The Great Mamdani Freakout

Politics The Great Mamdani Freakout Much can happen before November 4. Credit: Michael Santiago/Getty Images I was born and raised in Maryland, which is a pleasant way to be, but I’ll happily admit that New York is the center of gravity for my way of thinking. My father’s family was from the outer boroughs, and the city—New York, that is, unless you say it with capital letters, The City, which only ever means Manhattan—has been the distant background for me since my childhood in the DC suburbs. I lived in the city while I was in grad school and still try to make it back when I can. It’s a fine place. So it always depresses me to see the city going down the tubes—something it admittedly does from time to time, without lasting ill effect, but still no fun in the interim. The last time the city went down the tubes was the mayoralty of the weird, hateful Clinton crony Bill de Blasio (whom, I hasten to note, was not actually Italian, but adopted from a family of German extraction). De Blasio was an ideal study in how to be a bad mayor.  A New York mayor has to do only four things well to be considered a winner: don’t mess with the public schools; keep the subway basically safe and in basically good repair; support the police as they crack down on sickos and crooks, even when that entails a little light brutality; and keep the city solvent. De Blasio, who was the most hated mayor of my own lifetime, did the opposite of all those things. He introduced race-based admissions to the city’s magnet schools; the subway got so bad the state took it over from the city; the police were discouraged from doing anything about street-level disorder; and he strained the city’s fisc with novel, budget-busting welfare programs like universal pre-K. In addition to all this, de Blasio was a titanically off-putting weirdo who had come to power basically thanks to his longtime connection to the Clinton machine. No wonder New Yorkers hated the bum. De Blasio was followed by the current Hizzoner, Eric Adams, who is running for reelection as an independent. Adams is also extremely weird. He swore an oath to get an ear-piercing if he won the mayoralty, which he fulfilled on camera; he is a vegetarian; he is a single gentleman who is no stranger to the club; he has a distinctive rhetorical style that is—well, you have to see it to understand it. On the other hand, he reversed de Blasio’s school wokeness, has backed the cops (he’s a former police commissioner), and generally has gone about the business of being a C+ mayor. The fact that he was sort-of, kind-of accepting bribes from the Turkish government in a federally prosecutable way cannot diminish Hizzoner’s success qua mayor.  So anyway, New York’s cretinous, washed-up former governor, Andrew Cuomo, tried to take advantage of Hizzoner’s late difficulties to make a comeback as the Democratic nominee for the mayoralty (who invariably wins against the perennial Republican candidate, Curtis Sliwa, a kindhearted eccentric who runs a neighborhood watch group that wears red berets). The problem is that everyone—including normal, cynical New Yorkers who work for moving companies or accounting firms or the MTA—hates Cuomo, so he lost. He lost to the embarrassingly dated, 2018-style “scumbag left” tribute act Zohran Mamdani, a Ugandan-born Muslim of Indian extraction who supports rent control, LGBT rights, state-owned and -operated grocery stores, and all that jazz. Indeed, Mamdani seems in large part to define himself by opposing the Four-Point Way for mayors laid out above. So much more the humiliation for Cuomo. What next for Gotham? Well, Cuomo can run again as an independent against Mamdani alongside Adams, although reporting has it that he is unwilling to repeat the ordeal; the polling suggests that Cuomo would functionally tie with Mamdani, Adams in the third position. If Cuomo does not run, polling suggests that Mamdani will clobber Adams—I am actually skeptical of that, but the numbers are the numbers. If Adams withdraws and Cuomo runs in the general, polling suggests he’d beat Mamdani pretty thoroughly. Of course, poor, noble Sliwa’s quixotic Republican campaign hasn’t a chance. So the fight is far from over in the city that never sleeps. Cuomo is one of the most hateful figures in American politics—a pure cynic who faked Covid casualty numbers to cover up the fact that, while he was preening at his daily televised press conferences, New York’s nursing homes were being decimated. On the other hand, he would basically uphold New York’s Four-Point Way.  Mamdani has some of the worst political ideas ever tried, but he speaks well and hasn’t been accused of molesting any of his secretaries or assistants yet. Adams has nothing wrong with him besides being a crook. Much could happen before November 4; it seems to be anyone’s race. And, as in so much of American public life in 2025, there seems to be a singular question: Do you prefer the devil you know, or are you going to risk a change? My own money is on New Yorkers choosing one of the devils they know. The post The Great Mamdani Freakout appeared first on The American Conservative.

Jimi Hendrix

James Marshall Hendrix was born in Seattle, dropped out of high school, joined the Army (rather than go to prison for riding in a stolen car) and was discharged about a year later. Stories circulated for years on why (and how) Hendrix got his Army hitch shortened. He likely was a disinterested, sub-par soldier that was of little use to the Army.Already an accomplished guitarist, Hendrix re-invented how to play the instrument. He began working in various touring bands, including the Isley Brothers, Curtis Knight and Little Richard, where he was allegedly fired for diverting too much attention from the star. While playing in New York under the name Jimmy James he was “discovered” by The Animals’ bassist Chas Chandler. Chandler was about to leave The Animals and go into artist management (where the money was).Call it beginner’s luck, Chandler uncovered a powerful force. He shipped Jimi to England and held auditions for band members. Noel Redding (bass) and Mitch Mitchell (drums) were hired and The Jimi Hendrix Experience was born. Their debut LP, “Are You Experienced?,” released in ’67, had the raw opening track “Purple Haze.” “Fire,” “Manic Depression” and “Foxey Lady” were other highlights. The songs featured psychedelic lyrics (“‘cuse me while I kiss the sky”) and Jimi’s intoxicating yet precise guitar. Purple Haze Fire “Axis Bold As Love,” the second LP followed, with “Bold As Love,” “You Got Me Floatin’,” and “Spanish Castle Magic.” The original Spanish Castle was a Seattle area teen club. The pinnacle for The Experience was the third, double album, “Electric Ladyland.” “Crosstown Traffic,” “Burning The Midnight Lamp” and “House Burnin’ Down” contained dazzling guitar expositions along with Jimi’s most confident and expressive vocals. But the set reached its pinnacle with the epic “Voodoo Chile (Slight Return), an extended jam that amply displayed Hendrix’s virtuosity and the brilliant cover of Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower, a non-descript song that Hendrix turned it into a classic blending acoustic and electric guitars and providing just the right amount of vocal swagger. Crosstown Traffic All Along The Watchtower It was Hendrix’s only U.S. Top 40 hit, peaking at #20. The album featured contributions from Steve Winwood and Chris Wood from Traffic and Jefferson Airplane’s bassist Jack Casady. Casady’s participation caused Redding to get bent out of shape. He soon left to start his own group, which went nowhere. Mitchell stayed a bit longer but Hendrix eventually lined up Billy Cox (bass) and Buddy Miles (drums) for the less than stellar, Band Of Gypsys. Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) A New Year’s Eve show (’69) recorded at the Fillmore East and some rehearsals for that show is all that remains. Jimi’s playing was looser with a more Soul oriented approach as he attempted to expand his horizons. While there were some good tracks, the group’s chemistry failed to gel. As the highest paid performer at Woodstock ($125,000), he closed the show after playing an epic version of “The Star Spangled Banner.” Hendrix was working on his solo “Cry Of Love” when he died from a barbiturate OD. Hendrix is often lumped with fellow ’60s icons Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison. All three checked out in the early ’70s from drug related causes, though only Joplin’s death was officially listed as an overdose. The Star Spangled Banner .All were 27 when they died and became what’s known the “27 Club” which also included Brian Jones (Rolling Stones) and later Kurt Cobain (Nirvana). While both Joplin and Morrison appeared at the end of their tether when they escaped the mortal world. Jimi’s career had any real future. His life reads like a half-finished novel. If only there was more… Actually, there was – tons. But it wasn’t what everyone was hoping for.Following Jimi’s death there was the meandering documentary film “Rainbow Bridge” with an accompanying soundtrack that included “Dolly Dagger.” That should have been the end of it. But it wasn’t. Concert footage, demos, outtakes, alternate takes, bootlegs, pre-fame recordings as a backing musician (notably with King Curtis) and even Hendrix vocal and guitar tracks with new backing musicians, rolled out in a constant stream. But the keepers of the Hendrix legacy, especially producer Alan Douglas, saw there was a money to be made from these scraps. Cashing in seemed to be the mode of operation. After a long legal battle, the Hendrix family was able to gain control of the recordings.Hendrix ‘returned’ in ’10 with “Valleys Of Neptune,” a 12-track collection of previously unreleased or rarely heard tunes, including some of his last recording sessions – but the album spanned sessions from ‘68 – ’70. Aside from the title track, the album contained studio covers of Elmore James’ “Bleeding Heart” and Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love.” Live versions of both tracks had been available for years. ### The post Jimi Hendrix appeared first on RockinTown.

WATCH: Pro-Trump Super PAC Releases $1 Million Ad Targeting Rep. Thomas Massie

President Trump is getting a head start campaigning against Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) during the midterm elections after a pro-Trump super PAC released a $1 million ad against the Kentucky Republican. The ad follows a lengthy Truth Social post from Trump saying “we will have a wonderful American Patriot running against him (Massie) in the Republican Primary, and I’ll be out in Kentucky campaigning really hard.” Trump’s team then launched Kentucky MAGA to spearhead the effort to primary Massie. Trump Team Forms Super PAC To Primary Thomas Massie, Report Claims Chris LaCivita, one of Trump’s senior political advisers, reportedly said the PAC would spend “whatever it takes” to defeat Massie. According to Axios, the anti-Massie ad will begin airing on Friday. ?Report: President Trump PAC has launched $1 Million TV ad buy against Thomas Massie Via: Axios pic.twitter.com/FURRBccRUp — The Calvin Coolidge Project (@TheCalvinCooli1) June 26, 2025 Per Axios: The ads will be concentrated on Fox News and broadcast TV stations in the Cincinnati and Louisville markets. It will also be airing digitally, aimed at targeted Republican voters. The spot concludes by saying that Massie, an anti-interventionist who was critical of Trump's decision to strike Iran, "sided" with with the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The spot flashes an image of Massie alongside Khamenei and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), a pair of prominent liberals who also criticized Trump for attacking Iran. The ad also targets Massie for voting against Trump-backed legislation aimed at cutting taxes and funding border security. "Let's fire Thomas Massie," the ad says. "Will lobbyists for a FOREIGN country be able to buy a seat in Congress? That’s the question in my re-election," Massie's campaign account stated. Massie has been a leading voice against U.S. involvement in Israel’s war with Iran. He opposed the recent U.S. strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, calling Trump’s actions unconstitutional, but stated on Monday that he does not support Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s effort to impeach Trump over the attack.
