country again‚ as conservative writer Pete Wehner has suggested. This Thanksgiving‚ then‚ how can you best use your holiday? For starters‚ you might consider avoiding politics altogether. Politics‚ which increasingly resembles a contact sport‚ rarely brings families together and it is hopefully not the most important thing in your life. But what is? This Thanksgiving‚ perhaps‚ consider reflecting on the four basic things that the wisdom of the Scriptures‚ Aristotle‚ and modern social science all indicate lead to human happiness: family‚ friends‚ work‚ and religion. Why not focus conversations on these topics‚ deeply connecting with friends and family? One tried and true way to do that is to count your blessings‚ literally. It is nearly impossible to make a list of all the things you are thankful for‚ but it is a great exercise and you’ll end up feeling much better than you did before. Although you certainly can do this individually‚ you might also suggest that everyone around the Thanksgiving table voice what they’re grateful for. If they’re hesitant to share‚ consider reminding them: “Gratitude is riches and complaint is poverty.” ©2023 Tribune Content Agency LLC Originally published by Tribune News Service Have an opinion about this article? Cosmopolitan Magazine Promotes Satanic Abortion Ritual: 'This Is the Most Demonic Thing I've Ever Seen'

Cosmopolitan was always the trashiest of the ladies' magazines one could pick up at your local Shop-Rite check-out aisle‚ but the dying of print and the squeeze put upon whatever shopping lane business they were still doing by self-checkout apparently has the editors over at Cosmo pretty desperate these days....

2024 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S and Super Adventure R Review | First Look

2024 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S KTM has announced the return of the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S and Super Adventure R for 2024‚ high-performance ADV bikes tailored to the street (S) and off-road (R). Both bikes return with the features riders have grown to appreciate over the years‚ as well as new color and graphic schemes. 2024 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R According to KTM‚ “While the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S will pound the roads and cope with the dust‚ gravel and light‚ loose ground‚ the ‘R’ is orientated for hardcore offroad adventurers who want and need premium kit to level any landscape or terrain.” The KTM 1290 Super Adventure S and Super Adventure R are both powered by a 1‚301cc LC8 V-Twin mated to a 6-speed Pankl transmission and a PASC slip/assist clutch. The heart of the bikes is regulated by a Bosch 6D IMU that provides inputs for the ride modes (Sport‚ Street‚ Offroad‚ Rain‚ and optional Rally‚ which includes 9-levels of adjustable MTC intervention)‚ Motorcycle Traction Control‚ cornering ABS‚ cornering lights‚ and (on the S) electronic suspension. When we put the 2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R on Jett Tuning’s dyno in Sport mode‚ the bike produced 126 hp at 9‚100 rpm and 88 lb-ft of torque at 8‚000 rpm at the rear wheel. While we’re not sure about no trail being of reach‚ he said of the Super Adventure R that it can “take you to places well off the beaten path‚” and when it came to the S‚ he said that “regardless of the condition of the pavement or the radius of the curve‚ the KTM is unflappable.”  See all of Rider‘s KTM coverage here. 2024 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S 2024 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R Both bikes have a 22-lb chromoly stainless-steel frame and vertically stacked LEDs with low beam‚ high beam‚ and cornering lights that illuminate sequentially as lean angle increases. The seat on the R is fixed at 34.6 inches‚ while the S has a height-adjustable seat (33.4 or 34.2 inches). Ground clearance also differs‚ with 9.5 inches on the R compared with 8.7 inches on the S. Additionally‚ the R offers adjustable handlebar positions‚ engine guards‚ and a skid plate. 2024 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R The Super Adventure S has WP semi-active suspension damping and anti-dive (WP Suspension Pro is an optional upgrade‚ as is Quickshifter+) offering 7.9 inches of travel front and back. The R features WP XPLOR fully adjustable suspension‚ with a 48mm split- cartridge fork‚ a Progressive Damping System rear shock‚ and 8.7 inches of travel at both ends. The S rides on 19-inch front and 17-inch rear tires‚ compared with 21/18 on the R.   2024 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S Stopping power is the same on both bikes‚ with a 320mm disc up front and 267mm in the back. Offroad ABS mode allows for dirt-specific ABS application on the front wheel while disengaging the rear ABS. 2024 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R Both bikes also have a 7-inch TFT display for full control over the ride modes‚ suspension‚ ABS settings‚ and adaptive cruise control. Additionally‚ the KTMConnect App boasts Turn-by-Turn+ guidance and waypoint markers while on the go and without having to stop and adjust any mobile device. The same functionality also extends to audio tracks and listing ‘Favorites’ when it comes to phone calls.  The KTM PowerParts collection includes additional gear and protection for the 2023 KTM 1290 Super Adventure bikes‚ such as extra protective parts‚ aesthetic touches through detailing‚ or travel items like luggage‚ racks‚ and bags. The 2024 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S comes in a new gray color scheme with prominent black and hints of orange. The R has a new sporting white color and graphic scheme. Pricing has not yet been announced. 2024 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R For more information‚ visit the KTM website.
