"Interstellar Alien Tech Meteor" Signal Was Actually Just... Vibrations Of Local Truck

Contentious claims that an interstellar meteor possibly containing alien technology hit Earth a decade ago is on even shakier ground – quite literally. Last year‚ pieces of the meteor were collected from the ocean off Papua New Guinea‚ though later analysis brought into question the "alien tech" nature of the spherules recovered. Now‚ it appears the soundwaves the team claimed were linked to the fireball were actually from the shaking of a nearby truck driving past. What we do know is that a meteor entered the atmosphere on January 8‚ 2014 – burning brightly as it did so. Using a recording from a seismometer on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea that they linked to the meteor‚ controversial and prolific Harvard professor Avi Loeb and his team calculated that the speed of the object was consistent with an interstellar object. If confirmed‚ it would be only the third interstellar visitor to the Solar System known‚ and the first to hit Earth. The recording also led them to propose a location in the ocean where the debris might have landed and sunk.In 2022‚ US military officials confirmed the interstellar object and the meteor's official name CNEOS 2014-01-08 came to be used interchangeably with Interstellar Meteor 1. However subsequent analysis suggests that the speed of the object was substantially overestimated‚ and may not be of interstellar origin after all.Loeb and colleagues went to Papua New Guinea and collected samples of these spherules‚ without the permission of the country itself‚ which has since accused them of "theft".  The spherules contained peculiar elements which led the team to suggest‚ among other hypotheses‚ that “this unfamiliar abundance pattern may reflect an extraterrestrial technological origin.”Now‚ a team from Johns Hopkins University argues that their seismic analysis is wrong too. What they linked to the meteor was "almost certainly" the motion of a truck moving on a nearby road. What's more‚ they put forward evidence that the meteor entered the atmosphere elsewhere and if fragments did land in the ocean they did so in a completely different place to where Loeb and team calculated. "The signal changed directions over time‚ exactly matching a road that runs past the seismometer‚" Benjamin Fernando‚ a planetary seismologist at Johns Hopkins who led the research‚ said in a statement. "It's really difficult to take a signal and confirm it is not from something. But what we can do is show that there are lots of signals like this‚ and show they have all the characteristics we'd expect from a truck and none of the characteristics we'd expect from a meteor."A satellite view of the seismographic station On Manus Island used by the researchers. A truck road is clearly visible.Image Credit: Roberto Molar Candanosa And Benjamin Fernando/Johns Hopkins University‚ With Imagery From Cnes/Airbus Via Google.Based on their new analysis‚ Fernando’s team estimated that the more likely place for the meteor to have landed is over 160 kilometers (100 miles) from the area investigated."The fireball location was actually very far away from where the oceanographic expedition went to retrieve these meteor fragments‚" Fernando added. "Not only did they use the wrong signal‚ they were looking in the wrong place."But‚ you might say‚ they found "spherules" of alien origin! I read it online! Well‚ analysis from another researcher has already highlighted how the anomalous composition was consistent with human-made pollution‚ stating “the meteoritic evidence is disfavored.”                                IFLScience is not responsible for content shared from external sites. As astrobiologist Caleb Scharf from NASA Ames pointed out on Twitter: “Well‚ they did indeed discover evidence of a technological civilization…right here on Earth.”Fernando’s team will present the findings on March 12 at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Houston.

Fossil Fuel Pollution Is "Literally Cooking" The Great Barrier Reef Right Now

It’s official: the Great Barrier Reef is being battered by yet another major coral bleaching event. This is the fifth such event in just eight years‚ marking a horrendous blow for the much-loved and much-troubled reef. The ongoing bleaching event was confirmed on March 8 by the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) in collaboration with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. The grim confirmation comes after helicopter flights over the southern Great Barrer Reef documented extensive coral bleaching in late February. The aerial surveys gathered dated on over 300 inshore‚ mid-shelf‚ and offshore reefs‚ in the Great Barrier Reef’s southern and central regions.“When bleaching becomes common across many sectors of the Great Barrier Reef‚ including both inshore and offshore reefs‚ it becomes a mass bleaching event‚” Dr Neal Cantin‚ a AIMS Senior Research Scientist who led the aerial surveys‚ explained in a statement.“As the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem is so large‚ the size of Italy‚ the heat stress across it isn’t uniform. As a result‚ we are seeing differences between reefs with respect to the number of corals that are completely white. This pattern largely follows the pattern of accumulated heat stress seen over the past few months‚” continued Cantin. Mass bleaching events are inextricably linked to warming ocean temperatures caused by human-made climate change. They occur when there's a breakdown between the mutually beneficial relationship between corals and the algae that live in their tissues. The coral provides the algae with surface area for photosynthesis‚ while the algae provide the coral with their surplus sugar. However‚ the algae can become stressed and leave the coral’s tissue when they’re subject to disease‚ pollution‚ or excess heat.    Without their algae comrades‚ the coral lose a major source of food‚ making them weak and susceptible to disease. The algae are also what gives the coral their bright colors‚ so their absence leaves them looking pale and white‚ hence the term “bleaching”.Given its link to climate change‚ bleaching events are a modern phenomenon. The Great Barrier Reef has seen previous mass bleaching events in 1998‚ 2002‚ 2016‚ 2017‚ 2020‚ and 2022. According to scientists at AIMS‚ the extreme temperatures seen in 2023 and so far this year meant that another bleaching event was somewhat inevitable.“In the last northern hemisphere summer there was record breaking heat stress in the Caribbean and the Eastern Pacific‚ causing severe and widespread coral bleaching. This mass coral bleaching event on the Great Barrier Reef is part of a global pattern of extreme heat‚ caused by climate change‚” explained AIMS Research Program Director Dr David Wachenfeld. In a video posted on X‚ Australian environment minister Tanya Plibersek said the news highlights why their government is "working hard to reduce carbon emissions in Australia‚ to do our part in the global effort to reduce carbon emissions‚ and also to make sure we're transitioning Australia to more renewable energy.” However‚ environmental groups have accused the government of being hypocritical‚ claiming they are pretending to protect the reefs while simultaneously bolstering the fossil fuel industry. “Claims that Australia is taking the health of the Great Barrier Reef seriously ring hollow when we continue to expand and subsidise the coal and gas industry to the tune of billions every year. The Australian government can not in good faith approve climate bombs like Woodside’s Burrup Hub and say that they care about the Reef’s future‚” David Ritter‚ Greenpeace Australia Pacific CEO‚ said in a statement. "Relentless pollution from coal‚ oil and gas is Australia’s number one environmental problem and it’s literally cooking the Reef. Our environmental protection laws are outdated and in desperate need of an overhaul to prevent new reef-destroying gas and coal projects‚" added Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie.

There May Be A Simple Trick To Remove Microplastics From Your Drinking Water

Microplastics have now become a major concern across the planet. Humans have spread plastic so far that they are impacting every aspect of the natural world. But they are also invading our bodies through inhalation and ingestion‚ the long-term consequences of which are still unknown. So‚ what can we do about it?When we say microplastics‚ as well as nanoplastics (plastic fragments that are 100 nanometers or less in size)‚ are everywhere‚ we mean it. The more we learn about these tiny pieces of plastic‚ the more they are turning up in new and worrying places‚ from the deepest points of the ocean to the highest peaks of mountains. They have even been found in Antarctic ice and are constantly swirling in the atmosphere. The almost ubiquitous presence of these fragments could also pose a serious threat to our health‚ especially as they have now been identified in our food‚ our internal organs‚ and even the placenta. Just recently‚ they have been found in the fatty deposits that build up in some people’s arteries‚ which may contribute to heart attacks‚ strokes‚ and even death. The future is plastic‚ and we should be concerned about that. But new research has offered at least one cost-effective and simple solution to help reduce one of the ways they can enter our bodies. Simply boil the water that you get from your tap.Eddy Zeng from Jinan University‚ China‚ and colleagues have found that boiling tap water for five minutes can remove over 80 percent of plastic contaminants.“A large proportion of the global population maintains the habit of drinking tap and/or bottled water‚ unintentionally overlooking the issues of [nano and microplastic] exposure”‚ Zeng and his team note in their new study. This is in contrast to many Asian countries‚ such as China‚ Vietnam‚ and Indonesia‚ where drinking boiled water is more common. However‚ as the team explains‚ even this habit is “often regarded as a local tradition and prevails only in a few regions.”As such‚ plastic-contaminated water poses a risk to many people across the world‚ which led the researchers to explore options to remove it.To test their thinking‚ the team measured samples of tap water for their nano and microplastic (NMP) content and found that there was an average concentration of 1 milligram per liter. After they boiled the samples for 5 minutes and let them cool‚ they found that more than 80 percent of the NMPs had been removed.“We estimated that intakes of NMPs through boiled water consumption were two to five times less than those through tap water on a daily basis‚” Zeng told New Scientist. “This simple but effective boiling-water strategy can ‘decontaminate’ NMPs from household tap water and has the potential for harmlessly alleviating human exposure to NMPs through water consumption.”It seems that‚ by boiling the water‚ the NMPs became attached to the limescale that comes from the calcium in the water. As such‚ this meant that boiling tended to be better at removing plastics from “hard” water – the kind that has a higher level of calcium in it.For instance‚ the study showed that boiling hard water containing 300 milligrams of calcium carbonate led to about 90 percent less plastic in the cooled product.Regardless of its calcium content‚ boiling water could still lower the amount of plastic it contains‚ which is important for people living in countries where tap water is consumed more frequently. The team concludes that their work offers a potentially valuable solution to removing plastic from contaminated water‚ but others suggest less reactive solutions‚ such as finding sustainable ways to limit the spread of micro and nanoplastics more generally. A first step could be to “modify drinking water treatment plants‚” as Caroline Gauchotte-Lindsay‚ an environmental engineer at the University of Glasgow‚ told New Scientist‚ so that contaminated water can be limited in the first instance. The study is published in Environmental Science &; Technology Letters.

Ancient Egyptian Mummies Are Riddled With Malaria‚ Worms‚ And Lice

The inhabitants of ancient Egypt were infested with parasites‚ many of which caused anemia and other debilitating conditions. According to a new meta-analysis of prior research on Egyptian mummies‚ around two-thirds suffered from worms of various kinds‚ while 22 percent had malaria and 40 percent had headlice. In the famous Valley of the Kings‚ for instance‚ four out of 16 mummies tested for Plasmodium falciparum – the microbe responsible for a deadly form of malaria – were positive. One of these was Tutankhamun‚ who was found to be infected by two different strains though probably died from falling from his chariot rather than as a result of malaria.According to study author Piers D. Mitchell from the University of Cambridge‚ 49 of the 221 Egyptian mummies analyzed for malaria tested positive.  “As such‚ we would expect malaria to have had a major impact upon child deaths and debilitating anemia in all ancient populations along the Nile.”Indeed‚ 92 percent of malaria-infected mummies display porous bones and other signs of anemia‚ which is characterized by a reduced number of red blood cells or depleted hemoglobin levels. “Such a disease burden must have had major consequences upon the physical stamina and productivity of a large proportion of the workforce‚” writes Mitchell.Other parasites detected in ancient Egyptian mummies include the mind-altering pathogen toxoplasmosis‚ which has been linked to schizophrenia and‚ bizarrely‚ an increased likelihood of dying in a car crash. “As toxoplasmosis can be caught by humans when they are in close contact with cats‚ it is possible that the disease occurred due to the role of cats as cult animals which were often mummified and used as religious offerings in ancient Egypt‚” explains the author.Mitchell also estimates that around 10 percent of mummies are positive for visceral leishmaniasis‚ which has also been linked to anemia and is fatal in around 95 percent of untreated cases. Stomach worms such as fish tapeworm have also been detected in two mummies and were probably caught by eating undercooked fish from the Nile.Another type of worm known as trichinosis was identified in the chest muscles of the mummy of an individual called Nakht‚ who has been identified as a weaver from the royal funerary chapel at Thebes. Typically contracted by eating undercooked pork‚ this nasty little nematode encysts inside muscle tissue and can cause death if it enters the heart.Poor old Nakht was also found to be riddled with worms that infect both the blood vessels and the urinary tract. Like 65 percent of other mummies‚ he suffered from schistosomiasis‚ an acute parasitic illness caused by worms known as blood flukes.Another mummy housed at the Manchester Museum even had worms in its brain‚ while 40 percent of 218 mummies analyzed for headlice turned out to be positive.Explaining this high prevalence of microscopic nasties‚ Mitchell suspects that “the River Nile acted as a conduit for tropical water-born parasites that would not normally be found in arid regions.” Malaria-carrying mosquitoes and other harmful pathogens could therefore have flourished in ancient Egypt despite low levels of rainfall. However‚ as well as bringing death‚ the Nile may also have helped to fertilize agricultural fields by depositing sediment during annual floods. As a result‚ farmers didn’t have to fertilize their crops with human poop‚ which may explain why ancient Egyptian mummies show very low rates of whipworm and roundworm‚ both of which were common throughout the Middle East and Mediterranean. The study is published as a chapter in the book series Advances in Parasitology.

ABC Gets Weak Knees Over ‘Aggressive’‚ Fiery’‚ ‘Tough’ Biden’s ‘Feisty’‚ ‘Rowdy’ SOTU

After polishing the White House’s apples on Thursday ahead of the President’s State of the Union address‚ ABC’s Good Morning America (GMA) were unsurprisingly hot and bothered by what they deemed to have been an “aggressive”‚ “fiery”‚ “tough” President doling out a “feisty” speech in a “rowdy” atmosphere against a “combative” and “not” civil GOP. Co-host and former Clinton hack George Stephanopoulos set the table‚ boasting that Biden “sparred with the GOP” and Republicans “shouted” back “as he spoke”‚ creating a “raucous...chamber” and thus “a clear contrast for voters”.     Chief White House correspondent/chief Biden apple polisher Mary Bruce was ebullient: [T]his was a feisty speech that‚ at times‚ felt more like a rowdy campaign event than a traditional State of the Union address. The President‚ well aware of the stakes‚ pitted his message directly against Donald Trump’s‚ repeatedly sparring with Republicans in the room in a way we’ve never really seen before. The President trying to show voters he is ready for a fight and has what it takes to serve another four years. Before diving into a hefty slew of Biden soundbites‚ Bruce swooned as though she were gunning for Karine Jean-Pierre’s job: “Overnight‚ a fiery President Biden kicking off the general election...Biden framing this moment as a fight for freedom in the nation’s democracy.” Biden came out screaming and yelling at Republicans over Ukraine and January 6‚ but Bruce seemed fine with that: “Straight out that gate‚ the President shaming Republicans for failing to fund Ukraine and calling out Donald Trump‚ though not by name‚ for saying he would allow Vladamir Putin to attack NATO allies...And firing a warning shot over Trump’s election lies.” Bruce also acknowledged Biden going back and forth with Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R-GA) over the murder of Georgia college student Laken Riley allegedly by an illegal immigrant‚ but refused to mention Biden misprounced her name‚ referring to her as “Lincoln”. The ABC tool also wasn’t concerned about Biden threatening the Supreme Court: “Looking ahead to the general election‚ the President vowing to fight for freedom‚ like access to abortion. Even taking on the court with the justices watching on.” She also relished Biden talking about his age (click “expand”): BRUCE: At the end of the night‚ Biden finally tackling head on those big concerns about his age —  BIDEN: I know it may not look like it‚ but I have been around awhile. [LAUGHTER] BRUCE: — turning the tables on his rival‚ Trump just three years younger. BIDEN: Lot of people my age see it differently. The American story of resentment‚ revenge and retribution. That’s not me. BRUCE: The President‚ with this parting shot.  BIDEN: At issue facing our nation isn’t how old we are‚ it’s how old are our ideas. Hate‚ anger‚ revenge‚ retribution are the oldest of ideas. But you can’t lead America with ancient ideas. It will only take us back. Bruce closed with reaction from the White House as though it were her own take‚ bragging they’re “thrilled with the President’s performance” and “feel he was fiery and tough‚ that he landed his punches and pushed back successfully against” Republicans in a “well-planned and rehearsed speech.” Senior congressional correspondent Rachel Scott ripped into the GOP‚ arguing they lacked any sort of “civility” and have sunk the State of the Union into being marred by “heckling”. This led to co-host Michael Strahan to agree (click “expand”) SCOTT: House Speaker Mike Johnson wanted decorum and civility inside of the chamber last night. That did not happen. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green was rowdy at times. downright combative. You saw her there breaking the House rules‚ wearing that make America Great Again hat in support of Donald Trump. She repeatedly booed the President‚ called him a liar. At the back of the chamber‚ we spotted Congressman Troy Nehls standing up‚ wearing a shirt with Trump’s mug shot on it. And‚ in a bizarre turn of events‚ George Santos showed up even though he was expelled. He technically is still allowed inside of the House chamber as a former member who has not been convicted of a crime. Now‚ as for the Republican response to Biden’s State of the Union address‚ it was delivered by one of the youngest members of Congress‚ Katie Britt. The junior senator of Alabama delivering this address from her kitchen table in Montgomery. She did focus heavily on immigration‚ calling Biden’s border policies a disgrace. And it is notable that she is from Alabama‚ the state at the center of the controversy over IVF. Now‚ Britt did try to create distance between that court ruling‚ insisting that Republicans believe in preserving access to IVF and expanding American families. But‚ guys‚ I gotta tell you‚ the heckling inside the chamber during these addresses really started to become a pattern. Guys? STRAHAN: Yeah‚ distraction and a pattern.  As GMA has started to do with political stories‚ Stephanopoulos gave own take and‚ of course‚ he was pleased with how Biden did in “address[ing] this age issue with his aggressive‚ feisty‚ ad-libbed delivery” and drawing “that sharp contrast with Donald Trump and the Republicans‚ reminding voters why Republicans have lost three elections in a row.” After a second half-hour news brief‚ Bruce reracked part of her report from the first hour‚ but tweaked her ending by saying “the White House is thrilled with the President’s performance” and believe “he nailed this”. Not surprisingly‚ this squared with how GMA saw the 2023 State of the Union‚ as they hailed Biden as being “fired up and fiery” but delivering “a message of hope”‚ making for “one of the best speeches” he’s ever made despite the presence of “bitt” and “rude” Republicans. Why Is My Puppy Sleeping So Much? 5 Vet-Reviewed Reasons

Click to Skip Ahead Sleep Requirements Reasons They Might Sleep So Much Getting Enough Sleep Puppies are great fun to bring home for the first time. They’re playful‚ loving‚ needy‚ and they happen to like sleeping. Sleep is a requirement for animals just as much as it is for humans.  But the big questions are: How much sleep does a puppy need and why do they sleep so much? Let’s answer these! How Much Sleep Should Puppies Get Each Day? Believe it or not‚ the average healthy puppy will sleep between 18 and 20 hours a day! Considering how quickly they grow‚ it makes sense that so much is needed. That said‚ many factors play a role when it comes to exactly how much sleep a specific pup needs to encourage and maintain good health. Age‚ size and energy level will all play a role. That said‚ if your puppy sleeps only 15 hours or more than 21‚ there is likely no reason for concern‚ provided they seem otherwise well. The 18- to 20-hour estimate is just that and not a rule set in stone. As puppies grow‚ their sleeping needs will also change. Most adult dogs will average about 12 to 14 hours a day‚ while seniors tend to dip back toward the 18- to 20-hour range. The 5 Reasons That Your Puppy Is Sleeping So Much 1. It’s for Growth and Development Image Credit: bane.m‚ Shutterstock Puppies spend day and night physically growing. All their bones‚ tendons‚ and soft tissues are constantly expanding and growing stronger. The central nervous system works hard to keep the entire body regulated and ensure good health. The blood cells‚ the brain‚ the skin‚ and even the toenails all require large amounts of energy to grow. Sleep aids a puppy’s body in growth and development because it enables the system to shut down‚ repair and process. No energy is being expended for walking‚ eating‚ or even holding up their head. The more a puppy sleeps‚ the more energy their little body can spend on building up the bones‚ brain‚ and other aspects to ensure a strong and healthy life as an adult. 2. It’s Tied to the Number of Meals We’ve all had that after lunch slump when you feel more like sleeping than working. That’s because after eating the body releases certain chemicals‚ like hormones‚ that can make you sleepy. It’s sort of the body’s way of shunting energy to digestion rather than other activities. Puppies have small tummies which require more frequent feedings than adult dogs.  This just means they have even more meals in which they feel tired after‚ potentially increasing the amount of sleep they get during the day. 3. It’s Hot or Rainy Outside Image Credit: CWR‚ Shutterstock When it gets hot‚ a dog wants to lie down and rest‚ no matter their age. This helps them stay calm and cool. If a puppy is playing around in warm weather and suddenly decides to take a nap‚ they are likely resting as a way to relieve themselves from the heat. When it’s rainy outside and everything seems dreary and quiet‚ a puppy is likely to comfort themselves by curling up for a long nap in a comfy bed or lap. This extra napping can make it seem as if they’re sleeping “too much.” However‚ this extra sleep isn’t likely anything more than just indulgent rest. 4. It’s Been an Eventful Day Being a puppy is hard work—everything is tough to do! It takes extra work to try to get on the couch‚ and it requires a great deal of strength to refrain from jumping all over the kids when they come home from school. When a puppy spends even just an hour excited‚ vigorous‚ and playful‚ especially when it’s a more rambunctious experience than usual‚ chances are that the pup is going to spend plenty of hours sleeping all the joy and excitement off afterward. A busy and eventful morning‚ noon‚ or night is sure to result in a nice‚ long slumber later. 5. Illness Image Credit: Javier Brosch‚ Shutterstock The above list are all normal reasons that a puppy may sleep so much. Now‚ let’s take a look at a couple of reasons that will require some attention. Along with their body‚ a puppy’s immune system is still developing. When you couple that with a puppy’s need to investigate every new dog and pile of dog poop‚ puppies have the potential to get sick-a lot. Whether it be a bacterial‚ viral or congenital illness‚ it may cause a puppy to sleep more. Sleeping helps the body focus on fighting the disease rather than barking at the mailperson.  Other signs of illness that you may see are vomiting‚ diarrhea‚ fever‚ not eating‚ and not growing. If you think your puppy is sick‚ be sure to contact your veterinarian. Also‚ keeping your puppy up to date on at least the core vaccines can help ward off illnesses that may make them more sleepy. A little side note here for small breed dog parents: these little pups are especially susceptible to hypoglycemia‚ or low blood sugar. Stress or long periods of not eating can deplete their small stores of glucose‚ potentially leading to lethargy and sleeping a lot‚ weakness‚ twitching and convulsions. Hypoglycemia can quickly become serious‚ so be sure to contact your vet immediately if you notice your puppy showing any of these signs. How to Make Sure Your Puppy Gets Enough Sleep Puppies are curious‚ playful‚ and interactive‚ just like human babies and toddlers. They also happen to be known for fighting sleep like toddlers do. Although they should be sleeping for between 18 and 20 hours a day‚ they are likely to try to break the rules with a few minutes of extra playtime or interaction throughout the day. If a great deal of activity is going on in their vicinity and it’s enticing to them‚ chances are that they will try to skip the nap that they would take and join in on the festivities instead. If a puppy doesn’t get enough sleep throughout the day and night‚ they are likely to develop signs like humans would when lacking sleep. These include: Lethargy Lack of focus Irritability/grumpiness Of course‚ puppies show these signs differently than humans would‚ aside from the lethargy. They might lack interest in a game or toy that they usually like‚ be careless where they relieve themselves‚ become impatient and/or aggressive with other pets in the household‚ or act “grumpy” toward their human companions. Encourage your puppy to nap by setting up a comfy bed in a quiet place in your house. Try to keep it out of the main stream of activities so that your puppy won’t be enticed to play instead of sleep. Stick to a schedule of interaction and playtime mixed with some downtime so that they know a little sleep now means more play later and be less likely to fight their nap. Conclusion Puppies require a large amount of sleep to keep up with their growth and developmental needs. They may also sleep a little more depending on the weather or if they are sick. If your puppy seems happy‚ spunky‚ and healthy when they are awake‚ chances are that they’re doing fine. However‚ if you have any concerns or questions at all‚ don’t hesitate to schedule a consultation appointment with your veterinarian. Also see: Why Does My Puppy Breathe So Fast While Sleeping?
