Boy Throws Jimmy Carter-Themed Birthday Party – Gets Surprise from His Favorite President’s Daughter

A boy in New Jersey who has established a strange fandom over the former president Jimmy Carter, has just enjoyed his 5th Birthday. And while little Ryan is fond of ninjas, dinosaurs, and Spiderman, his mother Laura Ramos surprised him with a Jimmy Carter-themed bash complete with ‘Carter for President’ memorabilia, a life-size cardboard cutout, […] The post Boy Throws Jimmy Carter-Themed Birthday Party – Gets Surprise from His Favorite President’s Daughter appeared first on Good News Network.

Misunderstood Monsters: The Truth About Sharks

Column SFF Bestiary Misunderstood Monsters: The Truth About Sharks Are sharks really just mindless eating machines? By Judith Tarr | Published on October 20, 2025 Photo by David Clode [via Unsplash] Comment 0 Share New Share Photo by David Clode [via Unsplash] The shark in popular culture is pretty much a mythical beast, on a level with the kaiju and the sea serpent. It’s a mindless eating machine, a total and unmitigated monster. All it wants is to turn you into swimmer tartare. As with so much of what lives in the sea, we don’t know all that much about sharks. Research is ongoing and our knowledge increases steadily, but there’s still quite a lot of mystery. And quite a lot of shark species, too—over four hundred and counting. Sharks range in size from the dwarf lantern shark at six inches (15cm) to the sixty-foot (18m) whale shark. The great white is not the biggest by far, and the tales of 25- and 30-footers (7-9m) are probably exaggerated. A large male great white runs around 11 to 13 feet (3.3-4m). The largest known male is named Contender, and was measured at 14 feet (4m) and 1653 pounds (750kg). He just showed up in the news, pinging his tag off the northeastern coast of North America. Females are larger than males, at around 15 to 16 feet (4.5-5m). The longest reliably measured shark was around 20 feet (6m). Still plenty big, and plenty deadly; it’s the largest predatory fish on the planet. But Megalodon it’s not. Not all shark species are distinctly sexually dimorphic, but many are. Females grow more slowly, and they eat differently—going for larger prey, the better to conceive and nourish their young. Bruce in Jaws is probably a she, and she’s hunting along the Cape to build herself up for making babies. Some sharks lay eggs, some are ovoviviparous which means the eggs hatch inside the mom (and the babies feed on unhatched eggs and each other until they’re ready to emerge), and some, including great whites, have actual live births. No one had ever seen a newborn great white until very recently (and it’s a bit speculative, based on the evidence, because we have yet to see a great white giving birth). In further beautiful weirdness, a few species of sharks have reproduced parthenogenically, without the presence of a male. Shark life spans are as varied (as far as we know) as their sizes and shapes. But since we’re into great whites, the range there is pretty similar to its cetacean analogue, the sperm whale. A great white can live about 70 years, and reaches sexual maturity somewhere around age 20. Contender, when tagged, was about 30 years old. The grand champion in the shark longevity sweepstakes, as far as we know, is the Greenland shark, which has been recorded upwards of 250 years old. That’s far from the oldest living thing (some plants, jellyfish, and mollusks have lived much longer, and the hydra might be immortal), but it’s the oldest large vertebrate we know of, even older than the bowhead whale, some of whom have been found with harpoons dating back over 200 years to the golden age of whaling. Compared to this, humans are mayflies. So while Jaws is not accurate when it goes on about sharks living for thousands of years, it’s not as far off as we might think. So what about the big question, the reason for all those gory movies—the shark attack? Are sharks really mindless aggressors? Is hunger their main motivation, with rage a close second? Are they, in a phrase, out to get us? The answer is, pretty much, no. Sharks are apex predators. Some, like whale sharks, are like baleen whales: their prey is tiny and they eat a lot of it. Many, including the great white, eat bigger animals. To a fifteen-foot shark, a fish the size of a human is a good dinner. The problem for us comes when she reads human activity in the water as fish activity. Especially if there’s blood, because sharks have an acute sense of smell and can detect blood from a long ways away. She’s not deliberately targeting the human, any more than she’s targeting a fish or a seal. She doesn’t just attack for the sake of attacking. She’s hunting to eat. What about boats? Again, sharks don’t randomly attack boats. The best explanation for when one does bite a hull is curiosity. “Big fish? Edible? CHOMP!” Unlike the orcas that have been sinking yachts, sharks don’t gang up on boats unless there’s literally blood in the water. (The orcas may be playing, or it may be a teenaged fad. It’s probably not malevolent. They have not, so far, harmed any humans. Just their boats.) Also unlike the orcas however, they will bite a human who reads to them as prey. These attacks in fact are quite rare, and fatalities even more so. You’re more likely to be struck by lightning than attacked by a shark. When attacks happen, they’re blown up out of all proportion. Jaws actually addresses this in the first half of the movie, when the mayor argues that if they close the beaches and publicize the first attack, people will panic and kill the tourist industry for the summer. The film is spot on about the reaction to a shark attack. Long before Jaws and the book it’s based on, humans were terrified of sharks. There was a whole mythos around them, a persistent narrative: Sharks Kill. Sharks Eat. Sharks Bad. A similar, visceral terror used to be aroused by wolves, until the narrative shifted and more humans came to see wolves in a positive light. With wolves, there’s the fluffy-fur aspect, along with pack loyalty and family bonds. Wolves are attractive, even with their terrible sharp teeth and their haunting howls. Plus we’ve domesticated a significant portion of the species and transformed them into house pets and loyal companions. Wolves are accessible. We can relate to wolves. That hasn’t happened with sharks. There is nothing cuddly about a fish with sandpaper skin and far too many big, sharp, pointy teeth. To our eyes (and we are very visual animals), sharks are scary ugly. They look terrifying. There’s nothing there to hang our positive feels on. So, are sharks really just mindless killing machines? Can sharks think? Do sharks think? We don’t know. What we do know is that shark brains are proportionally as large as mammal brains, and have the same overall structure. That implies that they’re capable of a level of cognition above and beyond hunt-kill-eat. Possibly well beyond. Whether the implication is true, again, we don’t know. Cetaceans are easier. They’re mammals, they raise and educate their young, and they communicate vocally, which we can relate to and try to understand. Sharks communicate through body language, movement, and chemical signals. Some vocalize, but as far as we can tell at this point, not with the sophistication of dolphin or sperm whale sounds. Sharks are alien. They are not social animals in the way that cetaceans are. Jaws’ idea of the “rogue shark” is off base in that sharks in general, and great whites in particular, are mostly solitary. In that sense every great white is a rogue. At the same time, when they meet or mate, they appear to interact, and communicate, in complex ways. We don’t know if, or how, young sharks learn to shark. They aren’t taught by their parents or relatives. Probably they learn by doing, though there is evidence that some species at least also learn by observing others. We’ve only just begun to study the nature and extent of their intelligence, how and how much they learn, and how or if they solve problems. Again there’s an image problem. Octopuses are also non-nurturers, they’re complete aliens, their biology is bizarre by human standards, but also by human standards, they come down on the cute side of the equation. They’re accessible. We appreciate their aesthetic. We’re motivated to interact with them and study them. Sharks are a harder sell. In the new but growing field of animal cognition, they are getting attention, but it’s very early days. All we can say is that they’re probably smarter than we think. How much smarter, time, and continued study, will tell.[end-mark] The post Misunderstood Monsters: The Truth About Sharks appeared first on Reactor.

Weapons Buy-Back Program and Plan to Disarm Hamas

Hamas will have the opportunity to turn in their weapons, according to Steve Witkoff, U.S. special envoy to the Middle East.   “We’re going to have a weapons buyback program,” Witkoff told “60 Minutes” reporter Lesley Stahl. “This is all linked to amnesty and disavowing violence if Hamas people want to stay there. We are well on top of it.”    Following the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that is based on the Trump administration’s 20-point plan for an end to the war in Gaza, President Donald Trump has said multiple times that Hamas will disarm, whether willingly or by force.   Phase one of the ceasefire is well underway and phase two is expected to include the complete disarmament of Hamas and a permanent end to the war that began following Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 terrorist attack on Israel that left 1,200 dead and another 251 hostage in Gaza. The 20 remaining living hostages who were still being held in Gaza were released a week ago. The remains of 12 deceased hostages have been returned to Israel, but 16 remain in Gaza.   Speaking with the “Boundless Insights” podcast, Jonathan Conricus, former IDF spokesperson, explained that the release of the 20 living hostages removes the “sword” over the head of Israel. Now, if Hamas violates the ceasefire and mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey decide they won’t work to implement the various phases of the peace deal, Israel no longer has to worry about strikes that would kill hostages.   “Up until now, Israel was prevented from using various military tactics when it came to tunnel fighting because of the fear that we may kill or hurt our own hostages that were being held in tunnels by Hamas. That is no longer the case and tunnels, going from strategic assets of Hamas and the main enabler of their fighting capabilities, they will become death traps,” Conricus said.   The ceasefire came under threat over the weekend when Hamas terrorists killed two Israeli soldiers in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. In response, Israel launched multiple strikes on Hamas targets in Gaza. Hamas claims the attack on the Israel Defense Forces was carried out by rebel forces and was not a formal Hamas-directed operation.   Trump confirmed Sunday that the ceasefire is still in place.   During a nearly one-hour interview with “60 Minutes” alongside Witkoff, Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law who helped to broker the peace deal between Israel and Hamas, said while phase one of the agreement was “very hard,” the second phase “could potentially be even harder.”  “Right now … the agreement is that an international stabilization force will build a local Palestinian police force and there will be an agreement reached between them on how to create a secure and viable Gaza,” Kushner said.   Money designated to reconstruct Gaza won’t be “going in” until there are “terror-free zones” in Gaza, Kushner said, “because nobody wants to invest this money into a place where it’s just going to get destroyed again by terrorism.”   Work has begun to determine how to organize the stabilizing force in Gaza, according to Kushner.   The post Weapons Buy-Back Program and Plan to Disarm Hamas  appeared first on The Daily Signal.

MSNBC's Capehart Agrees With Foul Mouth De Niro: Trump Won't Leave Office!

"You talkin'" to the Taxi Driver? Prepare for the potty mouth. At age 82, and with an estimated half-billion in the bank, Robert De Niro clearly feels no need to clean up his act for national television. On Sunday's edition of MSNBC's The Weekend, Trump Hater De Niro, in a discussion of the No Kings protests, unleashed a string of vulgarities that included: Two f-bombs: one bleeped, the other live over the air. Telling people to "strap on their balls." Saying Rubio would walk out of the room with Trump "if he had balls." Claiming that Trump supporters "kiss his a--." De Niro's recurring theme was that at the end of his current term, President Trump will refuse to leave office. Co-host Jonathan Capehart, whom no one would confuse for a Raging Bull, nevertheless demonstrated his solidarity with De Niro, telling him "You and I are on the same wavelength" about that. You might have thought that co-host Jackie Alemany would have been offended by De Niro telling people to "strap on their balls" to fight Trump. Surely she would have condemned a conservative for saying that, as it suggests male superiority/misogyny. But left-wing politics apparently trump politeness, especially on MSNBC. Alemany actually said, "speaking of strapping on balls," and proceeded to indicate that Mamdani is the only NYC mayoral candidate who has the courage to criticize Trump.  De Niro said he didn't know enough about the candidates in that race to formally endorse one, and demonstrated his lack of familiarity by speaking of "Hamdani." Nevertheless, De Niro made clear his preference for the socialist who has repeatedly accused Israel of genocide. And since no unhinged leftist tirade against Trump would be complete without a Nazi reference, De Niro unleashed this ugly slur on Stephen Miller, calling him "the Goebbels of the cabinet. He's a Nazi. Yes, he is, and he's Jewish, and he should be ashamed of himself." Note: De Niro uttered his unfiltered f-bomb in praising Letitia James, claiming she's saying that to Trump. Nothing indicates she actually every uttered those words regarding the president. But there is evidence that she figuratively said f-you to the law by claiming, for purposes of getting better loan terms, that a Virginia house 300 miles away from her NYC office was her "principal residence." Here's the transcript. MSNBC The Weekend 10/19/25 8:02 am EDT ROBERT DE NIRO: The original No Kings protest was 250 years ago. Americans decided they didn't want to live under the rule of King George III. They declared their independence and fought a bloody war for democracy. We've had two-and-a-half centuries of democracy since then, often challenging, sometimes messy, always essential. And we fought in two world wars to preserve it.  Now we have a would-be king who wants to take it away, King Donald I. [F-bomb bleeped] that. We're rising up again this time, non-violently raising our voices to declare no kings.  EUGENE DANIELS: Joining us now, actor and activist and curser, Robert De Niro. Thank you so much for joining us this morning.  You know, when you look at and hear from all the folks that were out on the streets yesterday, young and old, white and black, from across the political spectrum, small towns and big cities, what do you think that tells you about the difference that we have now, and kind of the resistance that's growing and where we started in January?  DE NIRO: It tells me that I'm very happy to see that because that's, we need much more of it going forward, because that's the only thing that people are going to, the politicians are going to recognize that either face the wrath of Trump or the wrath of the people.  And they have to be more afraid of the wrath of the people and realize this is not good. I better strap on my b---s and do something about it.  DANIELS: Do you think they got that message that that's going to resonate with them as the week comes into?  DE NIRO: I, I, I, I, it has to, we can't let up, cannot let up on them because he is not going to leave the White House. He does not want to leave the White House. He will not leave the White House. Anybody thinks he, Oh, he'll do this. He'll do that. It's just deluding themselves.  JACKIE ALEMANY: You know, Speaking of strapping on b---s  [Capehart and Daniels laugh], there seems to be only one candidate in the New York City mayoral race who is willing to do that, who has been critical of President Trump right now. Have you decided who you're voting for yet next month?  DE NIRO: I don't know, but I have thought of, the thing that I like about Hamdani [sic] is that he's young, he's smart, and he means well.  . . .  JONATHAN CAPEHART: You said earlier, Mr. De Niro, about the president, he will not leave the White House. This is where you and I are on the same wavelength, because I've long thought -- DE NIRO: No way. He will not. We see it, we see it, we see it every, we see it all the time. He will not want to leave. He set it up with his, I guess he's the Goebbels of the cabinet, Stephen Miller. He's a Nazi. Yes, he is, and he's Jewish, and he should be ashamed of himself.  ALEMANY: Have you communicated your displeasure with anyone in the Democratic party about the way they've handled Trump?  DE NIRO: No, I like what Newsome has done, because he's trolled him, and he's fought fire with fire, and that's what you have to do, and he called him an invasive species, which is what he is. So he's not, he's a thing that doesn't understand, Trump does not understand anything about humanity. People. He has no empathy.  I don't know where, what he is, but he's an alien. And what's what saddens me the most, upsets me the most, is that people follow him. And they think, and they kiss his ass, and they look up to him. And he's, I mean, I don't understand it.  I don't understand the people in his cabinet, some of, Rubio, or anyone, how they can live with themselves after what they've allowed him to do and not stood up. Even walk out of the room when what they did with Zelensky the first time.  Rubio, looking at his face, they got the camera on him. If he had balls, he would have walked out.  . . .  I like what Letitia James is doing. She's fighting back. She's saying, f--- you [unbleeped]! I'm sorry. This is where we are. She's saying, this is it. I will not be taken down by this person. I am not afraid of him. And God bless her for that.

Google Leans on Disgraced SPLC to Attack Trump Allies

If you performed a simple Google search for the names of mainstream journalists and thought leaders, you would expect to get a link to their profile or a link to their website or news outlet. But Google has served up something far more sinister.  The search giant fed its users dossiers from the disgraced left-wing activist group Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which is attempting to brand supporters of President Donald Trump as “extremists,” “white supremacists” and “bigots.” The group has smeared Libs of TikTok creator Chaya Raichik, podcast host and veteran Navy intelligence officer Jack Posobiec and The Daily Wire host Matt Walsh, to name a few, and it seems Google is more than willing to help push that narrative. Google promoted leftist Wikipedia — which repeatedly cited SPLC — and provided direct links to the SPLC website in search results.  “Google hates conservatives, so it is pushing SPLC filth while it pretends to be an innocent bystander,” said MRC Free Speech America VP Dan Schneider. “There’s no reason SPLC should be one of the first results for Stephen Miller, Jack Posobiec or Chaya Raichick. This is a group that lumps together neo-nazi and Ku Klux Klan groups with freedom-loving Americans, concerned parents, practicing Christians and observant Jews.”    The House Judiciary Committee also reported that when former President Joe Biden’s FBI targeted traditional Catholics, it used SPLC’s write-up on “radical traditional Catholicism,” which it had labeled an extremist ideology.  On Oct. 3, FBI Director Kash Patel announced in an X post that he “terminated” the bureau’s relationship with SPLC. “The Southern Poverty Law Center long ago abandoned civil rights work and turned into a partisan smear machine,” Patel wrote. “Their so-called ‘hate map’ has been used to defame mainstream Americans and even inspired violence. That disgraceful record makes them unfit for any FBI partnership.” Google, with the help of Wikipedia and SPLC, went after Orthodox Jew Chaya Raichik the hardest. Raichik receiving the brunt of Google’s bias as the search giant both directly and indirectly promoted SPLC seven different times in a search for her name. Google elevated her “Extremist Files” profile from SPLC’s website as the top search result, above the Libs of TikTok Wikipedia page, which cited the legal advocacy group’s 12-section complaint about the influencer. In its screed against Raichik, SPLC accused her of leading “an anti-inclusive education campaign that relied on conspiracy theory, anti-LGBTQ+ propaganda and the ‘groomer’ slur.” Adding insult to injury, Google’s AI Overview also cited SPLC and Wikipedia as its top two sources. Wikipedia’s use of the far left group’s content is especially concerning, considering the so-called encyclopedia's own admission that the organization is indeed biased. “As an advocacy group, the SPLC is a biased and opinionated source,” Wikipedia writes in its source guidelines. Nonetheless, the encyclopedia greenlights the radical group as a “reliable source” for its entries so long as it is labeled opinion and given “due weight.” But Wikipedia and SPLC were not the only far-left articles calling Raichik an extremist that emerged in Google’s search results for her name. The search giant also elevated two articles by the radical activist group Human Rights Campaign. One piece reported Raichik’s addition to SPLC’s “Extremist Files.” The other referred back to the same SPLC profile and linked her to bomb threats against gyms that allowed “trans-women” in women’s locker rooms.  In addition to Raichik, five others were pilloried with negativity by Google’s search engine activism. The search giant propped up SPLC’s “Extremist Files” profile on Posobiec, as well as his Wikipedia page that cited the profile. SPLC associated him with election denial and accused him of “spread[ing] lies about widespread voting irregularities that never actually occurred.” The disgraced group notably does not label Democratic Party politicians Stacey Abrams or Hillary Clinton as extremists for having denied the results of the elections they each lost.      SPLC and Wikipedia additionally cropped up in searches for Walsh and the name of the late journalist David Horowitz. Wikipedia editors referred to SPLC’s assertion that Walsh is a "peddler [...] of fear and disinformation about LGBTQ people." Citing SPLC, Wikipedia editors further accused the organization Horowitz founded, the Center for the Study of Popular Culture, of being “one of 17 ‘right-wing foundations and think tanks support[ing] efforts to make bigoted and discredited ideas respectable.’” Google also highlighted the Wikipedia pages for podcaster and former Fox News host Tucker Carlson and Family Research Council President and Marine Corp. veteran Tony Perkins.  Wikipedia editors echoed SPLC’s claim that "Carlson probably has been the No. 1 commentator mainstreaming bedrock principles of white nationalism in [the U.S.]" SPLC also targeted Perkins as an “extremist” for his very mainstream beliefs that immigrants should assimilate into American society, that marriage is between a man and a woman and that parents should be able to choose the best therapy for their children that aligns with their values.  These new findings follow MRC’s previous study, which found that Google had elevated SPLC, Wikipedia and an inflammatory blog at the top of search results in a search for Trump advisor Stephen Miller, who is also Jewish.  Free speech is under attack!
