Continuity and Discontinuity: The Rhythm of Redemption
The themes of continuity and discontinuity are two of the most important concepts in theology and philosophy. They are intricately woven throughout the Christian understanding of history, law, and redemption. These two categories serve as a comforting reminder of the divine order and stability in God’s purposes, and the ways He brings radical change to renew His people and His world.
Continuity highlights what remains constant… God’s law, covenant promises, and moral order. Discontinuity marks the turning points… God’s decisive acts of judgment, redemption, or transformation that reset the course of history.
Together, these two ideas explain how God governs the world: continuity provides stability, while discontinuity brings change and renewal. Both are necessary for a biblical vision of history, society, culture, and personal faith. Both are also very practical and are essential. They need to be on our tool belts for daily life.
So What Do I Mean by Continuity and Discontinuity?
Continuity refers to the persistence of God’s law, covenant order, and ethical standards through all of history. God’s moral commands do not shift with culture or time, and His promises remain sure from generation to generation.
Discontinuity, on the other hand, refers to God’s radical interventions in history… such as the Exodus, the Incarnation, the Resurrection, and the new birth in Christ. These events, with their transformative power, disrupt the brokenness of a fallen world, bringing hope and inspiration and ushering in new realities for God’s people.
Continuity ensures faithfulness and order; discontinuity brings the breakthroughs of grace that reset history and renew covenant life.
Law… Covenant… and Renewal
One perspective emphasizes that the true foundation of any just society is God’s revealed law. Human institutions and cultures can only enjoy lasting stability when rooted in God’s covenant order.
At the same time, history shows that sin often corrupts society, leading to degeneration and decline. In those moments, God’s gracious acts of discontinuity… whether through judgment or personal regeneration… break the cycle and re-establish order. Renewal, then, comes through God’s interruptions that restore covenantal stability.
The Divide Between Worldviews
Another perspective highlights the sharp antithesis between Christian and non-Christian thought. In this view, there is an unbridgeable discontinuity in the way believers and unbelievers see the world.
Unbelieving philosophies ultimately collapse into fragmentation because they lack the foundation of God’s revelation. By contrast, Christian thought, with its emphasis on coherence and divine revelation, enlightens and empowers believers, since it rests on God’s sovereign truth.
Here, continuity belongs only to the Christian worldview; all other systems reveal their ultimate discontinuity.

This balance between continuity and discontinuity undergirds the Christian conviction that God’s law must guide not only personal conduct but also culture, politics, and social life.
History, Dominion, and Transformation
These concepts need to be applied to the two categories in the study of history itself. Covenant continuity preserves faith and law across generations, while major events, such as the Exodus or Christ’s resurrection, mark pretty sharp discontinuities that reshape the people of God.
Even in broader social changes, such as political revolutions, we see that even radical breaks are always mixed with deep continuities. I suggest reading that last sentence again. Not sure what could be more important. Transformations do not occur through total rupture but through God-ordained discontinuities that build upon His enduring covenant foundations.
The Bigger Biblical Picture
The categories of continuity and discontinuity reflect the larger biblical storyline: Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Judgment.
Time is not cyclical or meaningless but moves forward under God’s sovereign plan. The most profound discontinuity is regeneration… moving from death to life in Christ.
This transformation breaks cycles of rebellion and restores believers into the continuity of God’s kingdom. In this way, discontinuity serves continuity, as God’s interruptions always aim to create new patterns of faithfulness.
True Transformation vs. False Revolution
Okay, the Bible presents a stark difference between secular revolutions and God’s redemptive interruptions. Political revolutions almost always bring chaos, severing continuity without providing a stable foundation.
God’s work of renewal, however, introduces discontinuity to build lasting continuity… shaping culture, law, and society around His Word. These redemptive interruptions are God’s acts of grace and mercy that disrupt the brokenness of the world, bringing transformation and ushering in new realities for His people.
Real change, then, does not come through violent upheaval, but through repentance, regeneration, and obedience. This is true for individuals, families, churches, and nations.
Repentance is the turning away from sin and towards God, regeneration is the spiritual rebirth in Christ, and obedience is the faithful adherence to God’s commands. These are the means through which God steadily transforms the world, building lasting continuity on the foundation of His redemptive interruptions.
The Dance of Stability and Change
The Christian vision of continuity and discontinuity shows that God’s plan for history involves both stability and transformation. Continuity reminds us that God’s law, promises, and order remain constant.
Discontinuity points to His mighty acts of judgment and redemption, which break into history to restore covenant faithfulness. Together, these twin themes help us understand how God rules His world: not by chaos or chance, but by weaving together permanence and renewal… always working toward His ultimate purposes in Christ.
It is in Christ that the fullness of God’s redemptive plan is revealed, and it’s through Him that continuity and discontinuity find their ultimate meaning and fulfillment.
