President Joe Biden says the U.S. “shall respond” after a drone attack Sunday left three U.S. Army soldiers dead and more than 30 others wounded at a base in Jordan.  Iran-backed militias were reported to be responsible for the deadly drone attack‚ and in response‚ Robert Greenway says‚ the U.S. needs to make Iran “feel the cost” of its actions. (Iran denied any responsibility for the attack.) Greenway‚ director of the Allison Center for National Security at The Heritage Foundation‚ says the attacks will continue if Iran does not feel swift and certain consequences. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) Greenway‚ who served on the National Security Council in the Trump administration‚ says he would advise Biden‚ first‚ to “stop paying them [Iran] money. A Roman silver toilet spoon discovered by a metal detectorist in Wales was officially declared Treasure by the regional coroner last Thursday. The silver ligula was found by detectorist Valentinas Avdejevas in the Vale of Glamorgan in June 2020. It consists of a small circular bowl with a long‚ tapering handle that comes to a rounded point. It is very petite‚ just 2.5 inches end-to-end with the bowl just .2 inches in diameter. Originally straight‚ the spoon is now bent in two places: the bowl is almost at a right angle‚ and the handle bends again about two-thirds of the way down. The ligula was a small spoon with a slender handle used to scoop cosmetics‚ perfumes or unguents out of long-necked bottles. (So toilet in the sense of ablution rather than going to the lavatory.) They are usually plain and undecorated‚ although some examples have been found with molded bands or incised lines. They were created out of a single piece of metal crafted into a cylinder and then the end hammered into the bowl. Most of the ligulae that have been found are made of copper alloy. The silver ones are more rare and based on some of the contexts where they have been found‚ archaeologists believe the silver examples may have been dedicated to medical purposes (eg‚ for pharmaceutical portioning‚ or as surgical curettes or sounds) rather than used for personal hygiene or adornment. Because it is more than 300 years old and composed of more than 10% precious metal‚ the ligula meets the criteria for Treasure under the Treasure Act of 1996. It will now be assessed to determine a fair market value by the Treasure Valuation Committee. Local museums will then be given the opportunity to acquire the toilet spoon for the assessed value. The Cowbridge and District Museum has already expressed interest in acquiring the ligula for its collection.

Across the dial the network evening network newscasts‚ using the same talking points‚ pumped the Senate-White House border deal‚ and knocked Republicans opposing the deal. And in so doing‚ they left out some pretty important details. For a representative sample of how the coverage went‚ here’s how ABC World News Tonight anchor David Muir introduced Mary Bruce’s report: DAVID MUIR: And we're going to turn now to the U.S. border with Mexico. For months‚ Republicans have been pushing President Biden‚ arguing‚ if you want funding for Ukraine and Israel‚ the U.S. must act at the U.S. border. Now‚ a bipartisan group of senators‚ Democrats and Republicans‚ say they're close to a deal‚ for the first time in many years. President Biden says he'll support it. But now Republicans‚ led by Donald Trump‚ say they don't want a deal after all.  That’s basically the template. Border deal has been negotiated by Nice Grandpa and Less Bad Republicans‚ Bad Orange Man says deal bad‚ Bad Republicans say deal bad. Also‚ Bad Republicans want to impeach DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. As simplistic as it sounds‚ that’s how the reporting went. The only major variance being that NBC opened with Mayorkas’ impeachment while everyone else closed with that. But a few key details were left out. The networks have purposefully left out the fact that House Republicans have passed a bill of their own which they’ve established as a precondition for the appropriation of any monies to Ukraine- H.R. 2. Of course‚ this is intentional inasmuch as it allows the media to falsely cast House Republicans‚ led by Speaker Mike Johnson‚ as a bunch of do-nothings obstructing the Senate compromise. But the record reflects that the bill has been sitting in the Senate for over 8 months now.  Another thing omitted by the networks is the fact that the president does not need legislation in order to begin to fix the crisis along the border. At a bare minimum‚ he can just reverse the swath of executive orders he signed upon taking office. To mention this is verboten‚ of course‚ because it clearly places the blame for the border disaster squarely on the feet of Joe Biden.
