A three-legged rescue sheep is getting the care she needs‚ and that includes a replacement for her prosthetic leg. Woodstock Sanctuary shared a video on TikTok about one of their sheep who requires some help getting around. Due to a complication with her previous prosthetic‚ the animal was fitted for new equipment. It’s so much easier for her to walk now! Cat (that’s the sheep’s name!) got to take her prosthetic leg for a test drive at My Pet’s Brace before taking it home. Although it took her a little while to get used to the new appendage‚ her life at the sanctuary has been much improved by the upgrade! More recent footage shows Cat happily trotting alongside her fellow sheep. A school in Nigeria is taking an innovative approach to tackle the problem of plastic waste while also promoting education. The Morit International School‚ located in Ajegunle‚ a densely populated area of Lagos‚ Nigeria‚ has launched an initiative that allows students to pay their tuition fees using plastic bottles. However‚ even with these lower rates‚ Mbamarah realized that families were still struggling to pay the fees. In doing so‚ he uncovered a novel solution that not only solved the financial challenges that families in his neighborhood faced but also addressed the issue of plastic trash. The community’s response One parent‚ Ijeoma Obiora‚ couldn’t believe that a school would accept tuition fees in plastic bottles. Today‚ her 13-year-old daughter is happily attending Merit International School.  “Academically‚ the school is very good for my daughter‚ who’s now in JSS 1. Financially‚ it removes my worries about having to provide education for her on a stringent budget‚” Obiora shares. “These days‚ the first thing I do when I see a plastic bottle that has been thrown away is to pick it up. I don’t even think twice‚ the only thing on my mind is collecting waste to take to school.” Students‚ parents‚ and the local government have all expressed enthusiasm for the program. Many cat owners are used to interpreting their pet’s feelings through meows and purrs‚ but the mysterious realm of feline communication is much deeper. A recent study has revealed cats’ secret language‚ finding that these seemingly stoic creatures have approximately 300 various facial expressions to indicate their emotions‚ ranging from cute smirks to violent hissy faces. Cracking the kitty code Lauren Scott and Brittany N. Florkiewicz undertook this revealing study as part of their mission to deconstruct the complex world of cat-to-cat communication. Their laboratory was a cat cafe in Los Angeles‚ which housed a thriving colony of 53 cats. The researchers were especially interested in the subtle expressions these cats displayed when engaging with their feline buddies after the cafe’s doors closed for the night. Over the course of ten months‚ they methodically recorded 276 distinct facial expressions among the cat population. Each of these expressions was a combination of four of the 26 distinct facial motions‚ which included actions such as opened lips‚ dilated or constricted pupils‚ blinking‚ nose licks‚ and ear positions. Their findings revealed that 45 percent of these expressions indicated friendliness‚ while 37 percent clearly emanated anger. The remaining 18 percent were a mystery‚ falling into a murky area where interpretation may go either way. Cats’ encrypted language Deciphering exactly what cats were saying to each other was difficult‚ but some intriguing patterns emerged. During friendly contact‚ cats’ ears and whiskers tend to travel toward their fellow felines‚ while they retreat these facial features during antagonistic encounters. Additionally‚ narrowed pupils and lip licking appeared as warning indications of an imminent encounter. The study highlighted an intriguing example of a quick change in mood‚ in which two cats went from a lighthearted friendship to a fierce exchange. Following a thrilling round of play‚ one of the cats abruptly bent down and hissed before fleeing in a show of aggressiveness. Discovering the common ground A surprise conclusion arose in the midst of these feline mysteries. Humans‚ dogs‚ and other animals all have a “common play face” with cats. This expression has the corners of the mouth pushed back and the jaw lowered‚ providing a warm and welcoming smile. Io is a world like no other‚ at least within the Solar System. Eruptions from 400 active volcanoes constantly turn it inside out. The Juno spacecraft has provided stunning images of this moon of Jupiter taken during its first flyby. Already‚ image processors‚ professional and amateur‚ are drawing out details that might be missed in the raw photographs.We’ve known there was something odd about Io for more than 400 years. Its discovery‚ along with the other three Galilean satellites‚ rocked astronomy. Once the shock of its existence wore off‚ people noticed its red coloring‚ while the three other large moons of Jupiter are white. The Voyager missions revealed what was special about it: volcanic eruptions are constantly resurfacing the planet. Most other moons of gas giants are covered in ice‚ but Io’s surface has a lot of sulfur. Carl Sagan called it a world “smelling like rotten eggs and looking like a pizza pie”.You can reach your own judgment about what Io most resembles‚ but whizzing just 1‚500 kilometers (930 miles) above Io’s surface‚ Juno has returned stunning images that will be poured over for years to come. Juno has been orbiting Jupiter for seven years‚ but for most of that time its focus has been on the planet itself. Only now is attention turning to the moons.The close passage is about more than just taking high-resolution images of the surface. Io and Europa are both surrounded by donut-shaped rings of ions thanks to their location within Jupiter’s immense magnetic field. Juno flew through that. The data collected should be important scientifically‚ as well as being used to prepare JUICE and the Europa Clipper to make similar passages safely.Not every method of processing Juno's images is attractive‚ but that doesn't stop them being interesting.Image Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/MSSS/Thomas Thomopoulos CC BY-SA 3.0Juno will make another close pass of Io on February 3. Io’s gravity has already reduced Juno’s orbital period from 38 to 35 days‚ and the next passage will bring that down to 33 days. That passage will allow planetary scientists to compare the images to seek changes to Io’s surface in a short period of time. There will be further flybys of Io every second time Juno approaches Jupiter‚ but none will be as close as these two.Image processing from Juno’s controllers will take time‚ but already plenty of others are onto the task. IFLScience is not responsible for content shared from external sites.Io’s intense volcanism comes from having its innards constantly stretched and relaxed through its changing distance from Jupiter and the gravitational tug of the accompanying moons. At Europa’s more comfortable distance from the gravity well‚ these effects create enough heat to melt the ice beneath the outer shell and create an internal ocean. Closer in‚ Io generates much more heat‚ turning rocks molten and leading the magma to burst through the surface.
