Europe’s “Disinformation” Enforcers Pressure Platforms to Tighten Speech Controls

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. A recent assessment by the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO) has cast doubt on the effectiveness of Big Tech’s efforts to combat so-called “disinformation” under the European Union’s Code of Practice. The report, however, highlights a troubling trend: growing pressure on platforms like Google, Meta, Microsoft, and TikTok to police speech in ways that risk undermining open discourse. Since signing the voluntary code in 2018, these companies have faced increasing demands to regulate content, including avoiding ad placements near alleged disinformation, labeling content deemed misleading, and sharing platform data with researchers. These voluntary measures are set to become enforceable through the EU’s Digital Services Act starting July 1, raising further concerns about the future of free expression online. EDMO’s evaluation of platform activity during the first half of 2024 accused the firms of falling short in areas tied to transparency and accountability. “The assessment identifies consistent gaps in transparency, independent oversight, and measurable outcomes across all commitments,” the report stated, warning that the code “risks remaining performative” unless companies impose stricter controls. Such calls for tighter restrictions inevitably edge toward censorship, threatening the diversity of views that the internet was meant to protect. The report criticized the companies for not providing sufficient evidence of their efforts, despite their public promises. While Meta and Google were noted for launching certain initiatives, EDMO dismissed many as “superficial or symbolic.” The report lamented the absence of “user engagement figures, no reported outcomes, and no indication of the actual scale of these efforts,” suggesting that Big Tech’s reluctance to flood users with heavy-handed interventions is somehow a failing, rather than a safeguard of free speech. Digital literacy initiatives, including Meta’s “We Think Digital,” Google’s “More About This Page” tool, and Microsoft’s collaboration with NewsGuard, were similarly faulted for lacking detailed metrics. EDMO researchers questioned whether these were “declarative gestures” rather than substantive programs. Fact-checking labels and prompts intended to inform users about allegedly inaccurate content exist across platforms, but EDMO took issue with the limited performance data shared. Although Google provided broad reach figures, the organization noted the lack of evidence on how these measures altered behavior, a demand that implicitly seeks more control over how individuals interpret information. Among the companies reviewed, TikTok alone was deemed to have met the baseline for supporting independent research. Even so, EDMO criticized the complexity of accessing its Research API, and faulted other platforms for limiting the scope of their research programs and tightly controlling data access. While framed as a transparency issue, these restrictions arguably serve as necessary checks on the overreach of external monitors eager to shape online narratives. EDMO’s findings, based on expert surveys, internal analysis, and transparency documents, reflect a broader tension: the increasing conflation of content moderation with mandatory censorship, all in the name of combating disinformation. As the EU moves toward legally binding requirements, the stakes for freedom of expression in the digital space have never been higher. PROPAGANDA: Univision’s NYC Post-Primary Wrap an In-Kind Ad for Zohran Mamdani

Univision’s midday newscast could not conceal its gleeful squeeing over Zohran Mamdani’s win in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary. And some of the coverage the next day was so over-the-top that Mamdani should consider disclosing it on his campaign finance forms as an in-kind donation. Watch as midday anchor Borja Voces closes the report out with what sure sounds like a call to action: BORJA VOCES: (Mamdani) is a member of the New York State Assembly since 2021, and he considers himself to be a Democratic Socialist. Now, then. Among his proposals, the ones that have attracted the most attention are these: free bus service, a rent freeze, he also wants to create a chain of low-cost supermarkets. And finally, he wants to provide free childcare for kids between six weeks and five years of age. And the million-dollar question: Will he become the next mayor of the Big Apple? Only time, and your vote, will decide. It’s the hammering home of “YOUR VOTE WILL DECIDE” for me. Such gushing for socialists is not out of place at Univision, which rendered similar worship to Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez when she burst upon the national scene. They now go all out, as does the legacy media, to squeal over the new socialist on the block. The warm biography gives way to the least damaging description of Mamdani’s policy proposals, which includes zero pushback on any idea. We’ll be watching to see how they cover Mamdani’s proposal to institute city-run stores, which would likely decimate neighborhood bodegas.  Not only is there glowing coverage of some of Mamdani’s proposals, but there is outright omission of some of his other ideas. There is no mention, for example, of Mamdani’s proposed tax increases. Likewise, there is no mention of his past calls to defund the police. No matter how unhinged the policies may be, the socialist must always be cast in warm light- Whether at Univision or anywhere else in the media. Click “expand” to view the full transcript of the aforementioned report as aired on Noticiero Univision Edición Digital on June 25th, 2025: NOTICIERO UNIVISION EDICIÓN DIGITAL 6/25/25 12:07 PM BORJA VOCES: Let's completely change the subject.Check it out: a surprise in the Democratic primaries for Mayor of New York. Zohran Mamdani, a Muslim who is  just 33 years old, he, yes? has defeated a Big Apple heavyweight. None other than former Governor Andrew Cuomo. But who is this progressive-leaning politician? I'll explain. Mamdani was born in 1991 in Uganda to an Indian family. He immigrated to the United States as a child and grew up in New York City. He holds a degree in African studies from Bowdoin College, where he co-founded the university chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine. Before entering politics, he worked as a housing counselor helping low-income homeowners in heavily Hispanic neighborhoods, such as Queens. He is a great advocate for the working class. On the other hand, he is a member of the New York State Assembly since 2021, and he considers himself to be a Democratic Socialist.

NY Times Cites Poor Polling for Trump on Iran, But Made Excuses for Obama on Libya

After gushing over Zohran Mamdani’s win in New York City's Democratic mayoral primary, Wednesday’s New York Times “On Politics” newsletter featured a segment about how President Trump’s devastating strike on Iran’s nuclear capability is polling among Americans, under the subhead “A wary public isn’t convinced on Iran strikes.” My colleague Ruth Igielnik, The Times’s polling editor, helps us dig into the numbers. Today, she looks at disapproval of President Trump’s decision to launch airstrikes against Iran. The decision to attack Iran is broadly unpopular: 56 percent of Americans disapprove of the strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, and 58 percent believe the action will make Iran more of a threat to the United States, according to a CNN/SSRS poll conducted on Sunday and Monday. After admitting that “Trump’s base has gotten onboard,” Bidgood kept bringing the bad news, including fears of blowback. Nearly all of Democrats and a majority of independents are opposed to the strikes. Still, there is deep concern across both parties about the long-term consequences of the attack. Eight in 10 Americans -- including 74 percent of Republicans -- worry about the conflict growing, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. And 79 percent of Americans worry that Iran may go so far as to target American civilians. Yet compare that embrace of the polls to the paper’s apologetic coverage of polling after President Barack Obama’s 2011 bombing intervention in Libya, in which the Times blamed the public themselves for not approving of the bombing, that helped oust Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. A March 2011 Obama-era story by reporter Kirk Johnson uncovered novel excuses as to why American’s didn’t approve of Obama’s fearless action (a Gallup poll showed that only 47% approve of the bombing strikes), including information “overload” that led them not to pay proper attention, “compassion fatigue,” even the NCAA basketball tournament. The very phrase “compassion fatigue” assumes the bombing was a worthy cause, an idea the Times didn't consider regarding Trump's action. Unlike Trump in Iran, the Obama-era Times voiced no fear of “the long-term consequences of the attack” in Libya, though such fear was justified after the fatal attack on Americans in Benghazi.

Noem prepares to deport 500,000 immigrants from one long-troubled island

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the termination of Temporary Protective Status for approximately 500,000 foreign nationals as part of the Trump administration's effort to clamp down on the immigration crisis.Under former President Joe Biden, the federal government vastly expanded so-called lawful pathways to entry, enabling millions of immigrants to come to the United States. One of those pathways included the expansion of Temporary Protected Status, which was created to shield foreign nationals from deportations based on temporarily unstable conditions in their home countries.'This decision restores integrity in our immigration system and ensures that Temporary Protective Status is actually temporary.'President Donald Trump vowed to roll back the former administration's overuse of the program, but faced legal challenges for attempting to end these deportation shields. The Supreme Court, however, delivered a monumental win in May, allowing the DHS to revoke the TPS program.RELATED: Biden extends temporary protection status for 800,000 migrants from Venezuela and El Salvador ahead of Trump crackdown Photo by JIM WATSON/AFP via Getty ImagesOn Friday, Noem announced the termination of TPS for Haiti, which is now slated to end for approximately 500,000 Haitian nationals currently in the United State on Sept. 2. Haiti was initially designated for TPS in 2010 after a devastating earthquake hit the island, and the federal government issued numerous redesignations extending it throughout the Biden administration.Under the leadership of former Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, DHS argued that it extended protected status due to Haiti's "simultaneous economic, security, political, and health crises" -- ongoing and intractable problems."Haitian gangs are the primary source of violence and instability in Haiti and pose an increasing threat as they continue to escalate and expand their influence and geographic presence over large portions of metropolitan Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, as well as to several of Haiti's ten departments (regional administrative divisions)," the DHS stated.Noem's DHS contended that "Haiti no longer continues to meet the conditions for designation for TPS.""For several years, there has been a significant increase in the number of Haitians arriving in the United States irregularly, particularly via land," the DHS statement reads. "This pattern of large-scale irregular migration as a result of 'pull factors' has continued for years."RELATED: Trump admin revokes protected status extension for Venezuelan nationals Photo by Andrew Harnik/Getty ImagesThe DHS acknowledged that gang activity in Haiti remains an ongoing issue. However, it argued that Haiti's "lack of government control" has had "direct consequences for U.S. public safety.""Haitian gang members have already been identified among those who have entered the United States and, in some cases, have been apprehended by law enforcement for committing serious and violent crimes," the statement reads."This decision restores integrity in our immigration system and ensures that Temporary Protective Status is actually temporary," a representative for DHS said in a press release."The environmental situation in Haiti has improved enough that it is safe for Haitian citizens to return home," the representative continued. "We encourage these individuals to take advantage of the department's resources in returning to Haiti, which can be arranged through the [Customs and Border Protection] Home app. Haitian nationals may pursue lawful status through other immigration benefit requests, if eligible."Like Blaze News?
